This was my sixth trip down the Grand Canyon with Western Rivers, and my husband's eighth trip. Mom and dad add additional trips to make nine or ten family trips down the Grand Canyon, starting with burro exits in 1981. I guess it's a family thing now to integrate new members with a Canyon trip and test the mettle of the young ones coming up in life. Instead of burro rides, the helicopter ride out of the Canyon is a big thrill to look forward to at the end of the trip. We always travel with Western Rivers as they are meticulously well organized, they put ice in the lemonade and we think they have the very best river guides. It goes without saying that all river guides in the Grand Canyon are extraordinarily awe inspiring, and we marvel at their skill, competence, endurance and expertise. We used to sleep on tarps in the sand; Western is innovative and created comfortable mesh cots that now lift us off the sand. We didn't use the tents, but we do like the chairs. We like that Western has innovative rafts that allow you to ride the snout, face forward on the ice coolers, or relax in the relatively dry comfort of the "chicken coop" in back. Food tastes better outdoors after a day exposed to the elements, and the river guides never fail to exceed expectations with delicious nutritious and well rounded hearty fare. Even the coffee is amazing! The guides have always been great at offering a variety of well paced and well spaced activities, from frolicking in waterfalls, to exploring cultural sites to invigorating hikes after breakfast. We love it when the guides spontaneously break out in song or begin reciting poetry, adding to the beauty, grandeur and magic of any given moment. The boat is quite steady to handle the rapids well. And you can sit on part of the boat that feel more sturdy. I was invited to tag along on a trip to the Grand Canyon as it was on my mother-in-law's bucket list to go to the bottom. She found a way to do that without taking the long trek by foot. All we had to do was ride a bus from Vegas, take a small plane and then hop on a couple minutes long helicopter ride! All leading up to the trip, I was anxious as we received waivers to sign and I was told of the unfortunate things that can happen in the canyon. I'd never done anything so extreme before as I'm not much of an outdoorsy person. This trip changed me though. Floating down the river and being explained all the history by the river guide, was such an exceptional experience. I was enjoying it all and then we had to set up camp. As a woman, it was so nice to have a female river guide there to coax me thru some of the hygienic details of being in such a remote place. The sand everywhere and big ants and brush to walk through made me wonder what I got myself into but I made it through the night thanks to the amazing camp set up (easy to set up tent and cots with a cozy sleeping bag) and having an incredible warm meal cooked for us by the river guides. It wasn't until the next day when we stopped for a cliff jumping opportunity and I had to face some more hygienic details that the river guide helped me through that something just clicked for me and a mental barrier came down. I didn't care anymore and fully embraced the experience of being in such a beautiful place with amazing people. I jumped off the 15-20 ft cliff, hit my thighs on the water a bit, got water up my nose and felt the rush of the cold water... and loved it! We proceeded to the river on boat through some insane rapids with backstory told to us and all. Then made our way to another stop to take a short hike to see a waterfall. After that it was time to set up camp and this time we got lucky to get a much more enjoyable camp ground with not much brush and ants to walk through. By this point I'm feeling bittersweet as it's our last night and I just got the hang of things. I'm enjoying the people we're surrounded by as much as the nature. We celebrated someone's birthday with two to die for cakes made by none other than the river guides! They seriously need to make a cookbook because every meal they made us was mouth watering and I'd eat it over what I got at home any day! TLDR // Long story short.. Take the 3-day trip no matter who you are. If I could do it, you could do it. It changed me, a city girl who never camped, now a self-certified outdoors girly. Your river guides will be the most amazing people who cook like there's no tomorrow! It's not just their cooking though, they have so much knowledge and passion about the Canyon and what they do. Let me just say it: this was not just a trip--it was a full-blown Grand adventure down the Colorado River, complete with laughter, rapids, jaw-dropping scenery, and... a cobbler miracle. From the moment we hit the river, our crew--Lucky, Steph, Caden, and Jace--made sure we felt safe, informed, and seriously entertained. They learned all our names faster than I learn my Wi-Fi password, which made everything feel personal and welcoming right from the start. Now let's talk food--because wow. This wasn't your standard "camping chili and mystery granola" situation. We're talking real, delicious, belly-happy meals. There was a minor tragedy involving a doomed pecan pie (RIP), but fear not--Jace casually whipped up a cobbler from scratch like some kind of wilderness wizard. And yes, it was delicious. Steph captained our raft like she was born in the whitewater ("like a boss" doesn't even do her justice). Lucky kept everything running smoothly while charming the kids and cracking jokes, and Caden serenaded us with his ukulele one night after dinner. If that's not luxury river life, I don't know what is. We had two rafts, 14 guests each, and by the end of the trip it felt like a big, sun-kissed family reunion (minus the awkward cousins). A magical journey - Having experienced the Grand Canyon from the rim and from the air, descending into its depths to travel the Colorado River has always been a dream of mine. Everything about the trip was amazing, floating down the river the grandeur and spectacular beauty all around you is something I wish everyone could experience, yet I'm glad that only a few get to, because it is virtually untouched by man. Every sight is a wonder. when you think you've seen the most beautiful sight, you come around a bend in the river and once again you are in awe of the majestic beauty of the canyon. Every sight is one you want to keep with you and although I took hundreds of photos to share with friends and family, no photograph can truly capture the pure unaltered beauty seen first hand. Each rapid is its own storyteller, drawing you in and spitting you out. Each camp-sight a welcoming place to rest from the day and sleep under the most amazing sky filled with stars you never knew existed. Words cannot capture the magic you experience on this trip. And I'd be remiss not to mention the people, the other passengers along for the journey and the crew who guide you, sharing history and anecdotal stories of those who came before us. Our crew, led by Mairead and her team, Steven, Meg and Josh made the journey unforgettable. Mairead led us down the river with precision, exuding confidence with every move. Steven drove the second of our two boats (the raft I rode) with the precision only someone who knows the river in his soul could do. Meg, the swamper (need to find a nicer title for such a beautiful soul) on our boat was so full of life and joy, sharing knowledge, stories and even crafts! This is not a vacation, it's a lifetime adventure. A group of 13 of us did the 3 night trip just this past week. Starting in Vegas everything was easy at the host hotel. They had a room to store luggage that is not going on the trip for $10 a day or you can leave items in your car if you drive to the hotel. Just make sure you have somewhere to leave your car keys because having them end up at the bottom of the Colorado River is not a fun way to end your trip. The small prop plane ride was not my favorite part, but the views were amazing (you fly over Hover Dam) and the rest of my crew loved it. I just tend to get motion sick so be prepared with Zofran or Dramamine if that's you too. The Bar 10 Ranch staff (while not directly affiliated) were also amazing. You can ride horses and skeet shoot all included in the cost of your trip. Sleeping arrangements are covered wagons, a bunk room, or outside under the stars on their upper deck. We did not know there would be power there so having outlets to charge up our phones (for pictures) one last time before heading into the canyon was a nice surprise. The helicopter ride into the canyon was epic in itself. I got the lucky seat in the front with the pilot and wow! The rest of the group said the back was just as cool as we banked down into the canyon like this guy was on a military mission to save the rafters. Once we landed, we met our river guides for the trip. My group of 13 had RD and Paul. The other raft with us had Lucky and Chip. These four guides worked together like I've never seen co-workers work. A well oiled machine. Having at least 50 years combined experience between the guides was something I was not expecting and their stories had us rolling. These guys were probably on the river when the real covered wagons were rolling through ; ). I'd read the reviews about the food prior to going on the trip and was skeptical. I have no idea how this group can get it done, but each meal was delicious and snacks were in between. I've had restaurants that can't figure out how to make a medium rare steak and these guides nailed in down in the canyon without an actual restaurant. If you want something other than water and lemonade throughout the day, taking the hydration powder sticks is a good option. Also if you take your own beverages don't expect ice cold drinks. The team is great about putting them in the water to keep cool, but don't be a prima dona and expect ice cold. Remember where you are. My husband and I chose to sleep under the stars without a tent. The first night there were no insect issues. The second night I did get bite quite a few times but bugs do LOVE me so keep that in mind. Friends of ours slept in tents and it can be warm in them at night so you pick what you're willing to deal with. You will have to help get your stuff on and off the boats. They do a "fire line" and have everyone line up and pass bags, cots, and chairs down the line each night and every morning for camp. Don't be a wimp and disappear expecting others to do your work for you. The last day there were no more rapids so we didn't have to wear the life jackets and the views were probably the best in my opinion. By about 10am we met a jet boat that took us the rest of the way down the river to meet up with the bus. Even the jet boat driver stopped to point things out and tell stories. Side Note: There is no shade on either the rafts or the jet boat so make sure you're prepared with hats and sun shirts with hoods. It gets hot down there. You will then get on what they call the "dirt bus" which takes you about 10 miles up to the paved highway where you transfer onto the fancy bus with TV's and nice seats. The dirt bus is almost like an excursion itself. I don't think most people can say they've "drifted" in a bus lol. The lady driver has skill! The one part of the trip no one in my group was thrilled about was the driver played a thriller movie on the way back to Vegas (The others) and it was loud. Everyone is exhausted and happy from the trip and the movie has screams quite frequently that kept waking people up that were trying to nap. A movie is nice since the drive is about an hour and a half but maybe something slightly more relaxing. You will come back exhausted there's no way around it. If you take time off work I recommend taking an extra day to recover. It's a good exhausted though. You will feel in awe of the canyon and what you were able to do. Lastly I can't say enough about our guides. Lucky, Chip, RD, and Paul had individual personalities that were genuine. They always had a good attitude (even with grumpy people who didn't sleep well). They are amazing physically, cooking talents, entertainers, and make you feel safe the whole time. I hope they are able to train future guides to be just like them. Thanks again guys! read more

This month I joined Western River Expeditions with seven of my friends for a three day experience rafting/camping along the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Absolutely the adventure of a lifetime. Magnificent views, exciting rapids, great food and guides. At first I was apprehensive - the adventure isn't cheap - but when you consider everything the trip includes - bus rides, helicopter rides, small airplane rides, the river trip, the food - honestly I don't know how this company makes any money. Guides were kind, knowledgable and clearly put safety first - both for our benefit and the benefit of the environment and ecosystem around us. The meals were fresh, plentiful - home made "cowboy style" in an outdoor kitchen. We learned about the geologic history of the Grand Canyon as well as some fun tales about early settlers in the area. The company is very upfront about the physical requirements for the trip and I think the videos they post for the trip itself and photographic tips are honest and accurate. Our trip consisted of 28 people - two rafts with 14 people each. You never felt crowded and in our three days I never saw another raft or tour company, it felt like we had the river to ourselves. If you're not sure if rapids or a seven day trip is for you - I would absolutely encourage considering this three day trip. It was wonderful to see the sights but also nice no to feel like my skin had to endure seven days in a very dry, sun-soaked environment. I absolutely recommend Western River Expeditions! read more

I arranged a trip for 5 friends, but was diagnosed with a herniated disc that required surgery a few weeks before the trip. My friends continued on the trip, and I asked for a credit for the following year, when I would take my family. However, despite bringing or offering to bring 9 people in total, the company would not give me a credit. Just absolutely no compassion or empathy for a difficult situation. What an amazing family trip this was. From the moment we arrived at the airport and had our last moments of communication with the outside world to the end of the trip on the bus on the way back home we were constantly entertained, having fun, and impressively fed. The plane ride to the bar 10 ranch was filled with amazing views, the bar 10 ranch was bustling with energetic and happy employees showing us around to all of the fun activities on the ranch including horseback riding, skeet shooting, atvs, and tons more. The helicopter ride into the Grand Canyon was bucket list worthy and the rafting trip itself was top notch. The guides were all extremely friendly and made the trip even more enjoyable. Each day was filled with sights and stops that were entertaining and educational. Every meal on the river was delicious combined with memorable sceneries. The camping experience was also impressively organized from the equipment provided to us to the general set up of each site just moments after we would arrive. I had the time (and birthday) of my life! Sometimes, you don't realize you have expectations and then it becomes obvious when you're in the middle of the event. This FAR exceeded any thoughts or dreams of what I had hoped for my trip!! I am SO glad I went. Not many takers for the front and center position on the raft, so I got to spend 100% of my time up there! What a blast! On top of that, the weather was perfect and the food incredible! Captains, Jeff and Ronnie are the Bomb! It's hard to believe that all the food is prepared from scratch! But the real magic is in the relationships forged and deepened. The escape from being tethered to technology adds the most amazing backdrop for a hard reset, reminding you of what matters most in this life. This was our 2nd time rafting the Colorado river via Cataract canyon. We had the same Captain, Shad along with Avery and Sabina. You will not find a hard-working crew, more kind more giving. They really go the extra mile. When we wrapped it last time it was 10,000 ft.³ per minute this time 30,000 ft.³ per minute. It was very extreme very exciting and we feel very very safe with these people. The food was outstanding, the gear was perfect and new. From sleeping bag to cot and tent This is money well spent. My wife and I, and our 4 boys (17, 15, 13, 10) recently got back from the 4 day Grand Canyon trip and it was AMAZING! I would highly recommend doing this trip if you are looking into it. Pros: * Amazing scenery all day every day * Loved going to the Bar10 Ranch and getting that experience * The helicopter ride down into the Grand Canyon was super fun * Flying the private plan from Boulder airport to Bar10 Ranch gave you a birds eye view of how majestic the Grand Canyon really is. * Everything is thought out and planned to a T. * The guides were super helpful with keeping everyone safe, fixing really good food, and lots of knowledge on the canyon. * Sleeping outside under the stars. You have the option for a tent but we chose to sleep out under the stars. (I will say this was probably some of my families least favorite part but we definitely are not the roughing it type) * All of us being without our cell phones Things to know: * Bring snacks. It says they provide snacks, which they did typically once a day. But we have 3 teenagers and they are always hungry. * If I did it again I would bring a deck of playing cards to give us a family activity to do at night during camp. * Bring a travel fishing pole. My son brought a hand line and caught fish left and right. * If you want a more adventurous rafting experience then the 6 day has a lot more aggressive rapids. The 4 day had 2-3 big rapids but that was about it. It's definitely a more laid back trip. read more

My 6-day Grand Canyon river rafting trip with Western River Expeditions was truly life-changing. The days were full of adventure--riding rapids, hiking into hidden side canyons, and sleeping under the stars. Being completely unplugged from my phone for a week was such a gift, and it made it easy to connect with the group on a deeper level. By the end, strangers felt like family, and our group cold plunge on the last morning was the perfect way to wrap it all up. Our guides Marc, Landon, and Brendan were nothing short of incredible. They worked tirelessly to make sure everything ran smoothly, yet still had the energy to be fun, kind, and endlessly knowledgeable about the river and the canyon. Their passion for what they do is contagious. Marc was always three steps ahead of everyone, making sure we were safe and had the best experience. It was a joy to see his goofy side when he would slide in with jokes and we all enjoyed when he would share different stories and poetry that drew you closer to the canyon and each other. Landon was so fun and intentional with getting to know the group and being present with our experience. He even joined us for the group cold plunge in the river the last morning, not to mention made the best chocolate cake on our last night! Brendan was so fun and kind- he brought his personal black light and spent many nights with the group searching to find scorpions in the dark! The trip experience was so much better because of him! I came home with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime. The trip was so deeply inspiring it had me considering quitting my job to become a river guide. If you're on the fence about going- don't hesitate. This is an experience that will stay with you forever. read more

Epic experience! Absolutely amazing and I can't wait to do it again. I did the 4 day trip and I am compelled to do the 7 day trip next.

I randomly booked this Southwest Sampler vacation on a wild and crazy whim for my family {husband & me (53), son & wife (27 & 29), and daughter (21)}. It includes hiking in Arches, a wild sunset ride in a hummer over some insane terrain at a place called Hell's Revenge, rafting 20 miles on the Colorado River over the span of 2 days, and camping by the river literally under the stars on a cot in an isolated, remote area somewhere near Moab, UT. I'm not particularly outdoorsy, but I do like canoeing in NC. Camping is typically a no-can-do for me, but Western River made this the greatest vacation of my life. My family had an absolutely incredible time. The guides were FUN, KNOWLEDGEABLE, and the most hard-working young people I've seen in ages. They cooked delicious food for us - grilled chicken breasts, green beans, bread, CAMP CAKE!? - not the standard camp fare of hotdogs. During the rafting on the last day, we docked our rafts and ate a delicious AUCE lunch at a cowboy lodge, they made breakfast, gave us snacks, every need was taken care of. They gave us each a cool water bottle as well as an insulated stainless steel coffee bottle for our morning breakfast. I wouldn't change a thing. Book it now and make memories to last a lifetime! Oh I almost forgot- the 2 day stay at the SpringHill Suites in Moab was wonderful! Beautiful pool, clean and spacious rooms, friendly and accommodating staff, free breakfast buffet, fruit water in the lobby 24/7 - all top notch! read more
