We flew in and out of the Knoxville airport on a recent trip to Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. One of the days there was a chance for severe storms and they accommodated my plane in a hangar for that night. As we headed back to the airport once the vacation was over the plane was already topped off and ready to go! Awesome staff and can't wait to visit this area again. All around great experience. It's situated in an older neighborhood called "Island Home" -- which is an island in the nearby river. The airport is used by private pilots with smaller planes. There's a nice lounge area with clean restrooms for those using the facility. If not for my son's lessons, I doubt I would ever be here. But, if you have a small plane or fly private, this is probably a good choice for Knoxville. No rental cars, food, or amenities. But, you could uber/lyft to downtown easily.

The terminal was recently renovated and is modern and clean with natural wood tones, stone work, and river-inspired flooring patterns, There was ample seating options. I wanted to get there early, to get my bags checked, go through security, secure, rental car, and get to the gate. Unfortunately, nobody was at the United ticket counter to check my bag. It wasn't until an hour later that I was able to check my bag. I'm told that things will improve once the construction is done. A special message to the man at the information desk, at the baggage claim area, who insisted that there were no signs indicating the rental car counters or at the baggage claim area. The picture I've posted with this message proves otherwise, as I insisted to him several times. I hope I return to this airport when they're done all the construction. I won't have to run back-and-forth through the Construction tunnel 3-4 times to get to the right rental car area. It was rather annoying.
