After the appointment, it was very easy to communicate with the owner. He responded promptly and was transparent. I had to schedule a last minute hemming request and it was done on time! If you're in a pickle, just call and see if he can do it. He will not schedule an appointment if he knows he cannot get it done on time, which I appreciate for being direct. Don't go here; go to Eclipse Alteration instead! The customer service here is deplorable! I arrived here when they opened at 10 AM to have a simple service - let out the hem on a pair of pants. When I walked in, I was not greeted at all. I had to say hello to the person there. He seemed reluctant to even talk to me. I'm not sure if it was because I wasn't who he was looking for or what the issue was. The gentleman, well, gentleman is a strong word for his lack of manners or professionalism. The person assisting me walked out of the shop while I was talking to him to look for John because John had an appointment at 10 AM. He was extremely uninterested in assisting me, despite there being no one else in the shop. He was very disrespectful and rude and I'm not really sure why. It felt like he was profiling me. I was very kind to him and asked if it could be let out and said I could pick it up whenever was convenient. Extremely poor customer service with no interest in assisting me whatsoever. There are ways to communicate with customers and conduct oneself in a professional way, and he did not at all do that. He did not communicate (I.e. "Can you hold on a second") or anything as I patiently stood waiting for him. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU ARE JOHN or maybe look like John. Go to Eclipse Alterations, who has more reviews and kind, welcoming service. Post note: The owners' response stating that John was a very important client proves my story is not at all concocted, as he alleges. A client talking to a clerk is not demanding. Gabriel is a true master of his profession. I came in with a few shirts and blazers and in return I gained not just beautifully fitted garments, but a deeper understanding of just what it is to build a wardrobe and feel great about how I looked. Among the best things he did for me was to explain to me exactly why he did not recommend altering a particular jacket-- it's a jacket I thought was cool looking and just a little too big, but he showed me the details of its construction which made it an expensive piece to modify, and although he has the skills necessary to have made it fit, he advised me that unless it had genuine sentimental value, I would be better served by spending my money on something with a similar style but which was better suited to my shape, and he taught me what to look for when shopping to suit my body. It's the mark of a great craftsperson to politely, respectfully recommend against doing an expensive job for you. I will absolutely be back with all of my future alterations, knowing that he will help me understand more about what I'm asking if I make a request which isn't going to have the outcome I imagine it will. read more

Gabriel is an amazing tailor and has worked on half of my wardrobe at this point and several of my partners' pieces. Not only do I know he can accomplish very difficult projects, but he comes up with solutions to all of my most confusing questions. I really really value my clothing and I can tell that Gabriel does as well. Several other reviewers on here talked about taking their vintage garments to him and I can confirm. I have taken so many beautiful vintage/designer pieces to him and he only improves them. He puts so much effort into everything he does. He is a craftsman, not just someone that knows how to work a sewing machine. He is also very adaptable for his community. Today I heard him change the pickup time for someone to accommodate their prom and ensure their dress is perfect for the event. The best tailor in Oakland! I had a new suit that needed tailoring that I've been putting off as I recently moved to the East Bay and of course I needed it tailored quickly with an event coming up. I contacted Gabriel through Yelp and he responded quickly and said he could get it done. I went in the same day, a Tuesday, and measured me up in 5 minutes. Shorten the pant legs and adjust the sleeves... He told me it'll be done on Saturday and it was! I was going to try it on at his shop, but there was a bit of a line to do that, so I took the risk and tried it on at home. Needless to say, it fit perfectly! I highly recommend Gabriel! Gabriel is a wizard! I recently lost a ton of weight and had a few items of clothing that I just could not part with, including a dress with a large back opening and a pair of sailor pants with a side zipper. The fit on my dress turned out even better than I had hoped, but the pants? Incredible! The size zipper posed a challenge as the pants couldn't simple be taken in from each side. After pinning them in and carefully reflecting on the options, Gabriel explained how he would reconstruct them, and also fix the uneven back pockets. It was not cheap but it was 1000% worth it - they now fit like a glove and I have received nonstop compliments ever since.
