As someone who travels frequently and goes to gyms as apart of the traveling experience, I feel like I know a good gym when I step into one. Westerly Fitness is one of my favorite gyms I've been to. Maybe it's because I associate it with vacation, but it's objectively a fantastic gym. To start, they offer short term passes at really reasonable rates. Even better, no cumbersome process to start-- just sign a waiver, pay, and you're on your way. The man in the front was kind, efficient and welcoming. Secondly, the equipment. This gym has well maintained, new equipment. It's spacious and immaculately clean. The members are kind and respectful. The gym is bustling but not full. No waiting for machines! This is my annual gym retreat and I'll be back for sure. read more

Update: I did not change my version of events. My review was not about being charged a fee. It was about your conduct after I asked reasonable questions about that fee. I asked to see evidence that I failed to rerack the equipment. I also asked whether a warning could be given for a first offense. I had only been back at the gym for just over a month, and I did not see any clear signage about the policy. Those are not disrespectful questions. They are normal questions for a member being charged $50. At no time did I raise my voice or argue. When it became clear we were not going to agree, I smiled and walked away. That is when you escalated the situation by yelling profanity across the gym, approaching me, and telling me to "get the f*** out" because you "don't like" me. Your response confirms the exact concern in my review: this was not handled professionally. Instead of addressing the issue calmly, you made it personal, used profanity, and then doubled down publicly. The issue was never the existence of the policy. It was the decision to enforce it in a manner that reflected poorly on the professionalism of the business. Thank you for making clear that this is how you choose to handle member concerns. I needed a gym to workout for 30 days. Westerly Fitness was the cure. No other venues in the area could accommodate. Met with Mike the owner and he hooked me up. The venue has ample parking, men's/women's lockers and showers, filtered hydration stations . The gym is divided into 3 areas: Cardio/weights , workout classes and weight room . The usual players are there: Lifefitness, Rogue, Hammer Strength, Atlas, Precor , Platinum boxing and much more. Note no chalk is allowed. Members wipe down the apparatus after use which I appreciate. If you choose to workout in the mornings, Michelle will greet you with a cheerful hello as she keeps the areas clean. If you come from a gym with real gym culture, this gym is not for you. The young man who works here on the weekends is great and friendly. But the women who works during the week is the most rude & unwelcoming worker I have ever encountered. She is not friendly & if you are not from the area she watches you like you're going to burn the place down. My family has been spending our summers in Rhode Island since my mom was a little girl, I have always had great memories & amazing things to say about every place I ever went. But the hospitality to people who don't go to this gym everyday is not there. My home gym welcomes everyone with open arms & we have triple times the influx of summer visitors OF ALL AGES...also with no restricted areas. Last year was the first time we tried this gym & we had the same problem, rules & regulations that she makes sure we follow but not too concerned with others. If you are an outsider you will always feel like you're being watched. Now going in to the "off limit" area. I completely understand having equipment that only members could use in their "CrossFit" room but when the classes go on you can't use the area (understandable), so that takes one room away. Now they have a "stretching" room that you would think they would allow you to use as CrossFit when a class is in session but no...that room's equipment is also all off limits. My problem with all of the off limit areas (beside the fact that I've never been to a gym that did this) is there aren't many open areas to be in where you can do a hiit workout or just abs. You have to try to find a corner where you're not in anyone's way. They are definitely catering to the older crowd which is fine but if you are young going to this gym you will feel as though you're being targeted & not treated the same. Also if you're going to have a ton of off limit areas for "non platinum" members then at least have one corner for hiit work outs where people can go with "on limit" equipment. Now going off of always being watched & worried that no matter what I do I will be told I can't do that or I'm not allowed to. The stretching room equipment is off limits but if we would have brought the stuff from the other area I feel as if we would have been told we can't do that either. You can't move the benches so that takes out an area & if you can't move the benches how are we sure we can bring the boxes to a different area. Finally, no bags are allowed on the floor so if you are apart of the younger gym culture and have your own equipment (like most people at almost every gym I've been to) like straps & a belt or a barbell pad...you have to go in to the locker room every time you need one of those things! And I'm sure if I was playing music loudly off of my phone speakers like one man was, I would be told I can't do that. I never felt welcome or comfortable, I always felt like I was being watched & going to be told I can't do something. Even while my husband recorded some of my workouts, she walked past staring. I have gone to gyms all over the country & never had an experience like this. I have worked out with award winning bodybuilders in Hawaii with a friendlier crew than here. Most of the people that work out there are friendly but of course they are because they aren't getting the same treatment. I am never one to sit & nit pick things that I don't like about a place but from the first week I spent in this gym, I was not happy with the treatment. I have never reviewed a place, especially not a bad one but this place definitely deserves it since there was no change from last year. I can't imagine how this women would do in a busier gym setting on top of not seeming like she know much about the gym either. Again, I'm not one to ever judge but since receiving the same treatment from her a year later she's obviously judging me & my husband &all other outsiders. I don't know if it's based off of our appearance or age but she never smiles when I say hello or goodbye & that's just horrible customer service. We tried to give this gym another chance but after this time we will not be back. We already found a new gym & the people are super friendly...we sat & talked with them for a good 10 mins, knowledgeable & overall exactly what we look for. I was thrilled leaving this new gym that we found one that fits our lifestyle & our friendliness. It really is a shame because this gym is very nice and well kept. It has so much potential to be great and have a younger crowd but I guess that's exactly what they don't want. I wish they would just say that in their description instead of making you feel unwelcome. And again the women who works at the from doesn't treat outsiders friendly & definitely wouldn't have a conversation with you. I hope the front desk work changes her attitude because it's a shame that a young couple who loves to work out can't feel safe or comfortable doing what they love based off of our look or age. read more

I could not rate this facility and the staff here higher. Melissa G provided outstanding personal training. Directed, and individual. Melissa W has tough but motivating classes. Ashley's classes are strengthening, but her nutrition is life-changing. This is a facility that makes one better. Staff, owner and clientele all contribute towards it. read more

Zero Intergrity Scam-Artists. They hired a con-artist (a gym employee's words not mine) to sell a 16 week weight loss challenge. The con got a bunch of people to sign the contract by making numerous claims that the gym even knowledges were lies. The gym then acknowledged numerous people wanted out of the contract within the first week but say "our hands are tied". After sticking it out and abiding by the contract going three times a week for months, they found instances of people (including myself) scanning and leaving. They started deleting attendance w/o letting people know to ensure people have to stay in the contract for an extra 10 months. Integrity is for sale at this gym. They will screw you at all costs for keep you in the contract. One time of an employee saying (scanning and leaving isn't allowed would have saved me the rest of the year contract). When confronted, the owner told me I was just a typical angry Westerly person. I'm not from the North East and have never lived in Westerly but it's good to know what he thinks of the community of people where his gym resides. Learn from my expensive mistake, DO NOT sign a contract with this gym. For the same price as the YMCA, all you get here are weights and hassle. read more

I need a gym to work out while I was vacationing nearby. Came and visited, got a great tour and was impressed. The gym was clean, not crowded and they have every piece of equipment from the sled, to full cardio equipment, to a full set of Hammer Strength equipment. Staff was friendly and helpful. They had some scam artist advertise what sounded like a personal trainer program, but you had a group to go through it with. When I went in there for a meeting, I asked for clarification of what he was talking about. He definitely said I could cancel after a month as long as I wrote something to the company and sent it by mail, which I did. And there was no group effort at all. You just go in there by yourself, like a regular gym situation. I did it exactly as he told me to do and they rejected it. He will not answer my calls or texts, and the owner of the gym did not help at all. The good classes were always all booked up, and I figured my first day I would get more than a 30-second intro to how things work at the gym. Extremely disappointed. Now I am stuck with $1000+ bill from a debt collector for absolutely nothing. read more

This business owner runs specials for weigh loss. I signed up for a full year of training teamed with nutrition consulting. The consulting was a piece of paper and good luck. The weekly training sessions started good. After a few months a new trainer. He was also fine but left the gym due to a disagreement with the owner. I'm owed 12 more sessions. The owner will not abide by the contract. He admits I am owner the sessions but wants to extend my membership instead of provide the service I paid for. I wish I had a gym like this near me! I am from CT and am frequently in Westerly on vacation, I needed a good sweaty gym session one fateful morning, Googled gyms near me and this gym popped up. For $10 I was able to get so swole lifting 5 lbs repeatly for 1003 reps, really quick. They have different areas, a main area that has devices for cardio, combined with a few strength training machines, there is a ladies only work out area which is cool, and a war room littered with lifting devices and metal plates and different workout machines, I didn't know what else to do, it was like a playground. The staff was super nice and helpful. If I lived in the area I would be coming here regularly! Note: swole is just a joke, I don't talk like that, I just thought it was fitting for this. read more

I'm very excited about this new gym in Westerly. I've been a member of the YMCA for years... literally half my life... but their adult prices are a little too spicy for me. The gym looks a little like a warehouse. They have one extremely large room with treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes and a variety of weight lifting equipment. (several TVs to entertain you) Along the back wall they have free weights, TRX equipment, mats, kettle balls etc. They have small locker rooms (just slightly larger than your average bathroom) on the side, a room with a tanning bed, a room with a massage bed, a spin room and a fitness studio. If there isn't a class going on in the fitness studio, you can do a video class called Fitness on Demand. Pros: 24.99 a month - which includes nearly all classes (except TRX), tanning, water and a massage bed if you sign a year contract (I think it is 34 if you don't) 1 week free trial - just to make sure you like it TRX - you can use the equipment at any time for free.... which is the reason my abs feel like they are bleeding right now. The classes are a reasonable price if you want to learn how to use it. The staff has taught my friends and I a few moves. Great Crowd -. no one who is judgy Nice Staff - every time I walk in the owner strikes up a conversation Growing class schedule. The gym is only about 6 weeks old so they have minimal classes but the list is supposed to grow (fingers crossed) Livestrong bikes - if you like Spin they've got the fancy bikes Cons - To be honest this took me a minute.... but the only one I can think of is the parking lot is annoying. If that is as bad as it gets..... I wouldn't suggest this gym for kids... they don't have a day care or anything like that. This was by far my favorite place when I lived in Pawcatuck, CT. I was extremely handicap when I first started attending this gym. Mike (the owner) even told me he didn't want any money from me he just wanted to see me get better. My boyfriend did pay for a membership but I didn't have to pay for mine. Now I no longer live in Pawcatuck but I will forever be grateful for the kindness he showed me. Ashley which is Mikes girlfriend is also a sweetheart. Love this gym! I've been a member at every gym in Westerly and this is by far the best! They are only $24.99 a month which super cheap for everyone. PLUS they have free tanning! FREE! As well as hydromassage. They have a good amount of cardio equipment including treadmills, ellipticals and bikes as well as a rowing machine. They have weight machines which some of them you can do two exercises at one machine which is nice. There are lots of free weights and kettlebells, too! Also, TRX is a great suspension workout thats available as well as yoga equipment and resistance bands. Something that I tried today was a ab workout which I did in the room where they hold bootcamp and zumba classes. It was a fitness on demand projection screen where you can choose which type of workout you wish to follow along to. So if you have a funny work schedule and would like to take a class by yourself or with a buddy, this is perfect for you. No scheduled times! Although you clearly can't use it while another class is taking place. Only cons of this gym is small parking lot, no daycare and no dressing rooms besides the shower area. So far, all the staff has been overly nice and helpful. They're given free kettlebell demonstrations and a little TRX demonstration as well. I highly recommend this gym over any other gyms in the area. Get motivated and join! read more

At first I was very hesitant about joining a gym. I had looked at the Y (too expensive) and Luxe (overwhelming atmosphere and staff who seemed uninterested in letting me tour the gym). As a last ditch effort I looked into Westerly Fitness and couldn't be happier with my decision. The gym is clean with great equipment and a variety of live classes. The staff and instructors are always there to answer any questions and help support a healthy lifestyle. I am always greeted with a smile when I walk in and Mike is constantly improving the facilities- a new edition being daycare :) I recently extended my membership another 18 months, as I would never go anywhere else. read more

I Love this gym! Everyone is so nice! Very clean bathrooms and equipment. Diverse group of memebers young to old, no one judges you. They have a ladies only weight room! Plenty of Cardio machines- tredmill,bikes,rowing machine, ellipticals, stairs, arc trainer etc. Lots of barbells, dumbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, and bands. They have TRX! Also a great athletics section with a sled to push, battle ropes, and a fake guy to punch. They have a variety of classes in a group room but I've never taken one, I'm more of a solo type of person. They have REAL squat racks! (unline planet fitness and a few other gyms I've visited) AND they have a licensed massage therapist! She does a great job! (also very nice) read more

This is what a Gym should be. The staff is very pleasant . They are always willing to answer any questions and are extremely knowledgeable. I moved to Westerly 10 years ago and have been looking for a nice workout center similar to the one I left behind when I moved. I had a memberships at Luxe Fitness, but the staff was so apathetic, I was turned off. They made it very clear that they did not care or want to meet anyone. The YMCA just seemed too expensive, and not very clean. Overall I did not think their services were worth the price. When Westerly Fitness opened I gave it one more try. I am so glad that I did. It is very clean. The equipment was all new. (The have already expanded once to allow for more room to exercise... This meant even more machines and weights.) The entire gym has been newly painted as of 5/14. I am amazed at all the services offered for the very low monthly payment. ($25... $35 if you would like classes as well)This is how a fitness center should look and be managed. I would recommend Westerly Fitness to a friend. read more

I have a membership at Westerly Fitness for almost two years. I had to have surgery and when I called to let them know I was not able to work out until the DR cleared me. I was still charged. The DR has not cleared me to go back as of yet. I went to the gym to cancel and they said I was all set I filled the paper work out and left. I was still charged. I called the gym and spoke to the owner and he said he would not credit my account even though I have paid for over a year and was unable to go due to the surgrey. I asked for them to refund the money that they had debited my account after I canceled my account and the owner said no. I explained the whole situation and he did not care that his staff lost the paper work and even after paying for a year that I could not use the gym. No customer service at all I will never recommend this gym. read more

I signed up to westerly fitness and mid way through my membership I got deployed. I came back due to a red cross message and still paying my fees my contract ended in april. I was still being charged on my credit card through June. The passed Jan my mother march cousin may another cousin passed away which I explained to the owner he said i have to let them know 30 prior to me wanting to cancel pardon me i was out serving our country and tending to ill family members which I proved to him so I went to Navy Federal and they explained to me that they was wacking my card over and over again. " good thing i keep my play money in another account" Navy federal told me once declined always declined so if this happens to you i encourage you to dispute it. Oh I will spread the word to everyone I know in the military about what happen. 1 not military friendly 2 no compassion to or empathy to certain situations. 3 i will tell everyone of how you treat people. read more

A good gym but it seems to cater to the weightlifting crowd, always new lifting equipment but never any new cardio equipment. Watch out for the random fees that get deducted from your account, building expansion fees, equipment purchase fees, etc. read more

I signed the one year contract and was very intent on going (as everyone is I guess when they sign the contract) but it just wasn't for me. It was more of a convenient place for me to go instead of where I wanted to go. I don't care for Zumba classes. I wanted to use the machines. When I got on the machines they have no hook-up to listen to music or the television. I'm not the most technical person so no, I do not have a work-out playlist on my phone or anything. I don't care to listen to the grunts and moans of people working out around me. The woman at the front desk is very pleasant and helpful. She definitely seems to know what she is talking about and wants to help. The gym is just "meh". I'd rather not continue my contract and go back to the gym I was at prior... that I attended at least 4 times a week (I've been to Westerly Fitness maybe 4 times this whole contract). I understand having the personal trainer help you four times during your contract but for me it felt like pressure. Some do need that pressure and constant supervision but I just want to work-out at my own pace and be fit. Best advice... try each gym out first and don't jump into a contract because the sale sounded great. Take your time and do what's best for you. read more
