I also had the Mac n cheese and cauliflower. My aunt had the chicken fried steak and half of a chicken sirloin steak. She enjoyed all her food. The carrot cake was delicious. Two women working behind the counter on the line were so sweet and friendly. Interacting with them made my day - they were so sweet and enthusiastic. The traditional cornbread was delicious. I ate it with the Mac n cheese. I wasn't too sure about the Mac n cheese because I normally like it baked with the edges crispy, but I liked it! It's creamy.

Lots of good comfort food choices without being overwhelming. I got the baked chicken with green beans, carrots, and greens. My wife got the chopped beef steak with mashed potatoes and gravy plus a roll. We both did the LuAnn combo and tweaked it a little to fit what we wanted. The unsweet tea was spot-on! Everything tasted fresh, hot, and satisfying after a long day in the Medical Center area. What really stood out was the dining room staff. Friendly, attentive, smiling, and genuinely welcoming without hovering over you every five minutes. They made us feel at home, and tipping felt easy because the service was that good. The dining room was clean, peaceful, and honestly kind of relaxing compared to the hectic pace outside. The servers knew the menu well and were happy to answer questions. We always enjoy stopping here when we're in this part of Houston.

It's only fair to evaluate this experience with that in mind, rather than comparing it to a high-end steakhouse. Thumbs Up: Location - Finding the cafeteria on B1 can feel like navigating a maze. However, you should be able to reach it from any elevator, and the directions are clearly marked at every hallway intersection. If you get lost, just ask someone who looks like they work at the hospital for help. Thumbs Up: Breakfast - The café offers a good variety for breakfast, including a yogurt station with customizable toppings, a grill for freshly prepared options, and a station with premade items. Thumbs Up: Breakfast - Prices for the breakfast items, especially the premade options, are very reasonable. Thumbs Up: Breakfast - The cheesy scrambled eggs are light and taste almost too perfect. Thumbs Up: Breakfast - I didn't try them, but they serve the biggest breakfast sausages I've seen. Thumbs Up: Lunch - There's an even larger variety for lunch, including a grill (burgers, fries, etc.), a sandwich bar, cafeteria staples, and some heavier options. Thumbs Up: Lunch - The mac & cheese was really good, surprisingly so. Neutral: Lunch: The spaghetti's flavor was okay, but it was very easy to eat--no need to twist it around the fork. Thumbs Up: Lunch - The dirty rice had a nice spicy kick I didn't expect. It could use a bit of salt, but that's understandable, considering it's a hospital and some diners are on restricted diets. Neutral: Dinner - I haven't been late enough to try dinner service, so I can't provide feedback on that.

I must say that they feature friendly and dedicated staff about 95% of the time. Today I had lunch here in the St Lukes cafeteria- which has gone by the name Bertner Street Cafe for many years. My $9 chicken piccata plate came with two sides, a roll, and a drink. They also offered two other specials today: grilled salmon and Salisbury steak. Staff members were all very nice. If you are having a loved one here in the hospital, this café is perfectly acceptable. (Of course there are several other choices nearby if you wish to leave the building.)

Tried the pork chop (on a bed of rice), Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and peach cobbler myself-probably had gotten the grilled chicken burger, that was good, though I expected just a piece of grilled chicken. The pork chop was mainly fat, though, and I bit into UNCOOKED RICE. If you don't know, that $h!7 is hard -_-. Mac and cheese was flavorless-what the what?! Mashed potatoes were like a thick paste-could lay brick with it, and the peach cobbler was Bitter af-could Smell it, still tried, God offered to take me home, but my kids need me. My daughters father got the pho, missing the broth, bad flavor, her got the blackberry cobbler and that was just passable enough to eat, but only barely. That was the last meal I dared. Here for our daughters heart surgery. Rough, didn't know I might need medical attention myself :E.

Not factoring location into this review, but the cafeteria staff consistently maintains a clean environment, and the setup of the cafeteria allows large amounts of people to enjoy their meals without feeling the "bustle" that often plagues cafeterias. There is nice outdoor seating too, and a lot of it. I'm taking one star off because they close at 2! It would be nice to have the option for food items later in the day. Food: 4/5 There is a grill station, and make-your-own pasta station, a deli, a special entree section, salad bar, and more. The food is high quality for a cafeteria. I recommend trying one of their burgers with fries. They provide large servings that make the prices worth it. Service: 4/5 The staff is friendly, and I have never had a bad experience here. They work hard, both to get your food order ready, check you out, and keep the place clean. One star off because they do not always seem equipped to handle rush hour efficiently.

NOTE: review is on the Gumbo only…read more I have had my share of gumbo in my life, but nothing has ever come close to the stuff I get at the Baylor College of Medicine Cafeteria. I know, I know, that seems like the oddest place you might find good food - at a cafeteria, a college one at that, but trust me, it's to die for. I worked at Baylor for just 6 months (it felt like eternity, really) - kinda like hell, and only a hair cooler in the mid summer Texas heat... but I was blessed with the gift of Friday gumbos. Even today, years after the trauma that is Baylor, when I go home to Houston, I always plan on being there on a Friday and driving the 20 some odd miles to the Texas Medical Center to purchase multiple quarts of gumbo. It's worth the effort, but a lot of effort it is... 1) the gumbo is only served on Fridays 2) they almost always run out within the hour 3) here's the kicker - I'm not completely sure the cafeteria is open to the public The last few times I can remember, I've had to sneak past the security guards. And I was caught once, and ended up having to drop a few names. I donno, may be the thrill is part of the attraction - it's possible that if you asked nicely, they will let you in. But, if you are an employee of the Texas Medical Center, you have no excuse! It's imperative- you MUST go and have the mythical gumbo.
