You have to make an appointment here, and just know you're probably not getting inside for about 15-25 minutes until after your appointment. You wait outside and they call you in by time slot. I am absolutely disgusted. I have been standing in line since 4 pm for a 4:15 appointment in the 39 degree freezing rain. It is now 4:43 and I still have not entered the building. This is absolutely ridiculous and inhumane to be honest. The wait is interminable, the environment is not uplifting, and it is such a waste of time for most people whose only contact with the State government is during a visit to the DMV. This jerk refused to view my doctors letter (written by the VA) because I'm disabled for going to war to his ass... yet since I won't muzzle with a mask, (As the rest of our idiotic population is doing/not doing, fighting about) I can not take my test. (And my kids depend on it). Jerk! He instructed me to reschedule my driving test since his immune system is compromised. WTF, welcome to the new normal. A soft community. Wait til he learns of the FLU! Oddly enough, our Governer came out earlier this week and said that a doctor note is the only reason not to wear a mask. I was really pleased with my experience this time. I was standing in front of the service window 2 (two) minutes after my appointment time. I has several small issues that the DMV representative went out her way to solve. Everyone I had contact with was friendly and helpful. Whoever is in charge down there is doing a great job. Why all the hate for DMVs? The absolute worst I have ever dealt with was Bridgeport, and let me tell you, the Waterbury DMV is heaven compared to that. I've been here many times, but this is the first time since the "new and improved" computer system has been in place. In the past, you enter, jump into a line, and eventually, you get to the windows. Now, you're given a number and wait. And, wait. And, wait. The number of people who use this office has increased since the last time I visited. It used to be a quick trip, but now, with the large number of people needing DMV services, it's not as easy as it once was. I was transferring my plates to a new car. HINT: go to the DMV website and there's a checklist to follow to make sure you have all your paperwork, and you're in compliance. I spent ten minutes doing that, and had everything set. Too many people were complaining because they discovered they were missing a document, or there was a tax problem once they got to DMV. So, my mistake was going during lunch hour. Not only was there more people than would have probably been there at 10am, but the window people were also taking lunch. My fault, not theirs. I walk in, and got a number right away (same person as in the pictures, no iPad in sight!). She even smiled as she directed me to the information line. A brief wait, and the woman there checked my paperwork. She was fast and efficient (since I had all my paperwork and license ready). Then, the wait. As I mentioned, it was lunch hour. It was nearly an hour and a quarter before I hit the window (once people returned from lunch, and all the windows were open, things went fast). My window person, Elaina, was personable, smiled a lot, made small talk while she processed my transfer, and wished me a good day when I left. That made up for the long wait to get there. DMV is a necessary evil. I do as much as I can online, and only when I am required to visit an office do I go. Again, do your homework, have everything ready, go at an off-peak time, and it isn't as bad as it could be. read more

Yup, this place sucks! You come in and take a number and then go to another area or wait in line for information and then go wait even longer. The woman behind the counter of the most unpleasant miserable nasty face people I've ever seen. It's like you're putting them out by having them on their paycheck. How to even start? Not only are the hours of this establishment so screwed up, but half the things that someone should know aren't even provided. I drove here from Bristol leaving early from work, arrive at 3:40 PM to do a simple 10 question knowledge test for a motorcycle endorsement and get turned away because it's 3:30 PM? I understand that one of the present 20+ employees needed a break but my goodness. I walked up to the lady all smiles that I finally would get his done, NOPE! She proceeds to walk away after stating why I was here and walks back saying they are no longer testing for the day. FFS, if there was a place where all of the employees could cease to exist, and the world would be a better place, it is this one. Unfortunately in the state of CT you are funneled to these crappy little places run by even worse human beings who are rude, and honestly just plan mean. First experience here was fine. I got my license transferred from out of state. The wait was long but not horrendous and everyone was nice. Fast forward to trying to get my car registered. The DMV was closed the week beginning 8/10/15. Of course, that week was when my registration expired. Plastered all over the website was "no need to rush to the DMV, deadlines are extended to October 10" Now my registration has expired, but since I already established my residency in CT I thought I was covered. To be safe I called both of the phone numbers listed: 860-263-5700 (Within Hartford area or outside of Connecticut) 800-842-8222 (Elsewhere in Connecticut) Why are there different phone numbers for different areas? Doesn't matter because both of them give busy tones. No automated answering service. I called at several different times over different days and it was the same. Then I emailed my question and I got an automated response saying due to the high volume of emails, they will try to get back to me within 7 days. They actually did get back to me within one day to say they need the photocopy of the title and asked a few more questions. I had a Memorandum of Title which sufficed for a different state that I registered my car in previously, so I emailed back to ask, but decided to go for it anyway. Of course it did not work out! I go in today and he tells me I need the title because the out of state registration is expired. Apparently a Memorandum of Title is different from a photocopy of the title. If anyone answered the phones then I would not have wasted my time going in and waiting in line. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE read more

Being nice and giving two stars. The workers seem nice enough, the check in shouldn't have 2 people when dozens are in line around the building. Don't come on Tuesdays because that is the busiest day. Would be nice if we could do all of this in Derby which is a satellite office. Makes me really appreciate the service at the Maine DMV. I was once in and out of the Kennebunk, Maine office in 5 minutes. Also are part of Homeland Security's ridiculous real ID program so you need to have an active passport or birth certificate to get a license. Over 50 people waiting to check in is madness. Update: Aids rediagnosed I waited at this DMV for two and a half hours just to get my license. No, I wasn't taking the test itself. All I had to do was get the actual license which only requires getting my picture taken, yet it still somehow took two and a half hours for that to occur. I got there at 8:10am. I had to stand in a line to get in like I was at a line at Disney. Once I got in I took a number (A048 for a license renewal). Great! I should be out with in an hour, right? I checked the online wait times and it said 55 minutes from the most recent number given. I was there for 20 minutes already, but was willing to accept a 55 min wait. I was there for 4 1/2 hours!!! For a simple license renewal!!! They kept going backward in the waiting numbers to accommodate people who had left and come back. There was a 20-30 minute of time where I was convinced that no one in the entire place was working because the numbers went nowhere. Once I finally got to the window, the most unhelpful, inhospitable, nasty attitude person was "helping" me. I paid my money then she asked me the usual questions... "is your mailing address the same?" Looooong pause "do you want to continue to be an organ donor?" I said yes again, to which I got a disgusted look from her. I had to stop myself from punching her at that moment as my fiancé is in need of a kidney. I finally told her, " everything is the same as on my previous license and yes I'm registered to vote ". She threw the forms at me to sign and had me take my picture. She showed me my picture and I had her take it again, and again. (If I had to wait over 4 hours for a license renewal this snotty girl is taking the picture as many times as I need her to.). I got my license and celebrated my freedom from hell on the way out. Case in point AVOID THIS OFFICE LIKE THE PLAGUE. CONNECTICUT NEEDS TO DO BETTER FOR ITS HARD WORKING TAX PAYING CITIZENS. WE ARE TAXED TO DEATH AND HAVE NOTHING FOR IT. I went today to get a copy of my title. It cost $25, and I had to wait in two lines. Today's visit took a total 2 and a half hours. It was a February 2019 Saturday and I arrived 35 minutes before the doors opened at 8am. TIPS to make your experience at Waterbury DMV a little less-bad: 1. Before your visit, go to DMV website and make absolutely SURE you have ALL the documents necessary for your transaction. Otherwise, hours of waiting it's finally your turn you will find out you are missing one paper, or the one you have doesn't count because it's not official enough. At the DMV site, PRINT OUT whatever FORMS are required, and fill them out in the peace of your home. Here you will also you have the necessary time to go look up the things that the forms ask you for. If you don't have a printer, go to the library, print it there. You will be glad you did. 2. GET THERE EARLY! Dress for weather. Even in very bad weather it's much nicer to wait outside in the long, long line that wraps around the parking lot before they open than to spend your entire wait time indoors in a very crowded place. Opening time is opening time. Do not expect them to let people in early, no matter how bad the weather is. It was 28 degrees when I arrived at 7:25am this February 2019 for the 8am Saturday opening. The town was still asleep but the parking lot was packed and alive with people lined from the door across the entire length of the parking lot, and continuing on down ANOTHER side of the parking lot. We got at the end of the line, and new arrivals kept coming. I had a companion with me to save my place, so I took a long, long walk to the front of the line, to about 20 people back, and asked: What time did your get here? "5:30!" Yes. You have to arrive 5:30am for the 8am Saturday opening to get a decent place in line. It must have been quite cold at that early. I also walked to about 30 people behind them, that is 50 spaces from the front, and asked what time they got there - 6am! So there you go. At five minutes before 8am, a DMV guy came out to address the crowd, asking for appointment people (drivers tests). Five minutes later they opened and the line moved in fairly steadily. Since we were so very far from the door, I thought we would not get inside (I heard they stop letting folks in when the room gets too full) but the line kept filing in, and we got in. So being warm inside was a positive. The room was packed with people standing in lines or seated in crowded clusters of chairs. I was directed first to a customer service line about 15 people long, and I was given a form to fill which thankfully I already had one done at home, so it was stamped as complete. The worker was not able to tell me how long I might be waiting for my D-ticket to be called, only that D included registration people, which most were here for that. So that implied a long wait, and it was. 3. So be prepared to wait a long time while watching the screen and listening to the calling of the random list of different letter lines being called. It will probably take a long, long time to get to your number. You have to sit in close chairs with a lot of people, and you may have to stand before one is free, though, some will prefer to stand than sit close. So decide how you will entertain your mind. I was blessed with a companion. I brought water and coffee and a small wool blanket (for outside) and I was glad to have those things. I also brought a many just-in-case documents (which I did not need; only my license this time) and put it all in a small backpack. The DMV workers - - keep in mind they work with unhappy people all day long, so they have to tune out the unhappiness a little. As I left it was SUPER CROWDED indoors, with just barely enough room to weave your way out. Then people are in line outdoors still! They all looked anxious to get in, and already weary. They they didn't know it was nicer out there than indoors. So if you have to go on Saturday, like most people, getting there at 7:25am to wait outside in line before opening is FAR better than the sad situation at 10:05am on Saturday at DMV. But getting there even earlier, like 6am at least, would be even better. I heard the worst weekday to go is Tuesday. Probably because that includes everyone who came Saturday, saw the lines outdoors and decided, "No way, Tuesday has to be better." Probably not. I also heard from my friend, a longtime CT resident, that he often hears that Winsted is a better, faster DMV experience. That's what I will try next, if I cannot accomplish what I need online. read more

Not a bad DMV. Just don't go on a Tuesday or Saturday or in the late afternoon. They just have a tough time because of so many rules to follow. The staff was pleasant, efficient and I even got taken 10 minutes early on a random Wednesday morning. They should always have appointments to make sure that the DMV is operating effectively. I have been here a number of times for various things. My most recent visit was for registering and transferring plates. It wasn't as bad as my last visit the time I had to renew my license. The previous visit was when they were working through their transition to a "better" computer system. That was a four hour ordeal. This visit was an hour and a half. The first person we encountered checked over all of the paperwork that we provided, said it was all valid, and gave us our number to be called for the photo. Wow was I pleasantly surprised during my recent visit to the DMV Hub in Waterbury. I went there to change my car registration to CT from OHIO and to get a CT drivers license. I arrived at 8:15 and was all finished by 10:45. The process can be intimidating but the personnel were helpful. They smiled and gave tips on how to move your request along. They were NOT rude or belligerent. They were professional and understanding. CT should be proud of the folks at this DMV unit. Kudos to the lady at desk 12. Seriously? 3 hours to transfer an out of state license? I went to Danbury (no parking available, even when getting there early) and waited 3 hours. A family member tried Waterbury instead and had the same experience even with a 30 minute early arrival before opening time. NH DMV had us in and out in 10 minutes when we moved there. Plus, a lot of the usual transactions could be done at a local city hall. Given the taxes collected here, this should not be rocket surgery. Come on CT!! You can do better! read more

Worst DMV ever! Got my number at 10:08 am on 5/14 three hours later still not called and I have 35 people still ahead of me :(. Had to leave so the number lady gave me another number and said that it would only take an hour to get to that number. Came back 45 minutes later 1:45 at 3:45 still 40 away from my number. I asked and she said the "system" went down and should be up soon. Really I had to pick up my daughter so I left at 4:15 still without registering my car. DMV needs to be privatized or just closed down. What a waste of time. I spent 5 hours at DMV And I have to go back tomorrow. read more

Worst DMV I've ever been to, and I've been to many in larger cities with more population volume. Accompanied someone for a license renewal, and the crowd maintenance here is ridiculous. A long line starts forming an hour and a half before opening time. We showed up at 745 for a 915 opening time (hours are different on Thursday for some reason and we didn't notice this until we were at the location) and waited outside in the cold. The process of renewal itself was alright but the waiting is out of control. They need to figure out a better system for the crowds. I'm baffled at why this is such an issue in a random town like Wtby but not in bigger cities like DC or NY. read more

Worst DMV in ct. I'm active duty military and I went to help my soldier with getting his license plate. I used my card and it said approved so I walked out at 4pm. My soldier called me and said I had to swipe my card again , I was going to go back in when a security put is hand across me telling me I cant go in. I told him I only need to pay for my soldier license plate but then he stated no they closed. This is how this DMV treats military personnel. The first lady was a sweet as pie, the second talk to me like I was 10 years old and the third lady didn't even look up to greet me. No hi, hello, good morning, nothing! She was smacking her gum the whole time, and when she did finally decide to talk to me it was in a rude manner. I'm very polite, I always smile and I treat everyone as I would want to be treated. I do not understand how a person who obviously doesn't want to work with others can get a job in customer service. Anyways, I gave it 3 stars because not everyone there was rude, there were some who were very kind and respectful. The wait was long, but I expected that. The Waterbury DMV is not somewhere I would go again. My daughter took her permit test there a few months back and we had no issues. Today we went to go have her take her license test. She went out with the instructor and came back in a minute later. She wasn't allowed to take the test on my vehicle because it had, "Illegal window tints". However this is the way I purchased my vehicle and there had been no previous problems with it before. Thankfully we had a friend there who let my daughter use her car for the test. The owner of the car said that it had a small crack on the windshield and the instructor said it was fine. They went out to take the test, and once again she came back in a minute later. She wasn't able to test because the crack was "too big", even after the instructor said it was fine. They re- scheduled her two months out in Old Saybrook which is two hours away from us. Apparently they just did not want my daughter to become a licensed driver any time soon. read more
