There is also lots of home decor, cookware, and just about anything else you find in your house. Everything is marked down and close out priced.

My friend was looking for clothes for her oldest son so we cruised on in to check it out. I immediately noticed ALOT of Arizona Jeans clothing on the men's side, MMA (who wears this crap), Southpole, Lucky Brand, and some clothing brands I've never heard of. Decent prices with jeans being around $15, shirts for $10, and shorts in the middle at $12. Not bad, but I didn't buy a thing. The real story here was one shopper. This bitch went ballistic on a teenage cashier and the manager. She accused the manager of intentionally blocking her in an isle; then basically threw here selections at the cashier. Then, screamed at her when she wasn't paying attention to her every word. The cashier was assisting another employee on locating a price for an item. "I usually don't complain about anything but"....usually means you do. She finally left and the cashier took a smoke break on the steps just outside. Dammit Rooster, you poo'd your pants. I was wondering why you were hiding between the jeans. Come here for great deals and a side of drama!

Yep, it ain't much of a mall. There are couple of department stores (J.C. Penny, Palais Royal) and…read morea few smaller shops, but overall, the space is being rented to TDCJ for office space. The thing is, locals know that Huntsville is a bit of retail wasteland. Always has been. There have been complaints about a lack of good stores and decent restaurants as long as I can remember. Westhill mall is an ambitious and failed attempt to correct that. As far as it being part of a "country hell". I grew up here and returned after living in some of the greatest cities in the world. I know how good and bad Huntsville is. The lack of a 'real' mall doesn't even register on my radar. I can't imagine true mall culture in this town. Just thinking about a Hot Topic in Huntsville makes me laugh. West Hill mall does make a good place to get in a little light walking in the middle of our 100 degree summers. In fact, a lot of people use it for that instead of driving 15 miles out of town to New Waverly, or, for that matter, going to the public walking tracks in town, or the multiple gyms, the large state park, the public swimming pool, or the state of the art university facilities. Older people, in particular, prefer West Hill mall for their exercise. I am not claiming West Hill Mall is adequate by 'mall' standards, but if you come to Huntsville expecting the same retail amenities as a large city or a wealthy suburb like the Woodlands, you are highly delusional and set up for disappointment. And, I will stand on your LA or SF coffee table in my boots to tell you so (although I do love SF).

Two stars for the ability to park AND get a cart in under an hour. Bastrop HEB really has set the bar low on those requirements. I guess we're back to driving 3 hours round trip for grocery shopping in Georgetown... where they have competition, multiple stores, and I've never been told, "Sorry. We're cleaning the machine. After being open for FOUR hours? Either you need to have two machines in rotation or... do this before/after the deli opens. Shocker to get prepared for the day BEFORE the day starts.

I went to the one in La Grange, as it was pretty much the only true grocery store in the area (yeah, there is that other one attached to a big box store down the road, but it just isn't the same). Normally grocery stores have a certain layout, and while this store held somewhat true to that typical layout, the one thing it did not have was the standard dimensions. In this store the aisles are relatively short, but there are a bunch of them, which means that finding the right aisle for an item can be a bit tougher because of the way things are distributed through the store. You still have your various sections, like your meat department and your produce, though the deli was in a very odd spot at the front of the store with the access to it pointed away from the entrance to the store. I had to walk the whole way around the store before I was able to find the deli! The store is clean and decently lit, so finding what you need isn't a problem. Variety seemed to be there to some extent, though the deli didn't have any fried chicken which seemed odd to me... baked whole chickens, sure, but no deep fried chicken. Anyway, if you are looking for a grocery store in La Grange, I would say HEB is the place to go, and bypass that big box store down the road.
