Looking in the other direction from DCA's Metro station platform are the high-rent businesses, bureaucracies, and condos in NoVa
Robert G.

One ride with a transfer and and setting foot in three key stations should be enough for a review of Washington D.C.'s Metro system (operated by WMATA in concert with a bus system). I guessed that this rapid rail system was inaugurated after the Bay Area's BART and before Atlanta's MARTA. That was the case, with it being inaugurated in the bicentennial year while BART kicked off in 1972 and MARTA in 1979. Some people are weird about using public transit. If the entire route might be very sketchy, I can see why one might avoid it. However, if transiting between major business and governmental hubs, and especially during daylight hours, I don't understand why someone would not use it. My Washington D.C. Metro trip was on the cheap, augmenting an earlier cheap experience that same day. In coming in from Virginia's Hampton Roads area into the nation's capital on Amtrak, grandiose Union Station is the place one gets off the train. Parts of Union Station are not sufficiently modernized, so struggle some, go the distance, and find the entrance to the Metro station located there. WMATA has single ride and day passes. Like BART and MARTA, cards with magnetic strips are needed to get in and out of your first and last station. The trains are punctual and surprisingly clean. The rolling stock definitely looks like that of the BART or MARTA era, except that the sides are slightly tapered upward, which gives them a sleeker look. Having always gone into the District with a rented car or someone else's, hunting for street parking was what is was all about! But that was a while ago and the District keeps getting busier. While I appreciate the grandeur of D.C., it's not my kind of town. That said, I've seen many photos of Washington's Metro, with most of them focused on the subway station at Union Station. I thought that this was a unique design and looked like it might be of the scale of Atlanta's Peachtree Center station. It is anything but that, being a lot "cozier" in scale, and that same template is used in many of their subway stations. But it's not a bad design, because, in addition to doing its job, manages to look '70s and space age at the same time. In addition to electronic boards telling you which trains are due, a unique feature is the lighting in the pavement that signals when a train is coming in and how to board it. The system's layout looks serpentine. I'm sure there's a logic to that. It might have to do with two rivers merging in this area and streets that are rarely gridded in the larger area. In Atlanta, there are many narrow winding streets; however, they superimposed a cruciform layout for their rapid transit system while, in the D.C. area, they did not. That means more that more familiarization is needed, which would require using it regularly. Most tourists won't get to that level that easily. There are 6 lines, all of which come into D.C., and then continue to service adjacent Virginia and Maryland. One thing that might make it more understandable is that 3 of the lines seem to share a trunk through an important swath of the District. In other cities, the main subway station is often under the main train station. Here, Union Station is but a stop on one line, with Metro Center and L'Enfant Plaza being the most important (transfer) stations. Still, the Metro goes to almost all of the historic landmarks and sites, key governmental buildings, and a number of colleges, one of which - the University of Maryland - is outside the District yet in its service area. Not that I had time, as I was headed to DCA Airport, but I noticed that Metro trains do not go to Georgetown, which might have to do with the topography and many green spaces in the Northwest quadrant of the District. The closest Metro station is at Dupont Circle and, from there, one can take a bus, a taxi, or a rideshare. If not oppressively humid or wintry, the remainder is walkable. I might have given WMATA 3 stars because of the ongoing delays in opening the Silver line to Dulles Airport (IAD), the large international hub airport for the metropolitan area. Much like how Denver's mega airport had teething problems with their then new baggage conveying system, the signaling and control system on newer stations was among the last things to create hiccups and they had to postpone acceptance of the project and opening up the Dulles Airport station, which had been sitting there looking ready to go. With the Silver line now open to IAD and beyond, and the ease of getting the DCA, I'll go with 4 stars. It might be fun to use the system to explore some key sites in D.C. and its surroundings, but that would depend on if and when I'm in that area again.

Full fan of the metro proper. The buses did well for the most part. The one huge exception was the DC Circulator which was absolutely horrendous.

Passengers dangerously crushed hung on platform due to lack of TRAINS!!!

Management needs to be F'ing FIRED!!! Look at this crap! Rush hour at 5: 15 pm they have running 8-10 minutes apart, f'ing hot, and people ready to fight! Ignorant, lack of trending analysis skills, lazy management! Making millions off of passengers and penny pinching services. Unacceptable!!!

The best way to get around D.C., specially if you are visiting the downtown area & national monuments. Price value: The cost of the ticket can't be compared to what it costs to park in the downtown area, besides the accessibility to get around the city. It's a no brainer. Staff & operators: They wear masks, which is highly appreciated. Staff is very helpful. Facilities: It's one of the cleanest metro lines I have ever been to. Some areas/lines are under construction. The machine to get buy a card from was a bit complicated to operate but a staff member was able to assist us right away. And he was nice and helpful. Some trains are brand new, too! Half of the turnstiles in each station don't seem to work, or are missing the card scanner. Safety: Took it during the day and it was fine. Didn't have any issues, or felt it was dangerous at any time. I'll keep taking the metro on my next visit to D.C.!

It appears that Tom Cruise from Days of Thunder is actually driving that bus.

I was thrilled to see that the 7am bus from DuPont Circle was waiting when I arrived at 6:45, and that I was able to board immediately. Not only was there a working electrical outlet, but the WiFi signal was strong and effect. Those were the "best" parts of the expert - it was all downhill from there. I didn't realize there was an additional stop at Union station, and that took quite a while. The driver was very friendly and courteous, but the 15-minute rest stop that turned into 20 minutes made it clear that speed isn't really a priority for this service. We arrived at the stop on West 34th Street and 9th Ave at 12:10pm, and while it was much quicker to park there than it is near Penn station, if I have to walk to Penn station anyway, this isn't much of a plus for me. Probably the most annoying thing about today was that my 5:30pm return trip was cancelled due to technical issues and I had to cut my trip half an hour short(er) to get the 5pm replacement trip instead. I appreciate getting an early notification about the return bus snafu so I was able to adjust my plans accordingly, and I know these things can happen, but if I'm going to be on buses and trains for 12 hours in a day, losing that half hour of planned productivity really isn't great I'll allow that BestBus likely has the best service I've experienced on an Intercity bus in terms of courtesy and communication. And the DuPont Circle is super convenient for me before the metro is running on a Saturday. Beyond that though, this isn't my preferred choice for travel to New York.

Trip from DC to NYC was marred by bad driving. The driver was tailgating cars which resulted in frequent abrupt breaking. This sent people jerking forward and personal belongings flying. Trip from NYC to DC had better driving but no help retrieving luggage which used to be standard customer service. Had to crawl in the storage space under the bus to obtain my luggage. Also, there were no rest stops on either leg of the trip.

At 6 minutes to 2 we finally started boarding. Once on the full bus we quickly noticed the busses AC was not operating at peak. As we got out on the highway it was apparent that the air conditioning wasn't working. We were dying of heat on the bus and with no means to cool off. People were complaining to the bus driver and finally about 2/3 of the way home he pulled off at a rest area to try to make a call to get a replacement bus which was not available. Then we were told that we could get on standby on other than moose buses going through when they came through. By this time we were a good hour overdue and everyone just decided to get back on the bus and deal with it as we all wanted to get home. I also noticed the same problem on my trip up to New York but not as bad as the trip home and I expected more riding the luxury version of the bus that actually has less people on it. Shame on vamus for cooking its customers in their buses. I highly recommend anyone reading this to avoid using Vamoose in the summer as their buses aren't equipped properly with air conditioning. And to make matters worse there's no customer service number for the Moose when you call them and you have a complaint they direct you to making your complaint online and not with an operator, and of course there's been no response to my complaint.

Thank you Charles (driver), Jacob (owner) and David (dispatch/coordinator). From the initial on-line contact to get a price quote there was a response from Jacob by email within thirty minutes requesting more detail about pick up/drop off locations, time and number of passengers. The communication was excellent (from beginning to end) and the responsiveness was very impressive. Our superb driver Charles arrived about an hour early (which was great as many of the 14 adults using the Sprinter Van transportation had already arrived). The driver was caring, responsive, generous and had the Sprinter Van A/C cranked up and the van spotless inside and out. The driver's kindness and driving skills was remarkable in all of the passenger's opinion. He went out of his way to accommodate us. Our HS children used another transportation service (booked prior to the adults deciding to use transportation as well). There service was horrible. He was thirty minutes late for pick up, the Party Bus had no air conditioning (it was 90 some degrees for the one hour ride), had no working speakers, driver smelled of marijuana, drove erratically and did little to in regards to service. When we heard about this we terminated their service after the 1 hour of the 6 hours booked for the evening. Our driver Charles of Shalom Transportation, upon our request, took immediate action by contacting Jacob who was polite and generous and provided us with an impromptu remedy by providing our children with alternative transportation on the spot and the report from our HS children was that the service and transportation vehicle was excellent. David, Shalom's dispatcher, immediately stepped in to action (thank you) and provided immediate communication by text and our adjusted bill by email. We were pleased with Shalom Transportation LLC's communication, service and price and would use them again. I wrote the review on the bus using my own cellular data. I checked multiple times for a Free Wifi network and nothing appeared for me to select. #2 The pictures on the Yelp page are misleading at best. Out of 31 pictures 9 of them are the "LUX" bus you are referring to and TWO of the pictures are the standard bus that I was on. #3 What other riders rated is not my concern, I rated the experience I had using your transportation in real time. It was not pleasant, the seats are small, it took 6 hours to get to NY (traffic or not), there was no WIFI. Those reasons alone are enough for me not to use this service again. There are other riders who experienced exactly what I have listed in this review. I hope that through my review you can check your fleet and ensure WIFI works on every bus. UPDATE: No free WiFi. The bus picture on Yelp IS NOT the bus you ride on. AND they are not timely! This is my first time on the Washington Deluxe. I had high hopes as my boyfriend recommended this service over other buses. The bus itself is very cramped, and I did not see anyone being offered water. Despite that, I thought everything would be fine as it's a 4 hour ride. The bus was due to leave at 3p and we left maybe 10 mins after 3. But somehow by 7pm we JUST made it into Delaware (we were supposed to be in NY by 7:15). Whatever scenic route this driver took added 2 hours to a 4 hour trip!!! We literally went through every stoplight and neighborhood in MD which caused such a drastic delay. Why we could not take a main route is beyond me because we left long before traffic really hit. So as I'm writing this I have now been on this bus for 5 full hours. We mostly likely have another hour before we arrive at the stop. Just take Megabus or Greyhound. Do not let the pictures online or the "deluxe" in the name persuade you. At this point, I'd even take the Eastern bus!

However, after my recent trip on a Tripper Elite bus I'd highly consider using this company again. What I liked: the biggest plus, which accounts for the higher price of your ticket for this bus, is that one row of seats as two across the aisle, and the other row is of single seats. Since I was traveling by myself, it was a complete joy to sit alone and not have to fumble with a random seatmate's power cord or backpack on the floor. The seats are pretty plush and all have power outlets. They also give you a bottle of water when you get on board. The bus was also quite clean. The pickup stop in Arlington is on a quiet street tucked into Roslyn. It's Metro accessible or very easy to get dropped at via car. Dropping off is at Penn Station in midtown Manhattan. Fysa: we stopped in Maryland to switch bus drivers. I don't know if this is standard. We also made a 10-minute stop at the Delaware Welcome Center. I appreciated this, because it was nice to use the bathroom and grab a snack. But if you're in a super hurry to get to New York, it's something to consider for adding in time. My dislikes: the Wi-Fi wasn't working, even after the bus driver tried to reset it. That was a bummer since Wi-Fi is advertised as a perk of the bus.
