The receptionist called me as I am in the parking lot to inform me I would not be receiving the services because I was 10 minutes late. However, I would be charged the full amount. Their "policy" of a no-show with full charge after 10 minutes was never discussed when I was booking the appointment. I will be taking this up with my credit card company to dispute the charge. Terrible customer service. I will never recommend this to anybody. This was my very first experience with this company. I was refereed by a friend. I tried to make my appointment online but had a little trouble. I called right away and the lady at the desk was great and made sure i got in for the time that I was attempting online. I arrived a few minutes before my appointment as I figured there would be paperwork. I was right. Just one page for information. My appointment was at 1:15 and was greeted to go back to the room about 5 min or so after that. The rooms are very clean and well kept. There is nice set up for the different procedure they do there. I ordered a couple different things. Hannah who was my cerologist was fantastic. They use a wax there that doesn't really stick to the skin. It was great cause I didnt turn red like I did before from other waxings. She was very nice and talked to me during the procedure. She made sure that I was happy with what she did. She wanted me to make sure that I told her if there was anything that I wasn't happy with. We had a few laughs as everything was getting done. I went home feeling good. It was great that everything went so smoothly so to speak. They did sell me a skin treatment to help with any skin issues after the procedure was completed. Everything looked great when I got home. I am pretty happy with the entire experience all around. The pricing was decent cause i got 50% off the most expensive procedure. Ill have to start saving up for the next time. I went for the first time today for a Brazilian wax which is hardly a 5 star experience anywhere you go. I've had a few in my life and this was by far and away the best in a few ways. It was twice as fast as I've ever had which is great, let's get that sh*t over with. Also Hannah was my esthetician and she was fantastic. Super chill and one of the best waxes in the hair removal category I've had. Plus first time visitors receive half price on their most expensive seevixHighly recommend. ***edit*** Downgrading my previous review from a 5 to a 3 star. Not sure if Hannah no longer works there or I just booked too short notice but had my last wax with Alyssa and definitely had a lot more hair-ripping than hair removal. I had my first wax experience today it was horrible. So much missed hair , you can barely tell I waxed it looks shaved with hair in between the waxed part. The lady doing my wax wasn't friendly and seemed very irritated with me and having to stop being I needed a drink I'm am also pregnant. She didn't seem interested in finishing my Brazilian and offered another service that I just agreed todo to get out of the negative vibe room. I wouldn't recommend waxing the city to anyone . She was willing to chat and always remembered me, so it was always like picking up the conversation where we left off at my last appointment. I don't usually do reviews but this has been weighing in my mind! I went to Waxing the City not too long ago to see if they had availability for a walk-in, unfortunately the very nice girl at the front explained it was going to be a little longer of wait which wouldn't work for me but did offer to make an appointment for a later date. I stayed for a few awhile looking over their products while she checked quite a few customers in and out of their appointments. Seemed to be a pretty busy day which is great for them! Just before I left, I said to the front desk girl "looks like you're due for a lunch break!" , where she nervously but jokingly said "if only we had time for a lunch break." I wasn't going to ask but just couldn't resist and responded "oh no why?" She didn't go into much detail but said that they typically don't have anyone there for lunchtime coverage. I asked if there was a manager around to help, and she responded that they currently weren't there and not sure when they will come in, which seemed a little off to me. From experience of my own I know that an overworked employee is not a happy employee, but this one definitely kept a positive attitude. I asked how long had she been there as it was around 2pm, and she had been there since opened around 8am! WOW! I hope this isn't a "normal" thing for this company. I told her I hope she has a great day and she had the brightest smile while telling me the same back! As I was headed out, she was starting to rreceive several large packages to deal with. Alyssa was my wax specialist and she did an amazing job. Absolutely NO complaints from me on her service. She was quick, very nice and knew what she was doing. On our first experience, she made my brows a little too thin. I mentioned it to her on our second appointment and she corrected it and my eyebrows were perfect. SO happy. My problem lies within the front office. I was in for my second appointment and I gave a $5 tip on service. I created a third appointment and then left. On my way home, I received an email receipt which showed a $500 tip - making my bill $522.00. HOLY. CRAP. I immediately called and the girl at the front desk was very apologetic but seemed confused on how to stop the transaction and put the correct one through. She commented that the front desk manager was out on vacation but she was going to try to change the transaction. Then she asked me to return to the shop. I was already on the interstate on my way home, but I turned around and headed back to the salon. When I got into the salon, she had managed to correct her mistake, once again, super apologetic and I get it; it happens. I did ask for her manager to call me, if she could leave a message for them to do so. I just wanted to chat with them quickly and I knew that this was going to have repercussions on my bank account. She took down my info and off I went again. The next day, I left town, out of state. I knew I should've looked at my bank account, but honestly, I was scared to. So finally, once I got to my destination, I looked at my bank account and sure enough, the $522 charge was pending on my account. My bank was pulling funds from a reserve line to cover the pending $522 which resulted in over $20 in charges for me. Luckily, no checks or other charges were returned/bounced due to the charge because of my reserve line covering the charge. The charge finally cleared AND at the $27.00 price. But after my reserve line kicked in to cover my account, charging me multiple times to pull money over. I called Waxing the City the following week - asked to speak to the front office manager. I was told they were not available and once again, left a message. I called once more; same thing. I had every intention of coming back for my third appointment (this week) but I opted to canceled. When I called, they asked if I wanted to reschedule and I said that I would not be returning. The girl who answered simply said "Okay, have a great day!" and hung up. Didn't even ask WHY I wasn't returning. Very disappointing. read more

Absolutely the worst Brazilian I have ever had! Jen did a horribly painful job. Just Whalen I thought that was the end of it, the rash from the wax being too hot and talk about ingrowns.. omg! No and I mean no amount exfoliating is going to work with this!!! I am not new to the service and I know what a proper wax is like... btw one could choke on the baby powder she used! The descriptions for the male waxings are not sufficient. They need diagrams. They describe vague body areas, and even sometimes use adjectives as nouns. I had to call in advance to be sure what to expect from a full brazillian male wax. I was told it would be everything that would be covered by a pair of boxer briefs. I then came in confident of what to expect, but my specialist, Jamey, didn't finish. She neglected to do my inner thighs next to my region and the sides of my butt. When I said something, she said she didn't have time because of another booking. I later found out her next booking wasn't for another 40 minutes! The waxing cost $109, and she didn't even do the whole thing. I feel VERY cheated! read more

ATTENTION GENTLEMEN: If you are looking to get a complete Brazilian wax or just your butt waxed - Waxing the City is the place to go! The staff are so damn friendly! The service and sessions go as seamless and "natural" as they can go with the aestheticians applying product in your "private areas." I don't know any place in Des Moines area that offers Brazilian waxes for men other than Waxing the City. Also, the prices are VERY, VERY reasonable. If you want to get your butt waxed (cheeks and crack), it's a total of $40! That's super inexpensive when you compare other salons that only offer women the service. I can't reiterate how professional the women are at the salon. They've never made me feel like a creeper or weirdo for wanting a smooth butt. They are always welcoming and are willing to participate in conversations if you engage them (although, I try to let them focus and do their thing). I've been here twice. Upon arrival I was greeted with a friendly smile and given a short form to fill out (first timer) then Hannah took me back for a Brazilian. She was very sweet and easy to talk to and it was a nice distraction from the pain, considering I'm more sensitive due to my pregnancy! She was very quick, thorough and I was very pleased with the result! They have candles, body and lip scrubs, lotion, and bath bombs for purchase (amongst other items) I got a sample of the body scrub and purchased a Caribbean passion bath bomb and exfoliating gloves! I'm new to the waxing game and this was my very first time, so consider that when reading further. My friend told me about the 50% off first time special. After reading the reviews I didn't realize there are different types of waxes. I went in blind and left there wondering why anyone would pay for that kind of experience (waxing in general). The appointment I made was for a bikini and Brazilian. After the first rip I was yelling and ready to leave. :) It was basically a replay of Steve Carell's waxing experience. The lady assured me my reaction was normal and she did seem relatively unphased by my pain. I didn't hear anyone else carrying on like me. Rookie problems maybe? I survived the bikini portion. They gave me a pamphlet of information that would have been helpful to have before I got there. In the days that followed I ended up with a pretty nasty rash. I don't have anything to compare this experience to but I definitely felt like I was walking in blind about what to expect. read more

I was left to pluck for over an hour to remove what I could; however, was unable to get completely rid of some of it due to the extent of hair remaining. I was visiting my sister and she recommended I try Waxing the City. It was not a good experience. The prices are quite a bit higher than I usually pay, but when I booked online the website said a 20% discount would be applied when I paid at the store as a new customer. I decided to go ahead and give it a try. When I arrived, the receptionist who was not wearing a mask, said someone would come get me for my appointment. My technician came, and she was actually great. But, when I was done and went to pay, the receptionist informed me that they aren't honoring any promotions right now. I said it was not on the website that this discount is no longer being offered (which has been updated recently with Covid information) but she was very unfriendly in telling me they would not give me the discount despite what the website says. I told her I would not have booked without the discount. She did not seem to care and did not seem interested in my return business or my sisters. The waxing was not really painful because they use a hard wax. My waxer used small strips and successfully plucked a long-stuck ingrown hair. She was very respectful and exited the room while I undressed. She also provided a modesty cover for below the belt. The whole process seemed to take much longer here than at European Wax Center, though, and I prefer a speedy experience. read more
