The Black House on Beech is a small stunner called The Starling. Perhaps The Startling might be more apropos because it is a 2-story 3BR, 2BA house on a small footprint painted a pure matte black. Inside is modern and simple, decorated in black and white. They've considered every comfort -- there's a sauna, a hot tub, fire pit and hammock-- outside. Connect to the house Wi-Fi, watch a movie, play some tunes on the turntable, challenge your companions to a few board games--inside. Or walk a few minutes to Staymaker Restaurant at Journeyman Distillery, stock up on staples at Froehlich's Kitchen & Pantry, or enjoy a casual lunch/brunch at Oaks Eatery. This is a fine getaway for a small group or family. We only had a small mixup with the Wi-Fi but they were very responsive and this was cleared up right away. All the amenities at a small and quiet oasis. We didn't use the sauna but will be ready to try it on a return visit.

I have left over a dozen voicemails and no one has returned my calls.

There are great common areas such as the wide front porch on the lake side that has a generous number of rocking chairs and some porch swings. There are steps down to the quiet Lake Michigan beach. Staff was helpful and friendly. Coffee was great and the quiche and fruit breakfast was delicious.

Things I liked: very clean and well appointed rooms, comfortable bed, secure keypad entry and exit, and very good breakfast. Things might be a little different if you rent the whole house, though for our stay, the kitchen was open for breakfast only 8:30-10:30 AM. But there was a coffee bar always available, with a couple tables and plenty of chairs inside and out for a carry-out meal or just to read and relax. Our host Ron was very friendly, super helpful, and offered a wealth of information about the area. Ask him about the wine trail, and he will get you pointed in the right direction. The Staymaker/ Journeyman Distillery is right across the street, so this was a great home base for walking the town, and a central location for drives to wineries and/or Lake Michigan beaches. She has mastered the art of being there when you need her while also giving you your space if you need it. The entire house had a nice, laid back charm with all of the modern conveniences that you'll need. I loved sitting on the quiet back porch, while my teen daughter enjoyed the free wifi to do whatever she needed to do. The evening appetizers and wine were lovely, and she even offered tea or lemonade to my daughter. In the morning, we came down to fresh brewed coffee and coffee cake to munch on while she made our breakfast. Nancy was the perfect host, she gave great recommendations for enjoying the area, and even gave us great tips for visiting Chicago when we left - she is a former resident.

After a few…read morehours of searching, my friend and I decided to spend 3 nights and 4 days at Lakeside Cabins Resort. The cabins have a full kitchen and the location is only 1.5 hours from my condo in Chicago. The prices were more affordable than Airbnb and Vrbo mostly due to lower cleaning fees. The grounds also have nice amenities (pool, kayak/ stand up paddle boards, volleyball, catch and release fishing, basketball, shuffleboard, firepits, etc.) We picked Cabin C62 because of its patio/deck space and lake views. The cabin is somewhat dated, but it was very clean. You do have to bring towels, linens, shampoo/conditioner/dish soap, paper products, etc. which makes for more packing/ planning but we expected this so it wasn't an issue. The sleeping lofts can be used by children or adults. I had no problem going up and down the stairs both during the day and in the evening/night. The only "problem" that we ran into was that our DVD player was not working when we tried to watch a movie the first night. We reported this to the front desk and they purchased a new DVD player and delivered it to us in a timely manner so we were satisfied. The staff was very friendly. We were able to find more than enough to do and were also able to relax. The property is very kid friendly and not loud at night or early in the morning which is exactly what we were looking for. After my rental experience, I am considering purchasing and building a new "tiny house" on the property. I've always wanted a second home, and this is a very affordable way to be able to do so nice and close to home! I plan to visit again next month with my husband for another short getaway. A+++++ experience!

Harbor Country Cabins are for those who want to camp, but don't want to do any of the work or sleep in a tent. There are all the perks of camping: serene wooded setting, grills and patio with furniture to dine al fresco, and a bonfire pit (we didn't even have to build the fire.) Then there were added bonuses: screened in porch complete with mason jar lighting and fan, koi pond with lily pads and bull frogs to ease you into sleep, your own clean modern bathroom with plush towels and nice showers, a kitchen with any utensils you may need. This place is seriously unreal with quaint, calm vibes. I left feeling incredibly refreshed, and immediately wanting to book another stay. Dogs are welcome here, and mine seemed right at home. She quickly figured out how to let herself out of the screened porch, and was happy to explore the cabin. Also it's within a 15 minute drive from the Grand Mere State Park with a dog friendly beach. This place is excellent for groups, since the price is very reasonable if you have 4-6 people stay in a cabin. I recommend Harbor Country Cabins to anyone looking for a short summer respite.

I highly recommend this place for those thinking about a family reunion, bachelor party get away, or any other big gathering of approximately 30 people. my wife recently got married. before the wedding ceremony we decided to bring both our large families together for 2 night 3 days at HCC. We worried about a number of things, but it turned out to be a fantastic family gathering. It easily accommodated about 30 of us. My parents brought there fifth wheel, and parked in the drive way. there was plenty of parking. For fun we cooked together (there is a grill, microwave) talked around the fire and we went across the street to the park and played a bunch of games. HCC has a lot of games available for guest already there. the beds were great. it's my kind of glamping - Glamorous camping. my wife and i were worried about the street and traffic noise and danger, but it didn't prove to be a problem. and lastly, Nicollete who runs the HCC, is ridiculously helpful and kind.
