We drove by Werkhaus Pizza and thought, "Hmm, we should check this place out sometime". I looked it up on Yelp, learned they offered deep dish pizza, and we made plans to check it out. We arrived during the week just as they opened. The restaurant was empty with one other couple coming in before we left. The place has a decidedly Italian vibe. The server was sweet. In an effort to recreate our favorite deep dish pizza from California from Zachary's, we ordered a pizza with spinach and mushrooms. The pizza was pretty tasty. It has a good mix of fillings and the crust was not bad. It didn't compare to Zachary's, but in our search for deep dish pizza in Cincinnati, a search that's still underway, Werkhaus was OK. My family had an excellent dinner at Werkhaus! We arrived right as it was opening on Sunday and there was already a line forming at the door. We were seated easily, but it was clear this place is an institution! My husband loves pizza and said this is one of the best Chicago pizzas in our area. Been here several times after my review and but tried new things on their menu this time. Never had the pickle pizza and I have to say it was fantastic. My wife liked it and she is the type that sticks with what she likes and she said she would eat this again. My wife got the flat bread pizza which is new. She liked the thin crust but thought it was a bit dry. I don't know if it was just this time or if they make it that way but needed a little more sauce. I had the stuff pizza. I really enjoyed it. I used to stop by here regularly when I lived in the area but this was my first visit in several years. Unfortunately it wasn't nearly as good as I remembered. We called in and stood around for a few minutes trying to figure out if someone is supposed to approach us for seating or if we had to go to the counter. After awkwardly lingering for a bit I managed to catch someone who added us to a waiting list. The wait itself wasn't bad considering how busy it was. Our table ordered 2 salads, a pizza hoagie with chips, lasagna fettuccini Alfredo. We also asked about the PB&J special which the server said was a dessert. I said we would like to order one and they said they'd put it in shortly after bringing out our food. Then the waiting began. It took quite a long time to get our salads and sadly they forgot one of them. The rest of the food was also a fairly long wait and ended up being a mixed bag. The lasagna was great, the fettuccini Alfredo was bland and hoagie was awful. They also forgot the chips that I ordered with the hoagie. A while after finishing the meals our server approached and asked if we'd like to dessert or if we were ready for the bill. I reminded them that we ordered the PB&J and they said it was being worked on. After another 15-30 minute wait our Pb&J was brought out in a to-go box. We ate it there all of us were underwhelmed. It was just fine. Basically warm dough with some Skippy and Smuckers. We had ordered some dessert to take home before we were seated since they were running low and they were nice enough to keep it in the refrigerator while we ate. Unfortunately we didn't notice until we got home that they gave us the wrong thing. Sadly, I don't think any of us will be returning anytime soon. read more

I ordered a build your own pizza- each topping was $1 which didn't really make it an affordable option... but I know what I like haha! The pizza was good- had more cheese than I typically like, and a very pan fried crust- which isn't my first choice- but I know it's preferred by many! Werkhaus is definitely not the same pizza it was a couple years ago. My family all agree they have changed there recipe,gotten smaller and less toppings. I don't know if the family that owned it sold it or what but the quality is just not there. We went here after our neighbor mentioned them and then we saw a review in the paper. The place was packed the night we went but the servers were on top of things. Service was attentive. We shared a Caesar salad. The dressing was house made but the large salad was probably more than the two of us needed. We tried an original cheese pizza and a Chicago Classic. We did this both so we could have left overs and so we could compare the two types of pizza. We found the sauce on the Chicago pizza very full of tomato flavor but otherwise a bit bland. The Cheese pizza was more to our liking. My husband could not resist taking a piece of their cheese cake home. It was quite good, with nice lemon flavor. Downgrading my review to three stars. Unfortunately, Werkhaus has gone from good to average. Everything just is not as good as it once was. Service is no longer welcoming to all. Servers seem to spend their time talking to regulars. In doing so, they do not notice when other tables need assistance. I can see how this is a draw to regulars, but it does not make those who patronize the establishment less often feel welcome, or that their business is appreciated. Food is less full, and more sloppy. Toppings are not as plentiful. On top of everything else, the food was fairly bland. When the ingredients/toppings themselves are flavorful, I can understand using less seasonings. When those ingredients/toppings are bland, additional seasonings are needed. On no-chain establishments, I try not to downgrade my reviews, but in yhis case, all of these problems just added up. read more
