Beware! We recently booked this fishing trip for $600 for four hours…read more When the captain and first mate greeted us they both assured us we would catch tons of fish. First mate said Captain Neil always finds the best fish. Very well orchestrated. They took us out 40 minutes. We dropped our lines. 9 minutes later captain Neil ordered all lines be reeled in. They told us we are moving to another spot. 40 minutes later we were right next to Sanibel Island at the end of the pier shallow water. It was advertised that if we don't catch fish the trip is free. You could tell the captain was getting nervous about that. The first mate casted and hooked a fish. Captain yelled let them reel it in. So I reeled in a small fish. Captain moved the boat at least 6 times. we caught two fish and a crab. We were expecting larger fish. We were told we would be farther out in the ocean. We didn't catch a lot of fish. We didn't go out in the ocean. By the time captain wasted time moving to spot to spot fishing was very limited. At the end of the trip he asked us if we wanted to pay using cash or credit card. He charged us $600 to give us a boat ride. Not worth it. I thought for sure catching two fish the trip would be reduced by half. The next day we were at Sanibel island speaking to a guy fishing off the shore. Who just caught two big sharks. We told him how disappointed we were with out fishing trip. We told us we were scammed. He said any boat that uses shrimp for bait are scams. He did mention there are charters that are for real. Most of them scam people. If you pay $600 for four hours of fishing you should fish hard for at least 60% of the trip. We fished about 10% of the trip. Another scam he put out two poles to troll. Problem being the boat was moving too fast and the spinners were coming out of the water.

Captains Dutch, Kevin and Patrick were incredibly patient and had excellent attention to detail. Dutch always noticed when I was struggling with a knot or over correcting my course and would calmly steer me in the correct direction each time. No question was too ridiculous and they made sure we all understood the concept before moving on in class. It was not easy, in fact the opposite and the tests were intimidating but as long as you pay attention and practice you will pass. We plan to come back and charter a boat on our own next time and hopefully grab a drink with Dutch to catch h up and share stories.

This is no holiday, but a real sailing boot-camp and worth every penny. Active daily hands-on learning and evening exams, you need to study up before you go to get the most out of the course. I learned so much from the extremely qualified, professional staff and realized that sailing is so much fun and also a great deal of work. We look forward to chartering some cats with family and building on what we've learned, that's the confidence the Offshore Sailing School has given to me and we are still kicking around the idea of live-aboard - one day!
