Our tour guide was the same young man who served as our guide a day eariler at the Daniel Boone home and historic site. He is a recent graduate with a degree in history and again gave a wonderful, informative tour. The Deutschheim State Historic Site includes two historic homes that are part of the tour -- the Pommer-Gentner House (1840) and the Strehly House and Winery (1842). Derek started our tour in the garden behind the visitor's center and then moved into the Pommer House which served as their residence and as their workshop where they manufacturered pianos and other musical instruments. After the Pommer House, we walked down the block to the Strehly House and Winery. These were originally two separate buildings that were later connected into a single building. The residental portion of the structure was well-perserved. We had a tour of the winery section and a newpaper/printing area in the basement. Derek was quite knowledgable and very informative. He seemed to be enthused about his job and tried answering any questions we posed. The Deutschheim State Historic Site was about a 75-90 minute drive from Chesterfield, MO but it was well worth the visit.

I recommend going outside in the morning while it's not too hot. A lot of the outside is metal and rebar. This area was very nice because I didn't feel claustrophobic outside. I know we must have missed a lot because each nook and cranny had more to explore. I'm sure there's some places I missed because I couldn't fit and some I just didn't see. I found out after we left that one area allows you to go under the floor. This museum is not a place where you should wear shorts or a dress. I recommend long pants. I tore my jeans on a rivet, and it would have cut me up in other clothing. We had 1 adult with us who was handicapped, and she wasn't able to stick with us at all. There are elevators but it is not disability friendly. Overall 10/10 would return.

Seeing those in person was fascinating, although I'll admit it always makes me wonder about the provenance and how museum collections like that came to be. That's a much bigger conversation though. The staff were also fantastic. Everyone I spoke with was kind, approachable, and happy to share what they knew about the artwork and exhibits. You could tell they genuinely enjoyed being there. The only reason I almost docked a star was because I came across... well... a piece of poop on the gallery floor. It wasn't cleaned up immediately, and it seemed to sit there for a while before anyone noticed. It definitely caught me off guard. That said, I don't think it's really fair to blame the museum for another visitor's actions. Accidents happen, and while I wish it had been spotted sooner, it didn't take away from how much I enjoyed the museum overall. I assumed it was simply going to be a small house with a few displays, and I wasn't sure it would be worth the time. Boy, was I wrong. The city has done an outstanding job preserving and celebrating the life of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. His influence can be seen throughout the city. This site, the Boyhood Home & Museum is the perfect place to begin exploring everything Hannibal has to offer. Rather than being just a single historic house, the attraction actually consists of several buildings spread throughout the block, each focusing on different parts of Twain's childhood, family, writing, and legacy. The exhibits are well organized and do an excellent job telling the story of how a young boy growing up in this Mississippi River town eventually became one of America's greatest authors. As you walk through the different buildings, you'll recognize many of the places and people that later inspired characters and settings in books such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I especially enjoyed seeing how the museum connected Twain's real life with his famous stories. The buildings are well preserved, and there is a tremendous amount of history packed into the exhibits. Two challenges for the site are 1) it may be difficult for mobility impaired and 2) some of the informational signs located behind Plexiglas were a little difficult to read because of reflections. There is also a nice gift shop with plenty of books and souvenirs, along with a fun photo opportunity where visitors can pose helping Tom Sawyer "paint the fence." It's a clever addition that both children and adults seemed to enjoy. Overall, this attraction definitely exceeded my expectations. Whether you're a fan of Mark Twain, enjoy American history, or simply appreciate well-done historic sites, I would highly recommend visiting the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum. It is an excellent introduction to Hannibal and one of the highlights of the city. Enjoy!

I wish I had know about her when Aunt Betty died to donate her vast pig collection to the museum. She also rents rooms (Air B&B) for $40-$50 per night. We met a great Indain couple who had been there for 10 days taking advantage of working remote to stay in fun places and see the country. i can't wait to talk the stepdaughter.Go visit! But when we were ready to confirm, they advised us that they were bumping up the price by 40% (so $2,800 total), plus were adding a $500 cleaning fee, none of which was on their website or mentioned in any of their prior correspondence with us. Their excise was, "Oops, we didn't get around to updating the website?" Pathetic. Then, even though we'd already been communicating for a while, they said they wouldn't honor the $2,000 price. They said we were asking for a "discount," but what we were actually asking them to do was to simply honor their original quote. Their response was that they wouldn't budge on the preposterous $800 increase by even a dollar. A visit to the facilities is enjoyable. But avoid trying to do business with them, because they have no character or integrity.
