Came for dinner and the place was full on a weekend! (Yay for the business). The menu mostly consisted of soup dishes and we were craving soup + rice hence we chose this spot compared to others in the complex. The food came fast. They have fresh kimchi but the Napa and radish were in whole leaves and chunks so there were scissors and tongs to cut them to your own size liking. I don't recall ever having to do this at the many Korean restaurants I've tried throughout the lower mainland so a new experience. Does it add or take away from the experience though? I would say neither... All the soups here came with either regular rice or stone bowl rice with no extra upcharge so of course I got the stone bowl rice to get the crispy rice finishes. I opted for the seafood tofu soup. There was a lot of tofu and not much seafood. Several pieces of clam, one shrimp and one mussel. Overall an alright spot for soup rice. I wasn't feeling adventurous that day so I didn't get the items that would be more unique to the restaurant such as more knuckle/collagen beef forward or dried pollack. My family's favorite spot for Korean soup on the west coast - hard for me to comment on the quality of service or value for the price, seems YMMV, however, if you're Korean or with someone who is, you're probably gonna be fine. Interior space and service is pretty standard for a small KR restaurant. Their bone soups (Seollongtang and Galbitang), Ggamjatang, and everything else we've tried there is as almost any spot I've had, both in Korea and in the States - it's legit stuff, so if authentic is what you're looking for, this is a great spot for it. Although you don't get a lot of banchan, their kimchi, particularly the kkaktugi (radish kimchi) is solid. At $14.50, the Seollongtang (my personal favorite Korean soup in general) is a great deal; if you're unused to this particular soup, you may need to add salt to taste at the table, as is traditional. Very savoury and not too heavy, it was my first time having galbitang that had radish in it which soaked up the flavours and was super tasty. My mom got the Selleong-tang (ox bone soup) - they provide salt and pepper so you can season it yourself but I still found after adding the seasonings that the broth was extremely bland. Will probably order something else next time! The seafood pancake was nearly $30 and in my opinion not really that worth it. It was my first time having imitation crab meat in seafood pancake. It crisps up pretty nicely but I don't think I would order it next time. Service was efficient, although it was a bit hot in there due to it being an old building. Yes you read that right, a mini stone bowl rice! How cool is that!! The food is great here but the service is inconsistent. The first time I came here the service was amazing. However, the second time I came left a really bad taste in my mouth and let me tell you why. The lady who I assumed is the owner seated us down and simply forgot about us. The people that were behind us (list wise), was given their drinks and utensils and even ordered before us. We waited for 10 minutes and yes, I timed it and still nothing. We tried to grab the two ladies eye contact so we can order but they clearly don't look at you. We finally had to say something for someone to come and take our order. We also asked for some tea after since we had nothing to drink nor had utensils. The girl says ok and left and never came back to us with anything! To make things worst, when the owner came to give us our food, she gave us wasn't even the correct order.... By then I was irritated and also told her we have no utensils and drinks. Clearly I was upset and no sorry or anything was said. Now I know how others feel when they enter an Asian establishment...ironic since I'm. Went for the first time and I will for sure be back! Their galbi tang was soooo comforting and flavourful. Really tender meat and comes with a bowl of rice. The oxtail plate was perfection. Again, tender meat and served on top of a bed of glass noodles (i think nah be the same as japchae ones?). Definitely devour this with a bowl of rice too because that sauce is sweet and kept me wanting more! Decent pricing looking to be fed $14+ depending what you are craving. The complex gets busy but it's packed with a lot of good restaurants and bakeries as well so even if you have to wait you can entertain your tummy in the interim. Enjoy! read more

We ordered over the phone and went to pick up the food today (Phase 2 of COVID-19 Opening). There were arrows on the floor indicating the direction you should approach the cash register. They had plexiglass in front of the cash register. We ordered the LA Kalbi Bento ($12.99) and Jeyuk Bento ($10.99) along with the Sullungtang ($10). While I like the regular food that they serve, I thought they put a lot of effort to make the bentos a great deal. While I don't like fresh kimchi because it tastes bland, the rest of the bentos were great. The LA Kalbi and Jeyuk was flavourful. The fact that there are a total of 8 side dishes including japchae, eggs, beans, Korean pancakes, and mashed potatoes make it a wonderful meal. Their regular non-COVID-19 menu isn't as bountiful in terms of side dishes and it just made me really happy being able to get so many side dishes. The couple times I've had bone soups at supposedly authentic places, I wasn't a big fan, so this time I decided to play it safe by getting the bibimbap (I know, not what this place is known for!). (I wouldn't have chosen to eat here in the first place, but my friend is a regular customer here and I didn't have the heart to say no). So the bibimbap...was nothing special. I had to keep adding sauce because otherwise there was literally no flavour. I do love Korean side dishes though, so it was a huge disappointment when all that came was kimchi... I tried a bit of my friend's soup, and I'd say it was better than the one I had at Han Yang in Buena Park, California (the authentic Korean place everyone in SoCal swears by). This is one of my favourite authentic family korean restaurants. This little restaurant can be quite busy during lunch and dinner. One may have to wait during those times. Me and better half come here quite often, and one of the things I like to order is the tasty ddukbaegi-bulgogi (beef kinda sweet in and not spicy) and it comes with a stone-rice where later you can add water to it and have it like a rice soup. My other half orders the bbeodagi gamgatang (spicy pork bones) which also come with stone rice. Also we ordered the Korean cold noodles (Mui Naengmyeon) which is pretty good for those hot days. On the down side service can be improved as this is a family own business, they should hire more servers. Also in regard to side dishes they have only kimchi (spicy cabbage) and spicy turnip. The Koreatown part of Coquitlam has some truly good places tucked away in the numerous strip malls. This would be the latest example. Parking is available in the large strip mall lot. The interior is Korean style, with wooden trim and booths with short walls. Staff were friendly. The food came reasonably quickly. Appetizers - only 2 kinds (pickled turnip and kimchi), but both are very delicious. Special mention, as many other places offer 6 different but all mediocre dishes. We burned through several plates of both. Bulgogi soup - beautiful. Great taste, and as Wendy Y. has mentioned, not too salty. Comes with a bowl of rice. Amazingly the rice isn't bland. It even has peas on top. Goes great with the soup and everything else being eaten. Seafood pancake - nice and crispy. They're made well in that the thing doesn't fall apart when sliced, but there is still plenty of seafood inside. One of the better ones I've had in town. Pricing was very reasonable. I can't believe the food only came to $15 per person after tax. Many other places in town charge more than that for an appetizer. This place has officially stolen the crown from House Of Tofu for me. The menu is very small, and there is not much selection, but that is alright as this place is delicious and authentic. My co-worker was feeling hungry and decided to come to this place to have lunch. We were seated at a small booth where the menu is taped to the wall. The menu consist of just one page, and most of the items are of a soup variety, and there is a bowl of Bee Bim Bop (which I just had) which was prepared just right. The egg was just cooked, and the egg yolk was just waiting to be popped, and mixed with all the vegetables and beef, and adding the sauce on the side, it was a fun mixing experience. The bowl was a nice big stone bowl where the bottom of the rice was nice a crispy. Also soup came along with the meal. The one thing they do not do with their soups, is add salt, and there is natural salt at the table to which you add yourself, this is a nice touch. At the start of the meal they also give you a big dish of spicy turnip and kimchi with a fork and a big set of scissors for you to cut yourself. I notice many restaurants nowadays are starting to go this route. I wish they had the potato appetizer which I really like. I had a chance to also try my co-workers spicy beef soup, and it had the right amount of kick, and taste. I would definately recommend this place to others. The restaurant is right across from a Hannam (big Korean supermarket) and right in the thick of competition. Food is very tasty and authentic. The galbi jjim, braised beef ribs, is quite delicious. It's got about 6 large pieces of very tender meat, potatoes, carrots and potato noodles. This would be a good dish to order if you have a couple of people in your party. Will definitely be back for other items on the menu. read more

Absolutely love the Korean food here here at Wang Ga Ma. This place is always packed whenever I go, but to me it's a sign that this place is popular. There are only two ladies that work here so half the wait is actually for them to clean the tables and get the customers in. The restaurant is relatively small but it seems that people are in and out quick enough. I've always ordered the #10 seafood tofu soup which is amazingly good - for only $10.50! The order also comes with some delicious white rice that gets crispy when it's left in the bowl. And then, to top of off there's some delicious fresh kimchi that you also get - and I've never been denied a second helping if you ask the staff nicely! Overall, yes the line up can be long and the wait is a bit tedious but the food is absolutely delicious! I think it's a good sign when all the local Koreans come here and then all the local Chinese also follow along because of what they've heard. If anyone is ever near Lougheed I would definitely recommend trying this place out! read more

Their menu is extremely limited to some soup dishes and noodles... that's pretty much it. You can take a look at my photo. Had no idea what to order so I asked the server what was popular and she was pretty stingy and responded "everything". Very helpful. She just stood there until I decided to order a beef soup and a bimbimbap. I was going to add a seafood pancake, but it was too expensive ($15 for a small, seafood-less pancake?) The servers roll around a dirty plastic cart to serve your food... a bit weird. The kimchi appetizer that they gave wasn't very good, the cabbage is supposed to be fragrant and flavorful - this kimchi was a ball of salt. The food comes in a stone bowl, comes with a stone bowl of rice which is bigger than the actual entree, terrible. The beef soup... tasted like MSG... it was even bland! There was one piece of meat and a lot of bones. I was in shock. The bimbimbap has one tablespoon of ground meat, and I'm being generous when I say one tablespoon. I was very disappointed mainly because everything simply didn't taste good, it was not homestyle cooking or even restaurant quality... it was just really bad. Would never go back here... This restaurant was our pick for dinner one night during a recent stay at a local neighbourhood Hotel. It was only a short walk away from where we were staying, and via a walkabout earlier, I found it looked rather nice inside, menu looked good, it was quite busy over lunch, so decided to go for it. Based on our dining experience there, yikes, was that ever a big mistake!! The restaurant is rather large inside, with booth seating, and quite attractively decorated in natural, wood tone colours, with large prints and the like on the walls. The restaurant was virtually empty when we arrived (just before 5pm), and upon entering were shown to a table that would accommodate four people. When seated, a menu and two cups of tea were brought to our table. So far so good. We ordered what they called 'assorted beef in hot pot' - it came to our table on a plate, not in any hot pot - along with sides of a small salad (of thinly sliced onion and ?), and small serving of kimchi. The beef offering was a totally un-flavourful mess -- a few slices of beef 'stuff', placed on and about a small mound of 'veggies', and the whole works sitting in what looked and tasted like a pool of water!! The salad was 'ok', the kimchi was 'not', mostly just a few small chunks of cabbage 'ends', with little taste, and in no way representative of what kimchi is, or can/should be. After leaving the food at our table, the server never returned until I was able catch her attention, and request more tea. She filled our cups, said nothing, and left - never to be seen again until I walked up and paid our bill. Then the only thing she had to say was - "What, no tip?" - I told her to check the table. We enjoyed some very good Korean food during this mini-stay in the area. This was an exception, and certainly not a restaurant that will ever see us again. read more

My go-to Korean place whenever I pass by Coquitlam. It's located in a large strip mall (where H-Mart is) with plenty of parking. We always come here as soon as they open because the restaurant fills up in about 20 minutes of opening. Smaller menu with about 20 items (lots of hot soups, rices and meat dishes, no appetizers). My favorite is #12 Bulgogi Beef Hot Pot with glass noodle. All the dishes come with a white rice served in a stone bowl. Upon ordering, they bring you a large plate of kimchi and radish. Packed on a holiday Monday, we just avoided the lineup. In a neighbourhood with tons of Korean restaurants, people were willing to wait for this place so I knew it was good. The menu is small but full of goodness. I ordered the bossam (steamed pork dish that I like but a lot of Korean restaurants don't serve). The last time I had this dish was in Seoul, and this version wasn't quite as good as that one, but close....and a lot closer to home. I also tried the seafood pancake, which was better than most I have had (just the perfect amount of crispiness, not to doughy). The prices were very reasonable, only $10 for a giant portion (they also have a large size for 16, this must humungous). If you're looking for a bowl of spicy ook jae jang (spicy beef broth) this is the place to get it. Lets be honest, Wang Ga Ma has gone downhill since the original wait staff left. However, food is still yums to me! Service: Meh. I miss the old staff who were friendly and conversational. Everyone now just seems like they're there to do a job. Not so much creating a relationship with their patrons. But I do remember one specific time I was really not impressed. A waitress there had a major attitude problem.
