In fact, many of the comforts you'd expect when dropping kids off with family are present here: you can never be late, every child is seen, valued and respected, snuggles are always welcome and students are taught to be a good friend to others. It's no surprise the owners have adopted three out of four of their daughters; they know what it takes to turn strangers into a family. Not sure if all these activities triggered his early milestone or if it's because he's a pandemic baby and they're built different but he's flipping everywhere from left to right at three months and is already trying to crawl! The caregivers here are some of the nicest and most caring people we have ever met. Our kids became very close with the staff and other kids here and we are really sad to be moving on. I will also note the leadership is new and the director, Ms. Nan, knows every child's name and is very warm and welcoming. When we began looking for a daycare in 2014 and we were met with many options but we went to this one because our first option was full. About 2 months after starting at south Seattle Kindercare, our first option called to say there was an opening. At this point we were not moving our kid because we saw the level of care and responsiveness that the teachers were giving them. Furthermore and most of all, the management team at this school were always available and open to any concerns we had and always resolved them when we engaged them. I will never forget looking at my wife and saying "The director here is amazing and that alone would be enough to keep our kid here!" The teachers all put in a tremendous amount of effort, and they obviously care for the children. It is also worth noting that the lowest paid staff member is now 15$/hr, which is way better than most. They have around 8 different classes, about half in the main building, and another four in portables. One of the portable class rooms is a half day pre-school, and the other three are for full time kids. Both our kids are in the full-time portable class rooms, so my review is mainly regarding those classes. All the teachers speak Spanish as their first language, and most speak English very clearly. The official policy is for the teachers to speak English in the morning and Spanish in the afternoon, although this is a bilingual school so that policy is pretty loose. There is a good mix of kids, some start here speaking only Spanish, and other only English (like our kids). The curriculum is great, I believe all the kids in the oldest class are well prepared for kindergarten. They have a great balance of free play, activities and lessons. They make the food in their own kitchen, and they post the menu for parents to see. It is of course well balanced and nutritious. There was definitely an adjustment period when we started, especially for our oldest, who was 4 and spoke no Spanish. He was a little frustrated at first, as he had never experienced being with people and not being able to understand what they are saying. He was not alone in this, as there are plenty of kids in the same situation, and plenty of kids who spoke little English. After a year, he still doesn't really speak Spanish, but he understands a fair amount, and is very interested in learning more. It is also worth noting that the class seems very well integrated. The teachers encourage the kids to be friends with all the kids in the class, and it seems to be working pretty well. The school is run out of a El Centro de la Raza, so there is a definite social justice flare here. The kids are occasionally taught about immigration and social justice/Latino concerns. This is of course done at a child's level, and I believe only happens in the oldest class, which is mainly 4 and 5 year olds. For example, my son came home talking about how some people have been taken away from their families (deported). This does not happen frequently at all, but just know that if your kids attend here, they will probably help make some big posters telling their politicians what to do. This all makes me love the school even more, but it may be a turn off for some families. Overall, we really like this place! There is nothing like knowing that your children are being well cared for.

I was on my way to work and developed a flat tire so the closest place to immediately turn into to avoid the insanity of Rainier was their parking lot. Upon me trying to quickly change my tire a woman with dark hair immediately started to yell at me for blocking potential parking for other parents even though there were plenty of spots. I explained I just needed 10 min to change it with a smile and she said she would call the cops if I did not leave immediately. We all have stressful mornings and this community has been nothing but completely supportive of me and my family. This is not the sort of energy I want around myself or my children. I will not be pursuing this place of business. To the woman with dark hair: please remember the power you have to offer someone some support when they are in a time of need and are only asking for something small. Something small that could have a wonderful impact on their day and their feeling about the community they live in, work in and support.

On the second day, I received a call that my child had opened the classroom door and exited into the hallway. Staff told me they were changing a diaper and didn't notice right away. Thankfully he was found quickly and had only made it to the first lobby door. When I picked him up shortly after, a staff member told me he had attempted to open the door several times within about 15 minutes. I asked what I could do to help prevent this from happening again and was told there was nothing needed from me and that staff would just remain on "high alert." I was also told that the center had discussed changing the door handles before but had not done so. A few days later, I received another call that my child had exited the classroom again while the class was cleaning up and only one teacher was present because the other teacher was on break. Earlier that same day there was also an incident where the children were outside playing and my child was able to walk to another classroom door and open it before being redirected. During the phone call about the second incident, the director stated that while they could redirect behaviors like not wanting to sit during circle time or meals, my child opening doors was "too much" for them to handle. She suggested we find another childcare provider and recommended a home daycare where there would be more one-on-one attention. This was confusing because the class only had about six students. What was frustrating is that all of the behaviors they raised concerns about were things we **fully disclosed during the tour before enrolling**. We explained that our child had never been in daycare before, does not talk yet, does not always follow verbal commands, and had recently discovered how to open doors. At the time we were reassured these were common toddler behaviors and that staff would redirect and work with him. There were also inconsistencies in the information we received. During pickup after the second incident, one teacher told me the situation happened while he was in her care, while earlier the director had told us a different teacher was responsible at the time. We were also told about an additional door incident that day but never received an incident report for it. I completely understand that teachers are responsible for supervising multiple children and cannot focus all of their attention on one child. However, when staff acknowledge that doors are not childproof and a child is able to open them multiple times within only a few days of attendance, that raises serious concerns about safety and preventative measures. Ultimately, we were advised by the director to find another childcare provider. We will be doing that and hope to find a program that is more willing to work with toddlers who are adjusting to their first daycare experience.
