When I said I felt it was still going to be an issue of length she said "well don't blame me if they shrink." Extremely rude behavior. I bought a pretty cheap, but good-looking, 3-piece suit online for my 6yo son, but it arrived huge! Wendy altered the suit and trousers for a wedding that summer, having suggested to leave a bit intact so the growing kid could wear it again. And sure enough, I went to her the following year to alter it again for another wedding. Beautifully done both times. Wendy is very kind and running her business out of a cute little back house at her home in Berkeley. She has been consistently open during the hours posted on her website and it's easy to drop by without an appointment. She also has a very sweet dog named Moonie (I think). I had a bridesmaids dress by Birdy Grey (two layers - chiffon and polyester) hemmed for $85. Wendy was very vocal about how poor quality some brands are, particularly Lulus, and how she must charge a high amount to hem even the cheap quality dresses. While I understand this, I also understand why some customers choose to go elsewhere to avoid paying more for tailoring than they did for the garment. Two pants that I wanted to get hemmed would have been $28 each so I opted out of that one, considering I didn't pay that much for them. Overall, I'd say you should expect to pay at least 25% more here, but she does a thorough job. read more

Wendy was amazing! So quick with the alterations I needed to my bridesmaid dress for an upcoming wedding. I needed the length shortened and she did that and even offered to adjust the draping of the material in the front to make the dress look even better. I've been to Wendy and I won't be back primarily because of her demeanor. I came to Wendy this most recent time because I had a dress made (not by Wendy) for a family event and it needed some light tailoring. For clarity, this dress needed one strap sewn down that was coming loose, and another strap that was intentionally not sewn down because it needed to be tailored to my body - so two straps to be sewn down. The entire time I was with Wendy, she badmouthed the designer, claiming the dress wasn't well made, why wouldn't the strap be sewn down, etc. I'm not saying she can't have an opinion, but I didn't come for that - I came for her to tell me if she could fix it or not. I felt she was being unnecessarily negative and rude, and the strap that was loose before I came to Wendy was completely off by the time she finished examining me in the dress. I felt that she was being heavy handed for a very delicate piece (head to toe lace and bead work) and now I have another issue to fix. I'm sure Wendy is great at her work, but that doesn't give her license to be rude to customers and badmouth actual designers. read more

I brought Wendy a knit wrap dress to hem in January and asked her to use the scrap fabric to lengthen the ties at the waist. While I was in her workshop the process of describing what I wanted and asking her how she would do it felt very hurried and she gave very short answers to my questions. I got the sense she thought my questions were unnecessary and she didn't really want to take the time to answer them. Really, I don't think they were unreasonable questions or that I asked very many of them. I'm a pretty quiet person, just trying to get the details right. When I received the dress I found that the sewing at the front of the new hem was noticeably wavy. And she had added exactly the same amount of scrap fabric to each of the wrap ties - I wish I hadn't felt so hurried and she had been more interested in the project, so we could have talked through how one tie should be longer so it can wrap further around my body and when I tie a bow at the front of the dress, the strands could be the same length. As it is, the ties are even when they sit exactly at the side of my body, like facing directly to the left - not ideal. Between the wavy front hem and just feeling like she was impatient and disinterested, I will go somewhere else next time. read more

Wendy always does a great job, listens and is creative. Have been a client for years and wouldn't consider going anyplace else. One of the oddball things I asked her to do is figure out a way for my waist apron to support more weight (lots of dog treats, my phone, doggy bags etc) as it kept slipping down at the worst time when I was walking dogs for Berkeley Humane. She not only put in 4 button holes to loop the ties through but reinforced the holes so they wouldn't tear. It's a tiny thing and she does much more complicated things but this was something that she made way more functional! read more

If I could give Wendy more stars, I would. I have now been to see her for three dresses and I could not be happier with her service!! The first was a long, fishtailed, backless, and sequined bridesmaid's dress. The train was way too long and the waist too high (I have a long torso). Wendy listened to my complaints about the dress and had it ready in a few days! I had been previously turned away from another tailor on University bc they could not even have it ready in 3 weeks! And the best part was that it fit me like a second skin. Imagine wearing a heavy, dragging, and backless gown all day/night for a Hawaiian wedding and feeling absolutely comfortable without giving a single thought about possible wardrobe malfunctions! After this I knew Wendy could handle anything I had for her. I brought in an extremely complicated piece of work- a Byron Lars dress with all the bells and whistles. I'm talking hidden front zipper, covered button placket, paillettes, frills, slits, vertical stripes, and a seamless ribbon sewn into the waist and the lining. The dress was too large and too long. Wendy was now familiar with what kind of fit I wanted, and again within a week, she made this crazy complicated dress fit me perfectly with no sign that it had ever been tampered with. I was so happy with it I almost cried. She also repaired another dress by the same designer where I had split a seam. It looks perfect and new and I've learned my lesson not to try climbing things while wearing a pencil dress. She is not the cheapest but then again neither is the quality of her work. And why would you want cheap work done on nice clothes? Plus she is an awesome lady who is so cute and pleasantly chatty, like a sweet aunty. Her demeanor and cozy little studio makes you want to stay and hang out, and her adorable doggie makes visiting her even more fun. If I ever need any tailoring done, I most definitely will not be going to anyone else!!! read more

I took a dress into Wendy for basic alterations. I wanted the dress shortened and one of the straps fixed because I have small shoulders that often allow for the straps to slip down. She was nice enough, put some pins in the dress, wrote me a ticket, and I didn't hear from her again for three weeks. When I called in to see where my dress was, she was very short and said it had been here a very long time and I had never come to pick it up. I asked her if she called me, but she said she didn't, just to come pick up the dress. When I got there ,she rushed me out the door and asked me to pay in cash, all the while saying she did not have enough time to call each customer when their outfit was ready. Upon getting home, the dress did not fit. The dress had straps that criss-crossed around my back and over the shoulders and she had sewn them together in some way that prevented me from even putting my head and arms in. I took the dress back and while she fixed it for me there, in front of me, she did so with a lot of attitude. She said I should be appreciative for how much time she's put into this dress, that she gave me a discount on the matching tie, and upon my assertion that maybe she had made a mistake with the straps, she snapped back: "Only stupid people would do that." The dress is wearable, but the experience ensures I will never be back. It is perfectly fine to make a mistake (after all, the straps were a bit complicated), but there is no reason for being nasty or refusing to admit your own mistake. read more

Problem: Two of my favorite Element short pants. One is missing a button, the other's button is still on but just barely. I packed my two shorts into my backpack and made the trek from the UC down to where Wendy is. I sprinted the whole way and, because of Google Maps, ended up overshooting Wendy's by about 0.5 miles. I asked for directions and backtracked my way to Ashby Ave. I remember reading off Wendy's website that she's out in the back, so I opened up a little doggie fence and entered her backyard. As soon as Wendy saw me from inside her building, she smiled warmly and welcomed me in. I gave her my shorts and told her what the problem was. She started stitching up the shorts all the while talking with me. She told me that I looked like a student, which I responded to in the affirmative. She asked me a host of other mundane question (i.e. Do you have any siblings, where do you come from, what do you study, do you go to parties, did you have school today?), but she always had a pleasant tone and was genuinely interested in what I had to say. After she was done fixing my pants (which only took some 10 minutes), I asked her how much I owed her. She told me that it was free because I was a student, and that I would need to study hard. Eventually, she said, I would get a nice paying job and only then could I come back and pay her. Overall, my first experience (some 40 minutes ago from the posting of this review) with Wendy was fantastic. Unfortunately, because she fixed my pants for free, I cannot say exactly how much she typically charges for fixes. I didn't expect Wendy to possess such a bubbly and welcoming personality, but I love her for it! read more

Wendy Lo is great! Her clever business name caught my attention, and so I came to her when I needed measurements for a bridesmaid dress. The wedding was out of state, so I couldn't go to the bridal shop where the dresses were purchased. I didn't need an appointment and she didn't charge me a dime to take my measurements! I went back to her for the alterations and she did an amazing job. I thought my dress turned out the best of everyone in the bridal party and she actually charged less than the other girls paid for their alterations at the bridal shop. Since then I have taken several items to her. I am only 5'2", so I lways need my pants to be hemmed. Her prices are reasonable and she gets my clothes back to me in a couple of days. She is fun, funny, and easy to get along with. The plus, she works in the back of a little shop with the cutest clothes! I went to Wendy having heard great things about her. Well, first, as a huge doglover, her dog is completely adorable and she took a picture of me with it and I even sent the picture to my kids. So as I am a friendly person, I chatted with her about owning a house on Ashby Avenue in Berkeley and I think she must have decided I was rich and so she could overcharge for her services. A normal rate for adjusting a pair of pants we have found is around $18. Wendy presented me with a bill that said, "$28 times 2 = $76." I pointed out to her that 28 times 2 is in fact 56 and she changed the "$28" to "$38." More than twice the going rate! I tried to make a joke of it and asked her if that was her regular rate or her wealthy homeowner rate but she claimed it was the rate for everyone. She also quoted something equally ridiculous to fix a sleeve of my wife's coat, over $40. I was very nice and polite to her and it seemed I was leaving on good terms. I thought hey, that's not such a smart way to do business, but no huge judgments on my part. That's not the worst part however. If only that had happened, I wouldn't be writing a review. I was reading a book that day that I accidentally left at her place. She didn't know this but it was signed by the author, who is one of my favorite musicians and whom I have hung out with a bit so very meaningful to me and not replaceable. I called her and left a voicemail to tell her I would return soon for it. I came back the next day and she told me she had "thrown it in the garbage" because "I don't have time for this sort of thing." Hmmm. I pointed out to her that it would have taken no time for her to leave the book where I accidentally left it, in her dressing room nook, and she knew I was coming back the next day, whereas it DID take time for her to throw it "in the garbage." That's just not what normal, nice people do, let alone businesspeople, throw someone's book out. So I went to the trash and there were eight (!) refuse containers counting recycling. I wasn't sure which one was right and she wouldn't tell me at first. I looked in the trash containers and nothing was there and similarly there was nothing in recycling. She then came out in a huff and opened one of the recycling containers and OPENED A BOX in the recycling and the book was inside there. So in the end I recovered it. Be warned: Wendy is the worst person and worst businesswoman ever. She will try to rip you off and then will not act like a normal human if any problems come up. Also watch her mathematics on your bill though if you are smart you won't have a bill with her because you will go elsewhere. Anywhere else. Fast! And I don't ever write reviews like this. read more

I found Wendy on yelp. I had a short timeframe in which to get a bridesmaids dress tailored. Everything fit except the hips. She turned it around for me and 72 hours, in plenty of time before I have to travel for the wedding. She did a remarkable job!
