One of the trails passes through an area with several bird houses while another trail has historical plaques commemorating important woman scientists. There are also a number of poetry plaques scattered along the trails and an interesting bridge over a water catchment area. The trails are partially shaded if you go in the morning.

There are two parking spots. For a longer walk with some city views, park at the small dirt lot on the north side of Westridge Dr just west of Gail Gardner Way. Follow the signed trail a few hundred yards west along the road to where you head north away from the road and across a wooden bridge. After the monsoon rains, a variety of flowers can be seen especially in the first section. Midway along the trail you will be just below an area of housing development which may have some construction noise, but it was very minimal on the Monday that we went. The second parking lot which is further up and closer to the petroglyphs is at 951 Downer Trail. There are some switchbacks climbing up hill towards the end of the trail where you will be rewarded with a large boulder that has a variety of petroglyphs. Just before this signature boulder is another boulder with a few additional petroglyphs. You cannot climb to the very top, so bring your telephoto lens if you want sharp closeups, though I got a decent shot with just an iPhone. This trail has minimal shade mid day, so start early or hike on a cool day.

Creek and streams and little lakes here and there being a much appreciated addition of beauty and life to this area! This is really a wonderful place for hiking, mountain biking and most other outdoor activities. One of my favorites places in the world!

It can be exhausting or rough, but there are plenty of benches you can stop at along the way to take a breather. As well as bring plenty of water too. You can also stop by the nearby radio towers too but can't go inside but that's good. Overall I would recommend this spot to get some air and enjoy the scenery. Just make sure to use your GPS so you don't get lost along the way.

The parking area is found at the SW intersection of Antelope Ln and N Castle Dr and is quite large. I went on a cold weekday and only saw 5 other hikers but undoubtedly this gets very busy on a weekend judging by the size of the parking lot. There is an installation of contemporary artwork of foraging deer / horses as you start the trail. The trail itself is very wide and a mix of dirt with some rock and climbs at a gradual incline all the way up. At each of the major switchbacks there are nicely maintained picnic tables offering great views of the valleys to the east and north. A handful of interpretive signs offer information about wildlife, geology and history of the hill. There are also GPS and mile markers at regular intervals. As you approach the top a few of the switchbacks are a bit steeper but the view at the top is worth it as you are now able to see the southern and western mountain ranges as well as all the way around to the east and north. A picnic table is also situated the top along with additional historical info. The top can be windy so be prepared, also this is not the best trail to take right after a rain or snow. I went two days after a snow and even though the majority of snow had melted it felt like I had an extra 2 pounds of mud on my boots at times !

Sycamore canyon is located near Cottonwood/Clarkdale, accessible via 11 miles of dirt road,…read moresignificantly less people compared other trails, great place to come to enjoy wildlife and water holes. I would recommend SUV or truck to drive this 11 miles dirt road but I did see one Sedan parked at the trailhead. No entrance fees to this area. Hike to the first water hole/ swimming hole is only 1.1 miles one way, except the initial 200 feet elevation drop off, trail is relatively flat. Trail is marked with carin, since trail is less traveled, look for carin to stay on the trail. First water hole is deep enough for cliff jump. If you arrive early in the morning, water and lights are perfect to take reflecting images. Water stays cold even in the summer. No restrooms or drinking water available, bring plenty of water and food when visiting this trail

OK. This is a super short and super easy hike. It is slightly challenging if you take the direct…read moreroute straight up. Going this direction, it is paved all the way to the base of the rock formation forming the top. Going this direction is also steeper than going the opposite direction (CCW). From here, you're climbing, not hiking. But that part is pretty easy too...just be careful and stay within your limits. Perigrin falcons nest on the top rock section and this section does have a nesting closure period which I believe is summer through fall...but you should research the exact range as I'm not sure. If you keep your eyes open, you can see them most times of the year...but they're fast! You can also get to the base of the rock section forming the top, by a dirt path. The grade is easier, but the path there is longer. You'll occasionally see mountain bikes on this path, so heads up. Regardless of which path you use to get to the top, keep your eyes open (& ears a listening) for rattlesnake. I've seen them multiple times hiking this area. I've also seen numerous hikers that let their dogs run free (against park rule). It would not be a good day for your dog if it gets bitten.

The biggest complaint I have is needing to pay for parking because it's not that big of a hiking trail or spot. But it can still give you a decent view of the scenery as well as see beautiful rock formations. Will also say that the spot where the memorial for where the constellation crashed is touching. However, again this is not the best hiking spot.

So if you're looking for a short easy one to three hour walk this is a great place to visit. See my older review about the naming of this park dedicated to the Navy Constellation which crashed here. There is ample parking at the trailhead and restrooms. Make sure to bring your water though because it can be hot in the summer. However their are great trees to provide rest areas. It is full of birds and wildlife.
