I came here with a group and at first I was a little hesitant but when I started to chomp away.. I was lost in euphoria. This restaurant has been here since the early 20th century and some of their dishes still serve with the original recipe from the past. My favorite was the squash (unusually) and the Fried Chicken!! The service was prompt/courteous and the food came out relatively quick. The restaurant itself is situated in historical downtown Vicksburg and is within walking distance to the Mississippi River. Although there are other "modern" places to eat at in the near vicinity, give Walnut Hills a try to complete your Southern experience and see what it was like to eat a meal that was served post-Vicksburg Siege of 1863. While there is plenty of Soul Food in Vicksburg to be had, Walnut Hills absolutely takes the cake. The restaurant is set in a beautiful old home in Vicksburg built in the late 1800s. Hard wood floors creak as you are seated at either a round table, where you eat with fellow restaurant goers from a giant spinning dolly in the middle of the table, or to a private table where you order from a blue plate style menu. The wait staff are are kind, but in that Southern kind of "What do you want?" way. The food is always fresh, fast and mouth watering. I have always been in heaven every time I've eaten there. The smothered squash is one of my favorite dishes. I can only guess that it is smothered in pure love because every bite coaxes an exclamation from me. I try to bring anyone from out of town to lunch here because it truly is a one-of-a-kind experience in both atmosphere and cuisine. My only complaint is that they are not open on Saturdays! I'm used to places being open on Saturdays and closed on Sundays and I always try to go there on a Saturday. read more

Let me just say that I have traveled the world and enjoy fine food and wine; what we experienced today was nothing short of shocking. The service was rude and abrupt; the food was like that of my school dinners back in the 80's and the prices was borderline criminal. This old historic house serves up a traditional Sunday brunch as it should be. The service is friendly, the dining is communal, and you are eating in a true Old South kind of home. You get 2 options: round-table family style for $20 or a meat and 3, plus some, for $12.50. There was definitely a hustle and bustle atmosphere after good ol' Sunday worship service. As I was traveling and did not want a food coma, I ordered up a simple plate. I got just the right amount of everything. You get less meat than usual, but with a large plate of biscuits and cornbread, salad, 3 sides, and dessert, it sets you just right. The fried chicken plate comes with 1 big breast, and the brisket comes with 3 thin pieces. The fried chicken was crisp, and the brisket was moist and flavorful. The sweet potato was just a half, but it was moist and sweet, a bit too much for my liking. The coleslaw was fresh, and the broccoli salad was crisp and dang near perfect. The smothered squash had a touch of cheese and was surprisingly creamy. The green beans and mustard greens were not bad. The cornbread was crumbly and flavorful, and the biscuits were really tender. The Mississippi mud cake was very rich and a bit too sweet. The blueberry cobbler was stickier than most, but it was just the right amount of sweetness to tartness. The staff was very courteous - I love southern hospitality! Chicken Gumbo appetizer ($6) was rich in flavor. Ordered their famous fried chicken which comes with 2 sides. They said they were out of Mac and cheese and squash. So, I ordered the green beans and white rice with gravy. Both are very good. I wish Chinese restaurants would make rice taste like this! However, I exited I-20 to try the fried chicken. And it's pretty hot and juicy. I can't say that I would stop by again just for the chicken, but I definitely would for the meal as a whole. My husband and I have been to this restaurant numerous times this past year. First time (about a year ago) I ordered the Shrimp and Grits. It was terrible..shrimp was not good, flavoring was awful. Time past we decided to try again. So I ordered their Fried Chicken which is what they are supposedly known for. It was very good. And their prices are reasonable considering they offer 2 sides with dinner. My Husband had the special Chicken Fried Steak that he really enjoyed. In fact he enjoyed it so much I emailed the owner and advised how good it was, and suggested they add that to their menu. She did reply and said Thank you and would consider it (they never did). Went for lunch and I ordered the Fried Chicken again, it was not good, very greasy. We went couple weeks later again for lunch, figured I would give the Fried Chicken again, awful! as greasy as a fast food chain, would never order again. This place is more convenience than anything for us, which is why we kept coming back. So I saw on facebook they had a special for dinner it was chicken over polenta. I love polenta, so my husband took me. Unfortunately it was grits not polenta. Felt bad for the waitress too, because no one explained to her what it was. So I did. Before I forget to mention the waitstaff are so friendly and accommodating. We took a friend for dinner one night. I ordered the fried oyster salad. Salad was fresh, but the fried oysters were awful, i pushed them to the side and ate the salad. My husband and our friend meals were ok, but I can't remember what they ordered that night. They did order a piece of their white cake with coconut. I tasted a bite, it was terrible, dry and stale. They do make their desserts there, but they slice them up and saran wrap them..any baker would know that dries out the cakes. One visit my husband tried their mardi gras dessert, it was stale, waitress took it off the bill. He did like their banana pudding, when they had it as a special, but wished it was larger in size. We went 2 more times, both times I had the shrimp salad in a tomato with tomato aspic. Both times it was ok. Again, I can't remember what my husband ate, but ordered the peanut butter pie for dessert and it wterrible. So that was our last time going there. So as you can see through the year, we made numerous attempts, and mostly because of convenience (no other restaurants in area open), and we became friendly with some of the waitstaff. You would think out of the many visits to this restaurant, the owner would maybe smile, or say hello, welcome back, anything..never. She was there every time we visited. She should take notes from her friendly staff, but we would never again go back, would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, nor would we bring any guests visiting here. Very inconsistent. The food was ok but nothing spectacular. The poboy does not use the New Orleans crusty bread and so it was soft and a little soggy. There were only 4 shrimp on my shrimp poboy and I was charged a higher price than the menu indicated on EVERYTHING. The filet was $12 more than the menu indicated and was over cooked!!!!!! The Seafood Gumbo was very good, however. It took forever to get seated and though there were lots of available tables in several rooms, we were taken right next to the kitchen door. Super noisy!!! The old house/restaurant is truly a charming place. This place has real potential, if only it were under better management. For one thing, the service was terrible. It took a long time to get our food, and it was extremely difficult flagging down our waiter when we needed something. I went through my whole dinner without the beer that I ordered because my waiter never came around, or at least never got close and slowed-down enough to flag him down. At one point, I had to get up and go to the next table to ask if I can borrow their bottle of hot sauce because our waiter isn't around. I don't think it's fair to put all the blame on the wait staff. I could clearly see that they were running around in a complete frenzy, trying to keep up with the workload. I don't know if they simply had too many tables to keep up with, or if they lacked the training and experience to be as efficient and responsive as they need to be. Regardless, there was no management on the floor, visiting the various dining rooms and ensuring that customers are receiving at least a minimum level of service and attention, and are getting their food in a timely manner. The food itself was okay... but I've had better southern food. But perhaps this is the best it gets in Vicksburg, so that's why it's getting good reviews. read more

I ordered the fried chicken, mustard greens and mashed potatoes. The chicken was good. The mustard greens were terrible. The corn bread/biscuits that came with the meal were ROCK HARD. The location is nice in a cool old house just a couple of blocks from the old courthouse. Our kids aren't very adventurous so they all got burgers. They said they were pretty good. I convinced my pickiest of eaters to get onion rings that I traded him for my glass of sweet tea and the rings were great. Could have been a little crisper, but just fine. My wife and I got the specials (beef tips and rice, and fried chicken). I would have thought that the specials wouldn't have taken another 5 minutes to come out, but whatever. When it came I thought I got a chicken wing instead of a leg. I have had wing drummets nearly that size. The other piece was a thigh. Flavor was good, but both pieces were way overcooked. Honestly, KFC is better chicken. I got mustard greens and mashed potatoes and gravy for sides. Greens were great, and the taters were pretty good too. There were also a small biscuit and corn muffin for each of us. I use that term loosely, because the biscuit was barely even a bite (the size of a single tub of butter) and sooo dry. It's a biscuit, not that hard to make. Wife said the beef tips were nothing to write home about. Also had purple hull (blackeyed) peas. They were alright. We recently moved to Vicksburg, so everything is new to us. This charming place is in an old home, the menu is Deep South home cooking. Everything we ordered was perfect and full of flavor, although just a tad salty. I couldn't resist the fried shrimp and got mashed potatoes with gravy. The service was old school perfect. We stopped here on our way driving from GA to TX and it was a nice place to eat. The lunch special is a great deal ($10 for an entree two sides and tea). I had fried chicken with collards and creamed corn. They were all good and I would go back if I were in town. Nothing was AMAZING although the fried chicken came close with its extra crispy crust. My mom asked for biscuits instead and the waiter, who was kind of rude and seemed like he didn't want to serve us, told us it was because it was 3 and they change the menu. This is classic southern cooking with a little modern touch. I can imagine this place is packed at normal hours so we went during off hours. A nice quite antique setting in a historic location. Sit on the front porch swing after you eat or while you wait. I had fried chicken with onion rings and it was very good. The fried chicken was just like my mother and grandmother made it which means it isn't like KFC. More meat, less crust. A very light fried chicken. My wife had the fried shrimp with a vegetable mix and salad. The shrimp was very fresh and lightly fried. The vegetables were fresh, the salad wasn't anything special. We were especially looking forward to the macaroni and cheese and the desserts. Unfortunately there was no macaroni on Thursday when we went in. Worst of all the desserts were horrible! I ordered a red velvet to go and a slice of caramel cake, which looked beautiful, but tasted awful. The cake was crumbly and the icing was hard. My sister ordered the red velvet cake and she said it was dry and spongy. We told the waitress and she said it was fresh but there was absolutely no way those were fresh cakes! The setting was beautiful. We drove down the street to the murals then up to the Walnut Hill. From the historic neighborhood to the beautiful wood furnishings it was wonderful. When we arrived they seemed a little overwhelmed. The hostess did not greet us. She walked around in a circle then walked away. Then she stuck her head around a corner and told us to follow her. We were sat. It was packed and our waitress was way over seated. She had our drinks to us right away. Then it was about a 20 min wait to order. The atmosphere is very nice and feels like you're eating in someone's house as a guest. I ordered the fried shrimp with sides to green beans and steamed broccoli and a cup of gumbo. The fried shrimp was very big and was delicious. They were succulent and full of flavor. The side vegetables were also very good and despite being vegetable sides they felt like a full meal! The gumbo was also very delicious and had a rich flavor. For dessert I had a slice of one of the House made cream of coconut pies which was heavenly and was a definite highlight. The coconut and the cream paired well together and was very delicious. It was quite a great meal. Service was okay, our waiter was knowledgeable but a bit eccentric and not too helpful.
