I usually don't take the time to write long reviews, but this experience was truly worth it. If you're considering coming here, I definitely recommend reading this review from start to finish because Amari and this salon genuinely deserve the recognition. I had an absolutely amazing experience with Amari at We Are Hair in Jamaica Plain, Boston. From start to finish, her professionalism, attention to detail, and warm personality made the entire experience unforgettable. I usually struggle with my hair because it's long, thick, curly, and can be very hard to manage. It's not always easy finding someone who truly understands how to work with my texture, but Amari handled it effortlessly. She made my hair look absolutely beautiful -- smooth, styled perfectly, and exactly how I envisioned it. Even more impressive, my blowout alone lasted over three weeks, which has never happened for me before with my curly hair. Amari did my hair for my bridal shower, and she also styled the entire bridal party. Everyone had different hair textures, lengths, and styles, and she handled each one with skill and confidence. Every single person left looking and feeling amazing. It meant so much that everyone felt confident and beautiful for such a special event. She's also incredible with color, and you can tell she really knows what she's doing. Honestly, the wash and blow dry alone looked like something I would expect to pay much more for than what she charges. On top of her talent, the salon itself is absolutely beautiful. I especially loved the sunflowers -- they added such a warm, welcoming touch -- and the lighting fixtures were stunning. The whole space felt bright, clean, and thoughtfully designed, creating a relaxing and professional atmosphere from the moment you walk in. Amari is talented, professional, and genuinely passionate about what she does. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for styling, color, or special event hair -- especially for bridal parties or anyone with thicker or curly hair. Took my daughter for a haircut. Staff was unfriendly. We were the first two people in the salon on a Saturday morning and no one said hello, good morning, or how can we help you. Instead, I was yelled at to pull the door closed behind me. The stylist seemed "mad" the whole time. My daughter and I were both very uncomfortable and couldn't wait to get out of there. read more

I live right down the street from the salon and figured I would give it a shot. I moved to the area last August and it was definitely time for a haircut. It was easy to schedule an appointment and everyone was very nice. But those are the only nice things I can say. I went in with pictures of what I wanted, and Kelly seemed to understand what I was asking for. But I didn't know the salon was not blow drying people's hair due to COVID. This is a crucial part in getting a haircut because your hair looks completely different when it's dry and the stylist can tweak it a little. I went home, blow dried and styled my hair, and realized it was nothing what I wanted. I frantically called around to other salons hoping they could get me in and at least somewhat correct my hair, not fix... correct. Luckily I found one, but I still have to wear my hair half up (to make it appear somewhat normal) for a few months for it to grow out some. Then I can go back to the other salon to finally have it the way I want. So if you are reading this review and are very particular about your hair, don't go here. read more

Fantastic first experience at We Are Hair. Leroy is one of the most creative and skilled stylists I have ever seen. I came in with long hair that needed a serious update and with some basic guidelines from me, he gave me a fantastic cut that I can't stop looking at! Leroy is clearly very experienced and took the time to examine the texture of my hair and how it behaves, which is why this cut works so well. You could pay two or three times as much on Newbury Street and still not even come close. I love that it is a local business as well. read more

Let me give you a bit of a background on me- from undergrad (2006) until very recently (summer o' 2013), I was that guy who cut my own hair. Call me super cheap, but it was easier to save the $40 and do it myself (and in the comfort of my own home). However, it's time to grow up (and not worry about the mistakes) and let a professional do it. I have gone to Floyd's twice (once in Boston and the other in Cambridge, both on Mass Ave) and it has always been an awkward experience. Let me back up a bit, I am on the introverted side and I oftentimes, especially after work, don't want to engage in small talk -- especially when the cut is just par. Then I learned about We Are Hair. Leroy is absolutely great; not only is he sweet, and really nice, he has a sense for style and fashion. Guys, let me tell you, as someone who has no intuition as to what kind of hair styles look good on me (I have super thick hair), it's really great to speak to someone who knows exactly what will look good factoring in my face shape, extremely thick hair, and usual (lazy) morning routine. The price may be a little more than chain places, but there's no price on quality. Pro tip(s): 1. Don't be fooled by lack of sign, these folk are located inside the tanning salon (but now at the front instead of awkwardly in the back); 2. If you are a princess like me (aka: no energy to take the train), there is parking in the back!; 3. The best and friendliest hair salon in J.P. I love my stylist, Mel...but I have also had Leroy and Richard do my hair, and they are all wonderful. And here is what I love the most about this place and these people next to their creative and styling skills...Ready? They admit if they have made an error and work to correct it. This place deserves 5 stars because of Leroy. He is an incredible stylist, and an amazing source of knowledge when it comes to new styles, color, and what looks great for you. My first session with him was last summer - I loved it! I had some color done - highlights - and they looked beautiful. My most recent session with him was last weekend, and it was like picking up right where we left off. He makes every client feel comfortable during their time, and confident when they leave. He also has a great sense of timing in terms of giving the appropriate amount of time to each person so that no one ever feels rushed. He's brilliant. I found We Are Hair on a whim - after trying several central JP hair salons, never very pleased by my experience or outcome - and had my hair done by Amari. After 4 years of looking for a more permanent salon and stylist, I have found it! Amari was professional and still so lovely and warm (gracious when I was running a bit late), honest about my various hair questions, excellent at explaining how to make the most of my haircut and given hair texture and (mommy) lifestyle, and she gave me the best haircut in, as I said, 4 years! Even though I've lived in Boston for 3 years I haven't found a hair salon that I can call my own. I've only tried 1 other place since moving here. Partially it is because I've started growing out my hair and I have a penchant for cutting my own hair - usually just my bangs but not always. I really enjoyed my experience here. I didn't go in with anything specific in mind and I didn't want anything drastic so I left the specifics up to the stylist. No special frills like a scalp massage but a cut includes a wash and blow dry/style. They recently renovated so the space is new, clean, open and unique which is partially why I decided to give it a try - visual prominence. There are other more expensive places in the area but I think for a good hair cut and a professional staff that knows what they are doing this is a great place. I will definitely be back - this may be my new salon. read more

I love this place! A friend recommended Leroy to me and he's honesty the best stylist I've had since moving to Boston. He consistently gives me the exact cut I have in mind and has advised me on better ways of styling my hair (i.e. I straightened it for years but he showed me how to take advantage of my natural wave, which has saved me a lot time when styling my hair in the mornings). I haven't had any coloring done by him myself but I saw the work he did on a friend's hair and it looked great. He gave her a custom red which lasted for a good while, and even when it eventually started to fade (as reds often will) it did so beautifully. The cost of a wash, cut, and blow out is extremely affordable for the work they do. Highly recommend! read more

I have been a loyal customer since this place opened, following Richard (owner and stylist) from another local salon. Top notch service, friendly staff and overall a highly professional salon. Love the bright and sunny new location and always receive great service. I consistently receive lots of compliments on my cut and color after I have been there and service is always consistent and highly professional. Prices have not changed for years! It is not too many places that change their schedule to accommodate a last minute haircut before engagement photos. Just a small example of how We are Hair goes above and beyond for their clients! I feel bad about the 1 star... the shop seemed decent and my haircut was with someone who is only in on Thursdays. She was TERRIBLE. Super uncomfortable wash (freezing water that she didn't notice, then too hot when I asked her to warm it up, and kept hitting my head with the spigot) and the cut was mediocre. I had to ask her to blow dry it and she clearly had no idea how to deal with curly hair. I walked out looking like I had a lion's mane. To top it off she made super offensive comments about homeless people. I'm guessing the owner and other stylists are fine but Amandys (I think?) was atrocious. read more

Leroy did my hair for my wedding reception and supported me going from color to gray and waist length to asymmetrical chin length. I've always had really great experiences and no judgment for experimenting. I've gone to previous hair dressers who were judgmental about trying new styles. He's extremely open to what you want to experiment with. I've recommended him to friends who've also had great experiences. After bad experiences at 3 other JP salons, I won't go anywhere else. read more

Love this team! I've been getting my hair cut by Katie since early 2008. Haircut is consistently great and I can count on her for an honest opinion - hair color options, cuts that will work with my finicky hair texture/low maintenance life-style/etc. Although my preference is always to go back to Katie, I am confident that if she isn't able to find me an appointment, Mel can sweep in when I need an appointment quickly for a last minute professional meeting or other obligation. No hesitation in recommending this team. One caveat, if you are looking for a one stop shop for all your needs, you will need to go elsewhere. This team is dedicated to hair (cut/color/etc.) and it's what they do very well. They don't take care of other grooming needs like mani/pedi or waxing. read more

I have worn my hair the same way for most of my adult life. It's a relatively simple slightly below my chin bob hairstyle but I have always had difficulty finding a good hairstylist who got it. Once in a while, I'd find one, and before you know it, they've had to leave the practice for personal reasons, or they become geographically undesirable because I changed jobs, or I moved. I took a chance on We Are Hair based on the reviews, and I didn't know who I'd be assigned because I didn't ask for anyone in particular. I was told when they called to confirm that my appointment would be with Adamis. When I arrived, she greeted me, and proceeded to listen to how I wanted my hair cut. She asked all the right questions, really seemed to know her stuff, and then she cut my hair. Wow! Hands down, it is the absolute BEST haircut I've ever had. She really is fantastic. I highly recommend her, especially if you have problem hair like I do. But then again, we all think we have problem hair, don't we? read more

I'm so happy I gave this place a try. I'm afraid I didn't quite understand the stylists name that cut my hair and I can't quite read the card she gave me; Adanys, perhaps? She was amazing and incredibly patient. I haven't had my hair cut correctly since I moved down to JP from Beverly a year ago. She did it perfectly. She even put up with me questioning her decision regarding the back (and I'm glad I listened because when my hair dried, it really did look just perfect). My hair looks amazing and I'm very happy. Oh, and, due to lack of sleep, I under tipped (I did the usual 'ten percent of this is X' and then forgot to double it to get 20%). I didn't realize till I was about to walk out. She didn't bat an eye and said that people do it all the time (even though I'm sure they don't). I ran down to my bank and returned with the other half of her tip, as they couldn't add it onto the card - there was no way I could leave without tipping her with my hair this nice and her being so very, very patient and kind with me. The shop itself is clean, bright, and well cared for. It's decorated with vintage images and the colors are very warm (I'm used to very stark, minimalist salons). The owner was there, giving hair cuts, sweeping up, and assuring me that they do not give mediocre hair cuts (he heard me talking about my boyfriend's experiences with other salons). I definitely recommend them and the boyfriend is excited to give them a try when next he needs a cut. read more

I came in for a trim to help me grow out my hair past it's current "awkward stage." Daniel gave an honest assessment and advised I wait until it had all grown out a bit longer before making any changes, if length is my goal. I really appreciated the honesty as I wasn't sure I should get a cut or not, and in the past when I've tried to grow out my hair (gracefully), other hairdressers elsewhere have always gone ahead and given me a cut even when it wasn't ready, slowing down my process foreverrrr (and taking my money!). Daniel skipped the immediate income for my benefit, and I appreciate it. Also I liked the space. And, the staff were very accomodating in scheduling me - we played phone tag with messages for a few days and my schedule changed, but their replies were always prompt and patient. I haven't even had my haircut here so I didn't go for the full 5 stars... maybe my next review (after I actually get a cut!) will. :) I'll definitely come back for my actual cut! read more

He was my stylist/colorist for years, I moved away for 10 years and tracked him down as soon as I knew I was coming back! I am writing to give a big shout out to Katie B. and We Are Hair!!! For almost 20 years, I used the same stylist in downtown Boston, all while living in JP. When I asked a friend with a gorgeous haircut her secret, she told me about Katie B, After my first visit with this talented professional, I've never looked back! I've been to the salon probably 5 times since I made the switch. My experience from day one has been nothing short of fantastic. Katie is efficient, warm, and knows how to compliment your best features. Can you imagine going to a new cutter after more than 20 years? Nothing to fear with Katie in charge! Trust me. You can trust her!. Why? Before she lifted a single strand, we sat down and talked about what I wanted out of the cut and the visit. She was genuine, real, and incredibly helpful. Answered all of my questions (even the crazy ones). :) The most important thing about this fab stylist for me??? I continue to COUNT how many people I've known for YEARS who ask me if I've done something "different" with my hair. "It's really, really beautiful" they say. Let me start off by saying after undergoing a makeover of its own, I love visiting this salon more than ever. The new layout of We Are Hair makes getting the best possible cut and color more accessible and maybe even a little bit more enjoyable. That being said, We Are Hair could probably be located in a refrigerator box and if Leroy was cutting hair there, I'd still be booked for my visit. I have sat in more than my fair share of stylist's chairs downtown, in the South End, and out in the burbs trying to find someone confident enough to know what I needed my hair to look like and young enough to not make me look like every other professional young woman with a flat iron. Since I started visiting Leroy at We Are Hair I don't go to anyone else. I don't have to, he cuts and colors my hair in a way that keeps me looking just the way I want to look and he's got enough versatility that when I get bored, he helps me find a solution that gets me excited again. My hair even looks good when it's growing out, which cannot be said for most layered cuts. My color is exactly the opposite of my natural hair and it's done so well that no one believes me when I flip my dark hair back and tell them that naturally, I'm a blonde. read more

Scheduled an appointment for Monday, guy scheduling me says 10am. I ask: "Are you sure that's OK, because online it says that you don't open until noon on Mondays." He says: "Yes, well that must be wrong. Does 10am work for you?" Schedule the appointment. Show up Monday morning at 10am, and am told by the Tanning salon that they share space with that no-one is there and they won't be showing up until noon. Whoops. Recently, during a power outage on Centre St., Katie cut and colored my hair by the available light from the windows. She went out of her way to make sure I had fresh color and a hair cut because she know I was leaving on a trip. Sometimes I go in with no direction, just wanting a change unsure of the details and Leroy will patiently discuss my options.
