Brandon the owner was attentive and receptive to our thoughts and ideas from the beginning of the project until its completion. Brandon was very helpful in his suggestions of multiple suppliers of materials we hoped to use and others we hadn't thought of. Brandon's subs were on time, courteous, communicated with us on what they were doing and projected completion times. We have a large space for the extra materials bought, so that wasn't an issue for us. Using an outside sink area and an office for our temporary kitchen worked out well, as Brandon said the living room didn't have the wattage necessary for the use of a microwave and other appliances we wanted to use. We hope to use Nikao Construction in the future, for their craftsmanship, their integrity, availability via phone or text, and for their sense of humor.

We did a major remodel, which included adding an entry to the house and renovating almost the entire bottom floor of our mid-century daylight basement. The design process was a pleasure: Clarkbuilt's in-house architect understood exactly what we wanted and worked with us to refine it until it was just right. Demolition was handled with great care. The workmanship on every aspect of the project was first rate. Everyone who touched the remodel, whether Clarkbuilt employees or the subs regularly used by them, was a perfectionist. Throughout, it was extremely important to all involved that we were completely satisfied with the work. And if we wanted something changed or modified, it was done cheerfully. Everyone at Clarkbuilt has a can-do attitude. Of particular note is Clarkbuilt's mastery with woodwork. A major part of the project was the creation of a library with built-in bookshelves, a window bench and a nook beneath a stairway. Clarkbuilt managed to realize our vision and make it even better. Their carpenter worked closely with us to adapt the built-ins perfectly to the space, and the result was stunning. In a major remodel, you expect surprises and unwelcome developments. I hired them to do a seismic renovation to bolt my house to foundation (1922 house with a fully finished, carpeted basement). Their bid was in line with most others, and I chose them because I trusted they could put the basement back together again the best. Well, right around when they were finishing up, we had the INSANE 12/7/15 rains in Portland and my basement carpet was soaking etc. Even though it was not technically what I had hired them to do, I called Soren in a panic and he sent over 3 people to get that carpet and rug pad out ASAP (so there wouldnt be mold). Then I went out of town for 2 weeks and he was great about staying in communication and a couple times there were heavy rains was nice enough to send someone over to check on whether there was any further water intrusion. I liked everyone on his team - very trustworthy and hard workers and I never felt uncomfortable being alone in the house with them. Other contractors are hard to get a hold of but Soren is super accessible via text or phone. They finally finished up yesterday (there was a delay due to the water situation and I decided to waterproof the basement) and I was anxious to get on Yelp to give them 5 stars. If I ever need anything done to the house again I will be calling Clarkbuilt.

Had a structural engineer tell me they didn't put a header on. If I hadn't gotten that inspection there could have been serious structural issues in the future. As a result of that inspection I had to undo some of the window casing they put on, which I specifically asked them not to do. The casing was cheap plastic material that they glued on. I had to cut it off with a Dremel. Lastly the wall of the lightwell they put in is already cracking after less than 2 years. I wouldn't trust these guys to fix it even if they offered to.

I paid more than we agreed and got less than we agreed on. They didn't do things as I asked, they…read morescrewed up a couple of things, some of which they would not fix because it'd require them re-doing a shower wall. Now I have a shower that doesn't meet my needs as a disabled person. On the other hand, they showed up reliably and did the main job. Working with contractors in this town has been on the scale of disappointing to a total nightmare. These guys were on the disappointing end. I felt a bit duped and cheated. I have to use the thing they renovated daily and the fact that it's not how I asked them to do it makes it physically difficult for me daily. All this despite paying more than we originally agreed (they added costs midway through, the point at which I had to agree in order to finish the job). I've had to have others come in and correct what they could, but the main problems with the work can't be fixed unless I pay another ten grand to have it all re-done. Initially I was happy to have someone show up reliably and work (that's how sad it is trying to get contractors here) but as time goes on I regret not being more dramatic about my feedback for them along the way, because they didn't listen to me as it was and I basically wasted my extremely limited funds on an incorrect job that I can't afford to fix in my remaining life.

Pre-purchase inspection had shown the house would benefit from some structural and cosmetic work, principally due to its age, and the normal deterioration any wood structure is subject to. Alan Pierce thought through his bid carefully, and gave me clear advice, telling me what could and could not--realistically--be accomplished. This was accompanied by a fixed bid in writing. Payment was made in three parts, the final payment being made only when all work had been fully completed to my satisfaction. We went over the bid by just $400, a choice I made to do some additional strengthening work in one area. Alan and his team always arrived promptly, usually at 9am, and worked until 5pm, Monday - Friday. They worked to keep the property as clean as possible, and I was impressed that they followed proper Oregon DEQ safety practices. The project took about three weeks to complete. I was able to see first-hand the work Alan's crew performed, and felt that without exception they were excellent craftsmen who did careful and precise work. Alan also took before and after photos of all the work completed. Overall, I would unhesitatingly recommend Alan and his company Revive Works for residential remodeling. Both as individuals and as an organization, I found them knowledgeable, easy to work with and highly proficient. In a word, they were trustworthy, something which cannot be said of all companies operating in this field.
