This is the kind of small town market in the middle of nowhere you'd only find... in a small town in the middle of nowhere. What employee will you get when you come? There's the elderly gentleman that wears nail polish. There's the 70 year old widow that packs a revolver on her side pocket and calls you "honey." There's the 30 something year old stoner that's obviously done time but has cleaned up his act... a bit. There's the ex con that's straight faced and stays out of trouble. And there's the new girl with tattoos that's young but calls you sweetie like an old school diner waitress. Selection? All the beer. Lots of snacks. And everything in between. Not only is this usually your only choice in philomath, it's also probably your best choice. Besides the usual, do you need the exotic? It's a way long distance to the next nearest fuel if you don't have a Pacific Pride card or the ability to use commercial fuel services. Not such a huge deal anymore with the big Harleys having 5+ gallon fuel tanks and better mileage motors. But 30+ years ago, 100 or so miles was about the range of the average chopper which, "conveniently" was the distance from the Shell station in Estacada to Detroit. All gone now :( The wildfire that swept through Mill City, Gates and Detroit took out many homes and businesses, this store among them. I hope they are able to rebuild but even if they do, it will never be the same.

Getting gas here is a chore now…read more OK, so now you can pump your own gas in Oregon. I don't have a problem with that. But I DO have a problem with pumps that can take cards, but don't, with no attendants, forcing you to walk quite a ways across a lot into another building out of view of your car and wait in line. When you go to insert your card you're met with a little screen that says "Machine not currently taking cards. Please pay inside" or something like that. Even though the machine has a card reader, and I've used it before in the past under previous ownership. So OK, cool no problem. My legs aren't broken. I'll just walk inside. Now I have to wait in line at least 10 minutes behind people humming and hawing at what they want out of the deli case. Or to stare blankly at the menu as if they've never seen or heard of chicken on a stick before. I do finally get up there. I hand the kid my card. "How's it going? I'd like some gas. Fill on pump three please" He asks me how much? I say "a fill, I want to fill it up please" Then he asked me, well do you know like what dollar amount that's gonna be?. Really man? No, that's kind of what you're supposed to tell me after the car has been filled up. So they don't have the technology to put an authorization on my card, and then charge me what the total is when I'm done pumping the gas? Am I the only person that ever comes in and asks them to fill it up? Really? I say "Just give me $10" Only $10? "Yes please, thanks." (Just give me enough to get up the road to someplace that knows how gas stations are supposed to work.)
