We spent a nice afternoon with George and his wines. He was very friendly and entertaining. Crackers, cheeses, and chocolate covered nuts and blueberries were a nice touch. We started with reds, fruits, whites, and dessert wines. We are a family that drink more whites than reds. George let us taste a sample from one of the aging barrels. It was a great experience!! The entrance and walk to sipping room was not what you normally see. All that aside it's all about available space & what one can do with it. This family owned winery truly made the most of space available in a interesting way. It was a superb lesson in wine & food pairings. The wine that was offered was different in that the process by which he makes the wine is very original, this is explained during tour. George was great, friendly, knowledgeable and had many a story to tell. The lady helping him could smile and be a bit more friendly but we all have bad days, maybe this was hers. I purchased a taste testing through Groupon. It stated that you had to have a reservation. As we were only going to be in town for 4 days, I called over 4 times prior to our arrival. The company never answered their phone even though their website hours stated they should be open. They do not have an answer machine so you can not even leave a message. I finally got a hold of one of the owners, He stated that he "always carried his phone clipped to his shirt and he never received a call from. me." He was very rude and stated that I must be wrong. I never got to the winery as the only opening he had was that day and I would have had to go their immediately. The business does not seem as though they care about their customers. When I drove by their business hoping to see that they were open and I could set u a reservation in person; there is no sign of life except for the sign on their lawn I would avoid this location and go to one of the other wineries in the area that care about how they treat their customers. read more

Easily the worst wine tasting I have ever endured. $6 for 6, half oz tastings from a plastic shot cup. Every wine we tasted was skunked, which was easy to see why since the bottles are not stored properly and have clearly been open for too long. Didn't buy any bottles and couldn't wait to leave. Do not bother to stop. I only learned about this place because of a brochure in my hotel lobby. Big mistake, I should've read these other Yelp reviews first and you should too. They were extremely unwelcoming from them time me and my guests walked in. They didn't greet us, they were very obvious that they didn't want anyone of color in their establishment. From the older man shaking his head at us and making us sit all the way at the end of the bar after not greeting anyone back, to the other brunette woman who immediately asked who was going to pay for all of the guests and how they expected to pay before offering us a drink. The energy was dry and bottom line they are very openly racists. I wouldn't recommend anyone of color spend money at this horrible ran down place. I am a huge fan of this winery. While the winery itself isn't much to look at, the wine is incredible. There isn't one type of wine out of the 20 or so varieties that George makes that I don't enjoy. My personal favorites are the Chambaurcin, Cabernet Franc, and Snow Bear. If you get a chance, stop in and try a few samples, you'll most likely want to take a few bottles home with you. And if you don't think you enjoy wine, just try a few varieties at West Hanover and believe me you'll be converted. read more

I went with a group of four and had a wonderful time. The young man working there was talkative and knowledgeable about the wines that we were tasting. Plus, at six dollars for twenty tastes (I'll admit we had quite a bit more, though), this was a steal compared to some of the other wineries in the area. I especially enjoyed the King of the North SS Oak-Aged, which I threw my money at. I got the Groupon for this place. Pulled up to a garage and was little nervous. We walked in "walked a maze through the garage into the wine tasting room." Told the grumpy old man we had the Groupon, he asked if we called ahead. I said no I didn't see that we had to he cut me off and said it's has it on there very rude. One of our favorites, for sure! At first it seemed a little sketchy wandering through a garage-converted-winery. But wow, never judge a book! The staff person ( i forget her name) rocked! There was no one else there so we took our time, talked, and really enjoyed it! atmosphere was pretty laid back, which is right up our alley! Brought home a few bottles. The Midnight Delight is awesssomme. Actually, all the wines were pretty damn good. This was worth the visit for sure! I visited the Harrisburg location with my family this past weekend. The wines that were served were OLD. The bottles that were available for sale were OLD. Brown whites and cloudy reds. They should be embarrassed to serve those. I would avoid a tasting or a purchase. At minimum, do yourself a favor and check the dates and the color of the wine that you are being served. Also check the vintage on the bottles if you are thinking of making a purchase. I refer to the grape wines only. I did not sample or check their fruit wines. read more

Let me start by saying, I really, really, wanted to write a good review for this place. Unfortunately it was impossible. I went with a group of likeminded friends; well traveled, experienced wine tasters. The VENUE: The winery itself was not offputting, although we found it a bit irregular to wander through the chaos of demijohns, cases of bottled wine, and winemaking equipment, to the dark basement tasting room. The tasting room could use a refresh makeover. They tout themselves as being the oldest winery in Dauphin County... but this doesn't mean they have to have the look as if nothing has been cleaned in 10 years. If you pick up one of the magazine/newspaper/events brochures, beware! They are a year old or older. The wine list papers on the bar were left behind from other people with notes and scribbles on them. We were asked to please use them and take them with us so they could provide new copies for the next people. SERIOUSLY? You can't afford to throw out 8 pieces of marked up, wine stained 20# printer paper? The SERVICE: The owner George greeted us but was leaving to attend his grandson's hockey game so we were left in the hands of an employee who does most of the tastings in his absence. She was very friendly and VERY talkative. She talked so much, about the wine, about George, about herself, about her family... it was very distracting. The tasting was reasonably priced at $5 for 20 of the 50 wines, $1 more ($6 tasting) got you the souvenir glass to take home. She talked and could not/did not pour while she talked. So she would talk for 5 full minutes between the 1 oz pours. Sometimes she would stop halfway down the bar (there were 7 of us) if someone asked a question and take for 5 min before continuing the pour. I kid you not! It took over 2 hours for this tasting. Two people purchased a few bottles out of charity and it took her an additional hour to ring up our individual bills. Most of us paid with cash ($6), exact change, but she painstakingly wrote out the reciept book and then rang it up on an old cash register. The WINE: I do not know if it is because they don't do many tastings here or if it was because they leave the pour spouts open, but every wine except one that we watched her open fresh was skunked. It was like drinking vinegar in which something had died which had then been poured through dirty gym socks. With each 1 oz. pour the smell slammed you in the nose even before you got a taste of the body odor infused vinegar. Many of us were spitting and dumping with each taste. I did buy one bottle so that I could taste it fresh and determine if the wines were all just that bad, or if they were skunked. The problem with offering over 50 wines, having that many open, offering 20 randomly at a tasting, doing a scanty 1 oz. pour, and being in a location where people are more likely to drive by than drop in, you are going to have a LOT of wine that has sat open for a very long time. More isn't always better. Limit the menu and the number of bottles open and you might be worthy of those medals hanging from the bottles that line the walls. The BOTTOM LINE: There are too many GOOD and GREAT wine tasting experiences in the Central Pennsylvania region to endure this one. Especially if you are visiting from out of town. Perhaps George will read this and make some changes? read more

Did a wine tour and tasting and tried a large variety of wines. The tour was short but I was ok with that! The tasting room is very comfortable but the entrance is a little bit of an odd maze. The tasting included a plate full of goodies to enjoy with the wine. I love the Late Harvest Riesling and recommend it if you like sweet wine!! read more

My girlfriends and I did a Vineyard wine Trail . When I spoke to him to accommodate space for 10 he seemed really nice over the phone , I guess when I mentioned my name was Michelle he just assumed I was white .They are the racist people I have ever met in my life . It's sad to say that we are still living in a day and time that this still exist after everything our ancestors went through . The moment we walked in it was straight up rudeness ,from the brunette who yelled at us just for asking for directions .We spoke/ greeted him no response was just as ignorant as can be . We went to sit he yelled on top of his lungs to the the corner in some dark cobwebbed direction so he could accommodate the white people in the opened light space . Not to mention we arrived first and they accommodated the white people first who sat down after us . The woman there was yelling who is paying for everyone before even offering us services or asking us what we were going to be doing . Words can't explain the ignorance and the unwelcoming of customer service that was given . If I could leave zero stars I would . Not to mention everyone who been here has written bad reviews so I am thinking the good ones must be family members . You should not be running a business if this is how you act towards people . It's wrong ! Your loss not ours ! Located in the basement of a house, it definitely sets you back at first impression. The ladies working the day we visited were nice enough and definitely could speak about the products. The restroom was out of order and the snacks were basically tasteless mints and some Hershey's chocolates. We did purchase two types of wines but I think that was more because we were in a purchasing mood and less because we were so bowled over by the taste. This place is definitely easy to miss because it looks like a house alongside the road! There are only a couple parking spaces. There is a sign and we walked into what looked like their processing plant. There are painted "footprints" on the floor that lead you to the winery store/tasting room. I was pleasantly surprised after walking through their processing area because the store was very cute. Small but cute. The lady was very informative and for $6 I got as many samples as I wanted and got to keep the glass. If you like wine a bit on the sweet side, go with the Steuben. It's very good! My wife and I arrived there on a Saturday afternoon, the place looked like a residence from the outside; we entered through what looked like a garage into the winery, we followed footsteps painted on floor to the tasting room, going through different rooms, maybe a basement, looked interesting, a mom-pop operation, generally speaking, the place looked absent of organization and appeared in disarray. There was one other couple in the tasting room, we took our seats at the bar and I gave the lady behind the counter my Groupon voucher, her face dropped, and I could sense her irritation with the fact that we were there with this promotional offer. She took our voucher, I believe she called to validate its authenticity, and marked the voucher as "redeemed" and wrote "Jay" on it. My wife and I felt not welcome there to say the least, but we thought to look the other way and give the place a chance. Next the old man got in my face asking where I got the voucher, if I had bought it or if it was a present, I told him I don't remember as I use promo offers from time to time and get some as presents as well, then he insisted that I had to find out and call Groupon or he would not get reimbursed. He was in my face all along, I told him that he should be able to contact Groupon to verify the voucher's authenticity and that merchants declare these "redeemed" as the lady had marked it. This went on for a while back and forth. At this point I was pretty upset and our interest of patronizing that place melted faster than a snowman in the Sahara! We left, with the old man still insisting that I had to contact Groupon. -If you don't like customers via Groupon you should not make such offers, zero customer skills. This is my first time writing negative review which I never do but I had too- because this was my Worst experience in the winery ever.. We should have turned away as soon as we pulled in the drive way. The parking was unmarked and were unsure if we had parked in the right drive way. While there was a man on the porch - who ignored us completely in the beginning but on the second attempt to get his attention finally told us we were in the right place ( note: no greetings or smile ). We were surprised to find out later that this was the owner!! After we parked we found our way in the winery ( which basically looks like someones garage) no one to greet, just an errors which led to a mystery door. Finally we saw a young woman standing by the register. She gave us a blank stare ( again no hello, no smile) we had to ask for a wine list and sample menu, she was not helpful in anyway and didn't explain a single thing about any of the wine we had tried ( a group of 5 people!). We had to pour the wine to ourselves and even had to ask for the glass!! In the meantime the owner came in the room and also completely ignored us. I am giving it two stars because the wine was actually not that bad and we ended up buying $80 worth of wine. again no thank you no good bye. Both of them were so rude and ignorant on the way that I had to say how disappointed we were with our experience - we didn't even get " we are sorry" Also, Most of the wineries we have been too do not charge you the tasting fee if you buy over a certain amount from them - they have charged us for serving ourselves. The owner made several racist comments, including saying he "does not hire any black people" because they are "lazy" and "smoke weed all day". Despite the fact that we were obviously uncomfortable, he proceeded making these comments. It's also in the basement of a house and dirty. We came to Hershey PA to spend our vacation for a week and one of our return visits was to come and see how things have changed at Wedt Hanover Winery. We spent a good bit of time talking to George who is a very knowledgeable person and knows a lot about wine. I loved this place when we first found it several years ago and it was better seeing it again. They know have over 60 wines and the tasting room was full and we all had a great time talking and learning about the wines we were drinking. If you love the personal touch this is the place. My girlfriend and bought the groupon for this winery and when we first got there we thought it was a bit sketchy, but it turned out to be great! The owner was an older gentleman that was really passionate and knowledgeable about the wines he made. He said the business is going to expand soon and make beer as well. Since we had the groupon we got glasses, a plate with various cheeses, crackers, and chocolate, and we tasted 10 wines in addition to the three he let us taste during the short tour. He told us stories about his son and wife who also work with him, and I'm a fan of older people and their stories, so I loved it. We ended up getting 3 bottles of wine. The Snow Bear is the only one I remember the name of but there was another one that had moonshine in it that we got too. We loved this place. You walk through a room filled with barrels and boxes of wine to get to the tasting room. We found this to be an interesting start to the tasting. 20 samples of wine for $5 is an unheard of price with a lot of wineries charging $5 to taste 5 or 6 samples - and we liked the wine glasses so we opted for the $6 tasting, which included a glass. George was the friendliest person, and we enjoyed talking to him as he poured the samples. Most of the wine we sampled was very good; a few might have been better had they been refrigerated and not room temperature. We ended up buying quite a few bottles. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here and hope to get back some day. read more

I can't even begin to describe how rude this owner was. We went during the Valenwine weekend that we purchased from groupon. Granted, we ended up getting there 10 minutes after it was to end, but there was a snow storm. He did stamp our card, though he made a little comment about it being late. Ok fine. I worked in the service industry for 20+ years and I've learned that it's always good to show a little graciousness, especially if you were hoping to make some money and earn return customers. After patiently waiting for 10 minutes because they were busy, he blatantly skipped right over us to ask people who were standing at the door if they wanted anything. My friend pointed out that we were waiting and he RUDELY told us that we would have to wait until he went all the way around the room to everyone who was there. He said the people at the door were there before us. My question was, then why don't they come to the bar? There was an open space there. Also, one of his other employees was already waiting on them. Honestly, if he had sounded at least a little apologetic or nice, we would have just overlooked it. There was nothing kind at all about this guy. Understand, we are not pushy people. Two of us have extensive experience in the hospitality industry, so we would never treat people the way we hated to be treated. We were at two other wineries earlier, and had great experiences. (Vineyards at Hershey and ADAMS Vitners were awesome!). We were all just so flabbergasted. I've never been to a business that went so far to make me feel unwelcome. Chances are, he would have sold at least 8 bottles of wine, because we are always working on building our collection, lol! After dealing with the grumpy, rude, ungracious, petty old man, there was no way I will ever step foot in there again. I honestly think it went back to the fact that we were 10 minutes late. Five stars for West Hanover Winery! It changed my life.... and I'm not just talking about the wine. George the owner was stupendous. His personality was sweet, aged, and unoaked...just like the wine! This really made the entire experience for me personally. Each serving of wine came with a whopping side order of wisdom (what a bonus!). My friend and I learned the secret to a lasting marriage - hard work- as well as the secret to a lasting life - Mother Vinegar. He was full of stories about his grandson, weddings (both American and Indian, but not American Indian), and food. The tour was great as well. Holy barrels! The only suggestion I would make for West Hanover Winery would be to include a sampling of the Mother Vinegar. That would've been the sugar on the wine glass. read more

4 of us went wine tasting around Hershey. The tasting room was in the basement of a house, and we had to go thru the garage to get to the tasking room. In the garage there were a lot of plastic and wood barrels. The tasting room was crowded and had Christmas and Halloween decorations up. At the bar we chose 6 tastings for $6. The bartender pulled out teeny, tiny plastic cups. All other wineries use glasses.I've had a lot of practice tasting wines having lived in No. CA. Every wine we tasted was dreadful. One of my party has an amazing palette and picked up the taste of charcoal in the merlot. After tasting it, she was so right! One wine tasted like vinegar. The pineapple wine had a taste of pork. When we left the owner asked me how i like his wine. I was honest and said it wasn't to my liking. He became argumentative and said his wines were not to everyone's taste. Then he proceeded to carry on about how he makes his wines, and how people like them so much. I didn't say anything just wanted him to give me my credit card back (unfortunately we had to pay for that tasting). He kept going on and on and finally gave me my card back and we left.
