It's 40 acres,…read morewith hiking trails, a creek, a suspension bridge that goes over the creek, and interpretive signs that tell you where to go and what kind of animals you might see along the way. Somewhere among all this is also a campground that's available on the weekends. You need to make arrangements with the park in order to camp here. Unlike a park, where things tend to be more out in the open, this nature preserve seemed somewhat isolated. That's part of the reason why I didn't explore too much -- I was alone and had forgotten my pepper spray. I could hear my dad's voice in my head as I started to go deeper into the woods by myself. He always ends his phone calls with "Watch your back" (thanks, dad, I love you, too), and I wasn't doing a good job of watching my back. Not that there's anything nefarious about this nature preserve! Not at all! But I just wanted to mention that it can feel a little isolated, at least the parts that I saw. While I was there, I also saw a woman in the creek -- it looked like she was creek stomping? And I saw a woman walking her leashed dog. At the parking lot, there is one picnic bench that overlooks the creek, and a couple of port-a-potties. If you take the trail from the parking lot that goes to the right (don't ask me what the cardinal direction is, because hahahaha, yeah right), you'll find the Thornwood Nature Center. It was closed when I visited because it's only open on the weekends from April through October. I'll have to come back to check it out!

From the second we pulled in, we were treated like we were doing something wrong. We were immediately yelled at about where we parked and where we were standing even though we were on the campsite we had paid for. At one point we were even told we couldn't walk on the grass. Before we even arrived, we carefully read every rule on the campground's website and in the pamphlet they provided. Despite that, management continually made up new "rules" that weren't listed anywhere. It seemed like every few hours there was another restriction that had never been communicated. What made it even worse was the obvious double standard. We observed people smoking marijuana, and another campsite near us was playing loud music well after 11:00 p.m. without anyone saying a word. Yet when our group did anything remotely similar, we were immediately confronted and yelled at. It felt like the rules only applied to us. Management spent more time driving around looking for people to confront than letting guests enjoy their vacation. They walked around at night with a huge flashlight shining into people's vehicles, which felt invasive and unnecessary. Instead of creating a welcoming atmosphere, they created one where everyone was afraid they would be the next person to get yelled at. Before booking, we even called to make sure our large group would be accommodated. We were assured it would be completely fine. Once we arrived, however, it was clear we were no longer welcome. Management complained about our group throughout our stay, despite having approved it beforehand. This wasn't a camping trip, it felt like paying to be constantly monitored and criticized. It was stressful from beginning to end and easily the worst vacation I've ever been on. We will never return, and I would strongly encourage anyone looking for a relaxing camping trip to choose a different campground.

Those same sites are pretty small and you feel like you're right on top of your neighbor. This place is much more accommodating for seasonals. The playground and jump pad are pretty far from most of the nightly sites so the kiddos need their bikes or you need a golf cart. The fishing lake desperately needs stocked. The inflatables at the beach are fun for the kids and we enjoyed the outdoor music, but not sure we'll come back.

Green Acres is the place for me!…read more If you're looking for a place close to Deercreek (I guess they're calling it Verizon Wireless Center these days) where you can do what you want and nobody will bother you, this is it. I'm not sure they're open when there aren't shows, but their website says they are now hosting private camp outs as well, so that's interesting. I've been coming here sine 1995, and have never had a problem. In recent years they've even offered late night live bands and vendors for some of the bigger jamband shows. The grass is pokey to be sure, so bring some extra padding for the floor of the tent. If you want shade, go early and grab one of the few spots that might shield you from the morning sun. The pictures on the website make it look like a nice shady grove with nice plush grass and that is so not the case. And I've never seen these showers they boast, I think they might be referring to some hoses behind the main house in front. It's in the middle of some cornfields and not so easy to find late at night so print out a good map. Remember that leaving the amphitheater the traffic people might direct you in some crazy direction so you will need to be able to find your way back. It's not a place to go if you expect peace and quiet. The bathrooms are port-a-potties, but they are usually maintained. (I can't speak for the drunk guy that used it before you.)

It's a nice rural location that is quaint, quiet and extremely peaceful. The campground side is so beautiful with the fall colors right now - the reds, orange and yellow! The owners work very hard to keep a nice clean park. Trash cans available at every site as well as picnic tables and fire rings/pits. If we are ever back in this area, we will definitely stop and stay be it a night or a month!

Just a block northwest of the intersection of US 40 & SR 9 is the local tourism /visitor center for…read moreHancock County. It's a pretty low profile place that would probably attract more visitors if it was located on either one of those busy streets, but as is, manages to provide the basics. There is free street parking out front of the center. Inside is a lobby with brochures along the wall to your right as you enter. There is also a carousel with brochures promoting Hancock County and the State. However, there was a gentleman working the front desk who did not acknowledge me or offer to help because he was discussing personal matters with a doctor via his phone. They also have a covered box out front that allows visitors to get some of the brochures during the hours that the center is closed. It only has a few of the brochures and several were single copies, so it's hit or miss you will find what you want from there. This place lacks any real sense of promotion and apparently, lacks any effort on the part of those who are supposed to help visitors. Thankfully, the brochures were easy to use and I was done in about five minutes total. They can learn a lot from the visitor centers in Anderson, Bloomington or Seymour for how to do it better. The Lofts on Main are a new hot spot in Cambridge City, IN - located right along US Route 40 (The…read moreNational Road) and in the midst of an antique alley. With 2 lofts available, you can choose the west loft for a solo or couples getaway (sleeps 2) or the east loft for a group (sleeps up to 4). The lofts are newly remodeled in a historic downtown building. Each loft features a cozy & comfortable king-sized bed, kitchen, dining area, spacious living room, a washer/dryer, and full-size bathroom. You can rent by the night or long term. The living room was one of my favorite spots, with super cozy couches, pillows, a blanket, armchair, games, books to read, and a nice sized smart TV. The stocked kitchen is equipped with everything you need to cook a meal or just have something simple. A Keurig and K-cups are provided. The candy dish in the kitchen was a nice, sweet touch. Cleaning supplies & disinfectants were made available in the loft as well. You enter the suites through the front of the building and stairs are used to access them. A backdoor with stairs that lead to the parking lot in the back of the building is available as well if need. A laundry closet features and washer and dryer, laundry basket, and other laundry accessories. The front windows look out unto Route 40, adding lots of natural lights and a quiet view. My stay was quiet and comfortable. It was a perfect little getaway. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Suggestions for cinnamon rolls at King's Cafe (walking distance) and visiting the surrounding shops were appreciated (and delicious).

I thoroughly enjoyed my recent stay at The Lofts on Main in historic Cambridge City, Indiana. The…read moremost important thing for me in lodging is cleanliness, and the Lofts felt brand new! The rooms were airy and comfortable and tastefully decorated. In fact, when we first arrived it was fun just looking at the vintage artifacts sprinkled throughout. The kitchen area was sparkling clean and had everything I needed to prepare some dishes for our holiday meal. The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom had plenty of towels! For anyone driving east-west through central Indiana, I'd highly recommend taking U.S. 40 (the Old National Road), exploring historic Cambridge City (lots of great antique stores!), and staying at The Lofts on Main. I'm already looking for an excuse to go back in the new year.
