The office is relatively new and convenient for me. There is plenty of parking and a short walk in and up one flight. There is hand sanitizer in the lobby. Mask are required. The staff is friendly and competent. They have entered all my data that I sent electronically a couple days prior before I arrive. I am handed a clip board to fill out additional info. The waiting room is small and packed with patients. It is impossible to social distance. But, everyone is wearing a mask and friendly. The wait is generally long (an hour) as Dr. Schmidt is a talented and popular surgeon. People check in and check out at the same window, so the small waiting room gets congested and uncomfortable at times. All reading material has been removed due to COVID.

But because everyone that I have had contact with, has handled me and my situation with so much compassion. Some even going above and beyond to make sure I received proper care. 2 years ago, I developed Cat Scratch Disease after being bit, trapping a feral cat. My family doctor dismissed me, an ER doctor misdiagnosed me, and a surgeon decided maybe it could be cancer. I was sent to the breast center for a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy. After the biopsy showed whatever was going on with me wasn't cancer, the surgeon also dismissed me and said I should just be thankful it wasn't cancer. No one would even test me for Cat Scratch Disease and made me to feel like they thought I was just being a hypochondriac. A nurse from St Vincent Breast Center called me a few days after the biopsy to check on me, and I broke down crying and told her about how horribly ill I was and how dismissed I felt by all the doctors who had "treated" me. She promised to do everything she could to help me be heard and my medical issues addressed. This nurse personally took it upon herself to go and ask a pathologist to look at my biopsy results. The pathologist said my results looked like Cat Scratch Disease to them and I was quickly sent to a Disease Specialist. Because the illness was allowed to hang out in my lymphatic system for so long, I eventually had to have a lymph node removed, a year later. Now, another year later, I'm having pain in the same area again. So my new primary care doctor ordered a mammogram. When I called St Vincent Breast Center to schedule my mammogram, the woman helping me quickly noticed that my order had been written incorrectly. My new primary care physician had just ordered a general routine mammogram. She insisted with the complications that I was having and given my history, I needed a 3D mammogram and an ultrasound of my underarm. I am so thankful that she did this, because it was during the ultrasound that they discovered one extremely large lymph node that needs to be biopsied. My doctors office said that St Vincent Breast Center contacted them immediately with a request for a new order. Every time that I've been to the St Vincent Breast Center, I am always impressed with how every single person you encounter is very polite and compassionate. Not just the techs and the doctors, but also the women who help walk you from one place to the next and stay with you until the doctor comes in to talk to you. The women who check you in, deal with your insurance, make your appointments...stellar. What a relief to know that Indy has St Vincent Breast Center.

After being…read moremisdiagnosed by several doctors for 3 months, it was then suspected that I may have breast cancer. I was sent to Dr Tigges with my mammogram and ultrasound results. On our initial consult, I reiterated that I highly suspected that I had Cat Scratch Disease or maybe the illness had helped bring awareness to the other masses found. He dismissed my concerns and ordered biopsies. Within hours of my biopsy, I became violently ill again. Things had just started to improve in the weeks leading up to the biopsy. I was sick enough and also in so much pain, that I became scared. Dr Tigges office asked me to come right in when I called, the next morning. A nurse quickly concluded after examining me that something was going on and that I needed an antibiotic. But when Dr Tigges came in to discuss the nurses findings, I was mortified at his demeanor towards me. I was so ill and weak that I was tearful. He actually laughed and said my "idea" of Cat Scratch was silly and that even "if" I did have it, I didn't need an antibiotic for it. He insisted my body would fight it naturally and antibiotics could actually "harm me further." He went even further to say that my results had come back non cancerous and that instead of crying, I should "be thankful," and sent me on my way. Later that week, I received word from a nurse at the breast center that a pathologist had looked over my biopsy and diagnosed it as Cat Scratch Disease. I was referred to a specialist who actually addressed it and prescribed the proper antibiotics. Fast forward a year. Suddenly, out of the blue, a huge mass forms quickly and painfully in my armpit. This is after a year of going thru spells of not feeling well and my armpit just aching...and being told everyone was done all they can. I get right in to the specialist who helped me before and he immediately insists that I need to go back to Dr Tigges for lymph node removal. No matter how much I insist that I do not like Dr Tigges, my doctor insists that Tigges is the best when it comes to issues with the lymphatic system and breast cancer, in the area. I suck up my pride and do as instructed by a healthcare professional. Long story short, this illness that Tigges insisted that I didn't have? I'd had it so long without the proper antibiotics and medical treatment, the lymph node had been destroyed. A secondary infection then eventually formed from the dead tissue. Tigges scheduled me for surgery quickly. Also, at this appointment, I was asked if it was ok for a student to be allowed into the room. I really didn't think much of it. But during the exam, when he was examining my breasts, he instructed the student to feel a spot he'd found in my breast, without asking for my consent first. I was awake for surgery and wish I hadn't. Tigges largely ignored me and chatted with the nurses about whatever. There was a nurse charged with sitting at my other side to monitor me. At one point, towards the end, I warned the nurse that I thought I was starting to have a panic attack. Dr Tigges chuckled and said, "Don't do that. You'll make ME have a panic attack." I began sweating and shaking uncontrollably and became to weak to even speak. The nurse was to busy talking to the doctor about something completely unrelated to even notice. Another nurse finally noticed and began trying to get my attention and a response from me. I found it so odd, the way everyone carried on around me like I was unconscious...yet, I wasn't. At my follow up appointment, Dr Tigges expressed shock at how well my incision was healing because, as he said, "it's a hard area to heal." He never once warned me of this before or after the surgery, nor gave me any special care instructions. I figured out on my own that wearing cotton, form fitting tshirts were the best thing I could do to keep the area clean and dry. Another year has passed and I've had trouble with a lymph node in the same spot. I ended up having a biopsy at the breast center in Carmel and no one that worked with me even knew who he is. So he can't be as good as my Infectious Disease doctor says. If I were a woman seeking a surgeon skilled with the lymphatic system, I would look elsewhere. I found Dr Tigges to be extremely arrogant and cold, at best.
