We did the half day rafting boat on the Colorado river through Horseshoe Bend. It was a blast and Bill our guide was so sweet and full of so much information. We got to doc at one place to get out and do a little hike to learn more. They had water to refill your bottles and gave everyone a Gatorade on the ride back. Don't forget to take lunch or goodies, cause you can eat on the boat. Instead of taking the bus in from Page, we camped out right there and met them at the doc. So glad we ended up doing the rafting. This was one of the most fantastic adventures I've ever had. It was expensive, yes, but all along the way you could see where your money went. The logistics made the trip flawless from the airport pickup, shuttles, flights and return. The GUIDES, Griffin Rasmussen, Scott Jones, Lori Anderson, and Emily Popke made the trip fun, safe, educational, and exciting. The knowledge of geology and lore of the area was evident in all the guides. Emily gave extra little presentations about the formations and you could feel her passion. All the guide made their passion for this sacred area evident. The FOOD was so much more than i expected. Prime rib and smoked Salmon on the river!!??. The meals were delicious and well thought out. We did the half day float through Glen Canyon in March. The half day tour takes up much of the day - we had to be there at 9:30 to check in, there was an info/safety session, you go through security, then the bus ride to the starting spot right by the dam. They are pretty efficient with loading/unloading the bus and then loading the floats, I think we had around 20 people on our float and it wasn't at all crowded. We had food in a backpack - hardshell coolers are not allowed - and there's a bathroom at about the halfway stop (petroglyph beach) and then again before you board the bus for the hour-ish bus ride back to Page. It's very impressive to see the dam and the canyon from this perspective, but our tour guide was kind of a dud. It was her first solo tour and while she had the mechanics of guiding the float, she didn't have much to say about what we were seeing. I wouldn't expect a running commentary, but her comments were few and far between and the last hour of the float actually felt really long. It's not an inexpensive tour and, apparently, the guide can make it or break it. read more

Definitely a trip of a lifetime. The river and inner canyon is a beauty you should see. We just finished a 12 day hybrid oar/paddle trip in possibly the worst heat of the year. Our guides are outstanding... Shout-out to Kale, Taylor, Devon, Lori, Nick, and Griffin-- working tirelessly from before dawn to after dark, they were professional, positive, informative, extremely skilled and always helpful. Above and beyond. Outstanding and sometimes amazing food: breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. We had excellent transportation... shuttle busses, airplanes and even a helicopter ride.... Some of the cots are wonky. Some of the tables need to be replaced. Maybe the packing guide could be revised... and specifically modified for extreme heat. I highly recommend this trip. read more

I have to leave a Yelp review for WRA after our 12 day oar experience. Trip of a lifetime, truly, and I feel so incredibly blessed and grateful to have been able to participate, and to have had such a great crew with us. Matt, Phil, Cam, Lorenzo, Shy, and Wilbur were all fantastic guides, and wonderful people whom I enjoyed getting to know. We dealt with hail, freezing cold, blistering heat, sandstorms, and everything in between. What a time! We did have nice warm temps for the majority of the trip, and lots of swimming. Scenery is incredible, and no words can describe how one feels in the midst of such a spectacular wilderness. I have a dairy allergy and the guides were gracious and wonderful accommodating me. I am so grateful for their efforts. The whitewater sections were handled seriously and expertly. We were in such great, skilled hands! I'd suggest some new tarps and dry bags soon, but otherwise the gear provided was adequate, comfortable, and appreciated while we were on the river. (I recommend bringing a thermarest pad, if you have one, to lay on top of your cot. We were very comfortable with that set up, and a small pillow.) I also want to give a shout out to Bonnie, in the office, for being so helpful, and also to WRA's food director, Rachel, for patiently going through the menu with me so I knew I didn't have to bring a ton of stuff along. HORRIBLE! WORST TOUR GUIDE EVER! There were three boats in our group. Halfway through the trip the sky unleashed on us. Horrible lightning, thunder and huge, cold rain drops. One of the tour guides (not ours) had cheap plastic ponchos for his whole boat! When we asked SCOOTER where ours, as he was putting his full rain suit on, he said they are too expensive and people steal them. We were dumfounded by this statement. They are 50 cents MAX. THEN he proceeded to just go slow and give the tour! What kind of company allows this?! Do they not check the radar before they let a boat go out? I had to speak up and ask why we were going so slow and they whole boat chimed in. He then agreed to go faster and get us back to dry land. THEN we had to sit on a cold bus for the hour ride back to our car. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! Would never wish our experience on anyone else! read more

I just came back from a six day oar/paddle trip of the upper canyon and I had to write this review to show my gratitude and appreciation for WRA. I would highly recommend this option to anyone who enjoys the outdoors. I have spent most of my life, vacations, and summers in parts of the Grand Canyon but have never been able to experience the Canyon like this. It was truly inspiring to watch the Canyon walls rise up around us as we traveled day by day. I traveled alone and I'm not always one for many words, but I always felt included and welcomed by the guides and other group members. All the guests on the trip were equally in awe of the Canyon and it was great to have people who appreciated it. Personally, I believe oar trips are the way to go as compared to motorboat trips, as they are quiet, peaceful, and allow the guests to really take in the beauty of their surroundings. Each boat carried about four guests, which made it very comfortable and relaxing. Additionally, there was a paddle boat which Drew directed. That was really fun because guests were able to paddle through rapids. Most of all, the guides were amazing. Our boatmen were Erica, Adam, Chris, Drew, Joe, Will, Chy, and Neil. They worked continuously from when they woke up (before the sun was up) until everyone went to bed (after the sun went down). They did so with enthusiasm and it was clear they cared a lot about the Canyon and were proud of their jobs. They not only rowed for many hours a day, but also entertained, cooked, and cleaned for 24 guests. We went on hikes each day which they all guided. Each boatman had unique personalities and interests. Some liked to share history, boatman tales, flowers, or geology. They were all extremely knowledgeable about the Canyon. For example, any time I was near Joe I could ask him about a flower and he would know exactly what it was and interesting information about it; Erica or Will knew all about the geology of the canyon, etc. I noticed another person in the reviews complained that they had to set up their own cot and bed arrangements for the night and wash their own dishes, which I almost laughed at. The guides worked tirelessly all day, certainly it is not asking a lot to set up ones own sleeping arrangements and wash their own plates (which takes all of three minutes). This is an outdoor adventure I would and will recommend to anyone who wants to be able to appreciate the Canyon. Truly an experience unlike any other. read more

We did a 6 day motor raft trip with WRA . The Canyon is awe inspiring, the rapids are exciting and fun, the food is simple but hearty and well prepared and guides are friendly, funny, skilled, and hard working. The reason for the 3 stars is the condition of the company provided gear. The sleeping bags are brand new and fine for the purpose, but the cots are quite beat-up and should be replaced. They state that sleeping pads are provided, but the only pads consist of the seat pads from the raft and there aren't enough for everyone. The ammo boxes are a little rusty and not completely water proof and the dry bags leaked even when properly sealed. I can't speak for the tents, because the guides discouraged us from using them. The given reason was that we would be miserable in them because of the heat and that the time and energy expended dealing with them would cause unnecessary delays. This brings up another consideration for anyone deciding what trip to take. The 6 day trip is the shortest whole canyon tour offered. Because of this, there was a definite atmosphere of hurry in regards to loading/unloading the rafts and setting up /breaking down camp. We had long days on the raft with quick stops and limited time in camp. This isn't a complaint against the company or crew, it's just the reality of doing a 6 day tour. I assume an 8 day trip would be more relaxed. I'll end by saying that the issues with the gear in no way ruined the over all experience of the trip which was beautiful, exciting, fun, and rewarding. read more

We had a time of a lifetime. I /we loved all the guides. We did the six day oar trip Phantom ranch to Whitmore Wash. The water was way up 4-29-2023 and wild. We had a wonderful group of 15 and food was delicious also. I found the camping to be pretty much glamping and very easy and comfortable we only took what was on the list they gave us and we wanted for nothing. Some might call it roughing it but the minimal set up is easy and sleeping under the stars was very great to me. I could have kept going the day we helicoptered out. Worth every penny!!!!! read more

My wife and I (late 50s) took a 6am Horseshoe Bend trip in mid-September as part of a week in the Grand Canyon area. It was a highlight of our trip. We didn't quite know what to expect so I want to fill in a few blanks here. The full tour includes about 30 minutes of relevant safety instruction at the store; there are bathrooms available there. Next is a 30 minute bus ride on a nice tour bus through an access tunnel to the base of the dam. You then walk down some ramps to board the boats, and the group is divided among the boats. You are given hardhats to wear for the walk just in case some idiot throws a penny off the bridge overhead, but you turn it back in before boarding the boat. There are seats on the sides of the boat and in the middle. On our boat everyone started on the sides, but then moved a bit between the middle and side seats as necessary to get better photos. There is no roof on the boat. You can place bags or coats on the floor under your feet. The boat captain stands in back, maneuvers the boat via motor, and explains everything on the tour. It is easier to hear if you sit near him, but all the seats are about the same. The water is calm, cold, and clear; the boat speed is slow. The only waves are from the wake of a fishing boat motoring quickly upstream, that is rare. For nearly the entire tour you are in a steep-walled canyon. For the first part of the trip it is light but you can't see the sun (we could see the moon) because you are in the canyon, and there was no wind. Late in the morning the sun rises above the rim of the canyon, but you are in and out of the sun as the river meanders. My wife never wears a hat but she bought one for this trip, she didn't really need it. We were both happy to have sunglasses. The temperature hit 98 degrees in Page later in the day, but we were comfortable with a light jacket at first that we removed later in the morning, a cotton shirt, and lightweights pants. Some people wore shorts. Part way through the boat docks at shore. The captain pulls up to shores and provides metal steps for getting off the boat. There are pit toilets available on shore. A short easy level walk on a dusty trail along the cliffs leads to some petroglyphs explained by the captain. This part of the trip isn't wheelchair accessible, but should be fine for nearly everyone else. You do not get your feet wet so we didn't need water shoes, gym shoes or walking shoes are fine. At this point the captain handed out lemonade and many people had snacks they brought, eg a banana, granola bar, pretzels. The boat provided a garbage bag. Near the end of the trip the canyon walls drop away and there is more sun, but it was still not hot. At the end the boat docks and you walk a very short distance to board the bus. There are also bathrooms available here. The return to the store on the bus is about an hour through beautiful scenery between Lees Ferry and Page. I had left my wallet in the car so didn't have money to tip the captain (who doesn't ride the bus) but the store let me leave a tip for him when I got back. Take this trip if you want to learn the history and/or personality of the region, if you want to take pretty pictures, if you like seeing wildlife (we saw herons, eagles, cormorants, ducks, ospreys, fish, lizards, wild horses, and bighorn sheep). We were worried about what to wear: it is not extreme, layer appropriately and footwear doesn't matter. You don't need water or snacks but they were nice to have. It would be entirely appropriate for grade school kids and grandma. read more

We were a group of 5 that went on the Glenn Canyon half day boat tour on the Memorial Day weekend. The tour starts at 1 pm. However this is the time when the busses leave the office where you check in for the tour. Before hopping on to the bus there is a small orientation session that you go through. This orientation, the initial checkin and a security check of all bags takes already 30min. I would advise getting here at least 45 min in advance. Also, for the entire trip get lots of water. You are going to spend about 5 hours in direct sunlight in around 100 f temperature. Get at least 1 gallon of water per person for the trip. There is water and lemonade on the trip. However, you need a container/bottle to take the water and the lemonade is just around one can per person. Along with water, get a hat (preferably with a string to tie it around your head so that it doesn't get blown away in the strong winds). Unless you are planning on a swim, you won't get too wet. So some light clothes and water proof footwear would suffice. Also don't forget to get sunscreen. Finally, you need a National Park entry pass (or need to pay $12 person). We had one pass, so we had to only buy an entry for our fifth member. After the checkin and the security checks, we were off on the bus to the point were we get on the boats. It was a nice ride and the day was bright and sunny. There was only one place where we get off the boat during the tour. You get to wet your feet and also see a few petroglyph. Most of the tour is on the boat. If there is one change, I would suggest more stops for folks to get off. Overall it was a nice experience. read more

Pretty happy with our entire experience. While we got off to a rocky start in our attempt to plan our trip in advance (tried along all day with a busy signal alllllllll day) we decided to go any way. Once we committed to the trip we ended up finally getting a call back before we drove out from Phoenix. From there it was smooth sailing. They were are to give us some advice for water and food, and took a reservation for a back haul. The next morning, office staff was friendly and helpful when we came in to sign our waivers. The office is clean, accessible, and had a nice selection of gifts and souvenirs. On the water, everything was fine. Jake was our awesome boat driver. He was friendly, funny, knowledgeable, and courteous to anyone on the water. He stopped to check on us when he went down the water again. That's going above and beyond! My biggest complaint of the experience would be the way tier boat drivers have a slight disregard for paddlers on the water. Most boats were kind enough to slow down. Some it seemed, sped up. Gentle float down Glen Canyon with views of birds and sheer canyon walls. Pictures don't do it justice, but still nice to remember things by. We'd recommend sunscreen and water as well as a light rain jacket and water or thick-soled shoes if you end up sitting in the front and it's a morning trip. On the mild morning we went, it was still cold in the shade and even colder when the boat runs faster and a mist is kicked up and water rushes in about an inch onto the deck. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. Drive through 2-mile tunnel down to the dam was an unexpected plus as well as a drive through Vermillon Cliffs/Marble Canyon on the way back. read more

Our RV trip started out rough as we made it to Wahweap RV park for our first night of a month long trip in our motorhome towing our Jeep just to realize we had left our Jeep key at home. So we tried Lyft / Uber to find out that's not a thing in Page. We called Wilderness and got Emily. She said, no problem I'll come grab you. They went out of their way to salvage our bummer morning. Just returned from the 4 night/5 Day raft expedition. To qualify this review let me say we have used professional guide services all over the world (Peru, New Zealand, Indonesia, Philippines, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania to name a few). The scenery is mind blowing, I will never view the GC the same again when standing on the rim. The sheer majesty is a down right spiritual experience, and to attempt to describe it is best left to the poets. The hike down Bright Angel to the boat beach was moderate, and an amazing way to slowly insert ourselves into the beauty of the canyon. Our group was 28, a tight knit, well travelled band of adventurers. Our guides (Richard, Jeff, Kale and Baron) were impressive in their combined skills. Boatsmen, storytellers, singer/songwriters, hiking guides and chefs....they wore many hats and provided a safe, enjoyable, entertaining journey. We had some challenging weather conditions but the lads kept our spirits up. If the rating system allowed, they would certainly each receive 5 stars. My 3 Star rating is based solely on value. Our group paid right around $64,000 for this 5 day expedition. We were also encouraged to provide an additional gratuity of 10% or $6400. In fairness, I should mention that this amount also included a quick 6 minute helicopter ride at the end to avoid the hike up to the rim, as well as a short 30 minute puddle jumper back to the south rim where our cars were parked. However for these prices, I would have expected an advance boat, that would have stayed a step ahead of the group. Setting up lunch in advance, preparing camp ahead of our arrival. I did not expect that we would be responsible for loading and unloading the boats each day, including the kitchen, tents, chairs, cots, etc. Nor did I expect that we would be responsible for setting up and taking down all of of our tents, cots, chairs, etc., each night and morning, or doing our own dishes at meal times. The fact that our gratuity alone provided the lads over $300 per day each, tells me there may be some extra dollars in the budget for added service help. Would I recommend this expedition to my friends? Without a doubt....after walking them through the daily routine. Do not sign up for this. Yes you go on the river. But the management and security is so inept that you spend most of the day sitting on a bus with 50 people waiting to go. There is a ton of security and after sitting on their bus for an hour waiting to go we learned our bus driver forgot her license. Then we had to wait another half hour for someone to go get it for her. There is another hour bus ride after the river trip. If anyone had told us about all the sitting and waiting we would never have done this. Also there is no mask mandate so if you care about others being considerate and wearing a mask on a crowded bus for hours then this trip is not for you. read more

EPIC trip... every aspect was FABULOUS! Can't wait to do it again. There were all sorts of reasons this trip could go wrong for me... I was traveling solo, other friends had differing experiences with OTHER companies, I hadn't been camping since college, etc. etc. But not once in my week on the CO River did I have anything go wrong with my trip. Not one. In fact, it could not have been MORE RIGHT. Everything was absolutely spectacular, the boats, the camping equipment, the scenery, the side hikes (I LOVED these!), the FOOD WAS BETTER THAN VEGAS, the stars/night sky, the rapids... you get the idea. It was PHENOMENAL. All of it! But honestly, I believe the most valuable part of my adventure was our guides. I put a LOT of stock in the quality of care & customer service a company puts forth... and our 4 guides had such dynamic qualities to contribute, I was awe-struck. ***BRETT, WILL, ARIEL, and BRENT*** all made my trip what it was, outstanding. Their knowledge of the river, the geology, the folklore, the boats, the camp life, and how to keep our group happy was so very impressive. Wilderness River Adventures needs to hang onto these incredible guides, they are the most valuable contribution to my trip. Our group ranged from 17 year old teen boy to 90 (NINETY!) year old feisty woman. We had married, single, family, solo, couples, & friends. We had Americans, Canadians, Swedish & Italians on this trip. Our guides were the glue that held us all together & made sure we all had a fantastic time. Top 10 List of things you need: 1. GOOD 50+ sunscreen & lots of it (the spray stuff was easiest, but came off quickest) 2. quality rain gear (none of it will keep you dry, but it will keep you warm!) 3. a headlamp for after dark in camp 4. a FEW extra batteries for your cameras (no way to charge stuff, *sigh) 5. good shoes for hikes (my Tevas were awesome, Keens gave some blisters & sneakers got wet) 6. TWO quick dry towels (one small for the boat & one large for drying off) 7. be ready to eat dinner early & go to be by 9 p.m. or bring a good BOOK 8. light colored BUT NOT WHITE clothes & a big floppy hat 9. Absolutely amazing experience! I am so grateful that I was able to go on this smooth water rafting tour through the Grand Canyon! We booked ours through Papillon tours which brought us by bus from Grand Canyon South rim. GG was our bus tour guide who was so great giving us heads up information and telling us about educational information about landmarks we passed. The rafting tour was so beautiful and the best part was swimming in the Colorado river. Most others thought the water was too cold but with the sun beaming down on us I thought it was perfect. Two years ago we did the Upper Grand Canyon oar trip for five days and just finished the Lower Canyon 7 day oar trip. Even during a time of Covid and excessive heat in the Canyon, we were cared for and felt safe. The other drawback was the incredibly long bus ride back. At one point, we were likely driving 2 mph up the mountain. Our bus riders actually clapped when we reached the top. read more

I just got back from a fantastic experience on the 7-day Lower Grand Canyon oar-powered trip with Wilderness River Adventures. Everything about the trip was top-notch. We had terrific, fun, and knowledgeable guides, led by our wonderful trip leader Siobhan. The food was great, the logistics were all taken care of, the sky was magical, and the whitewater was epic. But my favorite part of the trip was the attitude that the guides and guests all brought. The entire group revered the surroundings, and everyone--including the guides--was incredibly appreciative of how lucky we all were to be on this special expedition together. For the entire week, there was not one complaint: that something was too heavy, too cold, too hot, too sandy, or anything else. Instead, there was constant laughter, conversation, excitement, and smiles. It was a great trip with a top-notch outfitter. Our family booked a rafting trip months in advance for the end of the week on our Grand Canyon vacation. We were all looking forward to rafting the Colorado River and Horseshoe Bend after having a great experience on a day raft trip in the Grand Tetons pre-Covid. The raft shown in the Internet photos had half as many people on it as we're on our tour. I have no idea what the maximum capacity of these rafts are, but our boat was very uncomfortably packed with 26 riders and one surly and unknowledgeable captain who grew up in the area and knew the canyon from a locals perspective but had no information about the history of the canyon beyond the time she lived there. Therefore, we got to learn about Car Crash Canyon and Pac Man's ghost in the rock, but nothing about the Native Americans who treasured this place and their culture and history here. When asked questions by the group, her answers were either condescending or clearly uninformed. By the middle of the overpacked and uncomfortable trip, we couldn't wait for it to be over. Two guides and two rafts leave at the same time and the other guide and their guests were clearly having more fun, getting up close to the canyon walls, and likely having a more informed time. Our guide's response when a guest pointed out the good time they were having was to say that kids trips are always more fun than adult trips. There were kids on that raft, true, but there were an equal number of adults. Why kids can only have fun and an adult trip has to be a boring drag is beyond me. In the end, this was a wasted day of driving 5 hours (2.5 each way) from the Grand Canyon to Page to take the trip. I'd never do it again and can't recommend Wilderness Adventures. We booked our trip based on all the great reviews they have. Maybe our poor experience was an exception. Hopefully so, but if not be prepared that your experience may vary and avoid the guide who says she grew up in the area and this is her first year. read more

We went on this tour with a guide named George and he was hilarious and so well informed. There was a little bday girl on the tour amd he was super sweet with her. The tour is so incredible, really awe-inspiring. This is definitely the best way to see horseshoe bend! Definitely recommend. Be sure to go in the morning if it's summer! read more

We did the half day float trip through Horseshoe Bend. It would be nice if the confirmation email had information about what is included (water,lemonade) and what you need to bring. Also that you need to wear a mask on the bus even though they cram you in a room for safety orientation and don't require masks and our bus driver wasn't wearing one! I don't mind wearing one as long as I know I need to bring one. It was neat to see the dam from the river but we felt 2 hours would be a better length of time for the trip. read more

This was even better than we expected it to be. We took the half day river trip from the Glen Canyon Dam to Lees Ferry. The whole trip features breath taking scenery, with a stop on a beach to see ancient petroglyphs (drawings in the rock wall) and then floating through Horseshoe Bend. I also really liked the tunnel bus ride down to the Glen Canyon Dam. The guide was super knowledgeable about the wildlife, the canyon itself, and the history of the area. I think there were about 18 of us on the boat / raft, which might sound like a lot, but I don't recall ever feeling cramped. Wear a jacket or a sweatshirt as the canyon's height keeps you in the shade at times and you can get a little bit of spray from the water, but you'll also spend some time in the sun too. The only "negatives" are the early start as they want you at the facility by 6:00 AM (I think you'd be fine arriving at 6:15 or even 6:30 but I wouldn't push it), and then the bus ride back from Lees Ferry to Page seemed to take forever, but we were on time and back in our car by noon. I think the price was around $250 total by the time we added up the park entrance fees, the tour, and the tax. While it seemed a bit steep before we took the trip, I would recommend this to anybody. It was really a great way to spend the morning and it offers a viewpoint of Glen Canyon you cannot get any other way. read more

My husband and I were at Lee's Ferry and saw two boats stop, thought we'd check into a tour. I called Wilderness, spoke with Bri and were able to make it in time for a half day float on the river. Bri was super sweet & remembered our phone call from earlier that morning. Depending on the time of year you take trip, I highly suggest sunscreen, water and if you are brave enough to jump in the river at the petroglyph stop, wear a swimsuit! It was 100+ on the boat but 46 in the water. Refreshing! Captain Lance provided a lot of information on Glen Canyon and other spots on the trip. It was fun being in the bottom of the canyon and seeing everyone at the top at Horseshoe Bend. Absolutely beautiful trip and we were fortunate to have a great group on board. We saw several mountain sheep, thank goodness for those white backsides, they blend in well against canyon walls and are hard to see. Made one stop at the petroglyphs. All in all a great trip & would do it again! read more
