i've never had malaysian food but this hit the spot. i love asian/indian cuisine and this tasted like the mix between the 2. i got the traditional malaysian dish which was alright. the chicken was a little dry and egg a little over cooked. we also got this super good chicken which melted in my mouth it was called the ayam rendang kerisk. it tasted like butter chicken but with less of a spice and more of a creamy/coconuty flavor. we also got the nasi lemak biasa which was nice and light. it wasn't too flavorful/spiceful but the components of chicken and veggies was nice. more of a soup instead of a curry. read more

I'd give this place 3.5 stars if I could. Not bad at all, but I have to admit to 'em being biased by how much hubs and I love the Thai place next door. So to find a number of similar dishes, but not to be able to have pork as a protein is a bit of a bummer, but one suspects this, anytime one goes to a Malaysian or Indonesian place. Hubs got a curry chicken that he liked, and I got nasi goreng with prawns (shrimp fried rice). Stopped by for lunch and got the sup ayam kari, which was the chicken coconut curry, and subbed the rice for roti. The curry itself was excellent but it barely had any chicken in it -- maybe 1 small piece. Flavors great; perhaps another visit would fare better. read more

Tried to call for a reservation but it wasn't needed for today's Sunday lunch. Anyway, I got what I wanted which was my Teh Tarik iced given the hot summer weather. The server was very kind and accommodating! Nasi goreng was delicious, I loved the effect of adding in lime juice over the mixed fried rice. It balances the saltiness of the soy sauce. I loved this meal--everything was so delicious. We had heard from many friends that Amsterdam has some outstanding Malaysian food. They were right. The menus are well marked for spiciness, and nearly everything can be made into a vegetarian or pescatarian meal. We started with samosas. I have had all kinds of samosas, all over the world--Asia, Europe, North America. These were the best. I had steak sate, which came with homemade pickles, red onion, cucumber, soft rice balls, and and amazing sate sauce. My husband had the kari lamb with potatoes, okra, beans and bell peppers. It came with a huge mound of rice and roti bread. Beers and wine were very decently priced, and because it was a hot day, my husband tried the Malay lemonade, which was very different, and very welcome. Service was very prompt, and our waiter was very knowledgeable. He was able to advise us on the dishes, and helped pair them with beer and wine. I only wish I had room for dessert. As corny as it sounds Wau is like WOW, KAPOW, ZEEZEEZOW! How is it possible this place only has so few reviews, yet is on Zeedijk waiting to Wau people with Malaysian delicacies!? With the unfortunate low number of Malay places, you might be asking yourself... what exactly IS Malaysian food?? Let's just say when you mix Indonesian/Chinese/Indian and of course traditional Malay... you get an interesting mixture of exotic asian flavors sure to make your hello kitty, peace sign, picture taking taste buds love you long time! When you look at the menu, you'll probably see some similar items... grilled meat sate sticks, nasi goreng... and then the rest, you might be like HUH!? I haven't had everything on the menu, but I can tell you my favorites so far! Nasi Lemak (The national Malaysian dish) - This is a crazy combination of small fried anchovies, egg, chicken curry, beef stew, veggies, sambal (spicy shrimp paste), and peanuts, all sitting campfire style kumbaya-ing around a semi-spherical mound of coconut rice. Traditionally, you take a little of each in one bite and eat it with the rice, but I love the flavors of them separately so definitely give both eating styles a chance! I like everything sitting on this banana leaf plate, but the beef stew has soooo much flavor and combined with the crispy mini anchovies and rice is delish!! One more time... DEEEEELISH! Char Kway Teow (Or something like this....) - If you see something on the menu with fried rice noodles, prawns, bean spouts, egg, chicken topped with fried shallots... something like that... GET IT!! Wow... I mean... Wau it's yummy! The noodles are so fat, they are unrecognizable... I'm talking fruit roll-up girth here folks. Either way, they are soaked with flavor and our table devoured this in no less than 6.3 minutes!! Bottom line, I've been here twice, tried different plates each time, never have been disappointed. The prices are a little higher than I would thought (14-18) but for getting something different and super lekker, I WILL be back for more Malaysian Sensation!!!! read more

So I am somewhat of a non-pretentious foodie traveling solo (used to live here) and was tired after a long day of work - wanting a yummy dinner. They had a price fixed menu at the door and I decided to have an adventure. 22.50 euros for a 3 course meal. First the service is SO friendly and attentive. Second the food is incredible! I was surprised at how good - I had a mango and seaweed salad for starter, spicy mussels and rice and then a black rice pudding for dessert - all awesome. I am still stuffed but it was worth it! It is a shame that they only have 3 1/2 stars, I read through the reviews and the bad ones are quite old. If you were looking for an interesting email that is quite a good deal I would say head in immediately you won't be sorry! read more

Just passing through Amsterdam and wanted to try different cuisine. Friendly, helpful and attentive service. Delicious food. The place was packed with people which by itself is a good sign. One minor issue, not that it specifically applied to our party, was a lack of handicapped accessibility. But wheelchair access is probably impossible in the old historic parts of Amsterdam. Let me go into how horrible this place is: 1) We waited outside for 25 minutes when the waitress said it would be 15-20. 2) Once inside, we waited 15 minutes for the waitress to approach us about drinks. The waiter told us that Pina Coladas were 3.5 Euros; what a great deal we thought, so we ordered 5. 3) The drinks took half an hour to arrive once ordering. 4) We received our food a full hour and 5 minutes after ordering. 5) Once we received our food, there was hair in one of the items. 6) Here's the kicker: when we got the check, the waitress tried charging us 7.5 Euros for the (mediocre) Pina Coladas. She then lied, saying she was talking about the beers when she said 3.5 Euros. Don't go this place, the service actively tries to scam you. read more

Initially, a little weary as they had a big group to attend to, however, we were seated right away, and service was great on top of the food. Great gluten free options! The food here was so good we actually visited it twice in a week. I have to eat gluten free and the waitress definitely understood my needs, but brought the cook out to speak with me. What a level of confidence that gives you! It was lunch and I ordered the special which was a fried rice with chicken. It had onions, red peppers, carrots, and so much more. Tons of flavor, but not too spicy and great presentation. My husband ordered some type of platter that had chicken kabobs which was very good as well, but a little spicy for him. The second time I actually just ordered the same thing as it worked for me and was so good, but my husband had something like a lemongrass chicken with a coconut curry sauce. Which was outstanding and served on a cast iron skillet. The ambiance is very soothing with soft lighting and the place is kept very clean. The waitress was very attentive. Waited 30min for the food, waitress didn't say anything at all. It was 1:30pm and I didn't expect this at all. Focus, focus on food. I ordered morning glory (kangkung fried with dried shrimp and chilli sauce), the morning glory was chopped too long, feeling like horse eating row grass. The vegetable was chosen too mature, thus the texture in mouth was awful. I had Hainan chicken rice, which is a famous dish of Malaysia. Chicken was served warm, I immediately got this was cooked by someone called 'outsider' the man who never been to Malaysia or someone don't know Malaysian cookery at all. So I was right, it was different version of the Hainan Chicken Rice - a rather creative version. My party had fried rice, it wasn't too bad but we both agreed this is not a great restaurant at all. Got stuck in Amsterdam due to a code red wind storm (90 miles per hour) and wanted some spicy food. They weren't even open yet but they let us in anyways and serviced us right away. I love the decorations and the staff was extremely friendly. We ordered a couple curry plates that were so good. I asked for something spicier than what they had on all the tables and they did bring me some peppers. I think they noticed that it was hot but I could go hotter and they offered me something I guess they never give to customers. I said I would try it and it was SO good. extra hot. That spice that makes you feel like you just smoked lol. The chef even came out to show us what it was and had some pepper that I guess that spicy paste is made of. Above and beyond service. The restaurant is small and dimly lit and the decor is that of tropical celebration. It has been more than a month since I visited this nice restaurant in Zeedijk. I can't remeber the name of the dish I had anymore but it was delicious. They use coconut in many of their dishes (probably because it is like that in Malay cusine) which I am not a big fan of, but that is just me. It think it is probably a mom and pop run establishment. The food was tasty and very good. So was the service. No fancy over sized glittering plate with tiny little food scattered on it in this restaurant :-) :-) They serve good portions of the dish you order, more than enough to fulfil your hunger for taste and food. The price is reasonable as well. It can get quite busy here later in the evening. So if you want to check in without a reservation on a week end, be a bit early like 7 o clock. This place has a relaxing atmosphere and a menu that's easy to understand. The food is delightful and the staff is very happy to explain anything you wish. We got there right before it got busy, which I only mention because after 40 mins of watching the restuarant fill up with people being served ahead of us, we asked our waitress if she could check on our food. It was clear that someone made a mistake- she brought us menus again and asked us to confirm what we ordered. After doing so, she went back to the kitchen and didn't return for some time (our drinks were long empty, as was our water bottle). We thought maybe they'd put our order in ahead of the more recent patrons or at least offer more drinks but alas, we were served dead last without any explanation. People who came in after us paid their bill and left before we got food. No one checked up on us at all. My cocktail wasn't on the bill- unsure if that was an apology or an accident. Wasn't bothering to find out. Accidents happen but how they are handled is important- this felt shady. read more

I've been looking for a Malaysian-Singaporean restaurant in Amsterdam for some time now and was hoping that I'd found one. The menu looked good enough - they had all the correct names of the dishes in both Malay and Chinese dialect, which was enough draw me there for a visit. Unfortunately, Wau just wasn't authentic. The Char Kway Teow dish I ordered looked sort of like the real thing but tasted nothing like it was supposed to and it was incredibly salty. I guess this might be okay for people who don't mind westernised, MSG-laden Asian food (on the salty side, really salty) but for me, it was greatly disappointing. If you are a Singaporean or Malaysian hoping for a taste of home, don't bother. read more

"Delicious authentic Malaysian food", that's what the lady customer told me as she was leaving the restaurant and it is true. I recommend the lemon chicken with coconut sauce over rice. Quality ingredience, especially chicken chunks moist and flavorful. I recommend the ginger lemongrass tea because it is fresh slice of ginger and fresh lemongrass in a cup of boiling water, no tea leaves, no caffiene which seemed very unique to me. It's a simple operation, two cooks in the kitchen and one Gentleman serving food. He is very friendly and we asked him of all sorts of questions about the history of the Dutch and he was happy to chat with us. read more
