Winner, winner, sushi dinner. Who wudda thunk? A great sushi experience in the heart of Nebraska. This is my second sushi surprise this summer in the Midwest. First, Ichiban in Dubuque Iowa. Now Wasabi in Grand Island Nebraska. What is the world coming to? We landed at Wasabi on a road trip West staying the night in Grand Island. Wasabi offers Japanese Chinese fusion fare in a wonderfully fung shue Asian atmosphere. We chose to eat a selection of small appetizer plates from the Sushi bar and Japanese side of the kitchen. Overall awesome! If the Chinese offerings are in the scale of our Japanese fare, this place is a hidden Asian treasure. Our starter of salt and pepper calamari was perfect. We were told the calamari rings are fresh and cut in house. The tempura batter is also proprietary to the house, and one of the best I've had in recent memory. Light, crispy, well attached, and perfectly seasoned and cooked to a golden glow. My wife had a Sashimi Salad which was a delicately dressed assembly of lettuce, tako, maguro, sake (salmon), and kani (surimi crab). She loved it. For me, Sushi in Nebraska? Hmmm? Ever adventurous, I ordered the appetizer sampler. It was perfect in every possible way. Fresh, portion, rice, and a very simple presentation. Right out of a no frills Tokyo bistro. A respectful bow to the chef. This plate led me to ordering an ala carte plating of tako, surf clam, and unagi. Equally delightful. We obviously loved our food, but it was the table service that made the whole evening memorable. Xena, our server was a true professional and made two passing strangers feel like we were at home with family. I'd hire this talented and gracious young lady instantly. All great dining experiences often have one detraction and Wasabi did have theirs by our tastes. Gyoza. We always try the gyoza at any new Japanese restaurant we visit. And my own are rave favorites among our friends. These were home made, cooked perfectly, but just didn't work for us. I anticipate a gyoza being a light skin containing a pork, Napa cabbage, and possibly shrimp mix. These were more like a large all-beef meatball in a pasta shell. They are great for what they were, and I am so sorry to criticize an otherwise AWESOME kitchen and sushi bar, but the gyoza just didn't work for us. Don't judge Wasabi on the one item we didn't care for. This place is a winner hands down. Yes, sushi and Japanese fare is being well represented in the heart of Nebraska. If I'm ever overnight in Grand Island again, I'm headed here. Thank you for a really delightful dining experience. (Photos don't do Wasabi justice)

This was a nice choice for dinner. Chinese/Japanese food in Nebraska??? But Yes! The OMG roll is a must!

About once a year our family makes it up to Grand Island to visit Island Oasis and this year we decided on lunch at Wasabi Bistro before the Water Park. Keeping in mind that I have no comparison as I've not been to any other Asian Fusion places in GI, however, I would say some dishes were far better than others. For starters, their soup came out quickly after ordering and the hot and sour soup I got was rather delicious- albeit with an excessive portion of mushrooms compared to the other ingredients. (One odd thing is that the egg drop soup appeared orange for those who ordered it whereas I'm used to seeing it as yellow so not sure what's different there.) The salad was also delicious, especially the dressing as it resembled a carrot/ginger flavor. It was a basic iceberg mix with the dressing, but plentiful in portion. There was little room left for my 2 item sushi lunch combo by the time I devoured the soup and salad. So the sushi rolls were fairly meaty compared to many others I've had. It tasted a bit better than middle-of-the-road sushi. I got the dynamite roll and the salmon/avocado roll. Flavor was fine but not the best sushi I've had. One oddity to mention, we ordered 3 orders of the Crab Rangoon's and nearly no one at our table liked it. It was a sweeter flavor and my 2-year-old commented that it tasted like candy. To each their own, but I've never had a crab rangoon that tasted more like a sweet than a savory. To contrast, though, the sesame chicken that two of my kids got tasted pretty decent. The food was all over the place so this dish could've been good or terrible- it leaned towards the "good". Overall, it was a fine experience with good service and REALLY CLEAN BATHROOMS, however, the food was mediocre as best since it wasn't consistently good and I'm not sure anyone is dying to go back.

The waitress was very nice & attentive. We were able to make a few requests on one of our rolls that they happily changed for us. The honey walnut shrimp was amazing. I'm still thinking about the sauce, it was great! Very nice and clean place. Can't wait to come back!

Was not too bad for flavors. The Hawiian roll was delicious, but the miso soup lacked flavor. The ambiance was calming, and the place looked very clean. All in all wasn't a bad price for the service and food.

    Pannacotta!!! Yummmmmmm

Very good sushi, but Ive found the star dishes are the warmed ones. One of my favorite places to eat in Grand Island.

I stopped by here this past Saturday with my wife for some afternoon drinks. We arrived to Prairie…read morePride Brewing just as it was opening and were the only customers inside for a bit. Due that we were able to talk a bit to the bartender who was quite a nice fellow. This taproom consists of a small bar along with a bunch of tables behind it. They had a popcorn machine in the corner which the bartender turned on and then there were two TV's with the Vikings preseason game on them. Finally you could see through some glass behind the bar to where some of the brewing equipment was which is always nice in a microbrewery. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I decided to go with a flight here. At Prairie Pride Brewing that means that I got to choose 6 different tasters for $9. So I decided to go with the Good Country Wheat (BlackBerry/Lemon), Barn Burn (Amber Ale), Islander Porter (Coconut Porter), Wind Devil (Red IPA), Wild Prairie Orange (Blonde with Orange) and Out West (Session IPA). However after placing my order I was informed that they were out of the Porter and so I went with the Lip Kick (Imperial Brown Ale) instead. The first beer that I tried was the Good county Wheat which has a smooth start before the wheat flavor kicks in and then it had a bit of the advertised citrus on the finish. Up second was the Barn Burn which was smooth to start off with and then an interesting finish reminding me of a wheat like flavor instead of the Amber I was expecting. Third was the Lip Kick which is a beer where you can sort of taste the alcohol but you also get that caramel finish you would expect for a brown ale. Up fourth was the Wild prairie orange which had a super weird rubbing alcohol taste with a bit of orange at the finish. Something tasted off though and I can't imagine this is how it is supposed to taste. It ended up being the first beer in a long time that I didn't bother to finish. The fifth beer that I tried was the Out west which was the session IPA and it had a nice little bit of hops on the finish. Last but certainly not least was the Wind devil and you could definitely get the alcohol in this one but in a good way with a bit of the hops on the finish. Out of the bunch I think Out West was my favorite while the Wild Prairie Orange was clearly my least favorite. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Our bartender was super friendly to us and I enjoyed most of the beers that I drank here.
