Westgate has been taking care of my dogs for more than a decade. They have a great team of vets, vest assistants, and front office staff who know my dog family and treat them like family. Owning any pets is expensive but the cost of procedures is disclosed beforehand and options offered. Call backs are placed when follow up is needed and just to check on pups cuz they care. Max is aging and now about 9 years old. Their care is very important to his on-going life. Would never take a pet anyplace else. Give them a try. I really think you will find all your pets needs met. I like our vets here, but they are more expensive than other vets in town. They have an uncanny ability of adding on tests and procedures to make extra $$. For example, we had a $390 estimate for the service our cat need in order to refill his prescription food. We were told when we made the appointment that he just needed a blood test for them to continue selling us the special food he needed. When we arrived to the appointment, it was a whole new story ; he needed a physical all of the vaccines and the cost we be $390. Reluctantly, we agreed. So the tech took the kitty to the back room to do the treatments. when we went to pay, the bill was $651.00 . The vet did some eye tests. She should have told us it was a very expensive procedure, but she didn't. So we were totally blindsided. They operate a sort of "bait and switch operation" so they can get more money. Oh, and the charge with tax to clip nails is $33. on another occasion, my friend's cat was dying and wasn't eating. She drove all around town looking for a certain food for the kitty with no luck. I suggested she check Westgate. Westgate had the food, but wouldn't even sell her one can because the cat wasn't a patient at Westgate. Frankly, Westgate appears to care more about $$ and rules than helping people. I mean, how on earth would Westgate be damaged by selling one bloody can of cat food to a woman whose cat is dying and she simply wanted to try a can of nutritious food? Just because my friend's cat wasn't a patient at Westgate. My friend was sobbing because of all the stress, but Westgate refused to help her! How cruel. read more

transparent and sensitive about cost. Doctors are absolutely brilliant, compassion , kind, fair balanced, loving to our pets and detail oriented. They follow up and follow through meticulously. They remember the smallest details that make the biggest difference. The staff is professional, invested and caring. I had to put my 15 year old Cavalier down this week and staff, with my permission of course, stopped in to check on me and offer a hug and, with tears in eyes, to say goodbye to my dog, their beloved patient. Westgate is for pets as the Mayo Clinic is for people - operates as seamlessly and at the same standards of excellence, with highest quality of care and concern. read more

I had a major problem with my dog. I was in seeing Dr. Mirodone that day and my dog was really in a bad way. She recommended taking her to the emergency Vet Clinic in Lake Elmo, so I went directly there. The big problem was the following week I went in for my appointment with her and the tech came out and told me she wasn't in today. I really had a feeling she was lying about it. I guess when things got tough, she didn't want to see my dog anymore. Needless to say we never went back. read more

I first came to Westgate with my dog in 2016, at the recommendation of a friend whose nearly 20 year cat has been a client there most of her life. I always had good experiences, even during the pandemic when all vet clinics were overwhelmed. I have recommended the clinic to friends and planned to continue care there with my younger dog. In December, when it was time to say goodbye to my elderly dog, the vet and his assistant were extremely kind and compassionate during that appointment. A few days later, I attempted to return (unopened) dog food and unused meds. I was told at the previous appointment I could get a refund for the food and the clinic would donate the meds. The person at the front desk told me that they "don't take back food when the pet dies". She did go check with someone in back, leaving me in the lobby, in tears, with a shopping bag of food and meds from my dog who had just died. She came back and accepted the return, without any acknowledgement for the misunderstanding or for my distress. I ordered clay paw prints of my dog (instead of keeping his ashes). When they did not arrive after a few weeks, I called the clinic and was informed that the had been sent to the wrong address. Tracking indicated the package was delivered. I filed a claim with USPS and talked to the mail carriers at my current address, but this irreplaceable memento of my dog was never located. One of the front desk employees was extremely kind and tried to resolve this for me, but there was no other acknowledgement from the clinic for the loss of my pet or their error in mailing it to the wrong place. read more

Was visiting Westgate for my dogs annual shots - and they asked if we wanted to purchase more preventative heartworm meds - we stated we normally took Heartguard plus. They suggested we try Interceptor plus - that they sell there. We made the purchase and our dog also received a vaccine - so when we got home and gave him his first interceptor chewable and he started acting completely different the next day, we never even thought it could be the interceptor plus we assumed it was vaccine - considering our dog never responded so negatively to heartguard plus. Then we gave our dog the second dose of interceptor plus this month and OMG - again, very lethargic... he loves playing ball we cant even mention the word and he loses it - we say ball and he walks away goes into another room and lays down away form all of us - NOT LIKE HIM EVER - then we realized this is how he acted when we gave him the interceptor plus last month. I then looked online and found there is a class action suit (Feb 2022) against interceptor plus cuz thousands of dogs have gotten sick and died from taking this. When I asked Westgate why would they recommend and push an anti heartworm meds that have been known to make dogs sick or worse. All the answers given were more like excuses. I repeated my question like any loving parent would "This medicine is known for making dogs sick and die. Why would U still continue to recommend and push it?" Apparently, I made too much of a huff about being concerned of my dog who doesnt even seem familiar to us right now. How would any other parent of their loving pet react. In the end, Westgate stated it doesnt look like we are a good fit together and dropped us after 10 years. Whether U stay with Westgate or not - dont let them push products that can harm your dog. If they cared they would have known about the class action suit - cuz that is their business to know. Or, did they know but choose to ignore it cuz they get some sort of benefit from the interceptor plus company to push their interceptor plus product. Looking at some of their reviews listed here it seems the issue about them not being transparent has been an ongoing issue. read more

We trusted Westgate with the care of our dogs and cats for over 15 years. Their level of professionalism and veterinary knowledge is amazing and higher than any of the other vet clinics we have visited in the past. Their costs are a bit higher than some other vets we have been to, but the high level of expertise, care, and support we get is well worth the reasonable price. read more

Went in for vaccines/booster... charged nearly $200 for an exam and Lab test that was not explicitly requested when scheduling. Reminder to review services/charges while in the lobby. In my experience, Dr. Hageman and staff were condescending and belittling. I was made to feel small and shamed; I was constantly interrupted and unheard. My German Shepherd puppy was very shy with strangers when I first brought her home. At my first appointment with Dr. Hageman, Dr. Hageman was immediately alarmist, and asked rhetorical questions to suggest I was somehow not taking care of my puppy properly, or had gone to a breeder that had inappropriately cared for my puppy. Both Dr. Hageman and her associate made side-comments to *each other* about how my puppy's behavior was "not normal", as though I was not in the room. I was made to feel that something was seriously abnormal about my puppy's behavior, and that it must be tied to the fact that I was a poor pet parent. At the second visit, I almost started crying in the vet's office. I felt so sad and unsure of why I was being shamed by my vet. Rather than try and adapt their approach to my animal, Dr. Hageman and her associate made Akhira extremely nervous and scared, and were unable to administer her vaccine. Dr. Hageman told me she would not be able to treat Akhira in the future, and suggested I contact a home vet instead. Fast forward to today. After my TERRIBLE experience with Westgate, I found Dr. Dessai at VET PARTNERS EDINA. I can not say enough good things about Dr. Dessai!!! The week after my stressful visit at Westgate, I went to Dr. Dessai's office. Dr. Dessai was extremely friendly and calm with Akhira, and extremely respectful and helpful with all of my questions. Her calm demeanor made it easy for Akhira to get all her shots. My experience could not have been more different. Akhira LOVES going to the Vet Partners, and waits at the door for Dr. Dessai to come into the room (see picture!) I think Vet Partners may be slightly more expensive, but I'm so happy to have a WOC who is patient, makes me feel valued, makes the visit easy and fun, and a support staff that treats me with the utmost respect! I will definitely never be returning to Westgate, and do not recommend it for POC. read more

Westgate is the very best! We prefer to see Dr Mirodone but if she is not a available all the vets are excellent. We love Dr. Mirodone because she is very thorough, kind, and she truly cares about our dog and every dog. We have seen her for our dogs since 2004. Love love love Westgate! I would trust any of the vets there 100% but specifically love Dr. Cohen. He always takes whatever time is needed to explain everything and answer any and all of my questions, no matter how dumb they are. After a bladder infection left my dog in the emergency vet on a Sunday last summer with no answers (and a hefty bill), Westgate was able to diagnose it right away and get treatment started. Definitely not the cheapest, but definitely the best and I would never take my dogs anywhere else! read more

Last year my Cavalier got cancer and Dr Hageman walked me through the diagnosis and options in a very gentle and loving way. The cat I had growing up was a regular at this vet, and the cat that came after was no different. My mother has trusted this veterinarian with both of our childhood cats, so I trust mine with them too! I've had two last minute, "Help!" visits to Westgate, and they've been extremely accommodating! You certainly pay for the quality of care that you receive, which is to say the care is top notch and the price is higher than some other veterinarians in the area. With this in mind, I believe it is worth it! The first "Oh NO!" visit was a few years ago when my cat had the symptoms of a UTI. Although initial tests came back ok, they still made some lifestyle and diet recommendations and gave me a prescription to a particular cat food that would help with his urination problem. The second visit was a week ago for the same reason. Immediately when Dr. Reed came in, she remembered all the notes and particulars about my cat from the last visit! She remembered that he was friendly to love, but not to being restrained, and recommended a sedative just for while he was there. She also remembered my work schedule, and agreed to hold onto him until they could collect a urine sample, and then allowed me to pick him up after work. I appreciated it so much! I always know my kitty will be in good hands there, and if something is too expensive I am vocal about it and they are very responsive to my financial constraints. The parking lot can get very busy (it's a small lot), and I have had to park on the street in order to get inside before, so keep this in mind for peak hours. (Especially if you have to carry a cat carrier in doors!) read more

At our pet's last visit - I informed clinic we use Heartguard plus for worm preventive, they insisted the inceptor plus was superior product to use, we agreed to us either, and my dog had a serious reaction to the medicine, when I googled I discover in Feb 2022 1000's filed a class action lawsuit cuz dogs were getting seriously sick and dying from inceptor plus - I inquired why would they push a product that has caused so much injuries and deaths to dogs - they told me heart guard plus must have complaints as well. Our pet is not the same since, he is anti social now - was not at all before. He will not jump up onto his favorite chair, or in the car which he LOVES to do. Obviously like any pet owner we asked the clinic straight out, why are U pushing products to my dog that could harm them without informing us of any possibility - we then asked if they were being incentivized to push inceptor plus over the brands. Their reply was clearly U dont trust us, U should find a new clinic. Wait find a new clinic, to do what bring my sick dog with these issues he gained form medication U insisted we try... They asked if they could do another examination on our dog and stated he wasn't jumping cuz of sore back. I asked if they were going to do X-rays, no. And were reminded we still need to look for new clinic moving forward. Our dog doesn't have any signs of back problems, the clinic was clearly making claims about our dog to prevent a possible law suit or action taken against them. The doctor was pushing my dogs back and she said see its sore. BTW: my dog dint even make a noise when she pushed down on his back. However, my dog is the biggest drama queen around - worse then a soccer player getting tripped. If his back was sore and she even touched dit he would have been whimpering and yelping - not just looking back at her like why are U pushing down so hard on my back. I took a pic of the examining room - where they had promotional posters on the doors pushing inceptor plus and the deal they are offering Westgate customers. Inceptor plus has had more issues with dogs then any other de wormer on the market. Why is westgate standing behind and pushing this product. Even if one pet does at their clinic isn't that enough for them to stop pushing a product or is profits what guides their hearts. Maybe we should ask the owners of WestGate and finical group that buys clinics cuz pet clinics are big profit centers... U decide. I have been with Westgate for 20 years and I have never seen them behave in this manor, they clearly have been influenced by these financial group and their focus on profits. Based on the reviews form their previous employees - everything has changed since the new financial group have taken over in Jan 2022. PROFITS PROFITS PROFITS comes first. Which means our pet care comes last. Charlotte has spent some time here. Her allergies and penchant for potentially toxic substances have caused us to spend more time (and $$$) here than we had budgeted for when we got a dog. But, while it's pricey (but aren't all vets in times of emergencies??), they are so good to her and so patient with me, that I can't be bothered to look around for anywhere else. They are always prompt about getting back to me regarding a stool sample or concern. Over the telephone, they talked me through my panic when she got into dark chocolate truffles and figured out that based on her weight I didn't need to have her in for an induced vomit. They photocopied recipes for me when we were determining what food allergies she had. The vet always stays on contact with you until everything is OK. I might pay a lot, but the value for money works out. And she doesn't even freak when we go there. Healthy dog? Priceless. read more

I have been taking my guinea pigs to Dr. Perry at Westgate since I moved to Minneapolis. It can be difficult to find a good exotics vet - one who actually is experienced in treating guinea pigs, rabbits, etc and there are several such vets who practice at Westgate. Hooray! The location is super convenient for me, and they have decent hours - open late enough in the evening where I can make an after-work appointment, or early enough to sneak in before I have to get to the office. The front desk staff and the technicians/assistants are so helpful and friendly...and I have definitely been in the lobby having a complete freakout over my animals' issues and they've handled it with grace and tact. Dr. Perry also actually seems to care, which seems like an obvious thing but you'd be surprised at some attitudes I've encountered when trying to get treatment for a pet that is not a dog or a cat. Even just little things, like receiving a sympathy card from him after the passing of my oldest pig, really touched me and was appreciated. My pigs have been seen for routine care and emergency care for a variety of issues, and they have gotten top notch treatment here. When care options become more complicated, they have had to refer me to the U of Minnesota Animal Hospital (I'm talking about surgery, major diagnostics, etc) but they are timely and give me all the info I need to make an informed decision. I also appreciate them being able to reach out to another doctor in the case of an emergency and my primary not being available - again, the fact that they have more than one experienced exotics vet on staff is so important for exactly this reason. As far as pricing goes, they may not be the cheapest, but the care my animals have received here was worth every penny. read more

I no longer live in Minneapolis, but when I did, this was my vet's office. I am a very over-protective pet parent and only want the best for my dog and cat. That is exactly what I got at Westgate. As the previous reviewer stated, this is not the most inexpensive vet you can find. But you get what you pay for. So break out the plastic! I usually saw Dr Reed, but also had times that I saw Dr Hershey and Dr Downie. All of them were equally patient, loving and knowledgeable with my pets. They cared about every aspect of my pets' health. My cat was spayed at this clinic, and my dog had his teeth cleaned (under anesthesia). And I felt they were in great hands during these procedures. I also had an emergency visit when my dog had gotten into some dark chocolate. They waited around after close that day, knowing I was on my way. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good vet's office. read more

We adopted a nine year old golden last year knowing we were committing to loving her through the aging process and dealing with any health issues as they arise. So, finding a great vet was on the top of our to do list. We asked around our dog-friendly neighborhood and Dr. Meridone and Westgate came highly recommended and they have exceeded our expectations. First we attempted to speak with front desk in person as I'd just rescued our kitten and we live only a block away. Another customer had already paid and was making small talk, the clerk didn't bother to even greet us. Spent a few minutes browsing and still got no attention so we left. Today I called to try and book an appointment, she kept asking me repetitive questions as if she couldn't hear me. When giving her the address she asked Minneapolis or Edina? I had already told her we lived a few houses away; I told her the address is Minneapolis, but it's in Edina. She acted confused and said she'd need the zip code. At this point, frustrated, I hung up. I have had great experience at Westgate and feel that they help make me a better pet owner to my highly bred designer mutt with a tender GI tract. I'm the kind of guy/owner that other vets can see coming a mile away and start warming up the credit card machine. I feel like I get really honest advice, great care and decency at Westgate. I typically use Dr. Donald and my dog loves her. She is gentle, soothing, knowledgeable and above all has a very deep love of animals - I learned that becoming a vet was a second career for Dr. Donald and it is truly her calling. We moved to MN from Washington, DC in 2007 and began bringing our first kiddo, our chocolate lab to Westgate when he was two. He LOVED every visit, from the desk staff to the vet techs to his docs. He knew when we turned onto France Ave, where we were going and began to whine in excitement. As he aged, instead of meds, we tried acupuncture with Dr. Hershey which kept his arthritis in check for the final years of his life. Things turned quickly in the end as we found out about his cancer and five days later he couldn't stand. The morning of his final day, we knew, he knew. Westgate accommodated us for several hours for our good-bye and closed off the back garden so we could be alone with him. I'll never ever be more grateful for his care and their compassion that day and throughout his 12.5 years. Now we have a new puppy and the life cycle begins again with our new canine love. He has only had a few visits but already wags in anticipation when we pull into the parking lot. read more

Made an appointment for a " complimentary" appointment right after I adopted my puppy from an agency. I received an email beforehand that had the date, time, etc & also some basic instructions that read," Please bring any previous records and a stool sample less than 12 hours old." I brought in the sample & had an overall good appointment. We got some information & left. After we were driving home I received a call saying I left without paying. I quickly called back obviously confused as it was a complimentary appointment and we had not had anything done. We just wanted to have a basic check up since we had only had our little guy for 2 days & he wasn't old enough for more shots. After I called back the receptionist informed me I did not pay for the almost $50 fee to have the stool sample tested? The sample I was instructed to bring in with no prior notice or any indication that there was any fee. When I told the receptionist there was no communication about this & I wouldn't have my dogs feces tested and then make a break for it she said that she was sorry and then asked how I would like to pay it. Very empathetic. $50 is not that big of a deal. But instructing a patient to bring something in to a "complimentary" appointment and then blindsiding them with a fee is ridiculous. Had I known of the fee beforehand I would have decided if it was something that was necessary. I probably wouldn't of justified $50 for his poop, no matter how much I love him. I am bummed out about this experience because I had really thought that we had found our primary veterinarian. After this I will not be returning or recommending to anyone. Bummer. read more

My geriatric cats receive their medical care from Dr. Catherine Hageman at Westgate Pet Clinic. Dr. Hageman is an exceptionally knowledgeable, competent, and caring veterinarian. My cats are old and their care is complicated. They have received excellent care from Dr. Hageman and they are doing quite well now because of that excellent care. In addition, Westgae Pet Clinic has always accommodated me when I have needed to get my cats in to be seen quickly for acute problems. I feel fortunate to have Dr. Hageman as my veterinarian and Westgate Clinic as my pet clinic. read more

they seem to do a really good job dealing with the people who clearly express themselves through their animal companions and those that just have pets that they want reasonable care for. we fall into the latter category but there's no shortage of the former in the waiting area. they seem to handle both with aplomb. the vets answer our questions with all of the detail we need to make informed decisions. to to pit off they carry a wide selection of food for cats and dogs. the front desk staff are always helpful and friendly and the location can't be beat. Dr. Donald is a saint. We were not patients of the clinic but when our senior golden became suddenly ill the clinic was able to get us in right away (I called frantic on a Friday night and we got in on Saturday morning). Dr. Donald told us before each service how much it would cost in a respectful and informative manner. We had to put our golden down two weeks after our first visit and I was blown away but how amazing Dr. Donald and the staff were during the whole process. We will be taking all our other animals to the clinic from now on. I would highly recommend this clinic. Their prices are very fair comparable and the service is outstanding. read more

We knew it was getting close to the end with our 12 year old small dog. We had gone to another vet throughout his life, but because our dog went downhill fast I called Westgate since they opened at 7 AM. And our vet didn't open until 8. I knew we didn't have much time. Julie, the individual I spoke with on the phone with was extremely professional, empathetic, and caring while I cried through my words. She said for us to bring him right away and didn't question why we wouldn't go to our own vet. My husband took him in and was immediately greeted and rushed to meet with the vet. They were so wonderful to him and made the process a little less painful. We received a card in the mail with an extremely thoughtful note. I wish we would have used them as our vet over the years, they seem wonderful. read more

I previously wrote a review here, which I see Yelp moved to the "not recommended" section. Apparently, because Westgate didn't like it. So, being brief: This is a pet clinic that will fire you as a patient owner for questioning your bill. Seriously. I had been a patient owner taking my Golden Retriever here for 11 years. Faithful. After a surgery, I found out some things regarding the billing and I questioned them on these things. I could never get straight answers. They used a board certified surgeon when it wasn't necessary. This made the bill go from $800 to $1900. In good faith, I paid the $800 and was willing to pay the remainder if I could get straight answers. When I pressed for answers, I received a letter in the mail "terminating our relationship". They didn't bother pursuing the remainder of the bill because they knew it wasn't valid. I find this revolting. So did others with whom I shared the story. They also happen to take their pets to Westgate. Dr. Hershey didn't even reach out to me, inviting a phone conversation, as she has done for others who have written reviews. That speaks volumes about the clinic. It has gone down hill since Dr. Porter left. read more

I've been a client of Westgate for a long time time and I would have to say for the majority of that time I've been happy with the service I've received from them. They are generally nice people and pretty easy going when you arrive and check in. Where things have started to go south is when you need to book a "serious" appointment or deal with an actual doctor. My last few appointments have been somewhat unpleasant and my last attempt to book an appointment was the last straw. I have an elderly dog who's experiencing some issue and when I called they asked me to describe the issues and acted interested but then provided no solutions or times that I could bring him in. Their only response was sorry we don't have any open times tomorrow....... After that comment I asked when I could bring him in as he's obviously not well and their response was "we're typically booked out two weeks in advance and if you pet is not well you should take him to an urgent care". Is this not my vet that I've been bringing my dog to for the past 8 years? I guess they're ok for check ups and issues that are not that big of a deal, but if your dog needs a real doctor then don't take them there as that's too much to ask. The whole 25 minute conversation was beyond frustrating and ended with nothing more than sorry but "we just don't have any open times for the next two weeks". I get it, it's a business and you need to make sure you time is well spent, but at least make me think you care about my pet. I honestly don't think you do or at least that how you've made me feel over the past SEVERAL times I've tried to have you help my dog. Check reviews by Alex F. and Veronica S. as well as I feel they pretty much summed up what you should expect if you deal with Westgate. Obviously I don't have a another place to recommended as this has been my vet since we moved to Edina but my recent interactions with them made me realize they don't care my dog and that's just truly disappointing. read more

The Docs do not rush you through, vet techs are very nice@handle pets well! they bend over backwards to make sure you feel good and your pet is safe, naturally, nothing fake here. They have even helped out genorously with my ill pet rat on a sat. when they were busy, and they were so kind and did not rush me saying good-bye, they handled her with care @ respect. I refer every one seeking a wonderful vet clinic to go to westgate with confidence !!! They are wonderful. read more
