This is my neighborhood liquor store. What I love about this place is that someone will always greet you, and 9/10 someone will ask if you need help when you're in the aisles. I happen to love a cheap Spanish wine that no one carries. I jokingly asked if they could order it for me and they were like "no problem!" I assumed there would be stipulations to this; I'd have to buy a certain amount of bottles etc. but that wasn't the case (no pun). I ordered 6 bottles and went on my way. A day later I received a call from them saying that if I did order more bottles it would be cheaper, which makes sense, but they would also provide a 20% discount on their end if I went with a case instead of the 6 bottles I originally ordered. SOLD! 2 days later, my wine was in. I was so impressed with this type of service. They went out of their way to place a special order for a wine they don't even carry, and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. To top it off, they carried the box out to my car for me. This is truly a welcoming business and I love that they're only a mile from my home. read more

Please be aware of the quality of the product the store sells. I've been a customer since I moved in the area and bought couple bottles of organic Spanish Cava. When I pored it , I had a piece of the very sharp glass was in my wine glass. The bottle wasn't broken, I checked it all. I went to store, simply to say to check the bottles because someone could've gotten injured and got very rude response. Never again I will go there and will be seeking help through the BBB. I wasn't asking for refund or wasn't complaining and I do not think any proud business owner ( especially since he mentioned he been in business for 28 years) should treat customers with no respect. read more

Wells is my new wine store and I am so grateful for having come across this charming neighborhood gem. Wells is clean, has wide aisles and a friendly vibe. They sell products supporting local businesses, such as baked bread from a nearby collective kitchen and Zeke's coffee. The staff are knowledgeable and genuine. I had been going to Total Wine, but I just could not take the corporate atmosphere any longer. I began dreading going there because of their congested parking lot and relentless push of sweet wines. The prices had been hiked and I felt like I was being ripped off because the products were substandard. So, after a bit of research, I ended up spending a Friday evening at Wells where I was treated with courtesy and patience. The wines were offered at honest prices. Also, it felt great to support a true local business. I am so happy with the wine and the service. I cannot wait to go back for another positive experience. I'm spreading the word. I have been a customer of Wells Discount Liquors for 40 years and have never had a bad experience. They have an excellent selection of beer, wine and spirits and their staff is incredibly helpful. Another posted complained about armed guards being on premises. I have no issue with guards whatsoever as it ensures a safe environment in which to shop. That same poster complained about price gouging. I shop many liquor stores in the Towson area and Wells is as price competitive as any liquor store in the Baltimore area - lower on some items and higher on some others, but not gouging. The staff is very knowledgeable and will not steer you wrong when asking about what to buy and why. I highly recommend you stop by and see for yourself. read more

Wells is a good blend of old-school neighborhood store, eclectic inventory, and helpful staff. It's a large shop with a wide variety of beer, wine, and spirits. In particular, their beer selection is stellar, with lots of micros and imports that are difficult to get at reasonable prices. The wine selection is decent, with the main shelves holding the expected regions and brands in their more affordable incarnations. The "wine cave" off to the side holds the mid-priced and collectible French, Italian, and California vintages. The wine staff are always willing to help oenophile and novice alike. Another Wells highlight is their selection of single malt Scotch whisky and small-batch bourbons. A lot of their wine guys are also pretty knowledgeable about their spirit selection, as well. Prices are average - some good, some so-so, some easily beatable elsewhere. It's busy on the weekends, but parking is plentiful in the adjacent lot and nearby strip mall. Though the title might give a newcomer to the area the impression that this is some sort of odd little discount store, Wells Liquors is a super-mart that has an amazing choice range of all sorts of alcoholic specialties. Wells wine selection is seemingly endless--as a bonus, there is even a separate wine cellar area! Their beer selection is top rate as well, ranging from yummy Belgian beer to the more typical foreign and domestic options. In addition, Wells stocks port, cognac, vodka, rum, etc. with some surprising breadth of choices. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable, offering helpful recommendations upon request--or if you daze into the distance for a moment too long even if not appearing otherwise lost. Wells is open until ~10 pm six days a week (yes, missing Sundays, unfortunately) and is typically open during the agonizing are-they-or-not pre-holiday periods. I'm probably not really qualified to adequately review this place because I always get the same thing-the 1.75 liter of Rikaloff vodka (!) Hey, I don't drink it straight, I mix master it with fine fruit juices from the orient, masterly pour it into my Felix The Cat mug, and enjoy--But enough about my ghetto cocktails. Seriously though, this liquor store is always well stocked, and the managers are helpful with arranging for boxes and carrying large purchases out to ones car. I've never had trouble finding wine I wanted or the occasional cider or dark ale. I've never had to wait in line long, even on St. Patrick's Day. Wells is not as cheap as the mega liquor stores like Beltway Fine Wines, but then again, Wells is right on my way home from work. Need I say more? read more

This is a place that has a pretty good reputation among beer geeks but not a place I would regularly visit. My initial feeling upon walking through here is that the place is overstocked and poorly laid out. There were at least a few times while here that I felt for sure I was going to hit into a glass bottle and break it because there's just stuff stacked everywhere. Pretty good selection though but inferior to Perfect Pour. Prices were average, not great, not terrible. If this was closer to me I'd probably visit it more but as of now the only way I'd go there is if I just happened to be in the area. read more

This place has an amazing beer selection. I am looking forward to trying all their doppelbocks. Also, they have my favorite DuClaw thing in bottles, which I haven't been able to find elsewhere. On their website, you can check to see if they stock an item before going--which is very convenient, especially for those of us who have developed an extreme distaste for just calling and asking in this, the age of the internet. I bought two bottles of the same wine and opened them within days of getting them home. Both had gone bad. Wine crystals on both corks, a picture of the sediment lining the bottle neck, and my representation that the wine tasted terrible were not good enough for a $30 refund because I had poured out the wine. Rather than an apology that the wine put a damper on a family holiday meal, I got a lecture as to how sometimes the wine can still be good despite crystalized corks and visible sediment. Wells is usually the go-to place for purchasing most of my wine, cider, liquor, etc. For one thing, it usually has the lowest prices around which is nice. I love that they always say hello when you walk in. For such a big place, you get the feel that they appreciate your business. And the cashiers are always friendly, particularly the young woman- I don't know her name but she has cool dyed hair....Sometimes, though, I think the floor staff needs improvement. It's hit or miss whether they actually seem as if they are happy to help. I get that liquor stores are busy and hectic but one guy was rather rude. You don't have to be snappy! I'm giving you business! I'm in love with the wine selection at Wells. So many choices! Whenever I buy wine here, it's never a quick stop. I'm also very impressed by the local wines selection- I had a great Boordy blend last time. Wells is a top-notch liquor, beer, and wine shop. They sell all of the above and many accessories in their large store that straddles the city-county line. While I don't know a lot about wine they sure do and have plenty of people that can help you find a bottle that's right for you, at the right price. I drink beer, and lots of it, and not the crap you're probably used to, e.g. Bud Lite, Miller Lite. I like craft beers, the ones that cost $15 for a four-pack. If you're like me and are into this genre, Well's will put your right in heaven. They have three or so big aisles dedicated to beer from all over the world, in multipacks as well as by themselves. Their prices are good and their service in the beer section is good as well. They also have a bunch of stuff cold at the same price as warm. As for liquor, I dabble, and they have a bunch. Practically anything you could think of they seem to have in this department. Now, if you're under 21 don't bother because there is always a uniformed police officer in the store and he won't buy your fake for a second. Also, due to silly local ordinances (AKA Blue Laws) this and all liquor stores are closed Sunday. It's a great place. read more

Wells has a huge selection of beer, wine, and liquor. I am mostly a beer drinker, so I definitely appreciate the selection here. There are lots of singles of craft brews and a ton of imports, and I have tried a lot of interesting beers from Wells that I have seen very rarely at other stores of restaurants. I do not know as much about wine, but they sell a lot of it at Wells. The staff is very knowledgeable and I always feel comfortable asking for suggestions on what to buy. The last time I went in, I needed a dry red wine to make bolognese with, but I also wanted it to be a good drinking wine since I would only be cooking with a small amount. I asked one of the sales clerks. He asked me what I was cooking, what kind of meats I was making it with, and how much I wanted to spend on the bottle. Then he showed me a bottle that he thought would be a good choice and explained to me why he picked it. It turned out to be great for cooking and for drinking as well. The store also has a lot of snack items, mixers, and small novelty gift items. The selection is what keeps me coming back though. We bought a case of Newton wine and took it home, not checking the entire case. When we were down to about 6 bottles that would fit in our wine rack, were moved them, only to find one bottle had been switched out to a cheap bottle of wine. Clearly there is some bait and switching being done here. If you buy from them, check and make sure you get what you ordered. We were naive.The entire case came from Newton in this country and we trusted the wine store. The substitute bottle was a cheap bottle of Italian wine. They didn't have what we wanted, but one of the staff members approached us and asked if we needed help. After showing the employee a picture of the wine that we were looking for, he directed us over to some wines that were similar to what we wanted. After we decided which one we wanted, he brought us a bottled that was already chilled so we could enjoy it as soon as we got home. The wine was a hit! This is where I shop for most of my beer and wine needs and it has everything I need. Wells carries a great selection of beers imported and domestic and even though I drink mostly imports its nice to have options. I have no complaints about their wine selection either it's varied and large. They have the fanciest wines I could ever want and also some simple daily table wines at great prices. I went looking for a particular California wine I read about and they had it in stock. They also have a selection of Maryland wines which is nice if someone is coming in from out of town. Wells also has really good service at least for me. They try to help you find what you are looking for and don't mind giving you some pointers if that's what you need. Sometimes I think it might be nice if they carried more gourmet foods and stuff so I could make less stops but as far as the beer and wine it's as good as can be expected. The prices are right too.
