Dr. Chu and staff are very professional, wish to say the same for the optical store or that Indian lady working there. I ordered my progressive lenses (computer) in August 2025, and the lady never called me back to tell me if the lenses are ready. From August to October (10/20/2025), it's been two months, no calls, I am so upset. I already paid and insurance claimed and nothing. I've called many times, and still.. My father recently underwent cataracts surgery for both eyes. Dr. Chu and his staff made the whole system a breeze! My father does not like to go to doctors and is often overwhelmed by all the questions that offices ask. Dr. Chu understands how scary it can be and talks to you until you are comfortable and understand. His office is very accommodating. If you are Chinese, there are several people that can speak to you in Mandarin. They have hours at all different times and will even accommodate Saturday Appointments. Please know that they are also the best at cataracts surgery. My father can now see far and close and does not even need glasses. The surgery itself is very quick and practically no recovery time. Laser may sound scary but it is totally worth it. It's a very busy office, but they run it well. Wait times are never super long and everyone is on their A game. There is a large office and ample parking. They also seem to have very fancy equipment which is much better than some other eye doctors I've seen in the area. After reading the previous reviews I felt I just had to weigh in. Dr Chu has served 3 generations (including me) of my family very well. We've been his patients for more 15+ years. He primarily caters to the chinese community - and quite frankly, sometimes they are a little more brusque than western manners prefer. But since I don't go to an opthamologist for his bedside manner, this doesn't quite matter to me so much. What I care about his is breadth of knowledge and his ability to care for my vision holisticaly. He helped my grandmother keep her vision much longer that perhaps she might have - and has enabled my mother (86yrs old) who has glaucoma and perhaps a bit of macular degeneration. In addition, he performed her cataract surgery with much success. I have never gotten a perscription from him that was off in my glasses (and I wear progressives) - and he worked through several trial pairs of contacts to get the right fit on a multi-focal lens - I have astigmatism, myopia and presbyopia. This was the doctor who looked into my eyes and indicated that I needed to talk to my primary care physician about my blood pressure medication. My pressure was within general normal limits - but it was still too high for me to have healthy eyes and he caught it. Change of meds fixed everything. No one that I've ever recommended to Dr Chu has come back with a complaint. You might not want to buy your glasses from him (because they are just too expensive), but for healthy eyes...he's a great doctor. If you just want a pair of glasses or contacts you can go just about anywhere. But if you have or need to deal with diseases of the eye or a loss of vision... I highly recommend him. read more

Please read the filtered reviews. IF I could give negative stars I would. Let me first start off by saying I was referred to Dr. Chue by my supervisor as I usually go to myeyedr. I made an emergency appointment bc I was waking up everyday with blurry vision and my eyes were extremely sensitive to light. When I get to my visit I spent literally 5 mins with the doctor and he told me my condition was due to me having ocular migraine and the symptoms would pass; and was quickly dismissed. 3 days later after my visit with this doctor my symptoms were still the same. I decided to return back to myeyedr and was told my issues were due to me having extremely dry eyes that cause some inflammation on my cornea. THANK God I followed up and went to see another doctor. He is a great and highly skilled surgeon (having removed my cataract and superbly performed my multifocal implants through laser surgery). I would give a zero if it is an option. The office was disorganized. Even during this COVID time, the waiting room had more than 10 patients and the front office did not ask for any COVID screening questionnaire from patients. No pre-visit screening or any other measures. The office staff didn't seem to care. The front desk area was crowded and the testing areas were also crowded. The cleaning after each patient was not thorough. And the wait to be seen was long, which was not acceptable during COVID time. This is the worst medical practice I have visited since COVID. No screening measures taken. The doctor was standoffish and didn't listen or care about patients. He treated patients like we were idiots. His treatment plan failed but he didn't care to admit and just argued. He and his team are simply incompetent. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

I am very disappointed with the services I received from Dr. Chu and have since chosen a different opthamologist. First off, his office is essentially run like a factory - at any given time, there are about 15 people waiting in the waiting area! I don't know if they schedule appointments every 5 minutes or so or what, but the receptionist up front is understandably frazzled having to deal with so many patients. Dr. Chu seems like a nice enough person but I could tell that he wanted to spend as little time with me so that he could hurry off to his next appointment. He probably spent less than 10 minutes with me. After I received my contact lenses, the fit was awful -- the lens did not sit properly on my eye, so I had to book yet another appointment with Dr. Chu to figure out what was going on. Of course, the office looked like a zoo that day as well and I waited quite a long time (about 45 minutes!) to be seen. He examined my lenses and gave me a new prescription. Although my lenses "sat" better on my eye, I still have a hard time seeing. The prescription just seemed off. I now have a new opthamologist who is much, much better. He said that my last prescription for contact lenses was probably inaccurate, which explained why I had such a hard time seeing. Try to avoid this place if possible. read more

I'm very nearsighted, and I always get an annual eye checkup because I'm at risk for retinal tearing. So when I had intermittent minor flashes of light in my vision, temporarily living in Maryland for work, I thought I would arrange an appointment with an in-vision-insurance-network ophthamologist and get my free, insurance-covered annual routine eye exam. I came in, told them about my vision insurance plan, filled out the forms and mentioned some minor flashes I'd been having, and then waited for about 45 minutes in a room with maybe 4 other people, tops. Long wait. The assistant ran my glasses and updated my prescription, with only minor changes. Because of my severe nearsightedness, I usually get my eyes dilated to check for additional issues. Dr. Chu performed this part of the exam; he was very professional and performed the normal "look in this direction" eye testing, and told me that I was fine, not to worry. Nothing out of the ordinary for someone who gets the same eye exam like clockwork every year from optometrists and ophthamologists alike. Coming out of the exam room, I was given no bill, as I expected, told everything was good to go, and see you later! Great. So you can imagine my surprise when I recently got a bill from them. Huh? No mention of my vision insurance - my medical insurance covered it instead. Why I was I being charged? Why had no one said anything to me before I left? So I called Dr. Chu's office, explained my situation, and I could hear the receptionist rolling her eyes as she laughed - laughed! - at me. She said something like, "Um, well, you said flashes, so it became medical, you know... you're at a medical doctor's office. You should know Dr. Chu's going to be on top of that." Now that I know the full explanation, fair enough. But let me get this straight. They didn't do anything beyond what a run of the mill optometrist would do. They used my mention of flashes to switch it over to a different insurance so they could charge $550 for a routine annual exam. They didn't tell me that I would be charged or how insurance would be handled. And then I get laughed at over the phone when I call them asking them to please explain the bill? And did I mention they didn't give me my new eye prescription right away? Dr. Chu said he'd "hold onto it" for me until I decided I wanted new glasses. Why wouldn't he just give it to me? Probably because he wanted to escort me to the glasses center in the waiting area. I had to call back and have it emailed instead. Beyond reasonable. Two stars - one for the doctor's professionalism when he was doing the exam; he certainly knows what he's doing. Zero for everything else. read more

NEGLIGENT!! WORST doctor ever. put me on steroids without monitoring which leaded to extremely high eye pressure, at which point he still claimed a small problem. I went to a different doctor and they were shocked and started treating me right away and wouldn't let me leave until the skyrocketing eye pressure (easily CAUSE BLINDNESS) was pushed down. It makes me sad what a bad rap this office seems to be getting on Yelp. I was there in April - I chose them based off of ZocDoc reviews. I thought the staff were all pleasant and helpful and I really liked Dr. Chu. I have been going to MyEyeDr for a few years but decided to see an actual Opthamologist because I'd been having a weird symptom that the guy at MyEyeDr was totally dismissing. I causally mentioned it at the end of my exam to Dr. Chu and he knew EXACTLY what it was! Did a quick test and sure enough, apparently I'm mildly cross-eyed. Who knew. Better yet, there are lenses I can wear to help manage the issue. Even more impressive, he mentioned that people with this often are really bothered by 3D movies and I mentioned my dad gets super nauseous watching them. Dr. Chu is, first and foremost, a gentleman. My wife and I have been patients of his for the last four years, and enjoy his professionalism. He has accurately diagnosed our eye problems, and continues to allow us to make decisions about our treatment, never hurrying us or trying to sell us something. When I finally agreed that cataracts were hindering my sight, he acted promptly to replace both lenses. The results were absolutely foolproof, with no complications whatsoever. When he gave me my follow-up examination, he didn't prescribe reading glasses. He advised me that the inexpensive kind you buy at drug stores would be enough. Both of my parents had surgeries done by Dr.Chu. I am very happy that the surgeries were very successful. I can only say positive things about Dr Chu and his team. After an emergency room visit, I was scheduled with an after hours visit with Dr Chu, who answered all my questions clearly and patiently. I spent I spent a lot of time wondering why I go to my eye doctor every year and every year my glasses creep up two more started at 200 started it then 300-400 it got to be near $600 a year for glasses I could barely afford them so I decided to go to to three different eye doctors and and paid out of pocket to form my own opinion of these doctors every last one of them gave me a different diagnosis a reason the glasses I had to keep bringing back to be redone cuz I couldn't see out of them after 3 months of getting them then I went to Dr. Chu's office recommended by another patient it took me a year to decide to use. Dr. Chu but I eventually made an appointment went in to see this doctor and he immediately change my glasses prescription and examine my eyes real thoroughly I ended up not needing glasses and eventually after 2 years of visiting him I did have to have cataract surgery which he was fantastic the job was fantastic I just had the surgery in October 2018 and I'm pretty satisfied seems to be working great I can actually see words on papers. I am very satisfied with the care that I got from dr. Chu and his staff and I would recommend him to anyone who's having problems with their glasses can't see need to have the eye surgery he is the best and I have recommended him to several people and they were happy that I did Thank you Dr Chu. read more

Charge as they please! We have been to Dr. Chu's office couple times and everything was fine and Dr. Chu is very friendly. However in Aug this year, my wife brought our son in for a regular check-up which is covered by our insurance. Dr. Chu asked her if she has any concerns. My wife told him that our son blanks his eyes quite a lot. All Dr. Chu said was that our son "might have a tic problem which is benign." At the end of the visit, they charged us for a specialist fee as they claimed that comment was outside of the regular check-up. My wife refused at first, but they brought out more employees to argue with her. Having our little kids with her, my wife gave in and paid the $45 co-pay. Now they sent us another bill asking for more money. They said since my wife paid the $45, she agreed that it was medical and we need to pay more now. We wouldn't mind to pay if the doctor made it clear to my wife that his comments will be outside of the regular check-up BEFORE he made those comments. Think twice before you go, we don't want this happen to anyone else. read more

Dr. Chu's staff was able to fit me in for an emergency appointment within an hour, and I had virtually no wait. Dr. Chu and his technician were extremely thorough in their examination and determined that there was no tear. Dr. Chu also provided a complete, detailed explanation of what had likely occurred and made it clear that I had done the correct thing by calling them. Dr. Robert Chu and his staff are truly top-notch! About 4 -5 years ago, I had an eye emergency where I awakened during the night with the most excruciating eye pain. In the morning, I called at least 10 local ophthalmologists and no one could fit me in... until I called Dr. Chu's office. The receptionist was so gracious on the phone and told me to hold on until she searched his schedule to see where she could fit me in, even though there were no apparent openings for the day. She was able to find a same-day appointment for me. I came in and did not have to wait long for Dr. Chu to diagnose the problem, as well as prescribe very helpful medication. In addition, he asked me if I had an auto-immune disease, and I told him not that I knew. He told me to have my physician's investigate this further. Long story short, I did have an auto-immune disease, R.A., and he, the random ophthalmologist that I went to for an emergency visit was the first to recognize the signs and symptoms and put me on the road to proper health care. Fast forward to this summer. I had a similar eye issue and called his office, and AGAIN they were able to squeeze me into the schedule for a same-day appointment! He again diagnosed me accurately, prescribed adequate medication and gave me helpful instructions to deal with the issue. Not only is Dr. Chu helpful, attentive, skilled, kind, with a great bedside manner, but his staff are also very thoughtful, friendly and accommodating. Today was my second appointments with Dr. Chu, and I am convinced he is a knowledgeable professional with a well organized staff. Each of my experiences was pleasant, the wait time was minimum, his staff was efficient, and Dr. Chu was helpful and he took the time to answer all my questions. Dr. Chu is currently treating my left eye with medication in order to control and to reduce the high pressure which was damaging the vision in that eye. This second visit with Dr. Chu revealed that the eye pressure had dropped to near normal range. By following recommendations from Dr. Chu, we are expecting the eye pressure to be within the normal range at next weeks visit. My visits to Dr. Chu's office have been purely for the routine vision exam; I have not needed any medical treatment. My interactions with him and his staff have been nothing short of professional. Upon entering the office, the reception always handles the standard insurance/personal details - while they may seem initially curt, they take their time to provide the most accurate information. As long as you have questions, they will elucidate the answer. All of my vision exams have started with an assistant, doing initial screening, vision tests, and have all ended with Dr. Chu coming in to meet me. The kind of patient-doctor interaction has always been caring and personalized, leading me to return again and again. The frames and glasses selection can range in price; while some can be quite pricey, there are affordable options. I would personally recommend going elsewhere for frames. My mother and I went to Robert H Chu, MD, for glasses. Thea pair of glasses which Dr. Chu prescribed for her made her extremely dizzy. However, he refused to ameliorate them and resorted to bully us into accepting that the glasses were fine. We tried to explain to him that they really were creating dizziness, but instead of listening to our concerns, he simply ignored them and adamantly refused to admit that he had made a mistake. I have been seeing Dr. Chu for at more than five years, and probably closer to ten. I have always found him to be very caring, attentive, and knowledgeable. He is always very aware of the latest developments, and implements them when they will benefit patients. He explains everything, and I tend to ask a lot of questions.
