This is probably the worst gas company in the entire country. I'm willing to bet money on it. This company has shut off our gas multiple times when they were either supposed to be performing maintenance or upgrades, WE WENT WITHOUT HOT WATER FOR 6 DAYS and they gave us NOTHING but a sorry ass apology. They will tell you that your meter is outside and no one has to be home but will come and turn off your gas for whatever stupid reason and say "oh well no one was home". They have billed us over $500 in fees from a PREVIOUS tenant, have not given one explanation as to why our bill is always incorrect and never rectifies a thing. I get a headache every time I speak to one of their representatives. I am looking for a new dwelling because of this company. My advice to you is if you have the option to live somewhere that isn't maintained by Washington gas, good God please do it, don't waste your time or your hard earned money with these people. Worst customer service and website, I am trying to set up an account and their website will not allow me to register without an account number. When I try to put in the info I get an error message saying it doesn't recognize the property or address. When I try to call I am stuck waiting for 45 minutes just for someone to give me an attitude. I have been attempting to set up auto-pay now for the better part of a year. Every time I do, I get an e-mail saying that setting up auto-pay was successful. But, spoiler alert: it isn't set up. Then they charge me late fees and/or threaten to discontinue my service. Customer service keeps assuring me that I won't be charged late fees, but guess what. I keep getting charged late fees. And they're not refunded. Dear enterprising class-action lawyers: I bet there is a good class action lawsuit available here with a class of everyone who has been having to use this terrible Washington Gas website. Oh yeah, and customer service responds as much as five or six weeks after you complain. (e.g., I found out in June 2016 that my autopay I tried setting up in February didn't work. If you ever need an argument for why monopolies are bad, look no farther than utilities. I had a problem because the guys who live in the upper part of the house I live in moved out and had the gas turned off. Unbeknown to me, their gas line was actually serving the water heater that both apartments shared. Therefore, no hot water. None of that is any of Washington Gas's fault though. The first problem is that they can't come hook it up for several days. Cold showers suck. The second and bigger problem is that the window they tell me they can come by is from 7am-5pm. Let's just call it what it is and say "he'll show up on Friday". Not like I have to go to WORK or anything. "Can you give me a smaller window?" I ask. Nope. How is it that Safeway can manage to deliver my groceries within a two hour window of my choosing, but the gas people can only narrow it down to ten hours, three days after I call? Holy shit. You ever wait on hold so long that your ear hurts from the phone receiver? I was relocating from Chicago to Washington DC and called Washington Gas to set up service. I was connected to a call center in the Philippines where apparently the speaker volume on their phones is set to "library". Despite the obvious language barrier, everything was OK until I was told that since the previous tenant in my apartment left a huge balance, that I needed to fax over a copy of my lease before they could connect the service. I suppose I needed this to show that whoever lived there before me wasn't just trying to pull a switcheroo which I understand, but I wasn't getting my lease until the day that I was moving in, so I told then that I could send then or have my landlord email it. "No! No email! Fax only!" OK dude, calm your tits. So on Monday after I received my lease, I called back to restart the process, fax over my lease and copy of my ID, and was told that I would receive a call later that day to schedule the service technician. But no call came. I called the next day and was told that it would take 14 business days to receive the fax. What. The. Eff??? By fax? So what do I fax it to someone in DC, and then they attach it to a courier pigeon to head to the Philippines???? After a lot and I mean a LOT of hullabaloo I ended up asking to speak to someone in the corporate office because I 1. couldn't stand anymore of the Lost in Translation bullshit, and 2. I'm convinced that the call center only has 5 employees and I've spoken to each and every incompetent one of them. "Elmo", "Amy", "Rain", "Hannah" and that asshole "Blair". Finally after waking up to a freezing cold apartment in 12 degree weather for too many days, Susan in their corporate office said that someone will be at my home tomorrow morning to connect the service. This is the local gas company for my area though I hear that soon they wont have a monopoly but another company is emerging to give them competition. Given this, I figured it might be worth writing a review. This company is infamous for its horrid customer service. In my two months living in this area so far: - I called to switch my apartment gas in to my name, waited on the phone for quite some time, finally got my information taken down by a rep who assured me that the change would take place within a day and even made me pause as she supposedly put things into the computer. - I never received a bill from them and attempted to contact them multiple times through their online form (conveniently leaving no paper trail). - I got a bill from my apt complex for never turning my gas over to my name, supposedly, as well as a $50 surcharge for their trouble. - I called to complain and was placed on hold for 40 minutes just waiting to talk to a customer service representative. I then talked to a man who couldn't understand me but claimed that he turned it over in to my name. When I asked to speak to his manager just to clear up what happened when I first turned it over he put me on hold for 10 more minutes and then I got an automated message saying that that were experiencing "technical difficulties" that booted me back to the beginning of the now-50-minute waiting line. - I still have not received a bill although I think that I've been charged automatically every month from the info I originally gave the first woman. Now they're double charging my apt complex and myself and the apt is adding a fee. The leasing agents apologized profusely saying that everyone has had trouble with this company and that nearly everyone will be switching to the competition when they come in to the market. I'm still left without any recourse when it comes to demonstrating that I actually did set this thing up to begin with, though. A strong argument for antitrust law. read more

Maybe one of the worst companies I have EVER had the displeasure of dealing with. Absolutely HORRIBLE customer service. I had a window for them to come yesterday from 7am-5pm. Ok, so for starters that is absurd but I accepted it. Guess what? They never came. Unreal. I called them at 4:45pm to say where are you. The lady in the Phillipeans had no idea and said they will be there for sure at some point by tonight. They never came. As others have mentioned, a call center in the Phillapeans means they have NO clue what is going on here and cannot connect you with anyone. They just keep apologizing and saying I'm so sorry, someone will get back to you. Which has never ever happened. My whole reason for the call was they damaged my property. They were doing work on our street (not at our request) and they broke all the cement on our sidewalk. They dug holes in our yard. We asked them at the time if they will repair it and they said, yes you will never even notice we were here. Well, they never fixed it and this was 2 months ago. Since then, I have called every two weeks to ask when they are coming to fix it. I have received a different answer every time. Finally two days ago, I scheduled an appointment and they never came. I will DEFINILTEY be canceling my service with this horrible company as soon as possible. Not to mention look into taking them to small claims court. Horrible horible company. I wanted share my experience with you all to others had the same experience as I just did Overview of this message is Washington Gas is refusing to cancel my service and still charging me for the gas I am not using. I moved out of my apartment in late November and I submitted a request to cancel my service with Washington Gas. I received a confirmation that my services will be canceled on 02-December-2014. However, I received a bill for December and currently being metered for January being denied to cancel service. My current apartment doesn't have gas so we couldn't transfer the service. I called their customer service, twice, and both times they refused to cancel my service because a technician wasn't available to get inside the apartment. I would assume for good customer service they would notify us with an email, at the lest, or phone call letting us know about this. However, they deiced to continue the service even though they promised (according to their confirmation). To cancel the service they told me that I have to be present at the apartment since the meter is inside. I do not live in that apartment anymore, since I can't get in the service be canceled. They promised me with the confirmation that the services will be canceled on December 2nd. Why isn't this enough to cancel a service I don't know. Another important note is that Washington Gas is most likely charging the meter twice, since the apartment is probably being rented to someone. Personally as a customer I should be able to cancel a service and should not be refused to cancel it. If a technician was needed us to be on at the site this should have been stated in the email. If a technician visited the site and no one was available at the house, they should have let us know. There are so many things wrong and could have been right, however, the company says the way things are now is their policy and can not be changed. read more

Their website may just well be the worst on the internet. My guess is it was designed in 1997. Its slow, and the bill pay service is archaic. Good luck getting anything of substance from the site. I have signed up for auto-pay and budget billing multiple times but it never goes into effect. In addition, I schedule payments and they don't show on the website (although I receive emails stating the payment has been scheduled). But with that said, I have had no problems with their service, hence the 2 stars. read more

One of the worst service providers of any kind that I have ever had the displeasure of working with. On two occasions I had tried to stop or transfer old service (either off entirely or to a new address) which was botched. They never send you confirmation for anything even if you ask. The call center has no authority to do anything whatsoever INCLUDING sending you confirmation of requests. This year I tried to get that confirmation in writing so I don't run into this problem once again and was told by the person I called that they are not allowed to send email confirmations. Not allowed to email confirmation? How can anything be confirmed these days without something in writing. They're a bunch of legal con artists over there. I also was double charged more than once on their online billing system and went through the most aggravating nightmare trying to credit back my debit card for the over charge. Of course in 2013 they were baffled by the idea of anyone wanting their debit card credited and implied such technology didn't exist. The only thing they could do was credit my account for future billing (which was unnecessary as I was ready to disconnect at the time). I had to go through BBB who quickly had my debit card credited back. This was the second time this occurred. The first long battle ended with me accepting the account credit. Don't let their shiny BBB rating and JD Power awards for customer satisfaction fool you. They're thieving con artists and possibly the worst service provider I've ever worked with. If they had even a single competitor they'd be forced to get their act straight real quick. At the end of the day we're forced to use them if we have gas in our homes or apartments but don't take their crap lying down. Give them a piece of your mind and maybe over time our persistence might force them to change their ways. I wish I could give them less than one star. read more

Where to start?? I've been in an on-going feud with Washington Gas since October 2012. Like another reviewer, I called to have the gas account put in my name upon moving in May 2012. The first bill I got was in September for $0.00. Yes, that's right...my balance was ZERO. Now, to many, that might be a good thing but I knew it was wrong. So what does any good citizen do? Call Washington Gas and inform them of the error. I would hate to get a bill later down the road for something ridiculous like $800. But what does the customer service rep tell me? "Ma'am we assure you that the bill is correct. You don't have a balance with us." Really?? I've been cooking in my house since I got there and I just knew this was the start to something horrible. It's now heading to the second month in 2013 and I still don't have anything resolved. All the while, my apartment complex continues to charge me vacant gas fees. My utility company is understanding but only so much as they need their money as well. Needless to say, Washington Gas and their seemingly friendly customer service agents are well below the competence level to be talking/helping people. Worst company ever! This is hands down the hardest company to deal with. Moved into my new place and filled out the new customer form twice, the second time it acknowledged that I have an account. Fast forward a few weeks later, no letter, no phone calls, no nothing my gas goes off. My heat/water/stove are all using gas. The next available time for them to come turn my gas on is five days from today. How is this acceptable when I live in an area prone to freezing temperatures? Thank god it is not the case. I'm still working up the ladder to get to talk to a manager. If you are trying to escalate do not let them tell you that the supervisor is busy and they will call you back later. No sign yet. 6 phones calls each time the customer service rep would disconnect me after any where from 30-40 minute conversation or when I asked to be to supervisor. I don't know if they're overworked or simply don't care, but their customer service is terrible. Case in point: we had to arrange for gas shut-off in advance of construction. After a lengthy application process ("we don't know how the web works, so fill out our PDF online then save it and email it to us!") and wait, Washington Gas sends someone unscheduled and unannounced to shut off our service. Now, somewhat obviously, you don't shut off the gas to a building you're occupying, especially in the fall with colder temps approaching. Lots of twists and turns here, but you're with me so far, right? Well, the tech gets to the house, but no one is home (because we moved out, in part because we didn't want to live in a house with no utility service). Does the tech A) complete the work order as requested, in writing, a month in advance, B) call the contact number on the application to say "I'm here, you're not, you sure you want me to cut off the gas?" or C) leave without cutting off the service and have the home office send a form letter over a week later TO THE UNOCCUPIED HOUSE? Yup. That cost us 3-4 additional weeks against our construction timeline. Second case in point: my father in law noticed our old oven was supplied with natural gas by a copper pipe. He's accustomed to seeing gas piped through black pipe. So I send an email to Washinton Gas asking if copper is acceptable or if I should have it replaced. Do they reply A) copper is acceptable per building code, B) copper is not acceptable, or C) we don't comment on materials within a home? Yup, option C again. (Seriously, WTF? I'm asking if a pipe is safe and you're basically telling me you don't want to get into it?) Shape up, Washington Gas: you're a dumpster fire. read more

Over the past year Washington Gas has gone from bad to a complete disgrace. I've spent 6 months trying to reestablish a direct debt for my gas account, without success. The website is utterly broken -- I tried to reset my password innumerable times, without success. The customer support people available by phone are pleasant but totally unable to resolve the issues. The regulatory agency for this utility must step in to address the dysfunction of its operation. As consumers, we have no choice in the matter of gas distribution, and this implies a serious responsibility for ensuring that Washington Gas is functioning at some basic level, which is not currently the case. read more

I ended up paying for another customer's gas (one month's worth) after we had moved out due to a (estimated reading - why would anyone in the universe request an estimated reading as a final bill??) mistake made by Washington Gas. This review is a warning that you can succeed in your fight against this corporation behemoth. They do not admit mistakes, do not listen to their customers, do not stand behind their brand promise, or honestly have any power to affect your account. Horrible service. I think their service call center is in India. I can barely understand what they are saying but I can tell that they are being condescending and rude. They gave me a window of 9-5. Contractor showed up at 7pm. I find out 2 weeks later (after paying for a repairman) that my dryer is not working because Washington Gas did something to the connection to my dryer. I call Washington Gas and I swear I got the same customer service rep. I explain the situation and she tells me that I can pay a contractor to come 'repair' my dryer because Washington Gas does not repair appliances. I explain the situation 3 times. She reads the same script to me three times. I ask for a supervisor, she puts me on hold, comes back to the line and reads the same script to me AGAIN. She asks to put me on hold again. I say to her do not read that script to me again. Put a supervisor on the line. Finally, I get a 'supervisor'. His English is only slightly better than hers but not much. I explain the situation AGAIN. He cuts me off and says "I don't mean to cut you off...; but why didn't you make sure that our technician did it correctly when he was there?". I'm about to lose it but I don't . I tell him, "because I don't work for Washington Gas and I'm not a technician - how am I supposed to know what he's supposed to do?" Ten minutes later he tells me that he is going to send a technician out today- and it can be anytime today and someone must be home. And by the way "we do not repair appliances- do you understand". I am offended and livid and I tell him "the comprehension problem is not on this end". Then I say- "I want to confirm that you are not going to charge me for this service call." I wish you could give zero stars. Washington Gas is the worst public utility company I've ever had the displeasure of having to depend upon. I set-up my account for a move in date of October 20. Late November I get my first bill - which stated I had a "previous balance" of $170. That's funny - given this was my first bill. I called customer service for clarification. They claimed the 170 included a security deposit and start up fee (none of which they mentioned when I set up my account). I said that was fine, but I needed to see an itemized bill showing that. Also - there were other fees in this mysterious bill from August. To correct those charges they asked that I send a copy of my lease to prove my move in date. Two weeks later, to my pleasant surprise, I received 2 emails. The first indicated that my account was not set up correctly so they set up a new account for me. Great! The second email - sent to the old account number - showed a reduced charge. Great! But wait - I got too far ahead of myself. I tried to access my new account - it didn't exist. I went to my old account - the new bill didn't exist. So I made the fatal mistake again: I called customer service. So - I was basically told I was a liar. The emails I received didn't exist (wow - I didn't know David Blaine worked as Washington Gas) - and if they did exist there could be no explanation. The new account that was created was cancelled the same day. There was no record of my call from 2 weeks prior. Even more scary - they claimed they had a record of me calling the day before. What? When I claimed this to be false they again claimed I was a liar (because, you know, their records are so good). I said I either had amnesia or there was some aspect of fraud going on here. So the saga continues - I've still not received the bill I was promised several weeks ago. Indeed - online I am unable to access any bill from my account (it says they are "being modified"). I keep getting threatening collection notices. It's likely I'll just have to suck it up and pay their bribery fee as I have no other choice or I'll go without heat, hot water, and cooking gas for the winter. Consumer complaints obviously won't get this addressed... there are literally thousands upon thousands of negative reviews online (I've never seen a positive on). As a publicly regulated utility, the only choice is to bring this to the attention of our MD representatives in hopes that they will care (if their pockets aren't already lined with gas money). It's impossible to start service online and I gave up listening to their enraging stream of constant robo-advertisements after the fourth hour on hold when trying to reach a rep. Drove to their offices to start service in person and the receptionist told me to leave. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I would rather spend 5 hours on hold with Horizon Airlines than try to do something simple like 'pay my bill' with these jokers. The website doesn't work. The automated telephone service is archaic, and paying over the phone takes a solid 10 minutes (not to mention they make you enter your credit card info before telling you how much your bill is). Worst service in all ways possible. We had just moved into a new place and were starting new services. They were supposed to come Monday to turn on the gas but didn't tell us we needed to be there yet so we missed them. As others mentioned, we called multiple times all week and couldn't get a hold of them because most phone numbers on their website said the phone service was down. I finally decided to try every phone number on their site and found a random one that worked but kept me on hold for an hour until I could talk to someone. When I told the customer support rep about the phone numbers and service, he laughed and said "yeah we know. you should just save this number because at least you know this one works!" Very unprofessional... They said they'd get another technician to come on Friday morning 7am-12pm. We waited and he never came. I called them again and waited 2 hrs on the phone to talk to someone and they said the technician knocked multiple times and left, which was ridiculous because we were all home and waiting. We rescheduled to Monday morning 7am-12pm and described our door. Later that day, our neighbor came to let us know that Washington Gas has been going to her place twice now and left notices on her door. She's not home during the day so she saw the notices at night and tried calling them to let them know, but never got a hold of anyone. How could they go to the wrong place twice when our house numbers are clearly marked next to the door? We waited at our window all morning on Monday and no one came. We called and waited 3 hours on the phone and then finally got a call from the technician himself who said he was told that he was scheduled to come in the afternoon. The technician seemed to be from a third party source and he was really nice. This is by far the worst experience we've had. Washington Gas is unprofessional, disorganized, and unreliable. We had 1 week with no hot water or gas to cook with and had horrible customer service. What's worse is that we can't even switch. If you have the choice, do not choose Washington Gas. read more

Absolute worst customer service ever!!! They are in the Philippines, barely speak or understand English and clearly read from a script. I received a call/message from one person who spoke such broken English and low that I could not make out their name or phone number. So, I called back and spoke with someone different who clearly did not have the right information about my issue and continued to give me canned responses to very specific questions pertaining to probate issues and transferring the account to a new name. I really hope that Wash Gas reads these reviews because they need to do something about this. Maybe they don't give a sh*t because they have a monopoly anyway but they should. When I call to discuss a death and change over of account, I expected to be treated with compassion and understanding. Instead I get canned responses and answers that don't make any sense. Basically i was told the account was cancelled and would be shut off (like today!) yet online the account is fully set up under the estate name and billing is not interrupted. I am not going to set up a new account when we are clearly paying on the existing account. That sounds like a set up to me!! Their website is outdated and you can never complete the transaction that you need with out an error, so you have to call them. And then you wait. I called today to stop service at a current address and start service at a new address and it took 30 minutes just to stop service. The representative asked me for repetitive information which is annoying because I already have an account! I'm not a new customer so just update my service address and start date. Not that they care.... So gas line needed to be replaced and as a result driveway dug up. When they finished - tar tire tracks and oil stains left on sidewalk and driveway. Emailed to get fixed x2. Nothing. Called and asked for Supervisor @ 1230 one day and as of 5pm the next day - nothing. I called back and was promised a cleaning subcontractor would be here today. Got home- nothing. Called back and asked to speak to supervisor - 40 minutes later I was connected to one. Here is what I was told: Due to gas emergencies in the area the gas crew hasn't made it to the property yet. The order is still open and not to worry until 9pm. Ok - any one try to power wash after dark? The supervisor was sure it would be fixed if not today - then maybe tomorrow. Seriously. Did the crew doing the work not see how screwed up they left the site? Does Washington Gas really want customers to believe that gas technicians will be dispatched as cleaners. I get the sense that their call center is over seas. No issue with that but huge issue with the call center being so disconnected with customer base and common sense. Set answers that make no sense and excuses that you would expect from an eight year old that forgot to do their homework. Water gets shut off tonight so it will be interesting how they clean! I'll bet I get lit up if I am late with a payment. Maybe I will blame it on a gas emergency. I do feel bloated after sitting for 40 minutes on hold! read more

Without question the worst customer service of any utility or customer focused organization that I have ever dealt with. You cannot talk to anyone who makes a decision or schedules people. Having problems with your meter, they tell you to plan to wait all day. Want a meter moved, they contract that out to someone and do not plan to get it ever scheduled. Want to talk to a scheduler for either. They are not available and the customer service line will tell you they are not allowed to talk to them When they came to move the meter, they told me I needed a new line from the meter to the street. This is an expense they need to incur, I have never heard back from them. Without question, the CEO of Washington Gas should be the next CEO of United Airlines, because they would be my all stars for pathetic approaches to customers. read more

Was overcharged and called in to speak with rep and waited on hold and spokee with people who had no idea what they were doing. Then after multiple calls was told to email customer support. 2 weeks later they send back an email which tells me nothing about the overcharge, I then respond right away and another 2 weeks later they tell me we sent you a refund. Only problem the refund was for my initial deposit not the overcharging. Going on 20+ hours of fighting for 100 bucks. Nightmare company but hell who else you going to use. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!! They are impossible to get a hold of. I have waited on hold for an hour/ 45 minutes every day for the past week, with no one answering my call. And, after waiting that long, I often get disconnected from their line with no call back. Does anyone actually work here? read more

I'm trying to start service, and the online system doesn't recognize my address. (There's nothing special or unusual about it.) I've been on hold for a very long time, and there's no hold music, just repeating Public Safety Announcements and advertisements, without end. No callback option, no stated wait time other than "may be longer than 30 minutes." If possible, go with another gas company. read more

Washington Gas is nothing more than a monopoly. I waited 12 hours for someone to come turn on my gas (7am-5pm) and no one showed up. I was even told someone would come up until midnight. After getting excuse after excuse, you are back to another 12 hour day of scheduling an appointment. Residents are at the mercy of a company who is not interested in serving their customers' needs. If the best WG can do is a 12hr window, then they had best get enough contractors to meet the demand. I have filed complaints with DC City Council and other regulatory bodies. read more

I called this morning to set up move my services for 7/15 and was told this was not possible because of a balance left by a prior account holder. If I'm transferring my services from a completely different address , it's quite clear I am not the person who left the account in arrears since my current account has been active for several years. Also, since I am not in DC at this time, I was told to fax in the information but it would take up to 10 business days to activate the account. This is completely unreasonable for a documentation review. What is even more dissatisfying is if I go in person, it will be handled immediately. This is completely inequitable to customers who are unable to travel to downtown DC, pay high parking costs and spend time getting their account turned on. Also, the office hours are completely inconvenient to any working person (only open 8am-4pm). It forces the customer to take time off from work to ensure they will have the utility services they need which is completely unacceptable and is NOT customer centered. My (probably accurate) assumption is the prior customer is still waiting on their old bill to settle the account. The Washington Gas system is so archaic, it can't electronically send the bill to an account that is closed. I know this because the bill for my old unit has to be mailed to the new unit even though I have an online account. This system is set up for the customer to fail, chase old paper bills in electronic centered world and inconvenience everyone but themselves. read more
