If you hate your animal enough to have this monster as your vet, just be kind and shoot your animal in the backyard or leave it in a field to find a new life. This "man" is an awful human being that got into the wrong line of work. I went there twice and my dog and I were both absolutely traumatized both times. I went back the second time to give him the benefit of the doubt that maybe he was having the worst day of his life the first time, but no... he's just a complete vapid waste of human space... an ass**** of the highest regard. Dr. Sam? Can you hear me? I know you can. Might I recommend you take that bottle of ear wash and shove it far up your own cavity. Maybe a quality wash might help. Nothing could make you behave worse toward animals OR the humans that love them.. that's for sure. You can bet that I will / have told everyone in my atmosphere to not go here. On the other hand, I don't have an ulterior motive, my life moves on whether I tell the truth or not... and I am telling the truth. Look how many reviews on here talk about how inappropriately Dr. Sam behaves. It's an issue. You can ignore it, but it doesn't stop being an issue, even if you do. Dr. Sam was absolutely brusque in his communication, but it's funny, because he yelled at me to essentially get out of his way while they examined him, but then when they couldn't control him anymore, they asked for my help. Hmm. Your staff wasn't concerned about me getting bit then... right? And you know why the staff asked for my help? Because he KNOWS me. He doesn't know the staff there. He trusts ME. This is why that poor dog shook like a goddamn leaf and was trying everything he could to escape their clutches. They were either swinging him around like a ragdoll or holding him down like a live bomb. It didn't have to be like that. He's a sweet boy and when he feels safe, he'll totally comply. Maybe having a shred of compassion would've helped. As you implied, I definitely was not the "good guy" to my pet that day... I felt awful for having handed him over to humans who borderline assaulted him. We both felt powerless to do much of anything. I made a promise to protect him and I failed that day. SECOND REPLY: At no time was I "hanging on to my pet". Nothing even remotely close to that. Since whoever is responding here admits that they weren't in the exam room, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you make that allegation out of ignorance and not deceit. "Due to insurance requirements, owner's are seldom allowed to restrain their own pets." If treated with any level of compassion and kindness, my dog would not need to be restrained. You know... maybe greet him when you come in the door, rather than just burst in and immediately start yelling at me and man-handling him or let him smell your hand and give him a minute to get used to you. This is why you're so concerned about being bitten... because you're "GO-TO" is to restrain the animals immediately. You are asking to be bit. "Perhaps Dr. Sam was a bit brusque in telling you that" - See, you made a mistake here, because you admitted that he's brusque (definition: blunt in manner or speech often to the point of ungracious harshness). There are a ton of vets out there, people. Even if this is all you accepted as truth, do you want to put your animal in the hands of someone who is described as "ungraciously harsh" even by his own staff? When my cat needed a emergency rabies shot this was the only clinic that understood and did everything to get me the soonest possible appointment when everywhere else told me the fastest they could do is a week away. My cat had blockage this mornin, I called at 8am, had an appointment by 9am and now he's getting discharged by the afternoon. I am extremely grateful for all that Dr. Sam and his staff did for my dog, beloved Bailey. Being new to the area, I had taken Bailey to three other places before being referred to Dr. Sam. One in Goleta and two others in Thousand Oaks, one being Bailey's long-term vet, before I had moved to Lompoc. Apologies for this log review, however, my hope is that it will help others if they are looking for a veterinarian in making the best decision where to take their pets. The last place I took Bailey, my dog, (Boxer), in Goleta gave me 3 options/surgeries for medical treatment. All 3 options were so expensive and not all of the treatments would have truly benefited Bailey's condition. It was also delivered in a very matter of fact way; it made me very sad and confused. As most of us feel/know our pets are truly a part of our family and depend on us. There was no care factor or compassion for our situation from the veterinarian. The medical assistant showed concern and in a caring way referred me to Dr. Sam. He said, "That's where I would go." I called West Valley before I left the parking lot and explained the situation. His staff was kind, compassionate, and they got me in the very next day. I was extremely grateful for Dr. Sam's expertise, direct communication, high level of experience, and personal compassion he showed for myself/situation and my beloved Bailey. Along with his willingness to go above and beyond for the most positive outcome was so appreciated. I will always be sincerely grateful. He was extremely rude to me. my dog had dark urine and is old. I brought her there to have her kidneys checked out to make sure they were functioning properly. The moment he walked in he asked if she was fixed and I told him no, we had wanted to breed her when she was younger and never did it. now that she's old I didn't want to put her through any unnecessary surgery at her age. He started belittling me telling me all the horrible things that could happen if I don't get her fixed, so I told him I'm not here about getting my dog fixed, I'm worried about her kidneys and if we could please stick to the reason im here, my dog and her pee. He told me to F off and to get out or he would call the police on me. I've never been treated like that before by someone, especially someone I'm paying to help my animal out. after calling other vets to see my dog, the vet I talked to told me that many people complain about him and have had issues with his temper and unprofessional attitude. never going there again. read more

Thank you for taking amazing care of me and my girl. I went to see dr Sam to get my girl fixed up because she has some spots and I have been nervous about them. The second dr Sam walked in he looked me and my dog up and down and gave us a dirty look and immediately started asking questions with this tone like was a piece of trash and he could not be bothered. I was so blindsided by the way he was speaking to me And talking down on me. I have never been so close to tears it was humiliating. He told me I was wasting his time and I told him never mind and I put her leash on and got up and walked out. I offered to pay on my way out and he proceeded to follow us and repeat that I don't need to pay for wasting his time. I am embarrassed. I had an appointment here to take my dog in- I've been looking for a place to call home for a vet office. I called a couple hours before to ask a question about my appointment and if a fecal sample was needed when the Vet doctor picked up the phone and yelled "I don't need you calling her anymore" and hung up. I have trusted my many pets to West Valley over the years, with Dr. Wes and Dr. Jodi, and now for the past 9 years, with Dr. Sam. The staff is always compassionate to both humans and pet, and they are always calm and reassuring, despite very tragic and frightening circumstances. Dr. Sam is a character, he has a very straight demeanor, but his treatment of my pets is so loving and thorough, regardless of the reason, that I trust him with MY life as well as my pets. My family has been bringing our pets here since we moved here 40 years ago. As an adult, with my own pets now, of course I chose to continue bringing them. Everyone on staff is friendly, and obviously cares very much for the animals. They are very accommodating in fitting us in as soon as possible (usually immediately) when we have a sick or injured pup. They call/mail reminders when vaccinations or exams are due. They go above and beyond, I always get follow up calls from Dr. Sam and staff to check on my dogs after visits. I think Dr. Sam has the perfect balance between knowing when aggressive treatment is necessary, or when it's better to be conservative. He always explains his reasoning, and I appreciate that he acknowledges my medical knowledge as a nurse- but is able to explain the difference in caring for animals vs people, without talking down. I always recommend West Valley to friends, and wouldn't want to go anywhere else! read more

Please do not take your animals here. The vet was very rude. I took my dog here hoping they could help me out.. as no other vets had appointments available. As soon as we walked in the room the vet made us feel very humiliated. It seemed like he was in a rush and did not even care one bit about the visit. He continued saying he will not be seeing our dog because our dog was very nervous and shaky. He did not even want to take a second to try to talk to my dog and calm him down. He looked at our dog for about 1 minute and said he had an infection and will send us home with antibiotics but will not see our dog again unless we give him Gabapentin and Trazodone before. I was very polite and told the front desk staff that I will not be returning, but I would pay for my visit. As soon as they told the vet he came raging out to the front calling us "ghetto" and told us to leave his business and go to hell as well as many other things. Please don't take your animals here. He was no help at all and very unprofessional! I do not recommend. Thank goodness my dog was not going through a serious condition. read more

Dr. Sam is great, straight forward and to the point, he doesn't sugar coat anything and you can really tell he and the entire staff love animals. The staff is great very courteous and empathetic. I recently had to put my cat down and they even gave me a clay paw print momentum from my Tito, such a sweet detail, I loved it! I believe he doesn't over price and he doesn't suggest any labs, x-rays, etc., that are unnecessary just to make a buck. I took my dog to see Dr. Sam and he was very aggressive and rough with Roxy. He handled her roughly with his hands. He's very pushy, unfriendly, rude. He misspoke to me. The only nice thing I can say about this clinic is his STAFF are really nice to me and Roxy. read more

They know what they are doing! My dog was getting very sick a few times a week. I took her to two vets before I came here and wasted my money because they didn't have much information for me and didn't take her condition serious. They didn't send me home with anything to help her condition so I felt helpless. Somebody recommended this guy and he was very helpful. He isn't very nice but he knows what he's talking about and loves the animals. If you can get past his attitude he will be tons of help. I was demanding blood tests and he talked me out of it because he didn't thint it was necessary and wanted me to save money. He sent me home with some decent priced nutrition and gave me a few pointers on how to prevent her from getting sick and she's doing great. All the receptionists are very nice and caring also. The first place to call the next day and check up on my dog. I'm taking away a star for his attitude but other then that he's great at his job and very knowledgeable. read more
