They have a change machine that works, functional bathrooms, air conditioning, two doors, side tables, and extra soap and stuff if you forgot yours. I also so feel frightened to be there at night.

So I stood there wondering if there was a start button or something...or if it was broken. I asked a lady who worked there to help me. After reimbursing me for my $1.50, she said "I learned something today. For these washers, you have to pull the quarter return back fast enough, otherwise it times out." Now we know.
