Major issues I've encountered over the course of a year: * Invalidated Sign-ups: I signed up for a Union Arena demo event through the official Bandai app. Despite having a confirmed spot, the store told us upon arrival that it was "first come, first serve." This completely defeats the purpose of official registration and wastes players' time and money. * Lack of Transparency: When asked why they aren't using Bandai, I was told they "can't control who attends" if they use it. Meanwhile, regulars at the store mentioned they received personal phone calls from the shop to sign up before the general public could. * Gatekeeping Promos: During a Lorcana event, staff attempted to withhold promos, stating they were only for "league members" rather than distributing them to event participants as intended This store clearly prioritizes a small circle of "regulars" over following official tournament rules or respecting the time of new players. If you aren't part of their "inner circle," don't bother signing up through official channels they likely won't honor it.

Once you step through the doors, you feel transported to a totally different place like Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter story. You find shelves of comics, books, games...everywhere your imagination can take you. Dragon's Lair has been part of the Austin community since 1986. You feel a rush to flip through comics, try on costumes or transport yourself to a fantasy land. New releases co-exist with long loved series. Graphic novels, tabletop games, miniatures, dice, and collectibles are readily available. The prices at Dragon's Liar appear reasonable. According to the store manager, the tables within the store are reserved for Magic tournaments, Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) campaigns, and board games spread across tables. The energy is welcoming fostering collaboration between new and existing players. The shop cats, Diana and Brigid, wander through aisles like they own the place, which makes Dragon Liar feel homey and welcoming. The store stays open late sometimes, acknowledging that games and stories don't always fit neatly into set hours. Dragon's Lair is huge, busy, sometimes overwhelming in a good way. They have a wide variety of tea, coffee, cocktails, 30+ beers on tap, n/a, sodas, etc. The center of space is a shop with gaming items, plushies, books, etc. Off to the right is a very large dining area with several cove-like Tudor booths. Perfect for large gaming teams and events and rad that you're able to have a meal or snack while playing (no outdoor food or drinks allowed). This is a perfect haven for D&D peeps. The British theme runs throughout the entire space including the menu. My boyfriend and I shared a Bavarian pretzel and brisket pie. The brisket pie was incredible and made feel like I was back in the UK at a local pub having a bite. Absolutely perfect. I'm not a gamer and you don't have to be to appreciate this inclusive, welcoming environment. It's eclectic, charming, & tasty!

We also enjoyed hot cocktails on a cold winter night - hot toddy's and Irish coffee. Absolutely fantastic. After gabbing about the book, we chose to play Ticket to Ride, a classic board game. Trade-in's take about a week which they do give you a heads up on but buy lists are a quick turn around, typically same day. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Only knocked one star because you do need to check your buy list to make sure everything is included. I've had several instances where one card is missing and I needed to make a separate trip to pick up the missing cards. Made this mistake twice before I started double checking my orders before leaving. I usually order 10-15 cards per order so I understand things can get missed - just need to double check before leaving.

I stopped by hoping to check out Pokémon PSA cards, but they weren't on display in-store and I had to look them up on the website instead. It would be nice to see some of those items showcased in person in the future. That said, the staff was very friendly and helpful, making the visit enjoyable overall. Definitely a cool spot for gamers and collectors alike.

The area it is in is a strip mall so there are other things around to take a look at. On one visit, my friend wanted to know the status of an order she had placed, and if the shop could change the name on her order. The guy behind the counter helped change the name no problem. He was super efficient and even checked if there was anything else that needed to be altered in the system on the shop's end. I thought this was really rad. They have the standard comic book store items. It is not huge, but it is well organized and they're willing to order any books they do not have in stock already. Stop in if you're in the area.
