When you look at the price of the tour, you might be thinking wow! But let me tell you! This Rail Tour is so Worth Every Penny! We loved every moment! The staff was so nice, friendly and funny! The lil gift shop was well stocked and we bought snacks and drinks for the ride... upon our return we bought some really soft AVRT shirts and hats to match to remind us of our ride. Let me tell you about the ride! Oh my goodness! So we started off listening to a safety speech, which was so helpful! They showed us how to break, how to use the electric motor assist and the hand signals to use when we stop or if we have trouble. So helpful! We started out on our bike and the electric motor helped a lot! We would use it a little and the then pedal, repeat. We passed through fields and trees, streams and rivers! We even had to slow down for a sweet cow and her calf crossing the track! We saw a bunch of wild turkeys and an albino turkey! When we started up the mountain the motor assist really helped! The tunnel was amazing and it felt so fresh driving through it! We stopped at the top, just past the tunnel, and there we dismounted and we had time to wander around we walked down to the river and saw a trout! Ate our snacks at the picnic tables and then walked back up the hill and across the bridge to the tunnel, where our tour guide Holly took our picture and then told us about the history of the tunnel and how to date the rails! So cool! We then headed back to our bike"Gulf Wind" and headed back down to the depot. It was so much fun! All of us came back with giant smiles on our faces! We can't wait to come back in the Fall and ride again! read more

Me and two friends enjoyed the rail tour on a recent trip to Andrews, NC. The views are absolutely picturesque! Enjoy the countryside, rolling fields of grain, cows, streams and mountain scenery. We literally had to stop to let cows cross the track on the way down! This is a unique attraction that lets you see the area in a new way. We had a lot of fun and felt like kids peddling up and down the mountain. The hand carved tunnel at the top was fascinating! It's hard to imagine the scale and effort that went into creating it in the 1800s. I would definitely pack a snack and drink for your break. You have about 20 minutes to look around and take pictures. If you have small children, I'd recommend a small activity to keep them entertained. Here are a few logistics: They are serious about arriving 30 minutes before your scheduled ride. I would actually recommend arriving 45 minutes before if you want to use the restroom, apply sun screen, pack your bag, etc. They begin the safety speech and loading at exactly 30 minutes before. My advice would be to go into this with a good attitude. The pedal assist does really help, but you still need to be pedaling. The way up requires some effort, but going downhill is always easier. If you are not physically able to pedal, I'd recommend their rail cart that does not require pedaling. Our rail bike worked great the entire way up and down. The bike in front of us did experience some issues, but the staff was great at helping and multiple solutions. I saw this on Instagram. This is such a unique experience. The staff are freaking amazing they really make everything seem flawless and I know it is a lot of work. My suggestion to you is book it as soon as possible because those seats go FAST. We booked a month in advance and got the last 2 seats. WOOO that was close. So that is why I say book early so you get dates and times that you want. You show up 30 minutes before your tour leaves. They give you the instructions of how the bikes work and they make sure you are comfortable in your seat before taking off. Then they stop a little way down the line make sure everyone is comfortable one more time before taking you on the most unique adventure. What BEAUTIFUL scenery!! This was a surprise trip for my husband and I am the biggest winner we both enjoyed it Immensely!!!! Make sure you pack a picnic and drinks because they stop for a 45 minutes and you get to wonder around and get in the water and play and eat your picnic and have your electrolytes. I highly suggest electrolytes and stay hydrated, It gets hot. Everyone of all skill levels can do this. They have a car that is electric that you can ride along with the bikes if you cannot bike. That is why I say it is for EVERYONE. I HIGHLY suggest this to all my friends and even my enemies because everyone should experience this much joy once in their life. Did I mention the scenery was amazing and beautiful. Well it is and if you just need to book your bike rail trail tour sooner than later and do it fast. This was a unique experience, it does take minute to get to the country side. Views were so beautiful and the gentleman who started us up was great at telling the story of how the tunnel was done. Bathrooms at station and at top were clean! Price was a little steep for such a simple attraction. Definitely something that can be done at ease because the pedal assist is great. We did bring a small cooler because when you get to the top they give you about 45 mins to look around and take pictures and there is a picnic area- which we didn't get to do a lot off because a storm was rolling in so we only stayed about 5 mins. read more

Had a wonderful time even if our chain broke. We had the best time. The men were all so pleasant and helpful on the ride. Our chain broke and we were a little disappointed that they didn't carry extra chains with them but we got on the other car and headed off to lunch. The area that you eat in is very pretty with a stream. Just make sure you watch out for poison ivy. I didn't see any but it is the woods. We got back to our cart and they fixed the chain (because someone brought one out) and we had a blast peddling back to base. We were also lucky and found a spike (1910).... They told us they go out and collect them up and then give them to the kids. How very sweet. We also went through the hand carved out tunnel. One customer brought his ukulele and he was playing it in the tunnel. His voice was beautiful. Staff in the gift shop were great too. I wish they would create a few more logo things for us to buy. They also have clean porta-potties with hand sinks. Great fun! don't forget to tip them. read more

Terrible customer service. The concept of a good experience is there, but the execution was horrendous. Before the ride even started, they moved us four times to four different cars, which is negligible, but becomes an issue when we discovered on the ride uphill that the battery assist on this cart did not work. There are two staff members at crossings in the first quarter mile, but after that, not a single employee until the very top, so when we discovered the issue a half mile in, we could either sit there for 15 minutes in the sun waiting for the conductor train and hold up all the carts behind us, making them sit in the sun and ruining their experience too or pedal to the top. After pedaling two miles to the top, we told the staff and they said they forgot to turn the motor on before the ride! They claimed they fixed it but two minutes into the ride downhill the battery assist turned off again. When we reached the bottom, we told the owner or manager about the issue, but she immediately began to argue with us saying it was our fault because there's always an employee with us and we should've just told them, even after we proved the closest employee was the conductor 15 minutes behind us. Absolutely wrong way to handle the situation as a business, not a single apology or admission of fault by the owner, even though the employees admitted their mistake. Highly recommend avoiding this experience, simply for customer service by the owner or manager. read more

Our group had a good time but it was what we made of it. We seen the advertisement on Facebook and it looked nothing like the video. It isn't anything special to look at. There is a couple creeks you go by. If you want pretty creeks stop on the side of the road driving up...they are free. If you are not prepared to pedal don't go on the pedal bike...ride the train. The front rail bike broke down and the assist stopped working. We had to wait for a good 20+ minutes. We were 4 or 5 rail bikes back and we kept saying that all the front bikes could push the front one. Well, they just gave up and sat there. If you break down there wasn't staff to help. It's unique but riding through pastures is what you will get. There is a tunnel you stop at and there are picnic tables at the bottom of the gully. If you have mobility issues (walking on uneven surfaces) this is not the tour for you. The staff was mostly nice except an older women in the gift shop. Rude with attitude. Could have ended the day differently. For the price...I would say pass this one. read more

If our ride had taken place under perfect weather conditions, I might have given it 3 stars at best. We booked a rail bike for 4 riders at over $64 per rider which is overpriced for such a short ride. Buyer beware -- this company is not flexible when it comes to refunds or rescheduling. I've reached out to them multiple times and have yet to receive a response. Here's what happened during our scheduled ride: We arrived 30 minutes early, as required. While waiting, it began to rain -- and not just a drizzle, but with thunder as well. The company started selling rain ponchos for $4 to many riders. Later, when the rain didn't let up, they began tossing ponchos out for free to anyone who wanted one. They postponed the ride briefly to see if the thunder would subside, but when it continued raining, they went ahead and loaded us onto the rail bikes anyway. I was uneasy about being on the tracks in those conditions, but I trusted that the staff wouldn't put us in harm's way. When we boarded, my friend asked one of the employees (who we assumed would be riding along) where he would sit, and he responded, "I'd like to ride on your lap." Highly inappropriate and unprofessional. The overall atmosphere among the staff was unsettling -- they reminded me of transient carnival workers, and at the halfway point, they gathered around smoking cigarettes while we waited. On the way back, the rain poured so hard that visibility was almost zero. We couldn't see the riders ahead of us or their hand signals to slow down. It felt unsafe. Once this company has your money, they simply don't care -- and they won't respond to your concerns afterward. read more

This was a fun and different thing to do! My husband and I and some friends did this and it was so much fun! It was so easy and not much effort to pedal the track carts. Total miles round trip is 9 and the scenery is breathtaking. Next time I want to take my kids and grandkids! read more

So much fun! Beautiful scenery, even the cows along the way! I love the options to ride. I rode the Passenger Cart, with cushioned seats that swivel and a cover. Feel like we were duped. The videos online make this ride seem so beautiful. But in between the moments of greenery and nature are dilapidated trailer parks, mounds of garbage, a homeless encampment, a propane company releasing the worst smell and abandoned buildings and campers that could easily pose as meth labs. I mean, on our tour a shirtless mountain man -no joke - stepped out on his porch and start squealing at us as we pedaled by. Not a wave or a hello, but a holler straight out of an online meme.......probably has a good stash of homemade moonshine somewhere but that wasn't the intention of our trip. At the halfway mark they bring you through a tunnel to a small clearing with picnic tables along the creek. Warning, the clearing and tables are down in a gully. This area is in desperate need of some upkeep. A weed eater, some bug spray and a damp cloth could do wonders. But what really caused disappointment for us is within just the first rotation of pedaling, before we left the venue, our chain snapped and broke off. This chain is connected to the shaft / drive motor. Instead of asking us to step off and offer a refund, we were asked to pedal uphill 2 miles without the support of electric. They tried connecting us to the bike behind us but then their battery died and the older couple just didn't have it in them - I don't blame them. At the 1.5 mile mark, exhausted and dripping in sweat, and at the request of the group attached to us, we stopped. We exited the bike and waited while they took the bike off the rails, allowed others to move ahead and then connected us behind the caboose, which now meant we were towed the remaining trip with exhaust directly in our faces. Full transparency, after speaking to staff after our return, they did give a partial refund which was much appreciated. All in all, this adventure has potential. The concept is great and the business is only 2 years old so I imagine they are just going through some growing pains. That being said, I wanted to give an honest description of our experience. Thankfully our other wonderful adventures in the area outweighed this one disappointing experience. read more

Our family had a great time! We had a party of 8, our battery died about 1/4 of the way up, and the owners were so quick to help us out. They were so kind. Then our family members ahead of us also had their battery die. We attached to them, and continued our journey. We made it almost to the top, but had to be pushed up the last 100 yards. The owners made it fun, and we enjoyed stopping for a few moments to take in the beauty of the trail. I packed a picnic basket and tablecloth for a nice treat at their tables at the top. We took photos, made memories. The kids skipped rocks in the creek. We saw cows and turkeys close to the tracks. I only wished it lasted longer so we could take it all in! I would highly recommend this to families with kids, and anyone looking for a unique instaworthy adventure! read more

We were very excited for our trip with the Andrews Valley Rail Tour. It was my dear mother's birthday and she was very excited to go. We got there and upon checking in, my son was a pound under the weight limit and the Woman in charge pointed out loudly in front of everyone how much he weighs and how it might be an issue. She then told us to go to a certain car because of "the weight issue" (also in front of everyone.) This was just the beginning of our problems. Our car's electric assist function was not working so we had to rely only on pedaling when everyone else got to cruise along nicely. They told us it was flat and easy and that we wouldn't have much of an issue at all as we are very active and bike often. It was extremely difficult and we felt as though we were paying a hefty amount of money for a tough workout more than anything. The people there did not know how to fix the car whatsoever and were very unprofessional. I would not go back and do not recommend. read more

After watching the video my husband was really excited to try something new. So we made reservations. Once there, all the persons who had reserved for that time were given a brief description or what the experience would be like. After everyone was ready we started the trip. We were the last bike in the group. Before we got past the parking lot our bike chain came off the rail. The staff member quickly came to repair it. We started off once again within 3 minutes it happened again. He tried to re align the chain but after a little while, it happened again. We were attached to the caboose and were pushed the rest of the trip. On the way back we were pulled. The experience was a bike tow rather than a bike ride and the views were not "spectacular". There was really no "top of the mountain " but the end of the rail at a picnic spot that was like any other spot in the mountains without the view. The staff did everything they could to help but it was definitely not what we expected. Ours was not a unique experience, others on the tour had their assisted pedal motor breakdown and had to be towed the rest of the trip. All in all it was a disappointment. We went in September before the leaves had started changing colors. Maybe a Fall experience might be worth it minus all the mechanical problems. We drove 2 hours to get there and would cautiously recommend the experience even if you were half an hour away. There needs to be better maintenance or inspection of the bikes if they are going to be used for the trip. We did not ask for a refund so I cannot attest to what the outcome would have been. I want to emphasize that the staff was fantastic and tried as hard as possible to make it worth it given the difficulties. read more
