ONE I had a small 1940s-1950s mechanical desk clock repaired…read moreby this shop. The estimate was $80. I was called just before Christmas and told it was ready. I was away over the holiday and back mid January. I did not go in and got a call late January by the woman who works at this shop. She got angry right away, insulting me and yelling on the phone that I was using them, that I had no right to do business this way, etc. This made me afraid what she might do in person. I finally went in early February to pick up the clock. The woman then was another person... fawning and smiling, apologetic about her previous outburst, and so on. Of course no one would trust this jekyel-hyde like behaviour. This person should not be working with customers. Her emotional management is that of a child and she needs help. To take out one's personal problems on customers and strangers is just sheer narcissism. I sympathize as a human being, but not as a client. From other reviews, it seems to be a pattern. Secondly she charged me $120. I was not informed of this change before coming to pick up the clock. This is a 50% hike in what I expected to pay. I was not provided with any itemized list of time or expenses. Like another reviewer said, I just picked up the clock and got out of there, not wanting to deal with this woman any more. It is my impression that the older man--who is the bona fide clock-maker and knowledgeable and experienced in this shop--is excellent at what he does, as is his assistant, Fernando. But he is in the control of a mentally troubled manager in his daughter, who acts as "business manager," and is deeply disturbing to deal with and has a paranoia of being ripped off, who over-charges in what ever way she can get away with... TWO We had a 1850s carriage clock repaired by this shop. It is a family heirloom of my partner's, made in France, and used by the family of Florence Nightingale. It came from my partner's grandmother. This clock had not been maintained, and though it ran, it did not keep time and did not ring. So I remembered the excellent older man who is the chief clock-maker in this shop, and told my partner that the clock would be safe with him. My partner brought the clock in for an estimate on cleaning and repair to make it fully functional. When he took the clock out, there was much ooohing and aaahing. This is a clock that is, it turns out, quite common, in fact, and only 8" high by 5" wide. For this estimate we were charged $250. I get it: the clock has to be dismantled and checked for problems. It was worrying though. Fernando, the partner of the older Hungarian owner, was put in charge of the project. When the estimate came, it was $1200 to completely re-furbish this old gem of a clock. My partner gave this a thorough think, and decided to spend the money, because the clock was an heirloom and he was keeping it for his family and because he had fond memories of it from childhood. Two years later, the clock does not run properly. It has always run fast. And stops mid-week. To get it going once it's stopped requires us (once winding it) to shake it and let it run dead about 12 times. After this it begins and keeps going for a week. We are hesitant to go back to the shop to have it looked at for fear of being charged another several-hundred dollar charge just to look at it. To argue against any further charge might bring on the hell-hounds, and a yelling and demeaning freak-out by the woman "manager."

On 21 June 2025, I had a very disappointing customer service experience at Howard Jeweller in…read moreOttawa when I brought in my Vacheron Constantin Watch for a very simple battery replacement. Upon arrival, I was asked what needed to be done, and shortly after, the Watch Repair customer service Manager came out to speak with us. I was informed that the watch would need to stay in the store for a couple of days, which I found surprising considering it is an extremely high end luxury timepiece. I was not comfortable leaving it behind and politely asked if we could book an appointment for a specific time for the battery replacement so I could be present while the work was done. This is something I had successfully arranged at Howard on the same watch two different times in the past before. Rather than understanding my concerns, the manager became defensive and continued to repeat the cost of the battery replacement -- a price we were already prepared to pay. She also asked what I had paid in the past for the same service. I explained that I had previously replaced the battery at their former location about nine years ago for approximately $40. She insisted I was mistaken, despite the fact that I had actual receipt proof. She claimed I had only paid the regular battery replacement fee and not the luxury battery price. As a customer service manager, one would expect her to be clear on pricing and to show respect for a returning customer's knowledge and prior experience -- especially when that experience predated her time at Howard. After finally stating that the cost would be $150, which I was willing to pay, she added that there would be a rush fee if I wanted it done the same day. This seemed unnecessary, especially since I had already said I was happy to come in at a time that would work for the technician. She said she would check his schedule, but instead simply swiped her finger across her phone and closed it, which I found quite odd. Rather than arguing with a client, why not just check the schedule and provide an appropriate time? The situation escalated very quickly when I reminded her that there was no rush, as I was coming in based on their technician's availability. At that point, she started raising her voice and banged the Vacheron Constantin watch on the glass counter and told me to leave the store, adding that we were not welcome back, something as I have no intention of returning after such a horrible treatment. The entire experience was unprofessional and frankly shocking, especially compared to the service I received years ago at their previous location. The former repair manager and staff were respectful, knowledgeable, and valued customer relationships. These are qualities that appear to be completely missing in the current staff. I left the store feeling very disrespected and disappointed. Later that afternoon, we went to La Maison Monaco at the Rideau Centre and ended up purchasing a gold necklace from Gucci as a graduation gift for my son. That was money I had intended to spend at Howard if I had been treated with the courtesy and professionalism all clients deserve. It is unfortunate to see such a decline in customer service, and I sincerely hope Howard Jeweller reevaluates how it treats their loyal clients. Customers should be treated with equal respect regardless of what they are wearing, whether in shorts and a t-shirt or in a three-piece suit. Luxury is not just about the product. It is about the experience.

I had the absolute privilege of bringing some of my most cherished items with me into Joe at Joe's…read moreShoe Repair and was greeted with one of the friendliest and honest people who I have had the honor to make the acquaintance of. I brought with me my leather bag from #Zara Man which needed the main zipper replaced, a knife which was hand made by my father in law in Norway which had a sheath made of some pretty thick leather which needed to be stitched up but in such a way as to accommodate the knife and handle which was made of a combination of mahogany an reindeer antler, and finally what I call my "guns", which are a discreet under the arm leather set of holders for a cell phone on one side and cards, money, passport, etc on the other side which is zippered and needed to have the zipper replaced. Made by #Age, this is a piece of my attire which I have worn daily since I purchased it 4 years ago. I didn't have the cash on me to pay in advance so I told Joe that I would be back before closing to pay for the items that I dropped off. He gave me the expected wait time of one week for pickup which was perfectly reasonable for me. After returning from picking up the cash to pay him an hour later, to my delight, Joe had already hand stitched the sheath of the knife, no easy task as the leather is extremely thick and hard. The knife fit perfectly and snugly in the sheath and the stitching job was perfect with the thread matching the leather to a tee. I paid for the items and watched another satisfied customer trying on his leather shoes which Joe had stretched perfectly to fit the customer's feet. The other customer could not have been more pleased and was going to be bringing in another pair of shoes to get the soles replaced. To my delight, two days later, I received a call from Joe and he told me to come and pick up my bag and my "guns" as they were ready. Not a week later, 2 days! I immediately hopped in my car with a shoe which needed to be glued together and the knife which I wanted to have a belt loop attached to it so I could wear it while at the cottage. When I got to the shop, I had the pleasure of meeting Joe's grandson who in Joe's words was even better than him.... Joe had a shop in Toronto for 27 years prior to opening his shop here in Ottawa 6 years ago and from my experience, he is bar none the best leather worker in Ottawa by far and extremely reasonable, affordable and fair when it comes to pricing. If I could give him 10 stars, I would. In addition, the shoe which I brought in and the knife sheath which I wanted a strap for, Joe fixed on the spot for free, I didn't have to wait and I thanked him and his grandson by buying them coffee. My next visit to them will be with my 20 year old #Timberland leather shoes which need new soles and a good revitalization. I have no doubt that Joe is up to the task!

I needed a couple of spare keys cut, so I visited it yesterday. Joe repairs shoes, boots, bags, zippers, replaces watch batteries, cuts keys, has laminating services, and takes passport photos. Joe is a friendly man and stopped what he was doing as soon as I walked in and greeted me. I handed two keys to him and he quickly cut the duplicates for me. A couple of minutes later they were done, I paid him, and I was on my way. Unfortunately, when I got home I discovered one of the keys didn't work. It didn't even fit the lock. His store is only a few minutes walk away, so I went back and explained the problem. He looked at the keys and realized immediately what the problem was. He had accidentally used the wrong blank key for my duplicate. It was the same shape, but not the same number code. Hey, I learned something new. :) He apologized, cut a new key for me, apologized again, and I was on my way home in no time.
