150-year-old coffee shop that mayyyy be haunted?? SOLD. I stopped by on a perfect sunny day, searching for a coffee spot with plenty of outdoor seating that was pup-friendly. There's a private lot shared with the bank next door NOTE: read the signs to avoid being potentially towed. I came in for coffee, but the bartender tempted me with, "maybe we turn your espresso into a martini??" Tempting... I ended up with an orange juice and champagne instead. I said what I said. I also tried a breakfast taco, but honestly, nothing worth mentioning. Next time, I'll have to come back and actually give the coffee a proper shot. read more

Surprising and abrupt rebrand as "Walter's Tavern," but more power to them for being unafraid to pivot, often and violently at times. This adjustment puts the bar front and center, with a simplified menu more geared towards snacks to pair with beer and cocktails. Fewer vegan/vegetarian options which is a big bummer, though. That said, they're doing a great job with community engagement, hosting frequent events such as open mic nights. It's still a great place to hang out, with spaces outside and in, depending on the mood and weather of the moment. Happy hour is a downright steal with half price cocktails and $4 house wine, among other crazy bargains. Definitely a hot spot to hit up, without the buzz or crowds, for a chill day after work with friends. read more

I've been to Freddo ATX twice now, and both visits have been solid. The drinks are consistently good, and the space is very charming. Plenty of seating, relaxed atmosphere, and a great spot to work, study, or just hang out. Although, parking is pretty limited. They also host different live performances throughout the week, which adds some nice variety. The reason why this is a 4 star review is because of the inconsistent service. The bartenders were friendly both times, but the staff member bussing tables and running food didn't seem interested in interacting at all. No response when thanked and very minimal communication. Overall, still a reliable stop for coffee in the morning or a drink at night, but the service experience depends on who you get. read more

Freddo is now officially Walter's Tavern named after the house ghost who once resided in this great Victorian home. Walter's is a wonderfully crafted sports bar meets coffee shop. The second floor utilizes rooms that once would have been bedrooms as nooks for dining, reading, sipping coffee, tea, and cocktails. Total coffee shop vibe on the second floor. The first floor is an antique/vintage vibe decorated to reflect the Victorian home. There are screens for sports, a pool table, bar, gaming machines, and dining tables. Super comfy and welcoming vibe. Outside the porch and side yard work as an open patio with lots of seating (picnic table style). Parking is weird. They have a small side lot that's shared with Wells Fargo and the side with the most spaces is for the bank only. It was a rainy Saturday when we went in for brunch and lucked out with a spot in the lot. Street parking is available. The bartenders were amazing. I had their take on the French 75 known as Walter's French 75 and I was blown away by the flavor. A+ all the way. My boyfriend had a yummy frose' and migas. The migas were yum. I had a croissant sandwich with egg, bacon, and spring mix. Loved it!!! I'm not a fan of a greasy, brown, fried egg (typical for a brekkie sandwich) and was over the moon to see the egg was cooked French omelette style. Freaking amazing. Start with the good - this is a cool old house with a great outdoor area to enjoy. Atmosphere wise, they've got it going on. We had a group of 8 and stopped in for breakfast late morning on Sunday 7/26. We had to order with the bartender, who showed virtually no interest in us being there. Once we ordered, it took forever for the food to come out. We had 3 separate checks - the first order was delivered and consumed before the second order even arrived. There was no silverware or salt & pepper on the table - we asked for those things and (here's the weird part) salt & pepper was delivered in 2 little plastic cups for the table to share. We each had to dip our fingers in the cup to get enough to sprinkle on our food. That being said, the food was pretty good. We had a variety of the breakfast items represented, and one person had a chicken sandwich. Would love to see this place get their service points together because there is potential for this place to be great. read more

I have always enjoyed coming to Freddo ATX, a great spot and not far away from downtown. Got a hot chocolate this time for the cold weather. It's a fantastic place to hangout, study, or getting some work done if you work from home! Service is great, they offer sample food on the house time to time and live music outside of the shop. I love this spot!! I come here to work remote quite often. There is a ton of seating inside and outside has a lot of different options. The old house vibe is so cute! The owner is always there and super friendly. They do have live music and entertainment in the evenings and offer wine and frozes which are amazing. They have a pretty good food selection. I'm always tempted to get the flatbread because they look so good but it's too big for one person. I like coming here to work in the afternoons specifically because they have food and always plenty of room. read more

The products were not fresh at all, the taste and presentation were awful, and it felt like there was complete disregard for the customers. This spot is super cute, I felt like a little escape from Texas. I was craving matcha and wanted a cozy place to read. It was a bit loud for reading, but I still loved the vibe. I asked for a less sweet drink, but their matcha is pre-sweetened. The cashier offered to swap it for free if I didn't like it, which was really sweet. Luckily, I ended up loving it! It's not the most authentic (matcha fans, I saw the frother), but it tasted great. They've got a full bar, coffee, tea, bites, and plenty of seating indoors, outdoors, and upstairs (though the upstairs was reserved during my visit). Parking isn't the easiest if you have an SUV - the lot is small. But there's street parking and access to the Wells Fargo lot on weekends. Definitely coming back. Freddo ATX is a cafe that's basically a house, making it a unique place to visit and try. I got the hot vanilla latte with oat milk, and although it was enjoyable, there was a slight burnt coffee aftertaste. There's a cozy, eclectic vibe throughout the cafe. The upstairs floor had various local art pieces displayed on the wall and added a cluttered look, but it was also fun to look at all the artworks. There's various rooms upstairs to sit at, and you can easily take a small room with your friends and convert it into a private study or work room for a few hours. The outdoor seating area had plenty of seats as well, and there was a stage for live music (I got to watch some live music while I visited, it was great!). There's a great "support local" energy from Freddo ATX, and I would come again. read more

If you smoked cigarettes and studied at Spider House and Mojo's in the 90s and are now worried about your AIC, you will likely love this place! If you didn't do/aren't doing any of those things, but you're not a bougie a-hole, you're still likely to love it. The food menu is limited but great, the coffee ranges from black to spiked, and they have a good wine menu at a decent price. Love the vibes here! I've been a few times but this was the first time I tried the food. The sandwich "The Freddo" was absolutely massive and so delicious. I love the different seating options. There are so many options inside and outside with lots of shade. We opted for the swinging seats outside under the tree and it was perfect for a day with a light breeze. The people working were so kind and really sweet. They shared all about their events they have coming up and were really happy to have us there. A nice double story house turned into a coffee place by the AM and a bar by night, with ample indoor and outdoor seating. And live music! Today was extremely busy, with never ending ordering queues and yet, everybody got their preferred indoor and outdoor seating. The WiFi is reliable to work on your laptops. The atmosphere is very vibrant and lively. Coffee is so nice. I wouldn't say so for the food though, it can definitely be better cooked and more fresh. I tried the bagel lox with salmon, breakfast croissant sandwich, and gyro wrap - all were fine, not tasty i would say. But I'm definitely coming back when the weather gets warmer for more coffee and to get more tasks done on my laptop. read more

Obsessed with this place. Went for brunch/to work and was pleasantly surprised at just how much room they have. We sat upstairs in the window bay, which was stunning of course. I ordered breakfast tacos and was shocked to find they were huge (perhaps a little too much egg) and homemade. My friend's coffee was delicious and beautiful to boot! Had such a good time here!!! We played scrabble and jammed to the music. Definitely more than just a restaurant. Coffee was great! They had these coupons that was a "buy one breakfast dish, get one free." Amazing portions! The gyro breakfast was so good. I don't know what it is but I literally crave it everyday. It does not look that enticing on the outside because of the unorganized outdoor area - messy string lights and inconsistent house and design. inside though, its has a nice cozy ambiance, def not a typical Austin/Texan coffeeshop experience. We visited on Sunday around noon, it was hot but they have a mist system outside which helps. This makes it possible for people to sit outside and not be toasted lol. They have plenty of indoor seating too, there are some people on their laptops even on the weekend, I'm guessing it might be busy during the week. We got the matcha and cold brew. I like my matcha a lot even though it doesnt look like they use ceramonial grade matcha. Bf likes the coldrew and his club sandwiches which is a huge portion. Possibly my new favorite spot in Austin. The building is super old with a lot of history with small coffee shop vibes but spacious with plenty of seating (multiple floors + tons of outdoor seating) and filled with lots of comfy furniture with view of the street perfect for people-watching if you are an artist and need a comfy place to sketch and have a quick drink/bite. It was 3-4 on a Monday and parking was /limited but we grabbed the last spot (glad we carpooled). We only ordered drinks but it seems you order everything at register and take to table of your choice. My friend ordered us a round of "frose" (frozen rose) which I never would have ordered for myself but it was delightful! Not too sweet and perfectly frozen like a fancy rose slushy - topped with a cherry - and now I think I'm hooked There's also rotating art for sale on all the walls. Can't WAIT to come back! This is such a good spot. I really really like the owner. One of the best people watching spots on South Congress. I highly suggest coming here before the new H-E-B is built. Once that is up, it's going to be a cluster. But then again it's also a great place to go and sit and wait while someone is shopping. So amazing seating both inside and out. This is a great spot to get some work work done or to sit with friends and shoot the shit. It's inside of the Wells Fargo bank. Take your time and check it out because they kept so much of the original building. Just like everything in Austin parking is a bitch. So try to park on the side street. You can park here after five I believe. It's really worth the parking. The happy hour is so good and on Sunday it's all that happy hour. Lots of food to choose from. Mostly with a Greek focus. I've had the pizzas a few times. Not my favorite, but you know what the atmosphere and the energy of the place completely make up for the lackluster food. The five stars is because the happy hour is great and the people watching is so fun. read more

Super cute spot! I've passed by Freddo's before and always been curious what it's all about. They did not disappoint. They have a great HH. Mon to Fri 3 PM to close. $2.50 house red or white every day. We were there on a Sunday and tried the $2.75 mimosas and red wine. They also have food, which from those that ordered looked like very large portions. Beautiful outdoor area. We sat at the picnic tables with swing chairs, which I absolutely loved. Also they are dog friendly and have bowls for water and treats available for your pups. They had some live music which was nice. We'll be back soon! read more

Gutted to be writing this review but I was very disappointed by changes to the menu the last time I was at Freddo. As shown in other reviews, they make a namesake sandwich which used to come on focaccia bread and was big enough to serve two people. They've update this sandwich to something completely different. The Freddo sandwich now comes premade and wrapped in plastic wrap on a hoagie roll. It's the same price and about half the size. Mine had soggy bread from the toppings sitting wrapped on the sandwich. I used to come here exclusively for this sandwich, unfortunately looks like I won't be back. They got the second star for the outside area, which is great to sit in on a nice day. read more

Finally got a chance to swing by this place and I'm so glad! The bartender behind the coffee bar was so sweet. It had been rainy and wet outside so I opted to sit inside and wait for a friend. I ordered a latte and a Caesar salad. The salad had entirely too much dressing but it was still really good (hard to screw up a salad!). There is a parking lot but it is shared with the bank next door, and because of that, you can only park there after 5pm. I didn't have a problem finding street parking just be mindful of no parking zones. I can't wait to come back here when better weather is here! read more

This place has really nice outdoor seatings, there are some nice swinging chairs to sit on and they look very cute and people seemed to be sitting very comfortably on them. I missed the opportunity to take a picture, but it's been decided that we'll be frequenting Freddo's on "work at a coffee shop" type of day. Why? The space: plentiful, indoor and outdoor! Picnic benches, outdoor patio couches, porch space, indoor space (feels like you're at home sharing community space). So much space. I will admit, though, the wifi is consistently unreliable...so make sure to have access to a personal hotspot just in case. The service: always so friendly! Shout out to Harry for personable intentions - it's clear you care about how you interact with your customers. He was very accommodating to our interests, including medical-related needs. The ambiance: It can get loud sometimes...inside, it's a large co-working space (so bring headphones) and outside, there are people, music, and the SoCo/Oltorf traffic. It's easy to tune it out, for the most part, again with headphones. The food/drink: Happy Hour seems like a fun time with frozen rose and other specials (like local beer options). Oftentimes bridal parties will come through on a party bus (the starting and ending point of some party bus tour is on College Ave), and I seriously think it's hilarious to see the parties and even think that it makes sense to start/end near Freddo's. Although, because they're not locals, I don't think they know that. Like ladies, great specials on "Rose all Day" type drinks. Haha! We got the hummus board and it was better than we expected! This wasn't great. First I ordered an almond croissant and a specialty drink. They got me my pastry, then I moved to the side while they handled another customer. After serving about two other people, I saw the two staff members just kinda standing around. I had to go up and ask about my drink, they apologized and made it for me. It was weird I had to wait at all since the drink was pretty simple. I don't recall what all was in it, but it wasn't good either. A friend who had arrived earlier ordered a cappuccino. They said one staff member told the other that those were easy to make, and all they had to do was push a button. The prices weren't push-button cappuccino prices. And according to my friend, the flavor wasn't there either. There was a lot of plastic sheeting up, so I assume they're doing renovations? Unless you see that there's been some sort of overhaul, I'd skip this spot. read more
