I was in here to take an elderly family member to Emergency last week. The triage nurse was very friendly and we took a seat in the waiting room. There was a TV monitor that said how many people were being treated and how many were waiting, along with the waiting time to see a doctor. It told us 90 minutes but we didn't see a doctor until about 3.5 hours! Once we did see the doctor, things moved relatively quickly with an X-ray being performed. Seriously??? My sister was sent here by a GP who said she was severely dehydrated from bad reactions to meds...doc said she needed bloodwork and fluid IV immediately! she spent over 4 hours there to be told no IV needed! No blood work done! She was told to take Imodium and BRAT diet...doc did NOT know what the A stood for...duh...applesauce!! She left without any proper care...what a waste of time Had to explain why leaving and then they brought out nurse for bloodwork told needed to wait another hour for results!! Too sick to wait more than 7 hours!! A sign says Scent Free but no one enforced it and the smell of perfume was sickening Horrible horrid ER!!! read more

I had to be there in September and October for cataract surgery. I found the staff exceptional from the greeting to the volunteers to the actual pre and post op team. Everyone was extremely efficient and caring. Well done!! read more

This is an old, old, dinosaur of a hospital. You can tell as you immediately walk in. My dad had his cataract surgeries here. You can tell it's old by not only the old looking walls and floors, but also the poor signage and infrastructure. To register for cataracts you have to go to a pre-screen area that isn't obvious and then you have to go to the other end of a long hallway for another prep area, but you don't know which room is which since they are all jumbled together. There are two recovery rooms where the post op patients go. Then there is the room where the nurses take the patients vitals and get them changed into hospital gear. Then there is the waiting room. So you ask a nurse who is clearly busy and she'll take you where you need to go. The cafeteria is old but it serves some food like hot dogs and chicken fingers. It seems like it really isn't for patients and their families but rather for staff. The food isn't very good but it'll do the job. read more

I was in intensive care for 4 days.I got excellent care. The nurses were great. I had no complaints. I would not hesitate to be in the hospital again if needed. read more

Our visit to the emergency room to repair a cast was OK. The hospital is clean, well lighted. However, the main entrance to the hospital was blocked off for the weekend making walking to the hospital a trek in icy conditions. Then we were met by the Triage nurse in the emergency room. Her name tag said SuAnn, who, just because we had white hair, chastised us in a very patronizing and rude way because we did not have a list of prescriptions with us. We did have a USB drive with all the information on it - she nastily said that this didn't do her any good. She then proceeded to rant on about carrying that information on your person at all times. She kept coming back to the same topic, chewing us out. My husband finally told her that she had already said that several times and we heard her, that we had called and asked what to bring with us and no one said to bring the medications list! And that we were not deaf and understood her issues. She couldn't believe it when we reacted negatively. She said we shouldn't get mad at the way she treated us - but quite frankly, rudeness is never acceptable! She just wanted to chew someone out and thought because we were elderly, she could get away with it! This was inappropriate behavior and we were afraid that our whole experience would be this negative. However, the ortho-tech, Norm, was professional, thorough, efficient, and repaired the cast in no time! He was great - and the surgeon on call even stepped in to make sure everything was Ok! We only had to wait a couple of hours - which we felt was fast considering our health need was not life threatening. It is people like Norm that make a hard time bearable and people like SuAnn who add insult to injury! Just a few kind words (or unkind words) can really impact perceptions! read more

ok so i injured my self pretty badly in a sledding accident so i went in to the er because i felt it needed xrays and since i had broken my scaffoid bone before i thought it was the same thing which the er doctor on call (who said his name really fast) pretty much confirmed so i was given a fibre glass splint to wear for a week. he also said that if by chance that it is still sore then to come back and get my hand/wrist re-xrayed as it may be a break to the scaffoid bone and they apparently dont show up when there is swelling to the area.. the first week i was there it was a male-doctor who saw me, (as above) i was there for only a few hours. the second week i was there for more then 7 hours which was horrible , there was a few people with sore legs, and this older lady who was seriously ill and vomitting up bile.. she was apparently in the night before, diagnosed with a hernia and sent home (and only diagnosed with x-ray...good for breaks and not a whole lot more) the vending machines were out of order, and so were the change machines.. and of course no staff had change... so no eatting of food other then that i brought in with me, and what my boyfriend had gone to get me. after a few hours i get seated for a long wait in the gurney beside the triage nurse (only a curtain divides the 2 areas) and it was way to loud to even attempt to have a nap (by this time it was close to 3 am) so i wait awhile the doctor finally comes in looks at it feels around in my wrist then says to me that the only thing she can offer is to re xray it... i even told the triage nurse thats what i needed when i went in there and she was a rude little S.O.B who refused to get some elderly woman a drink yet other nurses did and they even smiled. the xray technician was extremely nice and when she was reviewing the digital copy of my xray it seemed that she saw something on then by the way she was acting, however the doctor came out after there were done and said that there was nothing there, then she wanted to look it at my wrist over again this time she was squeezing my hand a few different ways for testing and telling my to squeeze her hand and and that i could go home, she was asking if i was taking something so i told her and she said i could take 3 extra strength ibuprofen even though the label says 1. she then wrapped up my hand in the old bandages from last time even though it is physically falling apart, and she even made a comment on how ratty they are and how sharp the fibre glass bits are even with the packing tape that i had to put over it! read more

My daughter(aged2.5) unfortunately went running down the hallway with her brother who bumped into her sending her flying into the corner of the wall!OUCH! The corner of the wall split her eyebrow open and her lip..OMG:( It was horrible looking.....took her right to the hospital and waited 7 hours in the waiting room. Had my son with me too and he fell asleep in a chair and my daughter fell asleep on my lap sitting in a rocking chair where my back and butt became so sore and numb, and got a headache sitting there for so long.....then finally got called into a room where we waited over a hour for the doctor...and then she got stitches (which took 10 mins) We got home at 2:30am. My complaint with Welland General is ALWAYS the wait...they really need to do something about it read more

I am new to the niagara area and am used to the emergency care in toronto. I recently went to welland county general to have my stomach checked as i was in quite a bit of pain. i suffer from endometriosis and fibroids. When i told this to the doctor in the er i was left to wait in the waiting room for over 8 hours. finally they asked me to leave a urine sample and put me into xray. Before i was put in xray they did not ASK or check my results to see if i was pregnant i had to ask the xray tech to check first. Then after waiting another 2 hours the doctor came to the conclusion that it "must of been an episode of your endometriosis, go home and take advil". I was still in pain and decided to drive all the way to toronto to my specialist. I was given an ultrasound and was given pain medication. A day later i find out i have another condition adenomyosis and a sist that burst. Had the hospital just done an ultra sound they would of figured this out. thanks for wasting my time. read more

I am quite surprised to read the health logo under the Niagara health services :"Extraordinary Caring, Every person, Every time"after my sister's visit to the hospital last week. I do understand that there are sometimes conditions of work that take their toll on good people... but this is utterly inacceptable. My sister Flo is in her 83rd year and is very meek but still in a very lucid state. She was brought in by ambulance because she had a severe COPD flare up and had a touch of pneumonia. She had to receive care from the urgency unit for three days and night. he had a lasix treatment that induces a lot of urination.The night staff (especially the head nurse) from October 16th to October 19th was not caring, at any time! My sister was "forgotten" on her bed pan for 2 hours, was ignored despite ringing the bell several times and left to lay in her own urine for several hours during each night. Does that sound like caring individuals to anyone that would deny dignity to an incapacitated patient?If they really were too busy to attend her needs, would adult diapers not have been more humane or a simple catheter? She was talked to as if she bothersome, unreasonable and totally unimportant. I have never seen my sister so humiliated, so broken and so disillusioned. She tried to report the abusive behaviour to the doctor only to be treated even less kindly by the same staff night after night. She is now at home but far from recovering... I still wonder realistically why people with no compassion get into that service. Very disappointed and upset! read more

Worst hospital in Niagara. Not enough staff. Never had 1 good experience here. Save your time and go to St. Catharines.

Nursing care was outstanding, floor staff were friendly and the doctors attention to detail was superb for my mom who was admitted with complications from a fall and COPD. Thankyou read more

This may be an old hospital, but the workers are up to date. They are very informative and helpful. Thanks for all the hard work you do to make a persons life more comfortable. read more
