"Word to the wise" ; Its a huge thing to have no regrets about where you placed your parents.

I have been very pleased with the care he has received there from Rosalie and Ken and their staff. Their competence and kindness have exceeded my expectations. However, I have learned that a recent state inspection noted some problems with my husband's care. I believe these are incorrect interpretations that will eventually be clarified and corrected. But I am disappointed that this has happened and I would like to offer my own perspective. One concern noted in the inspection was that they had not given my husband the required amount of tube feedings per day. But in fact they repeatedly offered him the feedings. My husband simply refused many of them (which he has a right to do since he is aware and oriented), despite hours spent by the staff encouraging him to take them. This was not a surprise to me, because I had the same experience in our home before he moved into the care home. Another concern was that my husband had lost an excessive amount of weight after being in the home for a month. But the actual difference between his initial weight (taken on their scale when he entered the home) and his weight a month later (taken on the same scale) was well less than the amount of loss that should have triggered an alarm.

The dining room food is restaurant quality, with daily specials and a decent fixed menu if you don't want the specials. The fixed menu changes every couple months. The exercise classes are both mentally and physically engaging. There is a lovely movie theater room, art room, outdoor seating area and garden. At the entrance there is a grand piano, bar, and bistro. A resident recently taught a Zentangle class in the art room. She started with "The difference between Zentangle and doodling is mindfulness vs. mindlessness" and without missing a beat another woman said "and you think that's going to help us?!" while a third snorked. The location is unusual, literally minutes away from a hospital, doctors, rehab and temporary assisted living, restaurants (Wasabi has outstanding sushi and sashimi), Costco, hotels, grocery, shopping, plus a lake and outdoor amphitheater walking distance. There is a pool and water aerobic classes, PT. There is a physician's assistant who visits and makes rounds every Friday, simply email or call. The place allows dogs and there are quite a few from small to large. While it is independent living, some have personal assistants and they allow hospice for those couples who don't want to split up (eye opening, hadn't considered that prior to seeing this place). I had a long conversation with many of the residents who moved from other facilities and said there was no comparison. One resident moved the same time as my parents from another Atria facility in Durham (he's quiet until he wants to talk, and then you get a wealth of information). He loves the fact that management has the freedom to manage. Initially the lighting in the theater room was bad, and it took six months but they changed it and now the theater is lovely. He said they will entertain any reasonable request. While I personally didn't do the level of research into senior communities that my parents and sister did since I don't live in NC, the consensus and my experience show this is an outstanding residence and community.

Inetta and the team she organized has provided wonderful care for my wife's parents. She started…read morepart time when they needed some assistance and for the past year transitioned to 24/7 in-house care. She provides professional personal care for my chair-bound father in-law, interfaces with the hospice nurses, medicates, cooks, cleans, and is a wonderful companion. Other members of her team cover days that Inetta cannot be there. A Seniors Comfort, and especially Inetta, are a godsend and have our total trust.

The grounds are spotless and the outdoor space for the residents is inviting an accessible. There are always activities and at least a weekly outing. Covid was handled beautifully with masking required and meal delivery to apartments. Unfortunately, things haven't bounced back as much as hoped, impacted by short staffing and staff turnover. During the time of lowest staffing, menus and meal preparation went downhill; however, things are improving significantly. Staffing situations have also caused maintenance and housekeeping to be below par, but the light at this particular tunnel is beginning to be visible. Parking remains abysmal for residents. Improvements have been promised for months but nothing has changed. There are many opportunities for activities, movies, special dining events, vaccinations, and others. I will remain a happy member of the Reserve community.

I had reviewed 3 other facilities and took my time in evaluating each as I was not pushed to make a quick decision. I made a number of inquiries to them as I learned more about Long Term Care and determining what was important for the care of my wife. The sales group was very helpful and getting information that I requested and provided information they anticipated that I might need in planning. After about 4 weeks, I decided that TerraBella North Ridge was the facility that met my budget and care concerns. Lot of paperwork to be completed but that went pretty smooth. I made a number of trips to visit my wife at different times to see how the memory care unit was being run. The care staff were impressive in how they care for the residents. They are outgoing and helpful in the care of the residents. The memory care unit has residents with various needs and they work to meet them. I was not aware that TerraBella has PAs that can take over the role of Primary Care Provider so the residents do not have to go out which would have been a problem for me. There are also long term pharmacies that can provide the needed medications that packaged to TerraBella requirements. I continued to learn other things the care group does such as some hair trimming and trimming finger nails. I checked on the dining offerings and the food served was good. They have food that is prepared in different ways that the resident may need. I have been impressed with TerraBella in providing all the needed care that my wife needs. I would recommend that you setup an appointment to see the facility and talk with with staff there if you are looking for assisted living or memory care.

Going in during COVID was stressful but they were understanding and kept us updated on protocols and procedures.
