As if Amtrak could get worse.... I called to book another ride on my "unlimited" rail pass. After 28 minutes on the phone the reservationist said that it's NOT actually good for 120 days, but for 30 days after your first trip! How can that work logistically unless you take a 5-segment ride across country and back? This rail pass was the worst travel experience ever and I've been stranded overnight by Spirit Airlines! It was fast efficient and easy to navigate Trains run on time and tickets are best purchased in advance. Download the Amtrak amp for easy access to delays, ticket QR code and general information on services. My ride was in excess of 3 hours. My only complaint would be the seats are not as comfortable as I would like. The other caution is that some cars are connected to the portable potties. Amtrak could be great, in theory. It's a convenient, low-friction way to travel, especially for those of us along the Northeast Corridor route. In practice, however, service has been abysmal recently. Frequent delays with zero communication or explanation. Prioritizing Acela trains that somehow manage to run on time while the "regular" trains are always behind schedule. Even when you're boarding at the first stop on a route, you aren't safe. Amtrak needs to apologize to its riders for making its service so unreliable, removing any incentive to use this form of travel. I'll be prioritizing transportation alternatives for the foreseeable future, at least until they can get their act together. read more

What went well? The hidden secret behind this Amtrak station is the red cap service. Being dropped off with three giant bags and several hand carries was a handicap and having to travel through this busy train station. As we walked by the red cap booth, we inquired about the cost and found out that it was complementary. A nice tip was appreciated. Very friendly red cap employee piled our bags and took us through a shortcut to allow us to board the train first. He even carried our bags onto the train. This is a review about the experience of buying Amtrak tickets online through the company's app. Amtrak has now made it impossible to book tickets through their website - I just tried but it's so buggy I had to give up. Instead you have to download the app which turned out to have some built in tricky features. Notably the trip insurance. Regardless of whether you checked the box to indicate you don't need it, it'll still be added to the final charges. The way charges are displayed you may not notice the final charge being different and pay it. Then realizing too late that you have a separate charge from "AGA Service company", which supposedly should send you a policy since you were charged for it. However the policy doesn't come at the same time as the e-ticketes but much later. So again it's something you might not notice or realize right away. This just doesn't seem to be an honest way to get their customers to buy insurance, and is something I never encountered before when buying tickets on their website. So if you are booking tickets on the Amtrak app, just beware of this practice and in case you find you've inadvertently paid for the policy be sure to cancel it directly with AGA within 15 days. read more

It had been 20 years since I last rode an Amtrak train, and this was my very first trip on the Acela--to Baltimore on Saturday, 6/4, for a baseball game. I was running extremely late but managed to arrive just in time, rushing through the station and onto the platform. That's when I met Anthony, the conductor. He calmly told me to slow down, catch my breath, and assured me I still had time. He then directed me to the correct car for my seat. His professionalism and courtesy were exactly what I needed in that high-adrenaline moment, and I truly appreciated it. Thank you, Anthony! This is a long time coming. It's going to be a long one because I have been on several Amtrak routes and I'm going to try and sum them all up here. I will list the route and class of service so you have context. But it is important to note that after EVERY SINGLE TRIP, except the Wolverine, I swore I would never ride the train again. Feel free to scroll forward if you're looking for a particular route. I review here: Wolverine, Empire Builder, Lakeshore Limited, California Zephyr, Coast Starlight, and the Texas Eagle from Chicago to St. Louis. I have also been in all classes of service except First since that's only available on Acela routes. I wanted to love Amtrak. My dad, who is 89, would tell me stories about riding the train, particularly his first trip when he was headed to go to basic training for the Army. It was his first time away from home and his first trip on the train. And, even though he was a young black man-boy riding the train in the segregated and racist 50s, I wish I could share with you his stories about his magnificent and an elegant experience. I did not have a magnificent or elegant experience. AT. ALL. CLASS OF SERVICE REVIEWS (COS) Coach: I only rode coach once back in 2014 so I'm not sure of how that may have changed in the last decade or how it may differ on other trains. Pay the extra to go business class. It's worth it on the Wolverine. Business: Business class on the Wolverine was a world of difference. The seats are SUPER comfy and you might be lucky enough to get a seat on the side with only single seats. You have WiFi, power at your seat, reclining chairs that you can almost lay flat in (I don't find this to be comfy and I think it's rude so I just recline a teeny bit), a footrest, and you are just steps away from the cafe car. Free soft drinks, coffee, tea, and water. Superliner Bedroom: It's a good size for one person for sure. Two people maybe if they really like each other and they're small people. The bathroom is a tiny toilet/shower combo. I'm very hippy so I was squished. If you're on the heavier side you will probably be more comfortable going to the common bathroom which gives you much more room to sit. The rooms were really worn and dated and were in EXTREME need of an EXTREMELY deep cleaning and a remodel. Frankly, they were raggedy. The cushions on all of the seats except the Wolverine were not much cushion at all and I have a big booty with plenty of built in cushioning! Superliner Roomette: This one was my overall favorite for a solo trip. Perfect size for me and my stuff. It MIGHT be ok for two people if they're small and the trip is short but I probably wouldnt do it. ROUTE REVIEWS 1. WOLVERINE & TEXAS EAGLE (?) - Detroit to Chicago to St Louis in Coach. The only thing I remember about this trip a decade ago was that there was a 3 hour delay on the Wolverine because of a tree covering the tracks. The trip to St. Louis must have been on a Superliner because I remember sitting upstairs and being VERY comfortable with a lot of space. The downfall? The train was delayed for almost two hours going over the bridge to Missouri because of freight traffic. I could SEE the arch. I was tired, having been up at 4:30am to catch a 6am train out of Detroit, and swore I would never do it again. 2. WOLVERINE - Detroit to Chicago - multiple trips in both directions in Business Class. Same very groovy experience in all except for the cafe which is just meh. This is the one train and COS I continue to take again and again. 3. EMPIRE BUILDER - Chicago to Seattle. Superliner Bedroom. After the Wolverine, this was the best experience, primarily due to the attendant. My Car Attendant was OC and he was AMAZING. He took care of me like I was his daughter! Because of COVID, the dining car was closed and they were serving sleeping car passengers via the Flexible Dining menu. It wasnt horrible but was not particularly great. Think a step up from a TV dinner. During COVID, you could have it in your room or in the dining car. OC brought most of my meals to me except breakfast which I preferred to have in the dining car. The views were really nice! Would recommend but in a roomette. 4. CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR - Chicago to Emeryville, CA. Superliner Bedroom. Similar experience to the Empire Builder but without OC's amazing service. MUCH better views though. Would recommend but in a roomette. 5. COAST STARLIGHT - Emeryville, CA to Los Angeles. Superliner Roomette. What I loved most about this trip was the roomette. It would be my preferred class of service for Amtrak hands down. The dining experience was the same as trips 3-4. The views were OK but not at all what Amtrak raved about on the website. But I also lived in Cali for 4 years so maybe that is why I wasnt so impressed. 6. LAKESHORE LIMITED - Round trip Chicago to NYC. Viewliner Bedroom. Similar onboard experience to 3 & 4. Views were meh. Would not recommend. read more

Drop off was very neat wonderful atmosphere on the inside. A lot of signage with where to go however, you need to keep an eye on the track assignments. They could change at any moment with a tick. Some of the lines are very tight and can get intermingled could be better, organized restrooms are really clean. The staff is extremely helpful. The RedCap team in Union Station has shown and continues to show exceptional assistance for all of us who are disabled. I travel to NYC from Maryland bi-weekly for the past 6 months. I am always in need of RedCap service. Walking the long track after disembarking from the train is difficult for me. I always receive concern assistance when I arrive. This review concerns DC - BWI Airport. The Amtrak train from DC to BWI Airport is $5-25, depending upon the time, ect. Comfortable ride, organized and on time. I decided to fly out of BWI Airport rather than Dulles and saved quite a bit on my airline ticket. So I took metro to Union Station, purchased my Amtrack ticket same day at the counter for $12 (returning was $5), took Amtrack to BWI (about 30 mins or so), followed by the free shuttle to the airport (15 mins). It works if you need to save a pinch on airline tickets and if you're familiar with public transportation. It's a great economically friendly alternative. Amtrack is comfortable and fast. The attendant was friendly and told me when to get ready for my stop. She even watched me to make sure I was walking in the right direction after exiting the train. She was awesome. There's a lot of hustle and bustle on Amtrak. People are traveling up and down the East Coast everyday. Pretty cool. Amtrak makes it easy to get to BWI, Philadelphia, NYC, etc. read more

Union Station is a fairly convenient spot for transiting Washington DC via Amtrak or Metro. I love being able to hop on a train and easily travel the Northeast Corridor, which seems like the most popular route here. There is also an area for car/taxi/bus drop off and pickup. That being said, the station is not currently in its heyday. Yes, the interior is still beautiful. Yes, businesses are starting to return since the pandemic drawdowns. But Union Station feels both too small and too big for what it does. The waiting areas for passengers are small, so lines snake around the building. The building feels pretty safe during busy hours, but you should also keep your guard up. I'm looking forward to further revitalization of Union Station. I expect that many good things are to come here! read more

If you have never experienced riding a train, you need to. We took the train from DC to NYC. It was the BEST!! Price: price depends on seats and businesses, but I was able to get tickets for 6 people for $220!! That's a steal! We decided to take the train, because 1) I did not want to drive for hours with a toddler in a car. 2) I did not want to deal with New York traffic and the hassle for parking. Train station: In case you don't know, there is no TSA line. You just go wait by your train number until it's time to board. We were able to get breakfast at the train station and coffee. Union Station in DC is humungous. You should probably just check it out if you have never been there. Anyway, we boarded, and we were able to choose our seats. It is first come, first serve. The seats were like sitting on first class/business class! They were wide and comfy! Here are our top reasons why we are now avid train riders (in no partcular order) 1. You can just relax and nap instead of driving. 2. You can actually have a sit-down meal onto he train. 3. There is wifi 4. THE VIEWS!! Omg, the views are breathtaking. 5. The trains can go all around the States. Our kids have now deemed that riding the train is their FAVORITE way to travel. That says a LOT! We love taking the Amtrak now, and it is just a lot more stress free than flights. read more

First time on a long-distance Amtrak ride, from Chicago to NYC, when my flight was canceled. This was on regular coach seats; roomettes were sold out. The trip was quite reasonable: it got the job done and the comfort level was better than expected, despite a full train. Most passengers were considerate (except for one family that played a TV show loudly on a cellphone; an annoyance that reflected more poorly on them than bothered people sitting more than two rows away). I also liked it that my car at least had a faucet for dispensing drinking water, and a good supply of cups. On a long trip, staying hydrated is important. (I am not sure if all cars had water dispensers though.) My only complaint is the bathrooms -- they got increasingly dirty over the trip. Towards the last quarter of the trip, one of the bathrooms became unusable because it looked like someone peed on the floor. I don't think he (or they, if it was cumulative) did it on purpose; the toilets are very small, and on a rolling train, it's easy to miss. Fortunately they were other bathrooms that remained, not clean, but at least usable (for gents). Oh, even though the ride is called "Lakeview", you only saw a lake (Lake Erie) for about 1 minute. The rest of the trip was land on both sides, except for crossing rivers. No big deal; most of trip was night anyway. read more

When on the east coast, it is easy and relatively cheap to use Amtrak, and less of a hassle than flying (no taking off your shoes and unloading half of the neatly organized contents of your bag into a bin, and you can bring water and more than 100mL of toothpaste on the train!).  I travelled on Amtrak between DC, New York, and Philadelphia (with a slight detour to Delaware) in 2016, on and on my recent trip in June 2022, I travelled between DC, Baltimore, and New York on Amtrak.  The trip from DC to Baltimore was about half an hour and cost $11 per person (excluding currency conversion, that is cheaper than someone commuting between Vancouver and Surrey both ways during peak hours), and the trip between Baltimore and New York was $137 per person. Because the trip from Baltimore to New York was about three hours, we wanted to be comfortable so we chose the "quiet" car, which means loud, obnoxious jerks can't act like loud, obnoxious jerks.  However, there was a loud, obnoxious jerk sitting in front of us having a very loud and obnoxious phone conversation in French.  Annoyed, we told an employee and the employee told the loud, obnoxious jerk to STFU.  The loud, obnoxious jerk did STFU for about all of ten seconds and then went back to being a loud, obnoxious jerk once the employee left. Once again we got the employee to tell the loud, obnoxious jerk to STFU, but he went back to being a loud, obnoxious jerk once the employee left.  So for a third time we got the employee, and the employee, thoroughly annoyed, as was everyone else on the train, firmly told the loud, obnoxious jerk that if he did not STFU up and stay quiet, he would be kicked off at the next stop.  There was no language barrier - the loud, obnoxious jerk understood perfectly well that he was to STFU the first time the employee spoke to him, but he tried to pretend that he did not understand why he could not yell at full volume into his phone for hours on the quiet car.  Fortunately he stayed quiet this time, but part of me was hoping to see him kicked off.  I'm bumping my rating up to four stars because of the awesome employee.  [Yelp collections: East Coast 2016; East Coast 2022; Planes, Trains, and Automobiles] read more

Did Round Trip. Starting in NC and going to VA - trip there was good and nice - good customer service train #80. All around attempted to accommodate our group sitting simi together. On the way home we took train #89 - female lady greeting the train - gave us a assigned seat and was VERY rude - just to get back on the train to go to sleep and the man scanning tickets acted like it was an issue we were separated (NOT by choice) and we had one group ticket. I love Amtrak. The desks are in the middle of the main level. I joined the free member program and booked my ticket online in advance. I paid $15 each way, much cheaper than gas. I showed my reservation number & the agent printed out a ticket. The agents were helpful and nice. A rude customer made a commotion when he thought he wasn't being assisted quick enough. He was yelling and telling everyone to shut up. A manager politely escorted the customer to a back office since the customer was screaming he wanted to make a complaint. I was rattled just from watching. The employee kept his cool. The boarding area is near McDonalds. The schedule is posted on several monitors and boarding calls are announced for the current departing train. My experience has been that boarding is posted at the last minute (about 20 min before leaving). Coach class was comfy for four hours. If my journey had been longer, I would have wanted and a different scenario. The seats were clean and comfortable. If you want to charge your phone, you need a plug and cord. There aren't any usb ports (at least not in coach). Your luggage needs to fit above your seat or under it. The cars were roomy and nice. The restroom was large and clean. When you reach your stop, pay attention to which cars allow an exit. I walked through a few cars to exit near the meal car. The Amtrak staff were helpful and proactive. I had help with my bags getting on/off without asking. When I returned to union station, I rode on a golf cart to the exit. It was fun. I brought snacks and didn't use the meal car. Others purchased items from the meal car: drinks and pub food (sandwiches and fries). The ride was enjoyable, in spite of a 20 minute stop out out precaution for the weather. I take Amtrak from DC to Boston South Station several times a year. Last year, I learned about the Red Cap service which has made my travels MUCH easier. Today I want to publicly commend Red Cap Cedric Barnes of Union Station, Washington DC. Train 86 was repeatedly rescheduled. Mr. Barnes seated me in the waiting area for those using the Red Cap service. Despite my frequently falling asleep and then wandering of to get food or use the rest room, he chased me down and got me on my train on time. My family had its first reunion in twenty years the next day and I probably would have missed my train and that celebration had he not taken such good care of me. read more

I'm a fan of Amtrak! It's quicker and more reliable than a bus and just as affordable when you book in advance. I also enjoy the amenities available - charging plugs and Wifi. I've travelled from DC to Philly and New York and have no complaints about the trips. The train left on time (so make sure you arrive early... Amtrak waits for no one!). The station is centrally located inside Union Station. The boarding gate information was posted at the stated time and the boarding lines (general and priority) were well-managed to expedite the process and ensure everyone boarded the correct train. Luggage loading is pretty much self-serve, so be ready to hoist any large suitcases above your head if you brought them. We sat in coach class and the train was clean. The staff did regular runs through the aisles to collect trash. There's also a cafe car to grab some sustenance or you can bring your own. All of the staff that we interacted with were friendly. The conductor also clearly announced each stop so there's no confusion about where you are. I had initially purchased a round-trip ticket, but there was a service disruption and they cancelled the train early in advance (1-2 months out). Customer service assisted me with modifying the reservation and itinerary, so I was able to make different return travel arrangements. Amtrak is where it's at! read more

My bf and I were really excited to be traveling by train as our first time and big move from Seattle to Chicago. There were an account of MULTIPLE negative events that have led me to write this review. Ps the only reason we chose this way over flight, which is cheaper is because they allow more luggage. This is my 1st & only time riding on an Amtrak train, hopefully they listen to their reviewers a little more so they stop losing them. 1. We called to change our boarding station from Seattle to Edmonds, not only did they fail to inform of us arriving 30 mins prior for luggage check in but we ended up not being able to board because of it! Not to mention the insurance we bought recommended by Amtrak from a 3rd party refused to cover us due to a technicality. We ended up buying brand new tickets for the next day. (There goes our money). Mind you we arrived at a reasonable time, 5:08 for a 5:27 departure. 2) The worst part of Amtrak are the staff they are awful! They don't care about customer service at all. They have a stinky attitude every time you try talking to any of the black ladies that work here. If you ask them to repeat themselves they yell @ you & anything you say at them is a huge bother. These are the kind of employees that hate their life, & should be fired. Nothing justifies being rude to a customer that has done nothing to you & is simply asking a question. 3. I am the kind of person to say please/thank you for everything. This is the 1st time I felt the need to go against that because how can I thank someone that degraded me and served me horribly? The black lady that was working the cafe told me to go back in line when I was close to look at the menu even though I am 110 petite and hardly take up any space, ok I respected only 2 people can order at a time. I went back. Once 1 of the customer's left she yelled at me to "get off my phone and pay attention!" Because she had to go on a her lunch break. Excuse me?? You're serving me. I swear if this wasn't the only food option @ this time I would walk away. Tip? Absolutely NO THANK YOU. I don't understand how a worker can wrap it in their head to speak to customers in this way. They act like they are the owner of the goddamn train or like theyre doing you a favor! We arent a charity cause we are paying for our food!!! Homeless people getting served at a charity home probably get treated better. Shame on them! But don't worry, it doesn't stop there, that's because they weren't just rude to me but to everyone. At the dining side of the train where you pay $25-50/person for a full course meal, a man walked inside thinking he can order a cocktail. Instead of the worker explaining to him how the service works, bc it was clearly his first time, she says "you can't sit here!" Answers all of his questions with attitude & doesn't explain the service whatsoever. I get this job can be tiring but why take out your frustration on the customers?! That's not going to make your job any better, hate to break it to ya. Note: my bf later spoke with her & said her name 3x & she went from witchy attitude to nice & offered him a perk. We always treat ppl with respect & kindness but even to someone who is only respectful, the workers should be held to the standard of being respectful back, a customer shouldn't have to sweet talk and employee so they can be nice to them! This is such a cool way to vacation travel!! We purchased a roomette and we were given access to the Amtrak lounge. We were greeted by Ms Loretta at the lounge station and she was so cheerful, kind, and personable! I was so impressed by the awesome accommodations in the lounge! Snacks, hot and cold beverages, clean restrooms, lots of comfortable lounge seats and tables, and electric plugs. I almost wish that I had came sooner to just hang out in the space! Ms Loretta came and got us when we were to load up. The Amtrak staff let know where to go catch our train. The roomette is so cool! It's like a micro apartment!!! I'm so in awe of all the smart ways that it is organized!! A private compartment with a private sink and toilet, 2 chairs, 2 bunks, space for luggage, and a table for eating or working. Electric plugs and your own thermostat and fan!!! And a door and curtains!!! So much more I'm sure. On the train we had Ms Sharon that said she was taking care of us the whole trip. She was very nice, professional, and friendly! She gave us a lot of information about the cabin, the train layout, the lounge, public restroom, dining cart, etc. We get supper and breakfast with the roomette! Unlimited bottled waters! Ms Sharon promised that the Chef is amazing!!! I am going to try to absorb all the wonders on this trip!! My hubby is spoiling me!!! That's a lot of Love!!! read more

We were suppose to leave Lorton on the auto train yesterday at 4:00pm but did not leave the station until 1:45am this morning. that is almost a 10 hour delay. As if that's not bad enough we now have a delayed lunch. There are 3 designated groups for lunch. Group 1 was called late at 12:30. It is now 2:33 and the 2nd group has not been called to the dining car. Once they are done group 3 will be called which will easily be 4:00 or later. This is the worst travel experience I have ever experienced. Amtrak makes the airlines look good and that is a very, very low bar. And to think my husband and I paid over $3700.00 to be treated this poorly. I will never, ever ride an Amtrak train again. Horrible way to start my vacation!!!! read more

Honestly, Amtrak is the way to go. Airports are a hassle with little room and with great uncertainty. I have taken the Amtrak to New York, Baltimore, D.C and Roanoke VA in the last 2 months and every experience exceeded expectations along with reasonable prices. read more

They told me they were putting me off the train at the next stop with no way to get another train in either direction till the next day. As briefly as possible, this is what happened. Let me start by saying that, while I raised my voice, at no time did i yell or use bad language. Train #79, The Carolinian from Balti. to Raleigh N.C. on Sat Dec. 28. I'm sitting in the front of the car, behind the disabled seats, which were not occupied. A young woman, I guess in early 20"s sits down in the disabled section which is an additional charge and noted on your ticket. Female ticket taker, with no name ID asks for her ticket. "Get up, lets go you don't have a ticket for this seat" in a brusque and I mean brusque voice. "I'm sure I that is what I purchased" the young girl quietly replied. "I have the Amtrak app let me check" Oh I'm so sorry, I'm having trouble can you help me" in a soft voice.? "I don't help with apps especially with adults now get your bag and follow me" as she turned and walked away while the young lady was trying to get her bag and mumbling "It hurts for me to walk in a soft voice with pain and distress showing on her face. Now the meat of it, ten minutes the same ticket take comes back thru the car. I said to her Were you able to accommodate that young lady? That's none of your business she replied. I thought you could have been more nicer when you talked to her. What is your name? You need to not worry about what it, she replied. I said I'd like to speak to the conductor. She turned her back leaned over the people seated opposite me and said, loud enough so that I could hear, "I don't have to put up with that racist" (Should tell you now she is black, passenger she is addressing is black, I'm white.) I raised my voice in reply, "Don't play the race card with me" and again told her I wanted to see the concuctor. Five minutes later a younger black woman comes back and identifies herself as the Assistant Conductor" and do I have a problem? As I start to speak she literally turns her back and takes a couple of steps away. I said i would like you to turn around and listen to what I have to say. I then said I would like to speak with the conductor. Ten minutes later the first ticket taker says the Conductor wants to see you. I go up three cars and see him. Before I can say a word he says "I'm putting you off at the next stop, Quantico". i said why? His reply I will not allow abuse of my crew" I said can I tell you my side. "No your getting off at the next stop" So as I set and talked with my friendly seatmate, about twenty minutes later I was again told to see the conductor, not at the Quantico stop but all the way down to Richmond, Va. As I reached the conductor he said he was not going to put me off unless I interfered with his crew again. I started to say something, bit my lip and said thank you and got off at my destination in Raleigh. ( Why they didn't put me off I don't know but I think they were behind schedule and didn't want to take the time to get my baggage (which was loaded in Baltimore) and that would have taken too much time). Otherwise, the baggage agent in Raleigh was very friendly and helpful in getting my baggage, as the Balto. agent did not give me my claim stub. The scenery on the route is not interesting but the seat was comfortable and I would have liked to read that book I brought with me. Will i take the train again? Yes. Will I speak up for someone is being abused? I don't know. read more
