To start, I reached out to Chef Bernard based on the Yelp reviews to see if he could prepare a romantic dinner for my husband and I on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015. He was available and agreed to serve us. From the start, he was very professional and communicated well. He sent me sample menus with options galore. If there was something on the menu that I wanted mixed up a little, he had no objections. My husband is a very 'simple' eater so I wanted to know if the Chef could also prepare something 'simple' like Potato Au Gratin. Whew....he did and it was sooooooo good! He arrived at our home in what I call his mobile kitchen (because he had everything in it that one could imagine), introduced himself to us and got down to business. We had a few small plate items, entree and dessert. He talked to us while he prepared the meals and it simply felt like he was a friend. It did not feel weird or awkward having him in our kitchen at all. It was great! He gave us tips on cooking at he prepared meals and spoke to us more about who he was (in and out of the kitchen). Some of the items we enjoyed were: 1. Pork chimichangas 2. Cajun eggrolls 3. Peking duck rolls 4. Filet (cooked to order) 5. Potato au gratin 6. Broccoli w/cheese 7. Cheese blintzes wi/ a strawberry wine sauce 8. Crab cakes Everything was perfect! He served us well and we could not have asked for a better experience. The food is farm to table and always arrive in neatly packaged containers every Sunday evening so we have dinners stocked to enjoy the following week. I have had meal services with others before and this is by far the most skilled cooking of farm to table meals. I think it's a good value. One recent review I read was really not fair about "scam". That's just not true but I understand the frustration that led to a misunderstanding. I know the owner/chef was busy and working to try improve their marketing, ordering app, and communications. It's a small business so you just have to contact her directly if there is an issue and she will take care of it. I did that every time and I was patient because I want this good cooking to last to feed my family. Seems like great people. I've spoken to her and met the staff who deliver food to my house. The sales people were amazing, be it at fairs, festivals or the in-home visits. We met with Scott, Pat and even Larry Everett himself. They were all very kind, knowledgeable and informative. We sampled the salmon and knew right away that the quality of the food was a step above what we normally got from supermarkets. After awhile, we finally decided to sign up for the service. Super fresh, high-quality items that defrosted easily/quickly just couldn't be beaten. But here is where the problems began. After we got a chance to do a more thorough inventory of the items received, we noticed that just a handful of one item was missing. Upon contacting Farm Fresh to advise them, we were met with apathy and a complete lack of desire to remedy. Seems that Al Fabian only cares about big orders and doesn't want to make small items appear as promised. Furthermore, we cooked another item a few weeks later and found small maggots WHILE WE WERE EATING it. As unsettling as the experience was, we calmly informed Al of the issue, assuming that it was but a fluke with the extremely high quality food that we had otherwise experienced. And what did Mr. Fabian do to allay our concerns? The same thing he did with the missing items. Absolutely nothing. So rather than waste any more of our time or money dealing with someone who clearly didn't want to address our issues and seemed to be a one-man customer service department, we decided to cancel the service before our first reorder. I'll end with this: Great food, HORRENDOUS customer service. If your food arrives correctly and you only have to deal with them at reorder, I think you'll be just fine -- because the food really is high quality, especially the salmon and chicken. But be warned that Al Fabian isn't in the business of servicing customers or solving problems.

I can make an exception for more casual Italian meals at only a handful of Italian restaurants, and Mamma Roma's is now one. Growing up partially Italian, and a mix of other ethnicities, my family cooks Italian better, of course, than at any restaurant. No one made better Italian dinners than my Na-na (grandmother). But Momma Roma's hummus cream rigatoni could definitely keep me coming back for more. No one made better meatballs than my Mom but the meatballs at Mamma Roma's are flavorful enough. No one made better sauce than my Aunt #1 but the sauce on Momma Roma's ravioli was good and so fresh. And no one made better cookies than my Aunt #2, but Momma Roma's cannolis and rum cookies are tasty. There are a lot of Italian restaurants in the area and I've read that Mamma Roma's is one of, if not, the best. I can only say that while my first visit here a decade ago was fine, this visit goes into my memory as "need to get back there, eventually, if not sooner," after delighting in their new menu item: a creamy hummus rigatoni with sausage. I love hummus, though wasn't really sure if the texture of hummus sauce would be too gritty. It was not. It had a lovely, substantial flavor and silky texture that was balanced well by the impeccably-cooked al dente rigatoni. Add to that the garlic, cream, sausage and herbs in this dish and you've got a winner. I highly recommend this rigatoni, of the 3 rigatoni entrees on Mamma Roma's menu. I haven't even tried the other rigatoni dishes, but still ... don't miss this creamy, garlicky hummus dinner. And the portions of rigatoni in this dish were very generous. The presentation of the lasagna was impressive, in layering and shape. I only had a bite. It had a nice flavor, but I would have needed more bites to give a better description. And since it wasn't my order, I could not indulge. The portion was generous. Also, I would never order lasagna from any restaurant given the reasons cited earlier, but this one was good. I hope someone is laughing because anyone who has grown up in a subcultural group in the US usually sounds exactly like me about the home-cooking they grew up on. Another of Mamma Roma's menu items I'd like to try is their corn and arugula white pizza. I've only found one lovely corn pizza ever at Zelo's in an LA suburb, so now that I have seen this on their menu my curiosity is piqued. Love love love the variety of the dessert menu options. It's not just the desserts in the case on display that you can order. While there are gorgeous cookies on display, the dessert menu has a long, lovely list of all kinds of variations of cheesecakes and cakes. I would like to try the lemon cake on a return visit. And more of the cookie flavors! When I asked the barista what the top desserts were, he was quick to name the cannoli as a first. You'd probably be surprised to find out that this is a counter service approach: you order and pay up at the front and the waiter brings you your food and whatever else you need. You get your own fountain drinks or tea with ice. You can tip in advance, in good faith, when you order in the beginning or you can leave cash on the table at the end of the meal, having already paid your bill in the beginning. There is also the charming dessert counter/bar and espresso area that I mentioned earlier. So, when you are finished with your lunch or dinner, you can go to the barista's counter and order dessert and cappuccino. I love that if you order cake or a cannoli, a cappuccino is only $2. This is an awesome value especially for the evening crowd. For old school Anne Arundel county and Annapolis locals, Mamma Roma's is better than the original Squisito's pizza -- and higher in quality -- but it is a bit reminiscent of that restaurant in terms of popularity and a family feel. Plus, I have never tried the pizza here, but I'm guessing it's good given the quality of the ingredients and preparations we experienced with the pasta dishes. One thing that also really stands out about Mamma Roma's is that they are the only Italian restaurant that is nestled back in the suburban Piney Orchard division of Gambrills. In other words, it's more neighborly there vs. other restaurants along the majorly-trafficked Route 3 corridor. The restaurants along Route 3 have many more transients coming in, given the ease of access, so they are naturally less neighborly. Finally, when we brought our leftovers from dinner home I set them on the kitchen table and left them for a bit. When I came back into our kitchen, it was filled with such delicious aromas! Friends, this is just how fresh the food at Mamma Roma's is. For a casual, counter service suburban, it is quite bellissima!
