Carry-out Order - Spicy Tuna Roll, Spicy California Roll, California Roll. I called and asked a simple question - is the Spicy Tuna Roll sweet at all? They were unable to answer that simple question. That was okay - maybe he was new. I placed my order and was told it would take 30-35 minutes. I was amazed at that time estimate but I waited - craving sushi. I got there and was asked to pay 16.39 for the three rolls. I was surprised because their online menu advertised the prices to be 5 - 4 - and 4 for the rolls. Those prices with tax would mean my lunch would cost just under 14 dollars. When I asked about the price difference, I was told that the company that printed their stylish menus went out of business. When they raised their prices, the company couldn't print new ones. So they simply kept the old ones with the wrong prices. I know this seems minor, but it is pretty crooked - especially for Fargo, ND. read more

This is hands down the best sushi place in the FM area, it can't be beat. I eat here very often with my SO because it's the best quality and service. The staff is super friendly and the chefs are so talented it hurts. (In a good way!) The people that cut and prepare the sushi and rolls know how to get every detail down just perfectly. It's a small, cozy little place that I will continue to go back to and wish great success far into the future. A breakdown of the best, dreamiest stuff they have: - Fresh Oysters that are amazing. HOLY BUCKETS! These are great, impeccable. Super fresh and taste of the ocean water and landscape. They are also the most affordable ones in the area. Please don't ever take these off the menu :) The chef made a terrific homemade spicy fish sauce that he gives customers the option of adding to them. That is the greatest homemade spicy sauce ever. I am going to offer him money to buy a bottle of it! - Terrific Ceviche. I don't know about you, but I cannot find this dish anywhere else in the FM area that I'm aware of. This one is a original recipe featuring fresh and raw cucumbers, avocado, onions, cilantro, raw squid and fish in a lime juice mixture. This is the food of the gods, the chef that came up with this is amazing. I want to eat it every day. It comes served with homemade wonton crisps. - The traditional miso, squid salad, and seaweed salad is all made wonderfully and taste fresh each time they are ordered. The miso is a unique sweet combination that is not often the case at other Asian restaurants. All of the rolls we have tried including the Dakota, Heartbreak are very good. The Sashimi is cut properly (like most places mess up) and is very fresh. The super white tuna is crazy cray cray tasty. (The octopus sashimi was awesome - they give you a tentacle rolled up!!!) - Also super impressive, they have hot meals that include Miso Steak, Beef/Pork Bugulgi and others. The Miso ribeye was super tasty and was grilled. It was super tender! The bulgolgi was made spot on tradition with the spices and reminded me of the homemade version my friend's mother used to make! We went for lunch on a Saturday around 2:00. The decor is very artsy and funky. The server was really friendly and attentive. We had a bottle of the unfiltered sake, which was excellent. We had a salmon specialty roll, Northern Pacific Roll, a spicy tuna roll and regular salmon roll. The NPR was really good - one of the best I've ever had. The table beside us ordered Sake Bombs - which looked really cool. Think of a Jager Bomb but with Sake and a blue energy drink. read more

Best Sushi Resturant around! Traveled all around the world and I sincerely like Wasabi the best. Their flavors are well balanced and their presentation is always creative/beautiful. If you want to eat quickly you might not like it, but if you like a bit slower pace lunch/dinner they are great! It has a very relaxed vibe and their staff have always been super professional, personable and prompt to any request. Their ambiance is simple and their new space is white, bright and kind of typical Fargo. Their previous location I did like more as it was unique, had great character, dim lighting, dramatic and a fun industrial vibe. The sushi here was...okay. The best part of the meal was actually the seaweed salad before the sushi! The sushi itself was adequate, but overpriced for what you get (perhaps, understandable in Fargo). The spicy tuna, in particular, wasn't very good...I've never had it just drenched in Sriracha before. I was also slightly put off by being handed a thing of tea bags for my green tea (the first time I've ever had that done at a Japanese place). I understand that it's Fargo and whatnot, but I don't feel like I can give it extra stars based on that alone. By far the best sushi in Fargo! The location is unique but I could see parking could get difficult in the evening or weekend. I ordered take out. A Sushi Roll, Broken Heart, I believe the name is and edamamee. The roll was delicious. I will definitely be ordering it again. The edamame was not so good. Very bland and not a lot of taste. Plus the wait for take is a bit long. 40min for a roll and it was not that busy. People who came in after I ordered ate and were leaving as I was just getting my roll. Not sure what the hold up was. I asked a few times how much longer it was going to be and the answer was always.. "just a few more minutes". I did get an apology once I had my roll. I will be back but will be asking how long of wait for food it will be before I order. read more

I was looking for a nice meal to surprise my sweetie with when I picked her up from the airport. We love Sushi and I've eaten at The Drunken Noodle (same owners and same building) before, so I settled on carryout from Wasabi. I ordered several of the specialty rolls, two miso soups and an order of sushi rice. Her plane was delayed so I munched on the sushi rice while I waited for her. Holy wow, was that rice amazing! A pile of sticky rice topped with some sort of sauce/broth (I think it may have been a sake broth), seaweed flakes and sesame seeds. It sounds really simple and it is, but it was so delicious. The rolls were well-formed, hand-crafted masterpieces. Even in to-go plastic containers the presentation really wowed me. We both tried all of the rolls, from the simple spicy yellowtail roll to the Yummy and the beautiful Dakota, and each of them were above and beyond my expectations. When I called in my to-go order, the gentleman who took my order suggested that I order the food as a dinner combo to save money (since I was ordering all of the components anyway) and checked my order thoroughly since it was a large order. I was really pleased with the level of service I received on the phone and the friendliness of the staff when I arrived to pick up my food. I did make the mistake of going to the host station to pick up my to go order. The to-go orders are actually picked up from The Drunken Noodle's to-go counter as you walk in, so you don't have to walk all the way back to Wasabi. The sushi really hit the spot and was the perfect choice for our reunion dinner. It was a spendy dinner for sure, about 70$, but it was worth every penny for the surprise and the huge quantity of amazing food. After hearing positive reviews from friends I was disappointed to have a less than stellar experience at Wasabi. The atmosphere was dank and it felt like I was dining in someone's unfinished basement. The wait staff was attentive but the kitchen took a long time to get our food out and it wasn't that busy. As for the food, the Miso soup was bland. Nobody at our table of 4 finished even half of theirs. I tried the Philadelphia roll, the Northern Pacific roll, and the Alaska roll. The Philadelphia roll tasted off. Not sure if it was the salmon or the cream cheese but I couldn't finish the roll. The Northern pacific roll was tasty. It looked nice on the plate and the spicy mayo was a highlight. The Alaska roll was also tasty but a bit difficult to eat as it fell apart easily. There's several choices for Sushi in the Fargo area now. After this experience, I would rate Wasabi near the bottom of the pack and I see no reason to rush back. read more

The "new location" has a "commercialized" feel. It lost its unique atmosphere and friendly staff appeal. They now have a "poke bowl" fast food lane at the front of the restaurant that I'm sure is good for folks on the go. However, the manager walked by twice never saying hello or explaining there's a long wait. (Never experienced that attitude in the past) he twice made eye contact and his eyes said he was to busy for more people. There is a half assed reservation list, nothing online said we could make a reservation in advance. I finally invited myself to walk thru and look this new location over. I was saddened. The employees looked stressed and unhappy. The customers were a trendy nice crowd that seemed to be understanding of the stressful service environment and they were at least seated and getting some of the good food and service we've come to know. The new location has none of the old dark wood tables that were a staple and suited a sushi bar type restaurant very well. Now they have new fake looking wood tables. A wall of fancy liquor bottles that were placed by someone who does "interior design and flow". It looks nice, it still robbed the traditional appeal of the original location. They now have less seating, which is confusing, who gains a similar space and then has less seating....where they expecting less customers? All in all, we ended up leaving the third time the waitstaff and host noticed me and still didn't acknowledge me or the rest of our family. I'm not a snob. I have worked in the dining industry. I have very realistic expectations of restaurants and give opportunities to treat me the way all hungry customers wish to be treated....like we want to come in and enjoy your services, food and beverages. The best sushi place in Fargo next to Osaka! However: 1. The nori used for sushi is low quality and chewy. I find myself often choking on it. If they fixed this their sushi would surpass Osaka's. 2. The atmosphere of the place is nice but it's small and sometimes they play questionable music. The music isn't necessarily bad, but I don't want to relax and enjoy a nice meal with friends while Skrillex is blasted over the speakers (this literally happened). 3. Always understaffed! The wait staff is very friendly but you will almost without a doubt be waiting at least a half hour for your food. Wasabi moved to a new location. Upon arrival, we immediately noticed the extremely small space they now occupied. In their previous location, they always had a waiting list, Friday and Saturday nights particularly, so we are wondering how they are going to support that or if they have dropped that much in clientele with this move that they don't have to worry about it anymore. We ordered an appetizer that we used to order often at the other location, only to be given something smaller (still the same price, mind you) and not at all similar to what it used to be. When the food came, the sushi was as good as it had been before, but the other orders were not even remotely close to what they used to be and were cold. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. This was a favorite for our entire family and now we will probably not return. read more

I am 29 years old and was a waitress for 10 years of my life. I don't remember the last time I had such a bad experience in a restaurant. My party was seated right away upon arriving... so far so good. The waiter took our drink order right away, we all got our drinks except for one person who ended up waiting 10 minutes for her glass of wine. (no exaggeration) I eventually had to flag down the waiter to make him aware of this. Three of us ordered sushi and the girl who waited for her wine ordered chicken teriyaki. We sat there and waited for over an hour for our meal. The waiter came over twice to assure us that it would be done soon during that time. The second time he mentioned that the chicken teriyaki was the hold up but that it was almost done. Maybe it's just me but I'm pretty sure that chicken should not take an hour to cook! Finally the sushi was brought out and we were told the chicken would be following directly behind. After the 3 of us finished our sushi the waiter came back to say that the order had been mixed up and the chicken wasn't done yet... and the only thing he offered to rectify the situation was a glass of wine on the house. She asked him how long it would be until it came out and he said about 10 more minutes!!! The waiter didn't even seem at all sorry that, for one thing, we had to wait over an hour for our food but most importantly, a member of our party came to a restaurant hungry and left hungry. Wasabi is a roll-centric sushi and Asian fusion restaurant in the heart of downtown Fargo. It is associated with although distinct from the Drunken Noodle, which shares the building and restaurant space (you can order Drunken Noodle from Wasabi, but I don't know if you can order sushi from the Drunken Noodle). It offers and specializes in rolls, but also offers some nigiri-sushi and sashimi options; however, the selection is limited compared with the your typical sushi restaurants. They also offer an assortment of dishes that are styled as Asian dishes, largely because they feature meats that are cooked with teriyaki and served with rice. The decor is simple and mordern with ample seating options, and you can always sit at the bar with the sushi chefs right in front of you. I have visited with groups of various sizes, and service has always been accommodating. I have an overall positive impression of Wasabi. It is certainly a much better sushi restaurant than I expected in the Fargo area; even better, it's part of the downtown community. I have always been content with the sushi that I've had there, but does it really satisfy that need to branch out and really explore sushi? I don't think so. My guess is that you will really enjoy Wasabi if you tend to prefer rolled sushi, especially when those rolls are deep fried, smothered in mayo, or a sweetened teriyaki sauce. They actually make some visually interesting rolls and clearly put great effort into presentation. For those bringing sushi experience, especially the California or northwestern options, you're likely to walk away disappointed. For me, I really enjoy nigiri sushi, but this is definitely not Wasabi's strength. Don't get me wrong, they have nigiri, and it's well prepared and sometimes very tasty, but it seems that they offer it incidentally to their rolls. With that said, it's a very decent option if exploring the food in the downtown area, and it's certainly a different meal than the average Fargo-Moorhead restaurant. It's important to keep in mind that Fargo is just a few hours from the dead center of the North American continent, so sushi is an unexpected oddity for the area. Wasabi is delivering on the preferences of the locals, and it's very important to remember that those preferences may not reflect the options that are experienced elsewhere. With that said, you aren't going to find anything remotely similar in the downtown scene, and Wasabi is well known amongst locals for delivering a fresh and experimental take on a cuisine that has only recently been introduced here. Reshape your expectations and Wasabi will deliver more than you thought possible in downtown Fargo. read more

Wasabi is one of the few sushi restaurants in North Dakota. Because of this, it is probably easy to say it is one of the best as well. But for what it offers, the prices, and the service, its easy to give it 5-star approval. My fiance and I, accompanied by my sister and her fiance have made visits to Wasabi a new tradition. Since I have had such few opportunities to dine in authentic sushi restaurants, it comes as little surprise that its the best sushi I have had. The prices are very reasonable. A roll costs approximately 4-6 dollars, and are very generously sized. The menu has a wide variety of roll options for customers to choose from. The service is top notch; very polite and accommodating to any newcomers to the sushi world. We've been regulars of Wasabi for years and it was always our go to place when we wanted sushi. Even after moving out of state, we would make a point to stop and eat here until our experience this evening. We arrived for our reservation to celebrate my birthday, we were 1 of 3 tables in the restaurant and immediately were made to feel like we were incoveniencing them. From taking 45 minutes to order to being noticeably perceived as annoying by asking for beverages and soy sauce ramekins after the sushi came is just plain unacceptable. The service we received could possibly have been some of the worst Ive ever experienced, ever. I was in the restaurant industry for almost 15 year from host to server to manager and couldnt imagine treating customers like we were treated without expecting the business to fail. I always loved this place and the sushi tonight was decent, but the service tonight was bad enough that I wont ever step foot in this establishment again. I even felt the need to apologize to my own family after dinner for how awful we were treated, on my birthday no less. Enough said. read more

Decided to try Wasabi after I had heard great things about it. It is hidden in the back of another restaurant. Nice atmosphere. Waiter was very good. I got the Korean Bulgogi bento box. I loved the Bento Box. Bulgogi was very good. I lived in Korea for 4 years and I know my Korean food. My wife had a noodle dish. We both really enjoyed to food and the entrees were only 10 dollars each. I saw about ten other items on the menu I wanted to try. I will be back there soon. The rice in the bento box was sweet rice. Excellent. The bento box also had two small pieces of sushi. It was very very good. I will be back there soon to try another menu item. read more
