    I'd give this place 3.5 stars if I could. Not bad at all, but I have to admit to 'em being biased by how much hubs and I love the Thai place next door. So to find a number of similar dishes, but not to be able to have pork as a protein is a bit of a bummer, but one suspects this, anytime one goes to a Malaysian or Indonesian place. Hubs got a curry chicken that he liked, and I got nasi goreng with prawns (shrimp fried rice). I liked my dish well enough, service was prompt, and it was all good, so I'm glad we tried this place.

    Tried to call for a reservation but it wasn't needed for today's Sunday lunch. Anyway, I got what I wanted which was my Teh Tarik iced given the hot summer weather. The server was very kind and accommodating! Nasi goreng was delicious, I loved the effect of adding in lime juice over the mixed fried rice. It balances the saltiness of the soy sauce. As usual, the roti was made fresh and was perfect with the curry dip. I really love this place and I highly recommend it to everyone who would love to experience a very flavorful cuisine.

    I loved this meal--everything was so delicious. We had heard from many friends that Amsterdam has some outstanding Malaysian food. They were right. The menus are well marked for spiciness, and nearly everything can be made into a vegetarian or pescatarian meal. We started with samosas. I have had all kinds of samosas, all over the world--Asia, Europe, North America. These were the best. I had steak sate, which came with homemade pickles, red onion, cucumber, soft rice balls, and and amazing sate sauce. My husband had the kari lamb with potatoes, okra, beans and bell peppers. It came with a huge mound of rice and roti bread. Beers and wine were very decently priced, and because it was a hot day, my husband tried the Malay lemonade, which was very different, and very welcome. Service was very prompt, and our waiter was very knowledgeable. He was able to advise us on the dishes, and helped pair them with beer and wine. I only wish I had room for dessert. Soooooo good.

    As corny as it sounds Wau is like WOW, KAPOW, ZEEZEEZOW! How is it possible this place only has so few reviews, yet is on Zeedijk waiting to Wau people with Malaysian delicacies!? With the unfortunate low number of Malay places, you might be asking yourself... what exactly IS Malaysian food?? Let's just say when you mix Indonesian/Chinese/Indian and of course traditional Malay... you get an interesting mixture of exotic asian flavors sure to make your hello kitty, peace sign, picture taking taste buds love you long time! When you look at the menu, you'll probably see some similar items... grilled meat sate sticks, nasi goreng... and then the rest, you might be like HUH!? I haven't had everything on the menu, but I can tell you my favorites so far! Nasi Lemak (The national Malaysian dish) - This is a crazy combination of small fried anchovies, egg, chicken curry, beef stew, veggies, sambal (spicy shrimp paste), and peanuts, all sitting campfire style kumbaya-ing around a semi-spherical mound of coconut rice. Traditionally, you take a little of each in one bite and eat it with the rice, but I love the flavors of them separately so definitely give both eating styles a chance! I like everything sitting on this banana leaf plate, but the beef stew has soooo much flavor and combined with the crispy mini anchovies and rice is delish!! One more time... DEEEEELISH! Char Kway Teow (Or something like this....) - If you see something on the menu with fried rice noodles, prawns, bean spouts, egg, chicken topped with fried shallots... something like that... GET IT!! Wow... I mean... Wau it's yummy! The noodles are so fat, they are unrecognizable... I'm talking fruit roll-up girth here folks. Either way, they are soaked with flavor and our table devoured this in no less than 6.3 minutes!! Bottom line, I've been here twice, tried different plates each time, never have been disappointed. The prices are a little higher than I would thought (14-18) but for getting something different and super lekker, I WILL be back for more Malaysian Sensation!!!!

    We ate dinner in this restaurant near RedLight District. The chicken satay sticks were delicious. The owner and his wife stopped by our table for conversation. Atmosphere was cozy. We highly recommend this restaurant because of good service and delicious food.

    Waited 30min for the food, waitress didn't say anything at all. It was 1:30pm and I didn't expect this at all. Focus, focus on food. I ordered morning glory (kangkung fried with dried shrimp and chilli sauce), the morning glory was chopped too long, feeling like horse eating row grass. The vegetable was chosen too mature, thus the texture in mouth was awful. I had Hainan chicken rice, which is a famous dish of Malaysia. Chicken was served warm, I immediately got this was cooked by someone called 'outsider' the man who never been to Malaysia or someone don't know Malaysian cookery at all. So I was right, it was different version of the Hainan Chicken Rice - a rather creative version. My party had fried rice, it wasn't too bad but we both agreed this is not a great restaurant at all. Don't go.

Or basically a skewer of marinated sirloin beef. Very tasteful in my opinion. There was some slices of chicken shawarma as well which was also full-flavored and delish! All of it sat on some mixed greens and a side of fries. Talk about stuffing my face in hunger! The whole plate was totally filling, and pretty much put an exclamation point to my eating night. As for dining, there were larger tables in the rear of the restaurant, and tables meant for two in the front. Service, I had no issue as the manager (possibly owner) presented my plate and made sure I was fully attended to. He came back several times to check if I needed anything. There really wasn't anything super fancy about this place, but I didn't mind it. It was fast, simple, and filling to say the least. I totally recommend giving these guys a try. And with their fries, they will offer you some sauce (as if it was included in the set price) - only to be billed $1.95 for a very small packet of sauce. Too bad Netherlands got them as immigrants -- these people should not be allowed to exist as they only give amsterdam a bad name.

Touted primarily as an Indonesian Restaurant, it also qualifies itself as an Indian eatery, as well as presenting the cuisine of Suriname - and doing it all under the umbrella of being Halal (which may also mean "Pradesh"). Now that's a lot of cuisines, all from different corners of the globe. But then I recalled my week shooting a movie in Belize a decade ago, and there was the connection. In Belize there seems to be an unwritten rule (or tradition) that was proudly announced by our liaison from the film office. And that was that ALL OF THE GROCERY STORES (the country only had small mom & pop places) in Belize City were owned and run by Indians from India; and the most popular food, being Chinese steam table take-out joints like we have in America (fried rice, spring rolls, noodles, sweet & sour chicken/shrimp, spicy saucy stir fried meat & vegies, etc...), and these places were always packed with lines around the corner. They were also ALL OWNED AND RUN by Vietnamese extended families. And the Vietnamese community mixed very well with the Indian families, having similarly imported ingredients from afar, as well as exotic flavors, similar spices, rice based cuisines, and they both cooked curries. Now for Suriname and Indonesia and how those two food cultures fit into the menu profile at Restaurant Riaz. I have eaten a lot of Indonesian food in my day, and its flavor pallet is very similar to India, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand, all using coconut milk, peanuts, chili-peppers, potatoes, green peppers, fish-sauce, vegies, and similar meats and seafoods, plus blends of sweet and salty and spicy and sour; and all of them use rice. Now the thread that sews Suriname to these others is that it was also a Dutch Colony, as were Indonesia and parts of India (like Sri Lanka [Ceylon at the time]). So the Dutch created huge incentives for the Indians in their empire to relocate to the sparsely populated Suriname; and these Indians brought their food with them. So when I ate lunch in New York City at a Surinamese place in The Bronx, I was surprised to see the menu filled with Curries, Chutney, Samosas, Fried Pakoras, and everything was served with rice and Indian Roti, (an oily flour tortilla-like bread), often accompanied by a small bowl of rich brown Curry-Gravy to dip into. The food from Suriname was Literally INDIAN FOOD. Thus the culinary story of Restaurant Riaz and its diverse menu started to make a lot of sense. The Indonesian food complimented the Surinamese meals; and the Indian dishes blended seamlessly with the other cuisines. And the Roti and Curry-Gravies went perfectly with everything. Restaurant Riaz is a big success story in my book. I can't wait to come here again - and this time I am going to bring a whole bunch of friends.

We started with a Hugo spritzer and a cold beer. Ended up ordering the one course rijsttafel. They choose what comes with the meal. It's several small dishes full of flavor and cooked to perfection. €31.50 pp Make sure you have plenty of water if you're not use to spicy food. The service was spot on. Glad we tried something new.
