We arrived a few minutes early, and my child stepped into the pool shortly before class started. Within moments, he was kicked out in a very rude and unprofessional manner, which was completely unnecessary and upsetting. Especially after noone let us know in advance it's not allowed, but charged extra $10 (on top of the class charge) for using the pool... In addition, the facility itself is outdated and poorly maintained. It didn't seem very clean, and the pool water was very cold. Overall, the customer service and environment did not meet expectations at all. I would not recommend this place.

I asked very nicely if they could take it in the hall or common area, it's posted as a rule not to talk on the floor. He looked at me like he wanted to kill me and kept talking. Spencer, a trainer, was about 10 feet away. I asked him if he could please tell him to not take a call here. He said he couldn't. He could do it later. I said I don't understand, it would take 3 seconds to ask, you just talked to me longer than that, just ask him please. He said he couldn't, in a way that seemed like teasing, like he was tying to make me feel petty for asking. I went downstairs and complained to the person at the desk. When I went back upstairs Spencer came right up to me and said he asked him and he hung up the phone. It was obvious now he had been teasing me, because he came right up to me to try to patch it over. No one likes to be ridiculed. This is the first time something like this happened. There is a man there who stares at people. A few weeks ago he walked up to me and yelled in my face when I asked him not to stare at me. I told him to please move away from me, he didn't. I mentioned it to the spikey haired guy at the desk who said "Oh ya, he's does that a lot, I know exactly who you're talking about." Nothing has been done, and this guy continues to roam around there looking to pick a fight. They need to take care of members. Something is wrong here. I'm leaving. It's their job to enforce rules, members shouldn't have to beg them.

I was told that they had no staff available to give me a tour, however there were 2 staff at the desk. Additionally the staff at the front desk were very condescending, disrespectful and uncooperative. When we entered she seemed very annoyed. She has worked her way up from a being a non-swimmer to a strong swimmer knowing several stroke styles. For example, when she was 4 she was swimming the length of a pool while her older cousins were still using a life vest and a little timid. My siblings remarked on her ability. I have Little Flippers to thank. I appreciate how a few classes during a session they teach survival skills with the kids coming fully clothed and doing safety drills and skills. Heaven forbid something should happen, I feel confident that my daughter has enough knowledge on what to do. I truly appreciate and highly recommend Little Flippers to anyone interested.

Toward the end of a recent class, the "deck supervisor" approached my six-year-old child, while…read morestill in the pool and told her, in front of an entire pool full of children, that she "didn't do a good enough job" and wasn't moving up to the next class with the rest of her group. Then, when the kids left the pool, this same deck supervisor approached me, interrupting my consoling of my hysterical daughter and told me the same thing. She said, and I quote because this has stuck with me "your daughter didn't do good enough and she needs to stay in level 1". My daughter repeated it back to me. "Daddy, I didn't do good enough." And that broke my heart. That class is 30 minutes long. The deck supervisor could have approached me any time to talk to me privately and let me break the news to my daughter. The school could have sent us a message through their parent portal. They could have called or emailed us. But this "supervisor" chose to embarrass and belittle my daughter in front of dozens of other kids, and then again in front of the children's parents. The next day, I'd finally processed what had happened and the shock had worn off. I called the school and asked to speak to the manager. I was told he was on another call and he'd call me back. I never heard back. I called again on Tuesday and was told the same thing. He'd call me back. Wednesday and Thursday, my calls were met with the same "he'll call you back." Surprisingly, I never heard a word from the school until my wife left a negative review online. And suddenly, they care about the experience. They don't care that they traumatized my daughter to the point where she not only had nightmares for a week straight but specifically asked to never return to swim class because she didn't "want to see the mean lady." An absolutely unprofessional and unapologetic place that you should avoid at all costs.

I may only be taking advantage of 10% of what the YMCA offers, but so far, it is already WELL worth…read morethe price. The Kids Corner (babysitting) is fantastic. It's such a beautiful, bright and clean room, and the staff who take care of my kids are consistently fabulous -- a huge improvement from my previous gym which shall not be named where most of the staff didn't even seem to enjoy children. But the staff in the Kids Corner seem to genuinely care for the children and seem happy to be there! My daughter sucks on everything within a 2-foot radius, and I was happy to learn that they routinely clean the toys that have been sucked on! A couple other pluses: I love that the treadmills are equipped with live TV, Netflix and Hulu. The front desk staff are really friendly and helpful. There is a pretty wide variety of classes and I can't wait until the baby's nap schedule will allow me to partake in some! And the steam room! Ahhh, the steam room. A couple of things that I wish could be improved: 1) The parking. Though there is a TON of parking, it somehow doesn't seem to be enough! Around 10am on weekdays, it's pretty tough to find a spot. 2) The locker room is a little dingy. Clean, but it just feels old. Lastly, there is one huuuuuge plus that I didn't even know I needed: Diversity. Yes, you heard that right. Diversity. In Newton! Really! I love that when I bring my kids here, they will see people of all races, ages and abilities both as members and employees! I see people being treated with respect and care, and even just being near that makes you feel good, doesn't it? The YMCA is good for my soul, people. I'm so glad this place is here and has the mission it does. It really is a great place.
