All of my purchases have been through the website, but since they have a store just blocks away from my office I thought I would pop down there on a lunch break. I spent 45 mins wandering about, the store was fairly quiet there were more salespeople than customers and I wasnt acknowledged one time. Not a greeting not even a smile, it was like I was completely invisible. How one is able to spend nearly one hour in the store passing by several staff members and not get even so much as a "hello" is beyond me. I truly love West Elm furniture but their customer service and furniture delivery is TERRIBLE. Over Thanksgiving I bought a bed, rug, and console for my kids in Seattle. The items hit the warehouse on 12/5 according to the tracking number. After multiple and daily calls to the delivery service....the furniture is still not here and their phone mailbox is full! The furniture was PROMISED before Christmas. Going to the store in downtown Seattle did not help. My daughter was told "it's out of our hands. You'll have to wait on the delivery service". West Elm's offerings are stylish and affordable, and the home accessories or decor you can buy in-store are often good finds. However, avoid ordering any furniture from this brand. We've had awful experiences, including leather and wood items arriving with scratches, gashes, and other quality flaws, and five- or six-week additional delays on back-ordered items. Today's delivery reached a new low. We'd ordered a bed set (the leather grid-tufted headboard and matching leather frame), and it arrived scratched, but even worse, so defective it couldn't be assembled. I called West Elm to discuss a replacement and was told that the item is now on back order, so we'd have to wait an additional six weeks minimum. The unnecessary stress and frustration this has caused us, not to mention the time we wasted waiting for and scheduling around the delivery, has settled the issue: We will not order anything from West Elm again, no matter how tempting the price or style. This brand has long-standing issues with quality control and organization, and there is no accountability for the delays, flawed merchandise, and other problems. read more

We bought a rug from West Elm, which we loved. It was from India and turned out to be infested with moth eggs. Not only did they ruin the rug which was 9'x14' they also ruined about $1,500 of my wife's sweaters. I would be very, very cautious about buying any goods from West Elm that are from India. In store experience seemed too simple, and now I know why... I purchased a Bliss sleeper sofa. First off, the delivery was two weeks later than first told. When I called the first time, I was told I would be called back, but no phone call. The second time I called I was told that they had delivery delays, but still a courtesy phone call to let me know it was going to be delayed would have been professional. At that time I confirmed that I would get a phone call to schedule delivery, but instead I got a phone call the day before telling me when the delivery window was. Fortunately I was going to be home. I bought a bed at west elm about 5 years ago. The center support beam of the bed frame broke. I went into west elm and they told me I had to call support to get any help. Over the next 6 weeks, I called support 3x, waited ~2weeks to get the "replacement piece" in, only for it to be wrong.. twice. The third time I called, I was put on hold for an hour and when they got back on the phone, they told me they'd call me back. 5 days later.. still no call. So I went back into the store AGAIN and was put in touch with Brian (stock room manager). Brian immediately found me the piece and put me out of my bed frame woes. While this review should realistically be a 1 star because of how horrible west elm's support center is, Brian's customer service deserves a 5. I'm very disappointed in my experience with West Elm. I found some bar stools I was interested in on their website and then walked to the store to check them out and see about buying them onsite. I waited for a very long period of time to get some assistance and finally went to the front desk to inquire about the stock on the bar stool that was actually in the store. They only had one of that model in the state of Washington, so I was told I would just have to order online and pay the costly shipping. I did this and when I ordered was informed through email that the stools would be delivered on Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. I was out of town on business prior to this, so was glad they would be delivered when I was home. I got home from 13 hours of flying to 4 huge boxes stacked in front of my door, four days before the expected delivery date. I had to wrangle my suitcases and four enormous boxes just to get through my door when I was exhausted.. very frustrating. I was surprised the stools were in boxes and not assembled as I had hoped. I set to work digging each of them out of the boxes to assemble them, assuming it would be easy since I went with a higher line than IKEA, which has always been simple enough to assemble, but no. I spent hours trying to find the holes in the bottom of the chairs to put the bolts in and trying to get the washers to fit on the bolts. Finally, in a state of defeat, I called my dad who lives 40 minutes away to get his advice on what might be the problem. He drove over and spent 2+ hours trying to get the washers off the bolts and trying to find the holes to put the bolts in. He has built houses, so he knows what he's doing, and said the washers weren't the right size and the bolts were stripped, even on the bar stools in the two boxes I hadn't opened. West Elm sent me the wrong hardware and the holes to put the hardware in were not properly drilled. I feel like I shouldn't have to pay the high price that I did for such a lack of quality and convenience. The stools are beautiful, but not fully functional because I don't have the bolts or washers needed to put them together. It's like going to a fine dining restaurant and the food tastes great but the service is terrible and you didn't get all the items you ordered.. it's still a negative experience. I won't be shopping at West Elm again..in the store or online. read more

I love West Elm stuff, product and style, but this store has the worst customer service I've ever encountered. I placed an in-store order for an item ( after going round and round with a sales gal who told me the item didn't exist even though I'd seen it online and there was a display version IN the shop). She wouldn't believe me it was in the shop but refused to get off her chair in the back (nobody was manning the front counter), so I had to take a photo of it and bring it back. I finally purchased the item for an in-store pick up, and called several times to check its delivery status. Nobody EVER seemed to know when it would arrive, I finally called and was told it'd been delivered the previous week. Why had nobody called to tell me? It should not be the customers duty to continuously follow up. I went in to pick it up, waited about 5 minutes at the unmanned front counter, then found about 4 employees sitting in a back area. The woman to help me was rude and seemed annoyed that I bothered her and just curtly told me to drive around back. Where?? I had no clue what she meant, so she finally handed me off to a warehouse guy who was super nice and super helpful. The four-month experience I had trying - unsuccessfully - to buy a couch from West Elm was unquestionably the worst I've ever been treated as a customer. Four months ago, my husband I decided to buy a couch from West Elm. We went into the store and were told by the perfectly nice sales associate that the couch would be delivered in 8-12 weeks. Longer than we were expecting, but no big deal. Three months later, after my credit card had been charged in full, we receive a call from a middle-man delivery company informing us that the couch was ready for delivery. I took the day off from work to greet the delivery company and cleared out the living room, only to receive another call from the deliverers, this time informing me that the couch had been damaged in transit and that West Elm would be following up shortly. So I wait, having already paid a hefty chunk of change to West Elm, for their call. Nothing. After two days, I called them. They had nothing to tell me, no knowledge of what had happened or how long it would take to remedy, and asked that I call again two days later. I call back, still no information. This goes on for about a week, until I finally reach out to the local West Elm store manager. She kindly informs me that the local store is just a showroom, she has zero power to recover my couch or to ensure its repair or to offer me a refund for my trouble, but she agrees to reach out to corporate on my behalf. She does in fact follow up and assures me that the damage to the couch was small and should be repaired in a week; call back to corporate if I don't hear anything. A week later, after not hearing a peep from West Elm, I call customer service and ask to speak to a manager. After being placed on hold for 20 minutes, I'm informed that the manager refuses to speak to me. I am not being belligerent, I'm not angry, the manager has simply decided not to talk to me because "she can't do anything." The helpful customer service lady at least apologizes on behalf of West Elm and offers to discount the couch 10%, with no promise of when it'll be repaired or when it'll be delivered and in what state. I decline and ask that, four months after visiting West Elm in person, she refund my money so I can buy my furniture elsewhere. I am honestly baffled by this experience. I totally get that mistakes happen, I was bummed by the delay but it wasn't the end of the world. But never once did West Elm follow up or even let me know that my couch was damaged, nor did they give me any sense of when it would be repaired, all while they already had my money. I truly believe that if I hadn't followed up they would've kept my money and forgotten all about me. How hard would it have been to call me, just once? How hard could it be to replace a damaged couch? How is this company in business? I like West Elm's products, I'm a young professional with an empty house to furnish, but I will never again spend a dime at West Elm after this experience. read more

I'm on attempt #7 to get a large dining table returned because the color doesn't match what they posted online. I bought because part of the over priced white glove service they charge you for, said that we don't like it for whatever reason we can return within 30 days. Well, I've been trying to return this for a month now. They're running the clock, by not coming to pick up the table. I've recorded the customer service calls and email attempts, and even have the customer service guy admit that he took our initial call 3 weeks ago. West elm came highly recommended from friends. I love the style of their pieces and was excited to get some deals over Labor Day weekend. The in store staff was great, super helpful....and then, things started to happen. I received one of my rugs promptly, and really liked it in person. The second rug seemed to be taking FOREVER to arrive, so I checked the tracking number and it said it had been cancelled. When I contacted customer service they indicated the order had been cancelled by the warehouse because the rug had gone out of stock, my money had been refunded, and I should have noted that in my bank acct. I inquired as to why I had not been informed via email regarding this cancelled order, and she said there was no way for west elm to have known that the cancellation occurred. If that is the truth, why in the hell would anyone purchase things from this company. The purchase order means what...jack shit?! What the heck. I'll never buy something from west elm again. I would recommend they reconsider their customer service regarding cancelled orders, maybe start with figuring out how to inform customers it happened in the first place would be a good starting point. I purchased more than $4,000 worth of furniture from West Elm's "Bliss" collection- had a custom fabric and everything - and found it to be everything but bliss. It's supposed to be super comfortable and look neat all the time because it has one seat cushion on each sofa instead of two or three. But once I got it I found I actually hated the look - it looks like someone made the cushions at home or something - not the sleek look I was going for. I've just had the furniture a couple of months and already am making plans to get rid of it. Oh, and forgot, except for the chair-and-a-half with the ottoman it's not even comfortable. Absolute nightmare to deal with. Went to the store to order a dining table, associate mentioned they don't have it in stock and so placed an online order. She was very helpful and friendly and this review is not a reflection of the store, but of West Elm's customer service organization. My order was placed on August 7th 2016. Today is September 20th 2016 and still absolutely no response or update from West Elm on why my order has not yet arrived. Every time I call their customer service helpline, all I have experienced is numerous transfers with no answers as to what happened with my order and having to deal with associates that are so rude that you almost wish you never called in the first place. Almost 45 days after having placed the order, I still have no answer other than "call our warehouse, here's the number, they may or may not know what happened to your order". Unfortunately, this is not the first time I have walked into this location and asked a store associate for help and was greeted with an unhelpful attitude. Lately I find myself wondering why I have to work so hard to get someone at this store to help me, offer other suggestions, and work to find a solution. In today's example, I walked into the store looking for an item I saw online. A sales associate greeted me and asked if they could help me "find anything today" in which I replied yes! I gave her the item information and asked if this item was available to be shipped to the store so I could try it out before spending a grand or two. I explained to her what type of item we were looking for to fit into our space, and it needed the functionality to be slept on but we didn't want to pay to ship it to our house only to learn it's uncomfortable for sleeping, and have to pay again to ship it back to West Elm or rent a truck to drive it to the store to return. It's a lot of hassle for a lot of money. The sales associate began with, "well only 10% of the furniture we offer online is able to be shipped to the store" and then proceeded to type in the item information. Okay, that gives me a good feeling - not. The sales associate then said, "unfortunately this item isn't able to be shipped to the store." This would have been a great opportunity for said salesperson to offer up an additional option - what about a "let's try to find something else that might work for you! I understand your needs and wanting to see it in person, let me see what we have that would be available to be shipped to the store" or even a, "bummer - this item isn't available to be shipped to the store but have you thought about trying XYZ option (insert anything somewhat helpful here" but no. I got no suggestions. No actions to take. No next steps. I simply said, "Okay, I guess nevermind then" in which the sales associate said "is there anything else I can help you find today?" ..... Really???? I came in asking for help, told you my story, what we need it for, what style we're looking for, and now I have to ask you again to help me find another item? For the prices sold in this store, I don't want to put so much work into being assisted with help. Sales associates are supposed to help sell you something. This store hasn't been able to do that the last few times I've walked in, wanting to spend money. There are much better options in the area with better customer service. Went to West Elm on 9/17, first time, and loved the store. That is the good stuff. I was there with my daughter-in-law for almost 2 hours and was never asked if I need assistance. Picked out the rug and lamp I wanted and went to the counter. She asked who was helping me and I told her no one. She went off to find someone. She came back with a gentleman I had seen many times while I was there. Never asked anyone if they wanted help and spent most his time talking with other employees. He said I should wait on the rug until Sunday and it would be 30% off (it was not) so I asked if the lamp would be on sale and he said no, as if it never goes on sale. A few days later the lamp is on sale. I called West Elm and asked for a price adjustment and was told that is not their policy. It is not my policy to pay more than I have to. She said I could get around it by bring the 50 pound lamp with extension back to the store, return it and buy it again for the sale price. Hmmmm, how much would I save hauling this back from Lake Stevens to downtown Seattle, pay for parking and drive back....really. You have no desire to keep your customers? Customer service representative I spoke to was rude and inpatient with me. I had questions about shelving that I saw in store and wanted to purchase, I was told the item was only currently available to purchase online which is fine but also drove the price up by $250 and had a three week back order. Again, understandable. When asked if it would ever be available in store, I was told yes but they aren't able to add me to a database to notify me when it's available. Like come on how hard is that to do in a sales system? Their suggestion was to continuously call for the month of May to see if it had arrived. Seriously? I'm stupidly willing to pay $1400 for shelving but I am not willing to pay that and have to constantly check the status of the product. Get a gripe West Elm and a better employee training program and while you're at it update your POS to allow customers to be contacted for product arrival. read more

I was looking for a couple of rugs and some lighting as I'm redoing my home. He helped me every step of the way and offered great ideas. I love their design, and their items in store, but if you have to deal with customer service, or furniture delivery, you will waste hours upon hours upon hours of your life just sitting on hold, getting transferred, and still not get your issues resolved. Apparently it was damaged in transit, and had to be repaired, meanwhile, a delivery guy showed up to our house to deliver when nobody was home with no warning, but what table was this?! Ours was currently being re-ordered for another couple month wait time since it was damaged and un-repairable. HORRIBLE communication. We finally got our table delivered (damaged) and took another few hours to get on the phone and call for help. We were told we would get a hefty refund for our trouble. They told us the max refund anyone in customer service can give is $225!!! Soooo not acceptable! We will not be doing business again with them no matter how much we love their design, I am so over this company, that i want to return my whole dining room set because I hate to have anything to do with supporting a company that does not value their customers. read more

Yelp's lowest rating possible. Expensive Delivery Gone Wrong - West Elm Stands By and Does Nothing warning. After placing a sizable furnishings order, the designer said a delivery firm would contact me to make arrangements. They did: I arranged for what I believed to be all the purchased furnishings delivered on a date I could be there to provide access. Everyone along the chain of order/purchase/delivery was informed of need for arranged delivery. Got news late Sat night from neighbor about 2 giant cartons (most expensive items) sitting on my front porch past 1.5 weeks unattended. Sunday, West Elm on Westlake's manager, Shelly, explained they ship the "smaller stuff" via UPS, so unbeknownst to me, my scheduling with the delivery company was only for the bigger stuff. Here's the "smaller stuff" West Elm sent via UPS without my authorization : two 55 lb cartons totaling 110 lbs (per the UPS tracking I found). Friends offered to help, but couldn't lift the cartons. Shelly said she's 5'-4" and assured me the cartons are pretty lightweight and she can lift those cartons. Regardless, a 55 lb carton isn't lightweight, much less two of them. Throughout the day, as I checked back with Shelly to see if they could help me out (porch pirates in neighborhood), there was no effort to assist from her direction. I had a large investment of my money sitting on that porch and Shelly basically couldn't care less. I asked if they insured it and she said NO, that when West Elm emailed me a notice it would be shipped (I assumed it was part of the shipment I had arranged delivery for), it released all liability from their end. Each possible solution I pursued with Shelley was met with a response of No, Can't Do : 1) no one could drive out to my house and pick it up and bring it to their stock room til my return, b/c only one of the employees in the store drove that day (car too small? she didn't say) -- just not an option; 2) calling UPS to pick it back up from my porch and store it til I return to Seattle was not entertained, either. In the end, I called a small moves company (shout out to Seattle Moves and More (206) 972-6683 ... they were wonderful) at 4pm that day and Seattle Moves and More got the packages off my front porch and into the garage, with a friendly, can-do attitude, in a matter of minutes. What a 180 degrees difference from the unresourceful, unmotivated Manager of West Elm on Westlake who has no concept of Customer Satisfaction. NONE. read more

I absolutely love West Elm, and a lot of my furniture and decor was purchased there. The Seattle store has great selection and staff! The few times that I haven't been 100% satisfied the staff at the Seattle store (as well as online) have been more than accommodating! The customer service is always spot on and in fact I was surprised to read negative reviews and felt inclined to write a review since my experience has always been good . The managers are always willing to help make the experience great. They are doing a nice job so keep it up guys! read more

I know how to dress myself, but when it comes to my house, I may as well be blindfolded. Enter West Elm and their complimentary in-home design services. I worked mainly with a designer named Nicole, who measured my entire living room and basement then sent me a floor plan with options for how my home could truly reflect the adjectives I told her I wanted it to--colorful, modern, eccentric. Nicole was exceptional in her knowledge of furniture, layout and color theory. Plus I got 15% off EVERYTHING just for having her over--and I'll continue to get that percentage off every time I shop there through this year. I sound like a commercial, but seriously, I love this experience and Nicole. All my furniture arrived on time and in one truckload. My home finally feels like me! read more

I love West Elm, but my recent shopping experience was truly terrible. I got a carpet at one of your stores and was told I couldn't use a discount coupon because the rug was already on sale-turns out it wasn't. After following up several times, I got the discount and the true nightmare really begun: It's been 10+ days since I was scheduled to get the rug and after following up more than 5 times over the phone (and waiting for more than 20+ minutes each time), I was just told that the rug got lost and that the item is no longer available. Every time I called, I was given a different excuse: UPS order numbers were recycled, the weather was terrible, the holiday, etc. Also, I was told every time that UPS was responsible for the delays and that I should patiently wait for the rug to arrive and never got a new ETA. Usually, I don't report this kind of stuff but I can't believe that the customer experience with a reputable brand like this could be this terrible. I am really disappointed and I am seriously considering cancelling all the other orders I am (supposedly) getting this week. 5-stars for customer service in-store and online, 3-stars for sofa quality (cool looking, but really not very comfy - I chose instead the vastly comfier Axis Sofa at Crate & Barrel), and 4+ stars for an item I ultimately found online from WE - the Bin Pull 4-Drawer Media Console. A crisp and clean yet rustic design with the vibe of reclaimed wood (it's solid knotty pine), nice drawer storage, and a long display surface so that it's not just a utilitarian TV stand, but a stellar part of the decor. Shallow in depth, too, so that it tucks nicely against a wall without hogging a walkway. Just a warning, though, that it ended up being a medium redwood-brown stain in-person, as opposed to the caramel undertone conveyed in their pics (I had viewed it on three different monitors at home before ordering)... but it's still super beautiful, and I'd been braced for any number of variations, so it fits in fine. Look for coupon codes online before ordering big stuff like this. I got 20% off by using one from couponcabin, which helped tremendously. read more

I purchased a Kasbah "wool" rug from West Elm. I looked at it in the store and liked it. I was specifically looking for a wool rug. I ended up purchasing it on line because it was a better price. I received the rug, rolled it out, examined it and liked it. So I discarded the packing materials and placed my furniture. I was filing the tag that came on the back of the rug with care instructions when I noticed that it indicated the fiber content to be 44%wool, 42% cotton, 12% polyester and 2% other fibers. After a very long wait to speak with customer service I was curtly informed that the rug ndeed is 100% wool and "sometimes these thing happen". There was no apology for clearly making one false statement or any mention of correcting the problem leaving for future customers leaving me still wondering about the actual fiber content of the rug I purchased and feeling duped. Products are very nice, customer service is terrible. I ordered an item in November, and they sent me the wrong item. Before checking and admitting that the error was their fault (it was), they told I must have ordered the wrong item and there was nothing they could do. I did not appreciate the assumption it is my fault. They apologized but offered no compensation for the item which was now backordered. It is now late January and I still have not received the item. It is now on sale, so I called back, and they refused to give me that sale price. I canceled the order and re-ordered it saving $50, and now they are saying the exact same shipping address I used before does not exist and cannot be used. I typed in my building, and not the exact building to get the order through, and then called customer service. After waiting 20 minutes to get a person they told me to call back later and they could try to fix the error. All in all, poor showing West Elm. UPDATE: I am now told that despite being told my order had shipped, and their tracking showing an arrival date, they never shipped it, and it is on backorder until the end of March. I have had a very unfortunate experience with West Elm. I like their products but I am not impressed with their customer service. I order a headboard with wait time of 8-10 weeks. The item shipped on the 12th week and then took an additional 2 weeks to reach my destination. Now it is in their warehouse and they wont deliver it for another week.. Ironically, the first available date they have to move I is the same day I'm moving out of my place. And they were terse when I requested some of my money back. Target has better customer service.
