Beautiful old historic Inn right across a small street from Lake Michigan. It is close to Three Oaks, MI, and is an excellent choice for spending the night if you're headed to the Acorn for a concert. We had a garden side king room, #27. The third floor room had its own bath and a king bed and it had a room air conditioner. The room was comfortable. I slept great, but my husband did not like the softness of the memory foam pillow topper mattress. There are great common areas such as the wide front porch on the lake side that has a generous number of rocking chairs and some porch swings. There are steps down to the quiet Lake Michigan beach. Staff was helpful and friendly. Coffee was great and the quiche and fruit breakfast was delicious. read more

An amazing piece of history with plenty of charm. This arts and crafts jem was just what we needed for a long weekend away. The rooms were clean, the staff was fantastic and the porch was amazing. Its 100 plus years old so you need to take that into consideration. If your new house people, it may not be for you. We made a second visit to the Lakeside Inn. It's still venerable and charming. It still gets the obsessive-compulsive strand of my personality thinking about all the upgrades I'd order up, if I had the $ and local contractors at my beck and call. But it really is a beautiful place, which my breakfast and lunch by the pond (see photo) confirmed for me. And what other hotel/motel in the area is going to give you the combination of such charm AND fine access to a private Lake Michigan beach? Great location, great old building, and a great staff. My husband and I stayed a couple nights and ours kids camped at Warren Dunes. This place makes you aware of summer vacations that used to be. Serene, Peaceful, great location, and a beach that's amazing. BUT it's like stay at your grandmas - creaky, rocking chairs, the best cinnamon roll I have ever eaten. The first time I looked into the Lakeside Inn, I was reminded of the old national park lodges in the American West. It conjures up memories of yesteryear that you simply can't find these days. It's delightfully quaint -- perhaps even rustic -- and I wouldn't want it any other way. The nice thing is most guests staying there feel the same. Check in, then saunter downstairs to visit with other guests, a.k.a. your new friends, to compare notes about nearby restaurants, favorite hiking spots, or the best antique find of the day. This place isn't for everyone. If you have to have all the latest bells and whistles and creature comforts, stay elsewhere. With that said, Sam, the new manager, has some great ideas for the place without compromising its ambiance. I am questioning the value of Yelp after reading these reviews. Some of these reviews do not actually depict the value and picturesque quality that one experiences at Lakeside. It seems that everyone expects to be waited on hand and foot and to have accommodations that fit more of a metropolitan city rather than the isolated and slow pace of what is Lakeside, Michigan. Lakeside Inn is the type of place that I look for in every new city or place that I visit. There is character instead of nylon comforters, 100 TV channels, and visitors obsessed with what is on their phone rather than the experience around them. There are no TV's in fact at Lakeside and do not expect perfect WiFi either. This is part of the charm. This is the place where you go to shut off and enjoy each other's company rather than the latest political grumble or reality TV star. If you are not one that can lay on the beach and read a book or slowly walk down the crest of Lake Michigan waves, then you do not deserve this place. This place is for those that can experience a simpler time and to refresh themselves from every day life. This is a place for those you can fall asleep with open windows and can appreciate the imperfections of an inn that exceeds all of our lifetimes. Just had a wonderful weekend at the Lakeside Inn. Room number 2 was large, clean and slept up to 5 people. Had great fun playing card games and sitting by the fire in the Great Room. Coffee made with freshly roasted beans. Attended Murder Mystery Dinner at the hotel and a good time was had. A light snow fall today added to the beauty of the Inn. My wife and I were part of a large family group. The staff was very helpful and warm. We will be back. read more

Quirky. Unusual. Picturesque. Unique. And best of all, calm and relaxing. My son and I spent a week here during his internship in nearby Three Oaks. It was the perfect "home base" for us, with great amenities, a laid-back disposition and chill vibes all around. I could work all day in the cafe thanks to ample space and fantastic wi-fi. The staff is super friendly and the optional breakfasts are convenient and priced very well. Their free coffee is roasted in-house and is quite nice. Access to the beach is via a pretty tough and steep set of stairs, but well worth the effort. The grounds are beautiful and pristine. The hotel itself is old, but in a perfect, charming "old-lodge" kind of way. I wish I could stay another week. We felt like family. And we will certainly be back. read more

Neglected gem. What might have been a charming lodge once upon a time, the Lakeside Inn has seen better days. We booked a single night in mid-November to rest our heads after visiting a few local breweries. Our room was scattered with a hodgepodge of vintage furniture, an oversized compact fridge, crooked framed photos and time-beaten lampshades. The bathroom sink was in the bedroom, next to a small table for personal vanity items-only soap and plastic cups were offered. The lobby/communal room was kitschy with plenty of reading material, board games, and a long forgotten zinnia plant by the window. The stone fireplace was as cold as the lake. A bright spot was Dave's Cafe-you got to hand it to a friendly guy who shows up in a chef whites every morning even though the breakfast room is empty. The French toast was delicious, and the coffee abundant. In the summer, when the windowed room is full of laughing, vacationing families, I'm sure it's a lovely place to be. In November, it was a somber echo chamber. We left feeling that this is what an inn looks like when its waiting to close. Forever. read more

We love Lakeside. It's an Inn that dates back to the 1900's. So if you don't like a vita get feel and prefer the holiday inn then don't come here. It's a great place to curl up with a good Book. You can choose to sit by the fireplace or on the front porch overlooking the lake. You can hear the waves crashing while sitting in the rocking chairs. They have a continental breakfast now too. We've come in the fall to enjoy the beautiful colors of the leaves. There is a path to the beach with a daunting staircase. You will get your workout there. The stairs to the beach are NOT the Inns fault as other reviewers have indicated. read more

I had the opportunity to stay here a few nights recently at the invitation of friends. This update represents my opinion and theirs. The only way I can think about reviewing the place is to take it apart and look at each aspect of the experience. SERVICE - Their isn't any. Besides making your bed every morning that is. There is no information given when you check in about amenities, use of the beach, availability of chairs, any type of food service, or recommendations for the breakfast that isn't served 5 days per week. It's only available on weekends. It is most annoying to have to travel for breakfast every morning. While coffee is provided in horrid styrofoam cups, it would not take much expense or effort, I think, to also have donuts or some fruit available. Even Super 8 (at much less a rate) offers this. And WIFI. Or to let the guest make their own breakast in the kitchen. Have cereal and items on hand, or guests can use their own. Suggest they bring breakfast items when they book. Put small refrigerators in the rooms. The sheer apathetic, dispassionate, and bored staff is probably reflective of management, since the leadership tends to set the tone. One star for service. ROOMS - I stayed here once before this time and found them adequate. This time, it was remarkable how dirty some things were. My A/C unit was filthy and the flaps did not work. Both our bathrooms were dirty in so far as tile and tub and shower curtains. Windows were dirty, too. Hallways and carpeting the same and looking even worse under the dimly lit environs. It is interesting to compare the condition of this lovely old place to another we saw when visiting the restauraunt Tosi's, which is just up the road. The main part of Tosi's used to be an old knotty pine resort, and shares the same vintage as The Lakeside. Yet Tosi's is clean, fresh and well-lighted with beautiful vintage fixtures. Even though the main room, which now houses the bar, was built in 1938, you would think it was new. You can tell that the Tosi's love their place. Two stars for rooms. AMBIANCE/SETTING - Well, four stars for sure. Situated in a beautifully wooded area, right across from the lake and beach, having a great porch with lots of rocking chairs and swings big enough to nap on, original lodge interior and great fireplace, the place inherits some fine qualities. It's a shame that the lawn and garden in front look downright sad and neglected, almost like an empty lot somehwere. A real contrast to the surrounding nature. The best part of the experience was sitting on the big porch at night, sipping wine while the sun set,listening to a story from a funny pizza delivery guy with an East Coast accent, sharing pizza with a lady and her son from Indiana, and telling stories "out-of-school." Catching up with friends. The peace and quiet here is pretty precious, but it's not the ony place to get it. And the overall value increases in November when the rooms rent for half the summer rate. Easier to overlook some things with that. If you are going to look for a place to stay in this area, you may do better, especially with a family or group, to rent a cottage. For about the same price (high season rates), you can get so much more. And it won't be that much trouble to make your own bed. Or not. read more

Just got back from a wonderful mini vacation at the Lakeside Inn. The Inn feels like walking around the setting of an Agatha Christie novel- all restored to 1920's glory; I would love to attend a mystery weekend there. Charming in every way. Not for those looking for high-end luxury but great for anyone wishing to sit quietly with Lake Michigan or by the fire. Inn staff were all lovely and helpful. My husband and I joined a couple of our friends here last weekend., and it was absolutely the perfect getaway! No, the rooms aren't the epitome of luxury, but they make you feel like you are staying in a cozy cottage in the woods, which, in my opinion, is way better than a swanky hotel The common area on the first floor is perfect for socializing around the large fireplace, or in our case, relaxing after many a wine tasting. And, just outside the front door down quite a few steps is the very serene beach! The best part of this Inn though, and the reason for my review is because I left a shirt in our room without realizing it, and the Inn mailed my shirt back to me a few days later! That is absolutely unheard of in hotels, and really is a testament to the wonderful customer service everyone provides there. So, in short, if you are looking for a serene and relaxing mini vacay with stunning scenery all around and excellent customer service, go here! Loved our stay at Lakeside! This was our first time to the area. We heard about the 2 for 1 deal and thought we'd check it out. The ambiance at the inn was very "lodge-y", everyone hanging around the common areas. Although, some guests did not seem to respect that others may want to sit around the fire and remained there for 12 hours, which was not discouraged by management. The rooms were comfortable and cozy. Rooms were not soundproof but I suppose that doesn't matter when you're spending most of your time out of the room. Bring ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. The location was convenient, lots of little near by towns with plenty of good restaurants just off the highway adjacent to the inn. read more

We spent a night at Lakeside in April 2008 - off season for sure. We checked in at the sister property, the Gordon Beach Inn and the manager was really unpleasant. There was a snafu with our reservation and she acted like she was doing us a big favor do rent us a room in a virtually empty inn! The inn was quaint in a Michigan cottage kind of way. The room was okay - pretty basic and the amenities could have been nicer (towels, toiletries, sheets) for the price of over $100. The restaurant, Timothy's, was OUTSTANDING. As good as any in the city. If you want a quite get away and aren't concerned about service or luxury, try it. read more

We have been to Lakeside Inn perhaps 6-7 times now?! We love it. We go ever year with our friends and are going to stay here when we get married next June. We went back, as promised! This time we had a jacuzzi suite! There are about 5 rooms with jacuzzis. It was perfect for tired muscles after hiking Warren Dunes all day. Romantic, too! Also, they have free Wi-Fi, so we brought the laptop and were able to keep up on some important emails and we even watched a little Hulu. The weather was beginning to turn on the evening we had planned a fire on the beach, so we just sat on the porch all night waiting for the rain. It was perfect. I won't tell you that May is the perfect time to go, because I'd hate for the Inn to fill up during that month. Part of the charm in May is that the place is nice and quite. I have no idea what it's like the rest of the summer. You all should go in June and tell me about it. read more

A wonderful early 20th century beach hotel in lovely harbor country. These is nothing modern about this place except for the free WiFi, and thats about all you need when you come to enjoy the sunsets over the lake and miles of pristine walkable beach. 2 nights for the price of one, including a good breakfast is a steal. What an absolutely lovely place! My good friend and I stayed for a weekend this winter and had a great time. Our room was quaint and cozy, the beautiful fireplaces were always lit,and the walk down to the lake was snowy but amazingly beautiful. If you're expecting a four star hotel this is probably not the place for you, but if you're looking for a quaint,cozy, historic inn with a little rustic charm this is the spot for you. Somehow the name "lakeside" isn't exactly right. The lake is on the other side of the street, more on that later. We were celebrating our 34th anniversary, and what we wanted was to sit by the lake and enjoy it. The private beach was beautiful, just like the photo shows, no one in sight for miles. However to get to the lake across the street, you had to go down this treacherous path, and about 75 stairs. Well maybe young children would find the stairs inviting, but they were so steep, we only made one trip to the beach, and that wasn't with chairs and supplies. No way could I carry that stuff up these stairs. And there were no chairs provided on the beach either. You cannot see the lake from the vast front porch of the inn. When we arrived the very nice gentleman that checked us in was in a hurry to tell us he was leaving. Felt odd, that we were one of three couples and no innkeeper. The bed was AWFUL. The mattress was so uncomfortable. The room was clean, but furnished with old dilapidated furniture. The water pressure in the bathroom, needed serious help. I thought it was a bed and breakfast, but that is only on Saturday and Sunday. Sorry but I would never go back. read more

We stayed here 2 nights for a Nov wedding. The wedding party rented all the rooms plus the house next door. The desk staff was nothing but trouble to work with: making a reservation , changing a reservation, checking in, asking for directions to a pharmacy ... I even heard them act bothered when my SIL asked for a deck of cards! Each person acted as though we were bothering them. I especially did not care for paying upon check in. The rooms and bathrooms are old, worn and poorly lit. Not what I expected for the money. The plus side is the charm and the great hot shower (in bathrooms that define dingy). Everything appeared clean, just worn. The big bright side is Chef Dave and his staff of servers (except the bartender, who has the same attitude as the desk staff). The catered food was fabulous, and the waitstaff could not have been better. Basically, eat here; stay somewhere else. I would never, ever, pay to stay here again. read more

We tried repeatedly to book this inn and their sister property for our wedding. The staff has been incredibly accommodating, taking our info, showing us rooms, letting us know what weeks the rooms are open. But the reservations have to go through their manager, and she seems to not want our business. Maybe it's because we're a gay couple. There is some reason that she refuses to book the inn for us or return our phone calls at this point. The first time we called she said she would never book the whole hotel in case there are other guests that have stayed before. If they come to the hotel and are turned away they might not come back the following year. So, save a block. We don't need to be told about that. We don't work for you. You're not training us. Since that first conversation she refuses to call us back. The staff continues to be friendly and helpful. They even tried to put her on the phone today, but she wouldn't take my fiancee's call. We have been nothing but nice and professional with her. Reading the other reviews, it appears that others have successfully booked both properties for weddings. It's very disappointing that they've decided they don't want to accommodate us. We are scrapping our plans altogether and hiring a wedding planner. Neither one of us has time to chase people around or try to figure out why they've chosen not to do business with us, when they've clearly done business with others. I have been going here for 25 years, and used to love it.. came 4x a year. Unfortunately the Inn changed hands and the new manager expects you to carry your own wood in to restock the fireplace and keep it going- too bad if the wood dirties up your clothes or if you have to suit up to go out in the cold and get the wood yourself. The staff, which once was johnny-on-the-spot to do all that, no longer pitches in. When asked for help re-stocking wood ,I was actually told "That's not my job" by one desk clerk and yelled at for making too much noise dropping wood into the iron bin by another clerk who saw me struggling with the wood and didn't even offer to help this 65 year old woman and patron of so many years. The 2 for 1 winter rate comes with bad attitudes and lots of families now bringing yelling and running kids- so it isn't the gem anymore it once was. When I took these incidents with staff to the manager, Steve, he defended his staff and said- if you want more wood you can go get it, or just dont have a fire!! Honest! Wowsa.. they just dont get the hospitality game.. so long Lakeside Inn- you have seen better days and lost your heart for customers in the bargain. I will not be back read more

My husband and I have stayed in many old and charming places all over the country. This place IS old, but absolutely not charming, unless you enjoy a strong urine smell in your room! First off... The front desk staff seem to care less about speaking to you and seem bothered by any questions you may have. Secondly...our room was dirty with sand all over the floor when we arrived, and of course, the urine smell! Third...the bathroom has 1920, spring loaded faucets ( maybe some would consider charming) which do not allow you to leave the water running to wash both hands at the same time. Also a miniature toilet! Just some other tidbits... 1. Wifi Is not accessible in the room and very spotty throughout the facility. 2. Where is the cafe? Where is Timothy's? both advertised on their website, but not there. 3. Walls and ceiling are paper thin. Hope no children on the floor above. Stampeding and screaming were not what we expected at 6:00 a.m. When rules say all quite in the main living area during the day and evening! 4. Pack light! No elevator for three flights of stairs. No place to put luggage in your room What about security? I accidentally put my key in the door next door to my room, and guess what....IT OPENED,!! Luckily i didn't walk in on a guest! Our daughter chose the Lakeside Inn as the venue for her wedding. We rented all 32 rooms and the house next door for the weekend. Connie and her staff could not have been more helpful in putting together a fabulous time for all of our friends and relatives. I also have to send out a HUGE note of appreciation for Chef Dave and his staff! Their service was outstanding and the food was incredible! Everyone at the reception raved about the steaks and salmon! We also made use of the front porch and the surrounding grounds. What a way to wind up the evening! Although we did not get to use the beach that night due to a rain storm, we did corral some of our relatives for a bonfire to toast the new couple the next night! What a wonderful celebration! I'm here right now and the guy working the lobby is rude and reprimanding us for talking at a normal noise level. Apparently it's quiet time at 11pm so you cannot even speak at all in the common area. I will never come here again or recommend it to anyone. Also the bed feels like sleeping on a rock. read more

I was concerned after reading some negative reviews of the Lakeside Inn. Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised to find the lodge very inviting and picturesque. The wood floors were well polished, and the old fashioned furniture was charming. The room was sparsely appointed but clean, and the air conditioning worked well. The beach was very close to the Inn, and the view on the shore was absolutely beautiful. The staff--Cindy and Phil and housekeeping--were very very pleasant and helpful. We stayed at the Lakeside Inn for a wedding this past weekend. We had rented rooms at both their Gordon Inn and the Lakeside Inn. The rooms are in disrepair- while clean, the showers/sink in our room drip, the mirrors are like a tiny little port window, our room had no closets or anywhere to set our bags, just a bar on the wall with some hangers. Even a small luggage tray would be amazing. All of the shortcomings of the hotel could definitely be overlooked by me and considered charming if the innkeepers were at least sweet or even just polite. It felt like every single person there hated their job---from the day clerk to the night one to the lady setting up the continental breakfast. I personally have stayed at similar places, paid prices like this and considered them charming just because the staff was nice and helpful. Each time we had a question, they acted like looking up from the paper was a chore. My husband asked for a wine bottle opener and the guy was so put out, he practically threw it at him. In the evening, the wedding party was still sitting outside having drinks and talking and the person working was belligerent, actually swearing. The only reason I know this is because from my room sleeping I heard someone yelling and swearing and the next morning I asked who it was and they said it was the guy behind the desk. I understand if you want to remain a quiet, quaint inn, but then don't host wedding parties. If having people there carrying on is not what you want- tell the bride/groom when reserving about the rules and let them make the choice. Overall, IT's really disappointing when you're in harbor country and looking forward to such a sweet old place and you end up wishing you'd stayed at the super 8 to get some standard conveniences. read more

Location is excellent and our bed was comfortable so those are two positives. Also if your looking for a rustic, historic type building to stay then this also meet that criteria. Otherwise the day staff is not accommodating, the building/rooms are dirty and Lakeside Inn have less than average amenities. We had breakfast in the cafe and the food was greasy and the eggs Benedict not edible (yes that bad). We went to use the bikes after breakfast and all the bike tires were flat. We asked about a pump for the tires and were told they have to check with maintenance. A/C in the room barely operated and it was so loud at night you didn't want it on as you were sleeping. Bathrooms were a bit above campground facilities. This has been a favorite place for my wife and I to stay over the past 7 years in Union Pier but is now off our list I believe what you have is an old tired owner who appears not to invest money back into the facilities and is tired of managing the facility. read more
