I gotta give credit where credit is due today. I came here to buy a charging cable for my phone, and the employee in the electronics section was sort-of helpful but not that much. He indicated the type and then recommended that I pick-out a cable from the case of cables that was on display. I didn't have much of a clue so I picked the Onn cable. I wanted to test the charging cable with my phone, but he wouldn't allow me to plug it in at an outlet in the electronics section, instead he suggested that I walk all the way to the front of the store by the Customer Service area. After some searching, I located an outlet on the wall and tried the cable. And the cable didn't work. So I needed to return it within the same customer service area. Toria helped me immensely and advised me about a different outlet by the elevators. It still didn't work. Toria then tested the outlet with her own charger and phone, and then allowed me to test my phone with her own charging cable. It worked of course. The issue was with the Onn charging cable, so I purchased the Belkin cable instead, and it was good because it worked. Toria didn't need to do any of that, and she was truly awesome in helping me.

And in today's episode of "What did I forget to pack this week?", we're headed to the nearest Walmart for a few things. Yep, this one is in Northern Washington DC and it's late on a Sunday night. It was... interesting. The parking deck underneath the store is well lit and relatively roomy. The escalators were working just fine. And the security guards (two!) at the entrance to the store were a nice thing to see. The store itself was decently stocked, at least in the mens wear and the personal care areas. I was able to get what I needed, pay for it at the self-checkout and be on my way in a flash. DC charges 5 cents per bag, so you'll want to bring your reusable bags.

I go here frequently. Better and more options in clothing and groceries but not in home accessories!

Ask the Community - Walmart Supercenter

Is there a garden center at this Walmart? If not, which one has a garden center in and around DC?

They only have a small stand w/ flower bouquets if that's what you are looking for, but even that I wouldn't recommend as flowers there usually are not very fresh. The Trader Joe's on 14th street has better flower selections.

You have to go with the hustle and bustle and hope that you don't forget anything. On top of that, you really have to pay attention to see where departments are in this store. I had several items I knew I needed to get and I didn't want to make anymore stops than I needed to on my way home. Plus, I had a plan to stay in all weekend and this would fulfill that plan as well. I came in and darted to areas that I knew I needed to go to. I was amazed by the fact that everything I needed was stocked and available. I made it a point to not get a cart or basket because I didn't need to buy anything just because I saw. Using only my hands to grab the items helped in this train of thought. You can only carry so many items and this limited me to impulse buying. Then I got to the registers and this is where it kind of turns into the hunger games. You can either take your chances and stand in one of the two long lines at registers that are manned. Or you can stand in line at the self checkouts and hope that the people in front of you know how to use them and use them fast. I chose the latter and almost regretted this as the people in front of me were slower than I expected. I did end up getting through my own checkout quickly and since I had my own bag ready, I was out of that area and on my way back out. Why the freight elevator is at the entrance of this place, I don't know, as it is a big obstacle to go around when entering and exiting. And the exit side is almost always littered with people that you have to sidestep with the best of them.

I came to this Target for the first time, there is a parking lot attached. I shopped then asked…read moresecurity in Target about validation. She stated I only needed my receipt. I proceeded to exit and tried to scan my receipt. When it didn't take, I called on the help button for assistance. Explaining I shopped at the store and was trying to validate my parking. I was informed they don't validate and I had to pay. I would not be using their parking facility if I wasn't shopping at target. I paid but I will not return, that's terrible service!

Walking in here was mostly like any other Marshalls location. You just need to spot the department and head that way. Of course, the section I needed was all the way in the back of the store and I had to dodge a lot of people to get there. There was no straight line in getting to this section in the least. Finding the department and then the section was the simple part. Rummaging through all the prospects of items was the hard part. I was in luck as I found exactly what I was looking for. And well all know how much of a feat that is in one of these types of stores. In fact, I was able to find two of what I needed and just took them both. Then came the checkout line. How is it that people forget what personal space is when it comes to standing in line? The lady behind me was so close to me with her cart that I'm sure if I was walking she would have clipped my ankle. Then there were the registers themselves. Seeing how long the line was you would have thought they would have been going full steam on the registers. But it was like dominos falling slowly, when one customer was done, that employee would close their line and move on to another task. Luckily not all registers closed, but it took a hot minute to get out of this store.

I'm at least the 3rd generation of family shopping addicts. Most importantly, I've carried on as a loyal & unshakeable fan of the TJX Company, owners of TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Homegoods & other jumbled and disorganized stores. That's part of the adventure, mind you. If you are patient and forgiving, where else could you find a perfect pack of unbroken, uncrushed Dutch cookies-- and for a bargain $3.99 (original price $15.99!)-- discovered in a bin in Lady's Lingerie? I know some people strongly dislike these stores, e.g. they kvetch about the mess, the missing and broken pieces, the fingerprints on the picture frame. The torn and crumpled children's overalls mixed in with lady's clearance sweaters. The $125 scuffed handbag with a ripped handle. But bear with me, ladies and guys, while I point out the strong points. Adventure! Something nice for virtually nothing! Top of the line beauty items, like French soap for a song! Designer silk blouses for $15, not the usual $65! Okay, some of the treasures need repairs, and maybe a good cleaning. But that's the point of bragging rights. When a coworker asks, "Where did you get those those boots? Tres chic!" You can say, "oh these things? I love Saint Laurent, but he's so expensive! I was thrilled to spot them in a clearance bin! But I really can't remember where they're from! You know I love those bargain stores, and they all kind of blend together after a while..."

Dollar 1 ain't one of those dollar stores where everything costs a dollar. It's where you can get some cheap disposable plates for kids eating pizza, knockoff toys, a bag of chips and some High Fructose Corn Syrup infused drinks. Nothing major. The store is far enough south of the Georgia-Petworth Metro Station that the street starts looking a little sketchier. Many vacant buildings surround the store, but there are still several businesses within sight. I enter the store hoping for a belt and much to my surprise I spot them immediately. Really cheap belts, made in China, with no size indicated, and several options to choose from. The standard black belt, brown belt, blue belt, yellow belt, USA belt, bald eagle belt, woven belt, any kind of cheap belt you could ask for were all there. After running the belt around my waste to get an approximately correct size I go through the store looking at their selection of items. The store has some party supplies, basic laundry and household needs, and even balloons and a helium tank. There is an awkward ramp under the carpet that sneaks up on you when going to the back of the store. There is nothing special about this place. But at $2/belt and several items for dirt cheap, it isn't bad either. Solid dollar store.
