Some locations are better than others- I've found the best location is Norwich; always properly staffed, clean and tanning beds work. Wish they had a sauna at more than just EG location (if it's still there haven't been to that one in a while and have never been to Waterford location). I wish the tanning in Groton was still available, they advertise it but they can't use it per the fire marshall. read more

There is a young man named John who works at Renegade as not only an amazing personal trainer, but also group fitness instructor and on top of that he is always doing everything he can to keep the club clean. My husband has called NUMEROUS times to start the week free trial and no one ever answers the phones no matter what time of day he calls. He asked me to go by in person while he was at work and sign him up, but you need a key card to get into the building, and there's a sign that says not to hold the door open for people. This gym is the worst gym ever! Just like the others said they trap you into a contract and don't let you out of it without an immense amount of pain. Just like another reviewer, they charged my bank account under an old contract. They played dumb and I had bank refuse the charges. They then harassed me in letters, charged additional "club fees", said the certified letter wasn't 30 days prior to next billing (which they changed from the 15 to the 1 of the month) and charged me another month. The variety and quality of the equipment is top notch , and there is so much you never have to wait or be jammed up like other Gyms I go to . Do not join this gym. It is filthy. The bathrooms are never cleaned. The same piece of gum was in the urinal the entire time. The machine wipes are always empty. Instead they put out a couple of spray bottles and a roll of paper towels. There are no classes anymore. There is never anyone there. Im a founding member for $10/mo and our rates were never supposed to increase. Recently they tripled my rate to over $30/mo. I recently quit. I will be checking my statements every month because others have detailed how sleazy the ownership is. They often continue charging you even if you are successful in the arduous process of cancelling. I suspect they will be closing soon. Good riddance! read more

I had enjoyed being a member of this gym for 3 years. The location in Pawcatuck is clean, the machines are up to date and functional, there is plenty of equipment, and it's affordable. The real trouble - what makes this gym not worthwhile - is when I was preparing to move and wanted to cancel my membership. I have left gyms before with little issue - I would walk in and say "Hey this is my last day" and I have never had an issue because I had honored my contract. To cancel with Renegade though, it was a process. There was no information readily available online on how to cancel a membership (besides reviews by other frustrated customers). I had fulfilled my two year contract (and more), but despite this, when I contacted Renegade over the phone I was told I had to send a letter to the Waterford location in order to cancel my membership. I would still have to wait another 30 days upon them receiving my letter for them to actually cancel my membership. Renegade stands behind their policy and will continually reiterate that this is something you are informed of in the contract you sign. This is not where I take issue. It may be my own fault I signed up for a gym and didn't realize the process of cancellation outlined. My issue is that I had an enjoyable experience at Renegade and would love to be able to recommend it to others - but I cannot recommend a business that takes advantage of their members through the fine print of their contracts. I find their cancellation policy predatory. You are able to sign up and make a 2 year long financial commitment online or in person but you can't cancel with the same convenience even though you have honored your contracted time. The machines all seem pretty new and the gym always looks neat and clean. It's spread out, which is nice. I LOVE the hydro massage bed, totally worth it. The rates are very reasonable and it is one of the more inexpensive options in the area. The layout of the womens locker room is good. Normally I prefer to shower at home but the showers are so nice here that I don't mind. The vitamin waters are overpriced so I don't buy them here. They also don't close caption the TV's, which I don't understand. I've never seen that anywhere because many people like to watch a show or the news and listen to their Ipod. And the TV's on the machines have extremely limited channels and are organized oddly. By the time you scroll through everything in the slow manner it allows, you will have missed whatever is on. They have HGTV on the big TV's but not on the machines, which makes no sense to me. I would rather pay more in the monthly rate rather than a yearly fee that they take out of my account. Many people are going to forget about a random fee months later. There is no reason for this. It would make more sense if they just let you pay it when you signed up to be done with it. That was an unexpected surprise this month that could have been avoided. The staff here is nice but some of them need to be trained better. Mostly young girls working here. I was getting out of the shower recently when one of the female staff opened the curtain, no excuse for this ever happening. 2016 update - The staff here is friendly but continues to be incompetent. If you ask them to do anything that should take 5 seconds, if they see something shiny, you can forget it. Keep in mind, I only go when they are not busy, early in the afternoon. There is literally nothing going on. I have asked them to turn on the hydro bed, and if they are in the middle of something, they have already forgotten you as soon as you are out of sight. You need to babysit these kids, stay in sight. I ask someone today to turn the light off for me, which they always do within 10 seconds, as the hydrobed is not relaxing with a bright light in your face. Ten minutes later when I am leaving, I see the girl sitting at the computer doing nothing. She never turned off the light. I did point it out to her. These kids have zero work ethic and a complete inability to multitask. There is truly no easier job in the afternoon when no one is there. I have never had such an easy job in my entire life. The management needs to get it together. I do not plan to renew my contract. I have also never in my life had to cancel a gym membership by certified mail, how ridiculous. Great gym... Pawcatuck location is clean and new. Staff is great, trainers are amazing. Joined when first opened over two years ago, started with a trainer 2 years ago... tanning, water massage table, and yoga classes are what I use the most. The other classes are cool too. All the equipment is great... bathrooms are nice. Parking is pretty good... after 8pm it's like having your personal gym space, very few people there. Even during the day you never have to wait for a machine or circuit piece. Highly recommend it to brand new people just starting to workout or even people in great shape already! read more

I went to the Renegade in East Greenwich. DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM (at any location). It is a scam and they will make it impossible for you to leave the contract. I even reached out to the Better Business Bureau and they called me a liar. I will continue to tell everyone in the area to never go to a Renegade. There is a pandemic and travel restrictions that do not allow me to attended the facility and they won't allow a cancellation due to those reasons. As well, from my visits there the members and staff are not putting best foot forth to ensure everyone is safe. Lack of masks, and have not seen a single employee clean in there during facility hours. They seem to be ill equipped to operate even before The pandemic happened as these habits did not exist even before the pandemic. Staff never cleaned, they generally hide in corners on their phones. As far as the facilities go. East Greenwich location is nice. The only reason I went here was because they have some different equipment with the benches being able to move forward for lifting off, and some leg machines that most gyms don't have. But the locker rooms and other areas are dirty and just so old and you can tell that with the Renegade taking over this gym many things were just covered up. Lockers and showers are nasty! The staff is great although some of them come off rude and like they are always angry. The Cranston location Is soooooo much better on every level! Go there if you can! To get on about the stupid cancellation rules: I recently took a job offer down in KY. So my Wife and I are moving and in order to cancel they force you to send in a written LETTER! Is this 1812? They also won't let me cancel yet as I haven't found a permanent place down there. My job offer letter isn't proof enough!! This place is the worst. They will try to screw you in any way they can. If I want to cancel because of moving over 25 miles from any location they should let us! I will never go back. The only options they left me is to keep paying until my one year anniversary which is in 3 months. Or to wait and send in a letter once we are settled in. I've been a member of Pawcatuck Renegade for about a year now. The facilities are clean, the staff is friendly and there's a nice laid back atmosphere. Very rarely have I seen this place crowded. I signed up for personal training with Courtney, one of the gym's fitness experts. I would highly recommend her to anyone, whether you are a fitness veteran who's stuck in a plateau (as was the case with me) or a novice looking to get your feet wet. She is extremely knowledgeable and professional. This is a great place to work out, the poor reviews seem to be based on the cancellation policy. I signed up for 4 original memberships for the family at the Pawcatuck Renegade during their preopening. We were told at the time our memberships would never change as founding members as long as we never canceled. A couple of months ago all the memberships were charged at 3x the price without notice. We called to find out why the rates went up without any notice. They stated they could raise the rates anytime without notice as it was in the fine print. So, we promptly canceled, and we were told that we would no longer be charged. Wouldn't you know a month later we got charged again! Again, we called why did we get billed again and it wasn't canceled? We were told that we didn't give them enough time to cancel. More was said that can't be said here. Their customer service Sucks to put it nicely. When we told them we were going to post this on social media they laughed and pretty much dared me. God, I love the challenge! I've been to a number of gyms, but have never been to a gym when the instructor was late! The class was supposed to be 45 min long, but was cut to 30. I think she should have offered for us to stay an extra 5 min at least as there was not another class coming in for spin. I took The renegade strong class after and she said she would cut a few tracks in half for the sake of time. We finished 5 min early and again no class was scheduled after us?????! Unfortunately this is the only gym close to my mom that offers a specific weight class. Also it costs $16 to use the gym for the day...most rates are $10 to use a gym for the day. read more

The Staff is brutal at best, customer service is not in their vocabulary. The gym itself is clean but just average equipment. Here's a good one, the squat rack is in the so-called "Back Room" and you can't use it unless you upgrade your membership for another $20 per month. Been asking for a year to have an erg (rowing) machine to be brought into the cardio area and this is a No Can Do! Again, the ergs (rowing machines) are in the "Back Room", not the cardio room, did I mention it costs an Extra $20 per month to use the rowing machine. Don't even want to go into the personal trainers, I had one and it was a nightmare. That's when she actually kept her appointments. Need I say more. read more

I've only been to the Groton Renegade (Disclaimer). Don't waste your money here, you'll regret it. Pros: Large gym, more expansive selection than your typical planet fitness or smaller gym. Cons: Price, condition of equipment, hours, ambiguity in contract (only states "membership levels" without explaining what they include, so they'll tell you in person that you get X but you have nothing in writing stating that you are guaranteed this service for your respective membership level. Then they tell you that X isn't included and you need to pay extra.) Staff has been consistently rude since Day 2 (they were friendly for sign-up). They promised all new equipment; however, that has only been a half-truth. The cardio equipment is in very poor condition and many of the treadmills are down on any given day. The Wi-Fi is supposed to be included but it never works and the staff is never willing to help or fix it. The locker room is usually clean but not well maintained (locker doors falling off, always out of toilet paper). One time my credit card was replaced at no fault of my own (without enough time to give notice and switch my billing info) so they charged me $20 and sent the account into collection (was not more than a week or two overdue and they would not waive the fee). Last, they make it extremely cumbersome to cancel your membership. (Certified mail only, they add a month to your contract by pre-dating the auto-payment date and forcing you to pay a full month up front, but the contract runs from the auto-payment date and tell you that the first month was "prorated" even though it was paid 100% in full.) They do not care about you once you sign that contract and they make it abundantly clear. Planet Fitness is a much better bargain as it's cleaner, has new equipment, friendlier staff, better hours, a properly maintained locker room, costs less, has unlimited guest passes for black card members, and much more reasonable contracts. read more
