I live out of state specifically across the country and received a ticket in Washington state because I was going 76 and 60 when everybody else was doing the exact same thing and I'm the only one who just stopped. Zero stars if I could. This state patrol and my local police department have just been after me in speeding tickets. 2-3 miles is what they catch me going over but don't pull over the people flying by me in the left lane. Worst part is is Abigail Johnson the state patrol officer was in front of me and I was following my 500 feet from behind pacing her and she still pulled me over when she sets the speed for traffic? That's called entrapment. These cops are scums and deserve to rot ‍ change my mind pigs. Side note. I got shot out when I first moved to this town months ago multiple bullet holes all over my truck. Then it happened again taking my coworker home they called the cops and y'all said you're too full of traffic violations to come check on us. They still have yet to do anything about it but pull me over and ticket me going 2 miles over the speed limit. I have been trying to schedule a VIN inspection for the last 3 weeks. I get up at 6am every Tuesday and have logged into the website every 30 mins on Tuesdays to book an appointment for a vehicle I purchased at a junk yard so I can get it in to get it inspected but there has been 0 appointments available for weeks. There needs to be a better system in place as I can not get an appointment. The website says they load new appointments at 11am but that is not true. Please fix your system and make it easier for people to get an inspection! read more

How many times have they gotten me for speeding? Man, must be at least half a dozen in the time I have been driving. And, no, I am not a fast driver. I have always driven trucks, and never driven trucks near the high end of the engine spectrum. I generally stay out of everybody's way on freeways, and still these guys find time to nab me. Can you really say they're not doing their jobs? No. Each and every time, I was speeding. And all these guys enforce is traffic laws--that's why city and county cops always say you shouldn't confuse WSP with real law enforcement. So why review them? Well, I have had plenty of on-duty (as well as off-duty) interactions with officers from other agencies as well. Sometimes casual conversation, sometimes hiring them for crowd control, sometimes visiting friends and family who work in the business, sometimes, yeah, getting pulled over. And guess what? WSP consistently seems to have a knack for hiring the least pleasant people in the industry. They pop for going ten over, and the exasperation and condescension reminds you of a princess-y teenager who wants her babysitting shift to consist of nothing more than talking on the phone to her friends--so, when she actually has to interact with the kids, she harps on them. It's a bit of a mystery why someone who gets so hysterically annoyed by speeders would want a job with the WSP. That must be a really, really bad recipe for job satisfaction. read more

Thank you to the two officers who stopped to see what my trouble was. I was on the 522 @ 5:30 p.m.on monday 7/16/2018. Was sleepy and worn out from working in the heat that day, was falling asleep at the wheel. Pulled over to sleep as much as I could. I drive a DeLorean her plate name is Lyrics,( many of you know her! ) Two officers, one a State Hwy and one (I think a Sheriff ) stopped to check to see that I was o.k. and made sure I was before I got back under way. I dont think cops should be allowed to tailgate someone, and proceed to tailgate when said person moves to get out of whoever is tailgatings way. Especially when it is dark out and you cannot see who or what, is behind you besides headlights. That is how accidents happen. What if i had to slam on my brakes for who knows what and Officer Anthony Califano badge #332 rear ended me? Someone who was just sworn onto the force august of 2016 should be a bit smarter. I was just involved in a road rage incident for not letting someone pass on an offramp where there was only one lane and the guy busted all my mother in laws windows out of her car and then tried to stab me and my dog. I am unsatisfied, along with many other people, about the absence of traffic enforcement in this state, particularly along State Route 99, a.k.a. Aurora Ave., and also State Route 522, a.k.a. Lake City way, in addition to State Route 523, a.k.a. NW to NE 143rd Street. Drivers are just doing what they want to, going fifteen or twenty or even thirty miles an hour over the limit, like the arterials are all gosh-darn freeways, and I'm tired of being tailgated at 35 or 40 MPH in a 30 zone. I'm sick of it. I have a dashcam now, if any of the road ragers or reckless drivers out there want to prove how stupid and inept they really are at handling a motor vehicle, as well as their own emotions, I place more blame on the State Patrol for not having at least one cruiser or unmarked units along the routes I cited to catch those drivers getting away with flagrant speeding, failing to yield to cross traffic, failing to yield to oncoming traffic, unsafe lane changes, improper stops and red light running, among other things. YES, I am an expert on traffic control, and I did write three books about driving, and it's clear to me that people are just unwilling to change unless they get hit in their wallets or checking account, so I'm calling the state out on this one, particularly the ADAT unit, whom I have not seen in ages. It is clear to me that the Washington State Patrol talks a lot, but they don't actually DO anything when it comes to getting unsafe, negligent and reckless drivers off the road. "Aurora Ave. Traffic Safety Program", the sign says on the southbound side past the Woodland Park Zoo. HA! That's a laugh. And that's where I've got video proof of jerks going sixty in a 40 MPH zone, zig-zagging through traffic like there's no one one the roads but them. And I KNOW the Seattle Police Department doesn't give a whit about traffic enforcement, either, along these problem areas, where if they positioned their cars along certain stretches they could catch speeders and negligent drivers like flies on a rib roast. You people have GOT to do better out there, because I'm tired of the way some people drive out there and get away with it. What do you do with your time, anyway, state patrol? I believe the WSP is a two edge sword, a nessicary evil in our state. For the most part I'm not a member of the speeders club so I don't have anything negative to say on that part. If I am a speeder I'll fess up and pay the ticket or take it to court depending on the ticket. but, thats not why I'm writing this review I was on my way to get back on the freeway at I-5 Federal way HOV lane off ramp using the round about. As I was coming back around to go northbound on the free way the WSP trooper then pulled me over and proceeded to give my a ticket for having a window tint violation. My tint is not even THAT bad .2 over the legal limit. I took the ticket to court, judge told me i have 60 days to take off the tint and he would reduce my fine to 86 dollars. the state min. limit for tinted window violations... :/ So, I pay 45 dollars to have a tint removed from my windows then pay 86 dollars for the ticket...oh and the ticket is only 126 dollars... not cool wsp not cool. read more

The few run ins I've had with WSP have been pleasant enough. I was pulled over on my way home one night after work and was speeding about 20 over. I admitted I was just wanting to be home after a long day. The patrolman noticed my WSU sweat shirt and asked what year I graduated I told him I was class of 92. He said he was 93 and told me just to slow down and have a nice night. Go Cougs! One thing that gets me though is less focus on HOV violations. I drive 405 frequently and see countless blantant violations just to avoid traffic. It use to be you could find WSP patrolmen on motorcycles in the shoulder waiting for violators during morning commutes, but now I never see them. Maybe it's due to budget cutbacks with the state being in debt and all, but it'd sure be nice to see them out there again. If I have to be in traffic like everyone else then so should the rest of the single drivers. Just sayin. read more

could use much more improvement i believe, that mental health training is a must. Money should be better spent on training and understanding and the people that should be incharge of these trainings are people trained in mental health i also think they should have mental health peers also being apart of the training as so the officers can understand more about complex ptsd in adult children of the foster care system and military or police for or even victoms of natral desaster i think there should always be a female and a male on patrol stationed together if they claim being a victom they need proff regaurdless of where the say they were hurt i also believe they should be able to access mental health services without stigma on there own but if they have they do something wrong they should still have concequences and if murder or hurt some one theres still a full investegation and they are treated the same as the person that is also being questioned for a fair trial guilty tell proven guilty and i believe they should have to ware a body cam at all times it have voice i think cops in general need better medical and better retirement pay. read more

Unfortunately this is yet another stellar review for WSP officer Norman Larsen. While traveling to Whidbey Island on vacation with my family in the Fort Casey area ( hwy 20 S. Engle dr) I was pulled over for speeding. The posted speed is at 45 and makes a sharp turn to Fort Casey and the speed limit drops to 25 (Where Officer Larsen was parked). I was under the assumption that I was being pulled over for anything other then speeding as my approach to Fort Casey was at a crawl because I did not want to miss my approach. After respectfully explaining to Officer Larsen that I did not believe that I was speeding, I received a $195.00 citation. Best case scenario is that this Officer Larsen lays in wake in what is clearly a speed trap for unsuspecting tourists, who are watching for signs of Fort Casey on the left and most likely miss the small and abrupt 20 mile an hour change in speed limit on the right. Worse case scenario is that this officer is throwing out questionable citations and seeing which ones will stick, i.e. go unchallenged. Based on previous posts here and around the web regarding this officer, there is certainly a question of ethic. I am challenging this citation and will seek to be granted proof of my speed, if I can get it. Suggested Reading:. I'm an out of state visitor driving a rental car with Nevada licensee plates on highway 2o on Whidbey Island. I have traveled to Washington 6 times over last few years and the Island 4 times. Nice place to visit until I was stopped for speeding on highway 20 approaching Deception Pass where the speed limit changes from 50 miles an hour to 40. I was in a long string of cars and everyone was slowing as required by the change in the limit. I saw the the State Police car turn on his lights and make a u-turn to pull in behind me. I couldn't believe he was after me and when I looked at my speedometer it indicated 42 MPH, my wife also looked and confirmed I was not doing 50. The officer, Norman Larsen badge number 889 pulled me over and sited me for going 10 mph over the posted limit. I was courteous in challenging his assertion that I was speeding to no avail. Larsen proceeded to his car and wrote the ticket for 124$. So if I was speeding Larsen could have sited anyone in line as we were all going the same speed. I feel I was singled out because of the out of state licenses plates on the car. It would be nearly impossible for me to travel from California to challenge the charge. Safe for him as he has had other problems in traffic stops with one being challenged all the way to the Washington Supreme Court, he lost. As for me I have not been detained by law enforcement in over forty years with one only speeding ticket that I received in when I was in my twenty's for ten over the limit. I am a very safe driver and never had any intention to break any law. Larsen indicated that Its a violation even if I travel only a short distance over the limit. To me its the same thing as if he reached into my pockets and took 124 bucks, robbery. As for me I will never set foot in the state again. If you visit watch your speed because the State needs the money. read more

So Friday morning I am in a rush to pick my buddy up and get to Seatac for our flight to Vegas. Running a bit behind as can be expected, I get on 167 south from Rainier Ave S. Being a friday morning there were quite a few of the classic Seattle drivers going 45 mph on the high way. As I pull away from the stoplight I start looking for my opening and as soon as I can squeeze by I drop the hammer and shift into second gear. I accelerate upwards of 75mph and jam into the beginning of the carpool lane, continue accelerating to pass 3 cars and jam back into the normal lane of travel approaching 90 mph. I exit the freeway and am right by Valley Med Center when a State Trooper comes flying up behind me with lights and siren blaring. So I pull over and roll down my window and the trooper approaches my driver side window and says "Whats the rush honey?" So I briefly explain I was picking up a buddy and heading to Vegas for the weekend for his Bachelor party. She then looks up at me with a big smile and says "Vegas will still be there later." I then give her my license, registration and insurance knowing I had a pretty hefty ticket coming my way. She returns to my car a few minutes later with ticket in hand. She says "I decided to not write you up for the speed, 93 in a 60 zone, but I do have to write you up for the HOV violation." Estatic I take the ticket and actually thank her! She told me to have a good trip and good luck gambling and that hopefully I would win enough to pay the ticket. She was probably one of the nicest cops I have ever dealt with. So 5 stars to the WSP today. read more

Two experiences with the WSP. Here is one: My car was towed. Officer on scene wrote am inventory list of what was in my car including $300 cash money and brand new $300 sunglasses during the tow. i literally just bought them and got in an accident on my way home. Picked my car up two days later. Nothing is in my car. Tow office is saying there was nothing in the car to begin with and the officer report is a mistake. WSP and officer Briar Stanley will not return my calls or answer my questions. Where is my stuff? did officer stanley keep the sunglasses for herself? Sunglasses do not walkaway. The car was not broken into. Sometime during all of this, someone has committed a crime and WSP is not bothered. .. read more

Mega dittos on the negative reviews, which are right on. WSP officers should be required to work five years in a real job before becoming certified. And listen to the moaning and complaining about how rough they have it. Compared to our troops overseas (who do have it rough), they have fat salaries, outrageous perks, and still feel entitled to be arrogant to the point of demeaning the citizens they are supposed to serve. Yet, another negative review of WSP Larsen. After reading all the other comments about Larsen, I decided to add my run in with this "officer". A few years ago, I was traveling south on 20 just passed Deception Pass, on the uphill side of the traffic light when I spotted a WSP car traveling north in the middle of a group of cars. I was the next to the last car in a group of four cars, all traveling at the same speed, no more than 5 over the posted speed limit. When the WSP car got to my 10 o'clock positions, I saw the nose of the car do a sudden dive as he slammed on his breaks. This nearly caused chain reaction accident with the cars that were traveling behind him. Then his lights came on and he quickly did a U turn, fish tailing while he made the turn. I thought wow, I wonder what's going on, something big must have just happen. In my review mirror, I saw him quickly whip around the car behind me as it was pulling over. To my surprise, he pulled in behind me. What, all that for me? I thought perhaps that my car meets the description of some escaped murderer, and after I showed him my drivers license, he would apologize and go about his business. But no, all that just to pull me over for "speeding", over 10, as I recall, which was BS. When I asked Officer Larsen about his turn around stunt, in a serious tone, he made some comment about my car being a fast car and that he wasn't going to give me a chance to get away. I just laughed and said really? I'm nearly 50 years old, do I really look like the type of person that would do something like that? Larson is a total asshole. When I went to court, the judge reduced the fine and I think even lowered the speed to 9 over. He was very familiar with Larsen. This was my first experience with WSP, but not my last. read more

I am a retired fire department chief officer from a mid-sized city in Washington, and have several family members in law enforcement (my children). I've had my professional dealings with members of WSP--meetings, accident scenes--and I've been pulled over for speeding twice by WSP (cited for 60 in a 55, my favorite). As a whole, the culture in their organization seems to breed an almost robotic, authoritative manner. One that suggests you better cooperate, or find yourself in handcuffs just for disagreeing with them. I, for one, do not appreciate that approach--that attitude. Maybe it works for them; maybe an intimidating posture helps keep them safe out on the road, but they are the only law-enforcement I've encountered that makes me feel threatened (Germany 1939?). When you are standing there wearing a gun, draped in police authority, holding all the cards, at least give me the impression you are a breathing, compassionate human being. But than the weird shit happen around 4am when I drop my company car the same Russian state patrol following me around for a month lol When he first stopped me on renton exit 2 on 520 towards Fairwood I apologize! He is like you don't need to apologize to me apologize to the state of Washington with super funny accent lol any case whatever but he did follow me for month and gave up one day lol not cool. On the few occasions I have encountered the WSP, I must say that they are professional, and treated me with respect. (These people are paid rather poorly compared to other branches of law enforcement.) And please remember, officers: A verbal warning can be more effective that issuing a citation, particularly when public safety is not disregarded by the violator. (Sometimes ya just make a mistake.) It promotes the idea that y'all are human, just like us civilians. I for one, feel an obligation to honour a promise to be more careful. A citation can generate a sense of animosity and resentment. That said, a repeat offender is deserving of corrective action. The problem is, the fines can really cripple someone who lives paycheck to paycheck. There really should be a graduated fine system, that increases the fine upon repeat offending. Be safe and treat each other with respect and courtesy. Over and out. read more

This is a response (and addition) to Craig O's post. On 1/3/03, the same officer, WSP Officer N. Larsen, pulled me over as I was heading northbound on SR20. We were just south of the Deception Pass area; instead of monitoring the speed zone change, officer Larsen was parked adjacent to a passing zone where one lane opens up into two for a short distance (a place where drivers would naturally speed up to pass someone, right?). My dad and I were headed to my sister's and we were lolly-gagging. I'm 44 and I've never gotten a speeding ticket in my life; I'm usually one of those cars that people are stuck behind and frustrated with. There were 3 cars ahead of me and one behind, pretty much all going the same speed. I KNOW I wasn't speeding. I've been driving SR20 for many years, and I go visit my sister in Mt. Vernon by this route. When you're speeding and see a police vehicle, you immediately look at the speedo in fear. As I noticed the WSP car parked there, my reaction was actually to panic because I was in the left (passing) lane and feared that I was guilty of not being in the right lane so the car behind me could pass if it wanted to. I looked and the car behind me was already in the right lane, so I relaxed, stayed put, and continued in my conversation with my dad. I was amazed when I saw lights behind me and said to my dad, "Whoa, am I getting pulled over?" He also expressed amazement and asked me if I had a taillight out or something. I was floored when Officer Larsen told me that he had clocked me going 61 in a 50 zone. Since I hadn't even checked my speedometer, all I could say was, stupidly, that, "I thought I was going with the flow of traffic..." He stated that he didn't "know what flow of traffic I was talking about... there was only the one car behind you." ??? My dad confirms that I am not crazy, there were three cars in front of us, and I was going just as fast (or slow!) as they were. So maybe I am just the unlucky one and we were all going 61? No way. All I can figure is that Larsen looked up, saw me in the left lane, assumed I had passed the car in the right lane, and assumed I was speeding? I'm contesting the ticket and I'll ask for the prosecutor to produce whatever records Officer Larsen might have documenting my speed. So far, I've had no luck in even getting officials to tell me if records of SMD even exist, but I'll ask for them to produce records anyway. If there's some record of me being clocked at 61mph, I'll gladly pay the ticket, but I know no such record would exist. Thanks, Craig, for posting... it's reassuring to know that I'm not the only person who has been pulled over by Mr. Larsen under shaky pretense. I'm taking a copy of your post to my hearing, too. They confiscated my motorcycle.... which sucked but really they suspected it of being stolen and were just doing their jobs. They held onto it for a while gathering evidence, but when their results were inconclusive they decided to give it back to me with a new VIN instead of crushing it like they could have. :-D Very nice of them!! read more

I commute daily on 1-90 from Seattle to Bellevue. Last week, my car overheated and I had to pull to the side of the highway where I waited for almost 4 hours for a tow truck to come get me. While there, two WS patrol cars stopped to check on me. They both gave me some safety tips for the situation and asked if I needed any help. The second officer, K. Wiley, Badge no. 405, was very kind and even printed up a list of reliable towing companies that I could call. He remained parked behind me for over an hour. At the time, I thought perhaps he was going to write me a ticket for being parked there for so long. The tow truck finally came and the officer stayed until the truck pulled away. I left without thanking the officer, which I regretted once I understood why he had been there. The tow driver explained that the officer was there to keep me safe from getting hit by passing traffic, something that is apparently all too common. So thank-you, Office Wiley, for your kindness and time. You made what was otherwise a scary and frustrating moment much more bearable, and you reminded me of the kindness of strangers.
