I love the separate entrance for cats and the vet and staff were all very personable and kind!

Everyone loves to be upset. Everyone loves to write a bad review. I've taken four of my cats here to the cat clinic. Every experience I've had was top-notch. I had a cat pass away a couple years ago. Dr. Hughes, and Lisa the vet tech came out to my house to give him his euthanasia medicine. They were incredibly kind and compassionate. These are good people. I don't have a dog, but my experience with cats was wonderful. read more

We recently moved here and BBV was highly recommended by my daughters friends, who fosters dogs. Every time we've needed them they have been very helpful: actually more than the emergency vet (South Overland Park) we had to use a few weeks prior to our visit with BBV. They took the time to explain what is going on and called back with test results and got our pup started on a medicine to help him. I think the facility is good and the staff helpful. We absolutely adore Blackbob pet hospital. My dog has had multiple surgeries, and the situation he gets himself in are insane. The blackbob pet Hospital has always gone above and beyond for my dog and family. Their family type environment has always been so warm and welcoming. Will not take my animals anywhere else. I took a rescue dog her for illness after $500 no answers except he has a chronic pain condition. Scheduled follow up at time that would work with my schedule for work. Got there and stressed dog out to be told I missed my appointment by 2 hours I explained I would never schedule at that time as it is impossible with my job. After the inconvenience I decided to switch to new vet waiting to be seen I called Blackbob for refill for 2 days of pain meds so dog wouldnt have to suffer. They refused after spending that much and wasting my time and stressing dog out they have only proven to me that I made the best decision by switching vets because they dont care about anything but making money. We had been looking for a new vet and when our dog wasn't feeling his best we decided to try Blackbob Pet Hospital. They were able to get him in very quickly and took such good care of him. We couldn't be in there with him, but the doctor and staff did an amazing job of putting me at ease. They even called the next day to check on him. So thankful it was nothing serious and he's feeling much better. We will definitely be taking him back for future vet needs. read more

I started going to Blackbob Pet Hospital in 2012 when I moved to KC with my 6 year old dog, Zeus. They treated Zeus so well the entire time up through having to put him down last December. In addition to routine visits, Zeus had to have a few different surgeries, and I always felt comfortable with him in their care. Dr. Hughes, and Dr. McRell are fantastic (Dr. Bieberly is no longer there, but she was also great with Zeus)! I recently adopted a new puppy, and I have no hesitation having Blackbob as her vet and daycare. All of the staff are so sweet to her! Blackbob is affordable, and has never pushed for unnecessary services or treatments. They look out for what's best for you and your pet. read more

After over 20yrs of entrusting 4 of our beloved dogs to the care of Dr. Carita Meyer & Blackbob Pet Hospital. My family & I made a long over due decision to leave this practice. We've spent a lot of time & money under false pretenses. Over the last several yrs, every visit has cost more & more. It's like being up-sold. You'd almost think they cared more about a quota than the actual care & thought of your pet. The staff upfront are any & everything but friendly. With exception, they're having a 'good' day. It appeared that wasn't often the case. Too, I can't speak for everyone. I don't care who smokes & who doesn't. I just don't want to check in @ the front desk after an employee took her smoke break & wreaked of cigarette smoke. Most disappointing, thinking after over 20yrs you've established a rapport & trust with your vet. Who is also the owner of the establishment. I made an appt, on my unpaid time to speak with Dr. Carita Meyer, specifically. Instead, I was pushed off onto her nurse. I asked repeatedly as to why Dr. Meyer was not the one with whom I was speaking. My question was ignored & I was spoken over again & again. I was given nothing but excuses. Eventually, after much run around, Dr. Meyer, graced me by her appearance. When entering the room her lips were pursed & a stern look on her face. As if I were in the wrong, considering my appt was scheduled with her, not her nurse. By this time I was frustrated, aggravated & over listening to excuses as to how they billed my dogs procedure. She proceeds to tell me she heard me. Basically stating she couldn't be bothered with me because I didn't have an appt that could be billed. How else could she have heard me if she wasn't the one in the room...? Needless to say, her body language, demeanor, & the dumbing down her talk, spoke volumes. That was the last straw. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to know after 20yrs & 4 dogs. My family, our beloved pets, & I, ultimately were a dollar sign. Not the valued clients we'd thought. Moral of the story. If you're in search of a Primary Vet. One that genuinely cares about the health & well being of not just your beloved pet, but you as well. I strongly urge all neighbors currently taking their pets to Blackbob Pet Hospital to find an alternative vet ASAP. Within the last 4 months, I've spent over $600 between 3 of my pets, all of whom have had their own concerns but even after all that money, I was left with no answers, no plans, and no solutions. All Blackbob wanted to do was charge me another $200 to take x-rays of the recently declawed kitten (THEY declawed him manually, where as all my other cats have been declawed with lasers elsewhere, no problems). The vet also recommended I pay for him to try their red light therapy..... Pay MORE to treat complications stemming from a surgery YOU obviously messed up?!? And as for the dog who was squealing in pain constantly for weeks, they just wanted me to keep paying for prescription muscle relaxers that weren't doing a damn thing and refused to give her any injections because "you can't undo an injection" ???? Well she was in so much pain that I finally took her to the emergency BluePearl vet office where for less than $100, they gave me answers as to what was causing the pain WITHOUT HAVING TO RUN HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF TESTS. They provided me with a HEAVILY revised prescription plan to aid in recovery and also an injection to immediately help relieve the pain. BlackBob pet hospital obviously keeps veterinarians on staff that are quick to run expensive x-rays and draw blood to run expensive tests on...... But that's about as far as their knowledge goes. I'm sure if your pet is overall healthy and just goes in to get yearly vaccinations, they are adequate in service...... For anything further. Don't waste your money read more

Our dog was groomed here recently. We had a horrible experience. Her cut was much shorter than I expected and was super choppy, her whiskers were even shaved off! I've been on the fence about this clinic for a while bc of the high prices, but after this we will be going elsewhere. read more

If it was possible to rate this pet torture hospital a negative five,I would in a heartbeat. I took my Scottish Terrier in to have him groomed in July. After returning home with him I realized his skin was blood red under his coat. He was sensitive to the touch and it took several days for him to scab over. I will NEVER take my dog back and I would highly insist anybody that loves their pet, please go somewhere else. read more

We adopted a dog and the person that had her before us had lost her shot records. I called around to find out how much it would be to get her shots and if it is safe for her as the person before us said she had them just couldn't find them. They informed me that it was completely safe and would be no side effects. While on the phone they told me it would be $135 for the shots. We set a appointment when I get there with her it till then forever to come out. The last that finally came out was really nice but she didn't have anything that I had discussed on the phone except the appointment. She had to go back inside a couple of to try and figure out details. She finally came back out and said it would be $250. I informed her that want what I was told on the phone. After a couple minutes we got the price down to $185. Which I was ok with as she needed her shots. So we left our dog with her about an hour later I get a call from a Vet to talk about what our dog needs. She starts talking and the next thing I know she wants me to pay over $400 I told her I feel like you are just upsetting me. I explained to herwheni first called it was $135 then $185 and not you are saying over $400 plus you want me to put her on some treatment that is another $200 a month. I informed her I only want the shot I have talked with them about after telling her this 4 or 5 times she finally says it would be $250 I told her no it will be $185. She finally agreed. I asked her before you do the shoot this will not affect her since we don't have when she has her shots last. At this point she couldn't get off the phone quick enough but said it will not. When I got her home she was acting a little weird but not too bad. She seemed better but a couple days later she bit my nephew. After doing a little research which was hard and o should have done before i took her in. But thought the Vet would do what is best for her not just do it for the money. After doing a little research I found out that if a dog has rabies shot to close together this can make them more aggressive. Also after talking to animal control on this he informed us that this is common with dogs adopted if they get there rabies shots to close together. I will never use this vet clinic again and would not recommend them to anyone else. Felt like all they wanted was my money. read more

My wife, our English Bulldog and I recently moved to Olathe. Our pup has a history with outdoor allergies and we expected some issues with the move to a different climate. A month or so in our new home she started scratching and itching. We decided to bring her to Blackbob Pet Hospital after reading some reviews online. We have had some issues with Vets in the pasted with our Bully so we went in with high expectations. Dr. Whitacre listened to our history and helped us choose a line of treatment that was best for our dog. They called the next day to follow-up which I thought was considerate and things were improving for our dog. We have since been back for some booster shots and regular exams and the staff has always been kind to us and our dog. We have not used the boarding service here but will consider it if we are ever need to. read more

Black Bob Pet Hospital is the best! I am from California and 3 years ago I went there on an emergency basis as my dog was not eating or drinking and vomiting. She was very ill and could have died. The vet's name was Dr. Bieberly and literally she saved my dog's life - along with the wonderful staff. She was diagnosed with pancreatic inflammation and the nursed her back to health. Now, back in Kansas to help with my grand kids again my dog has an emergency. To the rescue again Dr. Bieberly worked me in and found bones fragments in her stomach and that her digestion was not working. I wanted to have surgery, but she encouraged me to try to let them pass on their own as the abdominal surgery was both painful and very serious to say nothing of the expensive. I decided to wait and see if they could get them to pass without surgery by admiting her for a few days to see if they pass on their own while she is monitored by the staff . I don't know if that will work or not, but I am so grateful that she encouraged me to try this option. They are animal-lovers who recommend what they would do for their own animals. read more

The doctors are knowledgeable, friendly and helpful, as is most of the support staff. Dr. Meyer and Dr. Bieberly are wonderful and do most, if not all, of their surgeries. They won't put your pet through any unnecessary treatment or cost. I think some customer service training might benefit the support staff. read more

I was not told when I made my schnauzer's grooming appointment that they got a new groomer. My schnauzer has been going to Black Bob for 7 yrs because how awesome their groomer was. When I dropped off my dog I was assured by the front desk I that the new groomer had experience in grooming schnauzers. I left very specific instructions on the cut. Leave skirt and beard long with tapered longer towards the paws. The new groomer (Megan) called me during the grooming and said she suggested to shave his skirt because of so much matting. She wanted to charge extra for de-matting and said the skirt would still look choppy. I was very upset with her suggestion. Perhaps she did not want to spend her time de-matting. Not wanting to argue I agreed for her to shave his skirt. When I picked up my dog the groomer had shaved him all over. Expect for the really short beard she trimmed too short and was very visible that his beard was uneven. She did a horrible job on he on side of his ears. I will never go back to Blackbob Vet. My dog was ever seen by a vet there because of their ridiculous fees and poor reviews. read more

I think they care about the animals they assist and are knowledgeable and over all are an ok vets office. I had a special circumstance that rubbed me the wrong way, take it for what it's worth. I have a rescue kitty that is fairly aggressive however declawed. He is in a rehabilitation state. I was frustrated because they would not handle him. I felt frustrated because there was no attempt to handle him.I couldn't afford to sedate him nor did I think it was necessary. I will say that they were helpful in treatment for him. Like I said not a bad vets office as far as care and knowledge but for an animal that is being rehabilitated might look for an office that has experience with behavioral issues. I personally will not go back because I felt there should have been an attempt to handle him. All of my pets are rescue pets and every single one of them have one issue or another, this kitty has more issues than the others but none the less they all have issues. read more

I have been a customer for almost 12 years but no longer. My dogs had just been seen at the clinic 3 weeks ago. The first dog started diarrhea early Wednesday. I thought it was just something that he ate. The 2nd dog developed diarrhea last night. I brought a stool sample to the clinic Saturday morning. They refused to check it for giardia without an exam and they had no appointments until monday. They are no longer interested in caring for your pets, just generating fees. They just wanted to do a fecal exam for worms which I believed to be unnecessary because both dogs are on Interceptor plus which generally takes care of most worms. I asked to speak to a vet to discuss and was told they were both in rooms. Murlen Animal clinic took pity on me and my poor dogs and ran the test--Yes it was giardia as I suspected. They also worked me in to examine both dogs and prescribed meds. The entire bill was $96.00. NO tacked on biohazard fee for each dog. The meds were just as cheap as if I had got at Sams Club. Black Bob always marks the meds up to several hundred dollars. I recommend everyone to find another vet unless you are a millionaire! read more

We have been taking our Westie here for 14 years. They are absolutely wonderful!

My first grooming experience was excellent. The second time they insisted I pay for a fecal exam before they groomed my dog even though he had this done at his vet for his annual exam. And now the third time I took my dog in and when I picked him up he was shaved and told me they charged me extra because he was so matted! Didn't they just shave him? Then they charged me 12.31 to have another groomer hold his face to groom him. I was charged $69.00 to groom a small shitz tzu dog!!! I will never go back to this place for grooming. I was charged more each time I went in!!!! read more

We've been going to Blackbob Pet Hospital for 9 years. All four of our dogs have gotten wonderful TLC throughout their lives at BBPH. We get our veterinary care, grooming and even buy our food at BBPH. The staff knows us and loves our dogs. They always go the extra mile to make us feel welcome and special. You can tell that they are pet people and they really do love animals...they don't just want us as customers to make money...they like our animals and enjoy interacting with them and keeping them healthy. They are fantastic! One recent story that really shows how they go the extra mile: Our Wheaten Terrier was spayed at BBPH and stayed the night. The next morning we woke up to a text message from "Matilda" (our dog) and a photo showing that she was happy and healing up nicely. It really made us feel good about how she was doing and it was just a very special touch. We love BBPH and highly recommend them! read more

Don't use these people. I had my 2lb 6oz poodle's knee operated on. Two years later she is either walking on three legs or limping, also her knee has bled and naturally she is in pain.. I talked to Dr Bieberly and she said it was because the suture she used was too big, but she no other options. I talked to another vet and he said that was not true that there were different sutures for different weights. The one she used was for a 30lb dog. Dr Bieberly said it would cost me $470 to fix this. The other vet states he would have fixed it for free if he had done the surgery. My vet, not any of these people, is caring, honest and fair. She should be fixing this for free. To think she didn't care enough for the pain my little dog was going through to put that first. read more

We took our puppy who had a broken leg there. They told us it would be $5000, to fix it and around $2000 to amputate it. We couldn't afford the $5000 and hated to cut off the leg. We signed her over to them. They ended up doing the surgery for $1700 and they never called to tell us. After a vet tech decided after 2 months she didn't want the puppy, Blackbob sent out a mass email to all their clients (not us) selling her for $300. I found out through multiple angry people who knew our situation and got the email. I went in to tell them I wanted her, they said they could not sell her to us for $300, we had to pay $1700 to cover the cost of the surgery because a not for profit paid for it. Why didn't they tell us they did the surgery for much less when they knew we were heart broken about losing our puppy? We have a new puppy and I would NEVER dream of taking her anywhere near this place. read more

I have been going to Blackbob Pet Hospital for years now. The staff is nice to me and gets my dog checked in and out quickly. I have done my research and other than Arbor Creek which have outrageous prices, Blackbob is in fact very expensive in the Olathe area. I have a small dog who gets groomed all the time and it costs 50-60 dollars, which is a lot for a 7 lb dog. My complaint about this place is they are very much about their money. They do have extra little charges here and there and it order to have one thing done they need another lab done and the little charges over time add up. Small charges being 40-80 dollar charges. Dr. Meyer is wonderful and personable. Some of the tech's hygiene isn't the best. They do allow piercings on the face and one gal was a little over the top for working in the healthcare field. Some of those things cross a professionalism boundary. My biggest issue is although they are always nice the front desk ladies don't register that it's a "hospital" This wasn't my dog's first surgery and won't be the last. My dog recently had surgery again and it was getting late and the nurse sent me home with my dog after an all day surgery with a sheet of paper. Really could improve their discharge process in general. The front desk lady Catherine calls the next morning and says "Hi, my name is Catherine from Blackbob, I'm calling to get your payment" Now she didn't realize I was up all night. My dog was restless, coughing, in pain and I've had no sleep and instead of saying hi, how is your dog doing it was I'm needing your account number so I can bill you. It was so disappointing and reassured my previous beliefs that they really are about your money. Yes, it is a business BUT it's distasteful. Of course the doctors will call later and follow up but come on if you work in the healthcare field learn to CARE even if you have to fake it. I'm a nurse, I know how my patients and families feel after surgeries, and the cost of surgery and the burden of the care providers and their worries and this was just overall cold and disheartening. read more

I had concerns about the health of my cat and unfortunately took him to this vet. The vet, Kathleen McRell, rushed through the examination and did not take time to listen to my concerns. She didn't even take the time to take my cat's temperature, which typically is one of the first things done when an animal is taken to the vet. She suggested that I spend $350 on a dental cleaning because this was probably why he wasn't eating. My cat had no symptoms of dental pain and the vet didn't even realize that he had missing teeth because of how quickly she rushed through the examination. The vet did not take time to listen to my concerns and was more concerned about getting money than the health of my cat. She also suggested I do over $400 worth of labs which seemed unnecessary to me because of the lack of time the vet spent with my cat. The vet even admitted she rushed through the examination. Because of the vet's casual behavior and lack of concerned she seemed to have for my cat, I felt like I had nothing to worry about and that this would probably pass. I decided to schedule another appointment with a different vet hospital that was more affordable than this one (Great Plains SPCA Veterinary Care Center). I took my cat in for this appointment and the vet there (who took her time to examine my cat and listen to my concerns) recognized immediately that my cat was in liver failure and probably wasn't going to make it. Because the vet, Kathleen McRell, rushed through the examination and did not take the time to listen to my concerns, I had to unexpectedly put my cat down. After this, I got multiple letters from the Blackbob Pet Hospital stating my cat needed a dental cleaning, or updated vaccinations, even though they knew my cat was dead, further showing their lack of care for their clients and their greediness. Learn from my mistake and take your animal to a place that cares about you and your pet, not about making money. Great Plains SPCA is a great choice! read more
