For years my wife and I have been searching for a personal financial planner. The reason it has taken so long is that we couldn't find an individual and a company that shared our same faith based values. I'm not saying we were looking for an individual who shared our same religion. We were looking for an individual who shared our family values, who also was able to communicate clearly an understanding about our particular financial situation. Derek Miser with his associates have demonstrated a keen understanding of our needs and goals. Derek's personal attention and feedback both written and through numerous phone conversations and personal visits have made all the difference. Derek is honest, knowledgeable and an all around great guy. If my parents were still living, we would have recommend Derek to them. We have referred our grown children to Derek. That should tell you the tremendous confidence we have in him and his company.

We work with clients across Farragut, Knoxville, Tellico Village, Sequoyah Hills, Hardin Valley, Maryville, Oak Ridge, and throughout East Tennessee. We help individuals, families, and business owners simplify complex financial decisions. That includes retirement planning, investment management, tax-aware strategies, estate planning coordination, and guidance through major life transitions such as retirement, the sale of a business, divorce, or the loss of a spouse. Clients are supported by a team of CFP® professionals and experienced advisors who collaborate on each plan. As a registered investment advisor, we act as a fiduciary. Our focus is long-term. We build plans designed to adapt as life changes, not just portfolios to react to markets. For many of our clients, that means having a clear strategy for income in retirement, managing risk, and making informed decisions with confidence. We primarily work with high-income professionals, retirees, business owners, and families with $1M+ to $5M+ in assets who want to delegate financial decisions and follow a comprehensive plan. We can't say enough good things about him and all the staff at Southwestern Investment Group. Not only is he extremely knowledgable, but he has the heart of teacher and takes the time to explain his recommendations and why the recommendations would be beneficial for our financial planning. He also offers a wholistic approach to our finances. He helped us update our wills by connecting us with an attorney. His skills shine when it comes to taxes and investing. He works closely with an accountant and all investment decisions take into account tax benefits/consequences. We have been so happy with him and Southwestern Investment Group that we recommend them to everyone we know. My parents vetted him and made the move to become his clients. One of my closest friends also vetted his group and became a client. It's also important to note that Southwestern Investment Group is a fiduciary. That's a fancy word to describe that they do not get commissions for selling specific investments. Rather, they work for each individual client and make recommendations based on what's best for the client. If you are looking for a trust worthy company to help you reach your financial planning goals, look no further than Southwestern Investment Group.

As for the error, in the taxes, I have provided screenshots of emails between myself and Mary. Moral of the story do not use these CPAs, as proof by Todd's lying below and unwillingness to make things right when customers have been wronged. I used Culpepper for three years and will not be returning. The first year was excellent, but my experience declined sharply after that. In the second year, communication with Mary became difficult, she was hard to reach and frequently offered excuses for delays. Our taxes are somewhat complex, and I expect extensions, which was the case for both 2023 and 2024. In 2023, despite poor communication, we finalized our taxes shortly after the deadline, so I let it go. 2024, however, was unacceptable. Mary prepared both our business and personal taxes. While working on our personal return, almost a month later, she discovered an error in the business return and attempted to blame me, claiming I hadn't communicated a change. That change was clearly included in the information sheet we provide every year. She eventually corrected the mistake at no charge, but only after deflecting responsibility. Meanwhile, weeks went by between responses, filled with the same excuses as the prior year. She didn't file our taxes until July, over three months past the deadline. I paid the bill but raised no further complaint at the time. Later, my husband called to give them an opportunity to make things right after they charged us an exorbitant fee for both returns, plus penalties from the late filing. Instead of addressing our concerns, they refused to let us speak with anyone other than Mary. She repeatedly placed blame on me and insisted she had done her due diligence, despite the fact that I had documented the gaps in communication with a clear timeline. Nothing was resolved. Because of this, I will no longer use Culpepper and strongly caution others against doing so.

We had our appointment at the end of April and our return was not complete until early June. I found an error that reduced our tax liability by $7,000. I was told that we would be getting a letter from the IRS regarding the late filing and that I should send that to the CPA and she would request an abatement of the penalty since we had never filed or paid late before. I assumed that was part of the process that we had paid for, but then I got an additional bill for almost $200. If I had known that there would be an extra charge, I would've just called the IRS myself.
